Join us for a “Walk in the Woods” at MAYFEST 2016 on Saturday, MAY 7 Introducing Mayfest 2016 Co-Chairs Mr. & Mrs. Rob & Mandy Hall 3 DIOCESE OF RAPID CITY May 2, 2015 OFFICE OF BISHOP Dear Friends of Mayfest, In an age where the traditions previously held dear by our ancestors are crumbling and fading due to neglect and abandonment, it is heartening to know that our Rapid City Catholic Schools embrace the Tradition of Excellence as one of the hallmarks of their ministry and mission in the Diocese of Rapid City. Through God’s great bounty, we enjoy the fruits of over fifty years of academic excellence, which continues today at St. Thomas More High School and Middle School and at St. Elizabeth Seton at Terra Sancta. The core of our Catholic School system is its religious foundation, forming a solid base upon which the spiritual, academic, service and social development of young people can be built. I believe that the results truly speak for themselves! Many, many thanks to all of our administrators, educators, parents and supporters who live as intentional disciples, pouring out their lives to ensure that our young people, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, have the opportunity to receive a high quality Catholic education. I am deeply grateful to the priests of our diocese who provide pastoral care, their presence and prayer for the success of our schools. This year’s Mayfest celebration is dedicated to those who have served or graduated from Cathedral High School, St. Martin Academy and St. Thomas More High School. I look forward to being with you on May 2 nd. Mayfest is a great opportunity for all of us to celebrate and show our support for the Catholic schools which provide so great a gift to our young people, our Church and the world. Be assured of my prayers for the Rapid City Catholic School System – the administrators, teachers, all who support and promote Catholic education, and most especially our young people. May God bless you and your families abundantly and may the good work begun in each of you through Catholic education be brought to fulfillment in lives lived intentionally for the Lord. Thank you for your generosity! Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Rev. Robert D. Gruss Bishop of Rapid City PO Box 678 Rapid City, South Dakota 57709-0678 (605) 343-3541 www.rapidcitydiocese.org 4 A MESSAGE FROM BARB HONEYCUTT Dear Friends of the Rapid City Catholic School System, Thank you for joining us this evening. Mayfest is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the many gifts God has provided for our Catholic schools. Each of you is a blessing and on behalf of everyone at the RCCSS, thank you for your prayers, commitment and financial support. Tonight we celebrate a Tradition of Excellence in Catholic education, which began many years ago in western South Dakota. This evening honors alumni from Cathedral High School, St. Martin’s Academy and St. Thomas More High School. The RCCSS is profoundly grateful for the hard work that has been accomplished by many committed individuals to ensure that Catholic education remains a choice for families in our diocese. St. Elizabeth Seton and St. Thomas More Middle and High School are committed to building on this Tradition of Excellence. Our mission to “Develop Personal and Academic Excellence in the Catholic Tradition” guides us daily as we work to ensure our students have the foundation to live morally and uprightly in a world that may say otherwise. The RCCSS teaches to the whole person, graduating tomorrow’s leaders who will fill a critical role in the future life of our Church, our communities, our country and our world. We are honored that Mr. Jim Kineen, a graduate of Cathedral High School, is with us this evening. Jim knows that Catholic education works and he recognizes excellence when he sees it. He is also very aware that in today’s world, more than ever, our young people need excellent schools. Jim is a great friend to all of us at the RCCSS and supports us in many ways. His financial support over the years has made it possible for us to accomplish many things that would not have been otherwise possible. Jim is a blessing to all of us, but most importantly, the students of the RCCSS. After all, we are here this evening for one reason, our kids. The RCCSS has a great future. Our enrollment is solid, with a 9% increase in students over the past 3 years. An all time high of 101 pre-school children are completing a wonderful year at Terra Sancta! Your generosity makes this all possible. As we look to the future, and how we can best serve our God, I ask that you continue to partner with us as we work together to “Develop Personal and Academic Excellence in the Catholic Tradition.” Enjoy the evening and may God bless you for all you do for his children. Gratefully in Christ, Barb Honeycutt Superintendent 5 6 A MESSAGE FROM JIM KINEEN Dear Alumni, Parents & Friends of RCCSS; My name is Jim Kineen. I am an alumnus of Rapid City Catholic Schools, having graduated from Cathedral High School in 1955... a long time ago! In my senior year at CHS I applied for admission to the University of Notre Dame. Due to the comprehensive and excellent education I received at CHS, I was selected for admission. I had never been to Notre Dame and – coming from a small high school – I was apprehensive about the difficulty of a tough academic curriculum and a large college program. To my pleasant surprise, I found the background I had received in English, Social Studies, and Math was very good and superior to many of my classmates from around the world. I know many of my CHS classmates experienced the same thing. I realized not only in college by throughout my business career in Omaha, NE what a blessing it was to have such a solid education at Cathedral High School and Cathedral Grade School. I write this letter in appreciation of Rapid City Catholic Schools, and in support of Mayfest. RCCSS has carried on the tradition of excellence established by its predecessor schools, Cathedral High School and St. Martin’s Academy; and in a relatively short period of time, set itself apart from other area high schools in terms of academic performance, and success in athletics and fine arts. This success hasn’t come easy. It’s the result of the hard work of many, and the generosity of even more. Our schools are blessed with dedicated teachers and administrators, gifted students and their supportive parents, and donors that understand the certainty of the return on their investments in Catholic education. I encourage everyone to be generous in their support of Mayfest 2015. We, the financial supporters of RCCSS, play a critical role in our schools accomplishing their mission. In closing, I make a special appeal to CHS and SMA graduates to recognize that the roots of STM run through them and their alma mater, and if you don’t already, begin to lend your support to our schools. Sincerely, James Kineen 7 DINNER MENU Hors' D'oeuvres Spinach & Artichoke Dip with Pita Chips Antipasto Skewers House Salad with Cucumber, Cherry Tomato, and Croutons London Broil Braised beef topped with a wild mushroom demiglaze Caramel Pecan Chicken Sautéed chicken breast finished with a delicate caramel sauce and toasted pecans Dinner provided by Holiday Inn Rushmore Plaza Catering Roasted Red Potatoes Broccolini and Julienne Carrots Dinner Rolls with Butter Dessert and Coffee Complementary wine provided by: Stop by the Firehouse Wine Cellars table to sample a variety of their featured wines from 5:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 8 9 AUCTION RULES General Auction Rules 1.
