2014 Introductions Catalog 10702 Seaman Road • Hebron, IL 60034 TEL: (815) 648-2788 • FAX: (815) 648-2072 TOLL FREE: (800) 648-2788 www.intrinsicperennialgardens.com Welcome to the future of plants… Its hard to believe we have sixteen new plants this year. That means there is something for every taste. In 2013 Red October Big bluestem was the best selling new plant and as availability increases I see sales continuing to grow too. Our newest Big Bluestem Dancing Wind has green and red highlights in August with the entire plant becoming more scarlet by the end of September - early October. Ginger Love Pennisetum was also a hit especially once people saw it bloom in August and September. We sold out quickly telling me its going to be a hit like its older sister Red Head. This year we have our first Indian grass, St. Louis was chosen for it orange red fall color standing out easily next to the silvered varieties in Fall. New for 2014 we have a vegetative Amsonia hubrictii Green Mist selected for its extra fine deep green foliage and great golden yellow fall color. Two New Echinaceas both with long hanging petals and 3’ plus stems. Hang Loose is a bi-color orange with red at the base of the cone above thin hairy foliage. Rocket Man takes off with spiked watermelon pink color that fades slowly over two months or more. Eupatorium perfoliatum Milk ‘n Cookies will have your mouth watering well before the milky white flowers in late summer. Red chocolate foliage is deepest in spring. These soft bushy plants are native to wet areas but tolerate a wide range of conditions growing 2-3’ tall plus depending on conditions. We have three new Geums with Dark and Stormy being my favorite. It emerges a deep orangey-red but older flowers fade to a true orange with both colors displayed at the same time. The semi-double flowers are held on red 15” plus stems and emerge from red buds too. Spanish Fly is a single gold that can have red spots at the tips and sometimes at the base of the petals. A rare color in the strongly orange group of Geums. Wet Kiss is a deeper vemillion red sport of Mai Tai that has hints of orange as well. Mai Tai along With Penstemon digitalis Pocahontas became part of the HGTV plant collection which should boost sales of this variety and add to the buzz of the cocktail series as it becomes more and more prominent in the trade. While Hemerocallis Techny Orange is not new since it was bred by Brother Charles it is new to the trade and a great addition to the late summer border. The thick 3-4’ stems and red-orange color go perfect with late summer early fall grasses. Phlox pilosa Bungalow Blue is a another sleeper and favorite this year. Many people do not know this species and most of the time its pinkish. The thin pointed foliage on strongly clumping plants grow 15-18” tall. May blooming plants have nice fragrance and hard to miss lavender-blue color with darker blue eyes. This color pretty much goes with anything blooming at this time of year. Prunella Under the Sea blooms in June on vigorous heavy blooming plants. Blue flowers on 6-8” stems are followed by attractive purple seedheads. a 2 On the cover: Geum x Dark and Stormy PPAF Rudbeckia Yellow Polkadot Bikini is a mounding plant that reaches close to two feet tall and wide with thin clean foliage. A perfect size to go with both tall and short plants. Sedum x Petrified is a chameleon of a plant starting out with gray new growth and bronze stems and highlights. As the season progresses plant deepen towards a smoky plum color until fall when the entire plant is burgundy highlighted by bi-color pink flowers in September. Disease resistant and a nice medium size around 15” tall and wide make this an easy plant to provide contrast with others. Last but definitely not least is Veronica Spike named for a long time employee that passed away in 2012. Spike did most of the dividing at the nursery and he is still missed. Clean low foliage on short clumps have extra long 6-8” spikes of bright blue, that peak around the 4th of July. Celebrate your season with some gardening and try some of these great new plants to make your gardens even more enjoyable. Sincerely, Brent Horvath p Our Breeding Philosophy P Our plants are bred and selected in the tough conditions of the Midwest with hot humid summers and cold wet winters. We strive to breed plants not as a means, but with an end in mind. Our goals are simple- improved, durable, ornamental garden plants for our own climate and the rest of the world! Our plants are bred to stand the test of time, if they don’t survive or thrive in the garden why bother. 3 d Intrinsic Introductions Genus species Variety/Color Intrinsic Introductions COMMON NAME Genus species Variety/Color COMMON NAME AlliumcernuumWine Drop Nodding Onion Alliumschenoprasum Rising Star Dwarf Chives Alliumx Pink Planet Ornamental Onion Amsoniahubrichtii Green MistBluestar Amsoniax Halfway to ArkansasBluestar Amsoniax Midway to MontanaBluestar Andropogongerardii Dancing Wind PPAF Big Bluestem Andropogongerardii Indian Warrior PPAF Big Bluestem Andropogongerardii Red October PPAF Big Bluestem Asterx Arrested DevelopmentAster Dianthussubacaulis Gary Eichhorn Cheddar Pinks Echinaceapurpurea Showoff Purple Coneflower Echinaceax Hang LooseConeflower Echinaceax Rocket ManConeflower Echinaceax Snow Cone Dwarf White Coneflower Eryngiumyuccifolium Prairie Moon Dwarf Rattlesnake Master Eupatoriumperfoliatum Milk and CookiesBoneset GeraniumsanguineumSt. ThereseCransebill GeraniumsoboliferumButterfly KissesCranesbill Geumx Alabama Slammer PP#23,750 Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Banana Daiquiri PPAF Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Cosmopolitan PPAF Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Dark and Stormy PPAF Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Gimlet PPAF - near white Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Limoncello Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Mai Tai PP#22,433 Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Sangria Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Sea Breeze PPAF - orange Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Spanish Fly PPAF Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Tequila Sunrise PP#21,514 Avens, Grecian Rose Geumx Wet Kiss PPAF Avens, Grecian Rose Hemerocallis x DustinDaylily Hemerocallisx On TopDaylily Hemerocallisx Techny OrangeDaylily HibiscusmoscheutosLou Emmons Hardy Hibiscus/ Rose Mallow IrispumilaProlific Purple Std.
