DESCRIPTION
Artist, graphic designer, and architect, John Graz studied at the Escola de Belas Artes of Geneva and learned lithography in Munich. He
came to Brazil in 1920 and soon became closely associated with the modernistic group, illustrating the magazine Klaxon.
He participated in the Semana de Arte Moderna (Modern Art week) in 1922, exhibiting 7 paintings. In 1923, he collaborated in interior
decoration projects with an architect who had just arrived from Russia, Gregori Warshavchik. Never leaving painting aside, Graz worked on
the architecture of interior environments and created pieces of furniture, painted frescos, produced sculptures and designed all accessories
necessary for his projects, in a conception of "synthesis of arts."
Responsible for decorating the interior of many residences of rich people in Sao Paulo, he designed pieces of furniture, lamps and finishing
pieces, like door-knobs, electric switches, designs for chinaware and also jewellery with a strong art deco influence. He also designed
pieces of furniture close in style to the Bauhaus and left drawings of some sculptural item, which bought him closer to the Scandinavian
School of Design. Many of his works relating to interior decoration and furniture were covered by fabric manufactured by his wife, Regina
Gomeide Graz. In the 1990's four of his furniture drawings (a chair, a table and two armchairs), were interpreted by Delia Beru regarding
the use of materials and fabricated by Moveis Teperman
