FROM THE CHAIR INSIDE SABIE MINI GS CHALLENGE 2 NEW STAR IN THE EAST 3 CLUB RIDE REPORTS 4 MOAM OEFENDAG 5 EAR PLUGS 5 It seems like only yesterday that I stood down from the Chair. In terms of the constitution of the BMW Motorcycle Club Pretoria, a chairman must stand down after two years in office. A past chairman may continue on the committee if elected by the members and is eligible for re-election to the Chair at a later date if elected by the members. At present, Pieter de Koker continues as an ordinary Committee member, having served as Chairman for two years. At one time, the Club Committee had four past chairmen still serving the members interests! I have always said that I will serve the members in whatever role they choose for me. So it was that at the Committee meeting on 26th March, the Committee elected me to serve as Club Chairman. I am honoured and humbled by this action and I pledge to serve the members to the best of my ability. I must thank my predecessor, Pieter de Koker, for his dedication to the Club and his guidance of Club affairs during the past two years. We have a Club with a strong membership base, a sound financial position and a number of dedicated active members on the CommitONTMOET 7 PIETER DE tee and Rides Subcommittee, who keep the members able to choose from participating in KOKER many interesting and varied rides over the length and breadth of this beautiful country of MEMBERS’ 8 ours. IMAGES In a broader view, our affiliation to BMW Clubs Africa offers fresh opportunities. Not the UPCOMING 8 least of these is the first BMW Clubfest – planned to take place in early August. This is an EVENTS event intended to forge closer bonds between the various motorcycle and car clubs in the country and hopefully will be the first of many such events. I urge members to support this event, which will be held at Phakisa Raceway and will offer members a chance to practice on this first-rate international class motorcycle track. Details will be finalised shortly and will be publicised on the website and in Spoke and Piston. BOLTS & NUTS 6 Be Aware – Ride with Care. Richard. Richard is `n kranige motorfietsryer. Congratulations to Etienne Pieterse, Corlia Cilliers and Johan Maree! They were elected as new Club Committee members during the AGM in March. Etienne is the new Treasurer, Corlia will manage Club Regalia and Johan is the Roadie Captain and will also look after Clubhouse matters. Four committee members were reelected: Zonica Vermeulen (Secretary) and Dani du Preez (Communications) will hold the same portfolios. Besides being the new chairman, Richard Hussey and Pieter de Koker (GS Captain) are the BMW Clubs Africa representatives. Read more about Pieter de Koker, one of our most active Club members, on page 7. VOLUME 14 NO 2 MARCH / APRIL 2009 Page 2 SABIE MINI GS CHALLENGE The Sabie Mini GS Challenge is aptly named – it is held over a weekend, with only 1 day’s riding, hosting about 110 riders. This event is not widely publicised – I was lucky to hear about it from Eddie who happened to have done it two years ago. I can understand why it is not widely publicised – riders will be beating each other around the head to attend, if more knew about it. The route possibilities are green, red and black – green being mostly farm roads, with a little bit of technical sections thrown in, red for the more experienced riders and black being very technical. GS and GS Adventure riders were strongly discouraged from doing the black route. When I first received the GPS route file, I was a little disappointed to see that the route length for the red route would only be 80km. Looking at the route file in more detail, I realised that it could be quite interesting… The venue was the Windmill Wine Shop about 27 km from Sabie towards Hazyview. A little jeep track winding down and ending at one of the most beautiful campsites I have ever seen – right next to the Sabie River, large trees lining the bank, closely mown grass, ample camping and parking space. The riders briefing allayed quite a bit of my disappointment – the route was to be technical, lots of slippery areas, steep inclines and declines and fantastic views. We were the same group of riders who did the Challenge in September (apart from Tom who had other obligations) and therefore took on the nature of a reunion – we reminisced, we laughed and good fun was had by all. Early the next morning the skills challenge had its first elimination round, around a short track laid out close to the camping site. Some terribly tight turns, slippery surfaces and obstacles. I was suffering from a bit of overreminiscence from the previous night and decided to be a spectator. Eddie, looking splendid in the Club motocross shirt, did however participate and eventually ended up finishing 6th overall. As a matter of interest, the GERT STEYN last phase of the skills challenge was completed by each rider on the same bike – an early 80’s Yamaha 175cc AG bike (the AG stands for agricultural). Poor brakes, a bad clutch – it truly was a skill to ride this little thing over the same obstacles that the behemoths ride over. The route itself was amazing – even though we got lost… The problem with utilising the track setting on the GPS is this – if there are not enough track points, it is easy to get lost particularly when there are a lot of intersecting and winding roads. We ended up doing around a 100km, but the route was amazing. There were a lot of extremely tight turns, very, very slippery, long traverses of slushy mud and water and rocky sections. .. Apart from one or two walking-speed falls, we were pretty lucky considering the difficulty of the surface. No damage to the bikes (even egos!). The most frustrating part of getting lost was to be able to get to within 200m of the lunch spot, but unable to get there as we were 200m above them! Apparently we were not the only ones getting lost… That would be my only suggestion for change for the next challenge – better route markers and more track points on the GPS. The scenery was amazing, however. Some rain over the Saturday night left the campsite very muddy and the route out towards the tar road treacherous. The organisers had to close the original route and find a new route up the little koppie. Would I attend next year? Yes! I would like to see a bit more of the Pretoria Club members there. For those who are new to off-road riding, it will be the perfect start. Quite a few people had their very first off-road experience at this event – Eddie did quite a bit of coaching on looking up, standing up and opening up the night before. None of them had major spills and enjoyed it tremendously. The camp site from Bruno Gila’s view and in the picture Phillipe Roux, Bruno Gila (front), Colin King and Antony Page. Other members joining Gert Steyn were Mark Schültz & Eddie Immelman. Seventeen GS’ers and 23 road bikes took the roads to see the Hartebees-poort-, Olifantsnek and Buffelspoort Dams. The breakfast venue was once again the Van Gaalen’s Cheese Farm. Thanks to Richard for organising the venue and the Road Ride. In March Johan Maree led 24 Roadies to the banks of the Vaal river near Orkney. A wellorganised trip; the group could relax and enjoy brunch on a pontoon! ▲ Johan & Marisabel Strauss on the RT Etienne Pieterse’s summary of the GS ride: We set off towards Erasmia for the first taste of dirt. I shot ahead to take some pictures at the Hennops River crossing, but sadly it was bone-dry. After the dry river crossing, we made our way through the Skeerpoort towards Breedtsnek Pass. All we found was dust, dust and to top it all off, a little more dust. I felt for poor Colin, our sweeper. He had to scratch the dust out of his eye sockets at Van Gaalen’s! After a nice rest at the top of Breedtsnek, we descended the pass again and took some lovely dirt roads back to Van Gaalen’s. The road had seen its fair share of rain, and was very rutted in places. It would have been quite a different story in the wet. After lunch and a few cold ones, most went their separate ways back home, but a few of us, decided to take the same road back through the Skeerpoort and back via Erasmia W AT E R B E R G LEON LOMBARD The March Club ride visited the popular Klein Kariba resort near Warmbaths. Adriaan was our esteemed leaded on this trip and gave us a good briefing before we departed about roads that had been washed away, sandy patches, and the like. After somewhat of a mission we eventually hit the R101 towards Warmbaths in temperatures not exceeding 22 degrees - lovely riding weather. In Warmbaths some filled up, checked fuel, pumped tyres while others just polluted their lungs. Soon we were out of town and heading into the Waterberge. This area must have had lots of rain as the landscape was covered in lush green vegetation. The roads were generally in a good condition, between a level 1 and 2, with only a few surprises. Eventually we headed towards Donkerpoort, a section which caused the downfall of several riders.* We arrived at Klein Kariba, a previously forbidden area for motorcycles and before you could say BMW Motorcycle Club, Pretoria, South Africa, the parking lot was packed with bikes and we were getting a few stares from the local campers. After all the morning’s excitement we were all very ‘skraal’, and those food tables suffered under our onslaught. Fortunately we behaved impeccably, so I reckon we can go there again in future? All the best to the riders who took a spill. Thanks Adriaan and Pieter for navigating and sweeping. This was well worth it. Pity we all scattered after breakfast; in hindsight I should have taken a dip in the pool… * Bruises, hairline fractures, a few broken ribs and fingers, but nothing too serious – They’re all recovering well – Ed. In die vroeë oggendure is daar toe op die naam MOAM - (Men on a Mission) besluit. SPECIAL EAR PLUGS SHEELAGH HANSEN Sheelagh sent this valuable information for those interested in optimum protection and communication in noise. For a long time now we have wanted to have special ear plugs made to fit our ears but have never found someone who could offer something that could really work well for us. Although we want to cut out the wind noise we still want to be able to talk to each other over the intercom and most ear plugs prevent this. At last we have found someone who can make ear plugs that can cut out certain frequencies but still allow other frequencies to get through. They also set them to suit your specific hearing range (it is NOT one setting suites all). It is called Noise-Ban Elite and is available from Leigh Biagio 012 809-6110.
