Well Spring is here for most of the country and I'm sure a
good number of us are happy about its arrival. It has been a
very busy winter for the USKBTC board and we are very
excited about several projects that have been developed
over the past few months.
The first is a new program that recognizes those Kerry Blue
Terriers among us that bring good to people. The award program is called "Kerry It Forward" and is
setup to honor Service Kerries, Therapy Kerries, Exemplary Companion Kerries, Search and Rescue
Kerries, Law Enforcement Kerries and any other Kerries that provide service to other people. Jann
Lane and June Hulit did all the research and development on this new program and you will find more
detailed information elsewhere in this issue of Blueprints. Thanks to all who worked very hard on
this project.
Another project that the board has been working on is a Policy and Procedures Manual. For years as
a club we have had committees that worked with rules and guidelines, that for the most part have
never been written down in a standardized system. Now thanks to the US Board Members we have
been "revisiting" many of our standing committees. After these committee's rules and guidelines
have been reviewed they are sent to Bob Nazak who has agreed to put them into a standardized
form to go into a Policy and Procedures book. This should make the daily operation of the club much
easier for everyone.
One of the standing committees the board has been reviewing is the Futurity. After much discussion
and research the Governors are considering some significant changes to the Futurity. Some of
these changes will hopefully be incorporated this year, so watch the USKBTC web site for details
and updates. Any changes will be announced by May 1, 2010, so again check the web site. If you have
any Futurity questions please give me a call and I will do all I can to help you.
For years the USKBTC has been trying to improve the ring conditions at Hatboro. Last year the
Grange did some improvements to the area we usually exhibit in and these upgrades made conditions
much better. The lighting in that area has always been an issue and after several failed attempts to
improve this problem, Larry Brown helped the USKBTC negotiate with the Grange an improvement to
the lighting system that the board felt the club could afford. The cost of the improvements to the
lighting was shared by the Grange, the Philadelphia Kerry Blue Terrier Club and the USKBTC. A special thank you to Larry Brown and the Philadelphia Club for helping get these improvements completed.
Hope you have had a great year so far and that we will see you at some of the shows. There are
some great specialties in the upcoming months. Look for all the details in this issue of Blueprints
and on the USKBTC website. Have a great spring and summer!

A Letter from the Editor. . .
After a winter that never seemed to end for some parts of the country,
spring has finally arrived and show season is gearing up. Those first specialties of the year will be here before you know it, and the snow will be just a
memory. We wish everyone the best of luck as the madness that is dog
showing begins anew! And please remember to share your specialty win
photos with all of us on our Gallery of Winners page. It’s easier than you
think!
Many of you may have noticed that this issue is later and smaller than usual.
When we had to postpone the deadline, some show information had to go to
the website and other items moved to later issues. But do take time to check
out those show ads that are in these pages along with the numerous raffle
tickets. You will also find news of a brand new award for our furry companions that focuses on the many and varied things they do for us, a report
about the Agility Invitational, and the usual show results.
As always, don’t hesitate to email if you have articles you want to submit, or
suggestions for articles you would like to see. Perhaps you’ve read a really
good training book, or something new about canine health. Share it with all
of us by writing a book review. Until next time. . .

Our entry was divided between the 16” and 20” classes
with Bailey and Betty Richardson’s Riley in 20” and
Tide, Birdie and Maggie Hall’s Riley in 16”.
Our results after four rounds of competition:
Maggie Hall and Birdie with four clean rounds to make
the finals in 11th place and win the Top Scoring Kerry
Medallion. This team ran another clean round in the finals to place 7th out of 91 dogs in 16”.
Tracey Fulmer and Bailey had 2 clean rounds for a total
score of 390, placing 43 out of 87 in 20”
Betty Richardson and Riley had 3 clean rounds for a score
of 385, placing 45 out of 87 in 20”
Maggie Hall and Riley had 1 clean round for a score of
385, placing 51 out of 91 in 16”
Eve Fishell and Tide had 3 clean rounds for a score of
363, placing 61 out of 91 in 16”
A great showing for all these teams and especially to
Birdie, the first Kerry to make the Finals at this event.

The real test of a team is the year’s work spent making it
to the top.
With the open entry for the Eukanuba National Championship, agility competition was moved to tents in the
parking lot. The running surface for the first time was

seemed to work well for most of the teams. Rain proved
to be quite a challenge both inside the tents and out. Fortunately by Saturday afternoon 2 X 4”s and plywood were

2009 Annual Report
The KBTC-StL celebrated its 33th Anniversary and
held its 28th annual Specialty on Saturday, September
12, 2009 in conjunction with the Missouri Rhineland
Kennel Club all breed show in Sullivan, Missouri.
Lucy Noe was sweepstakes judge, and Mr Dennis
Kniola judged the regular classes. We welcomed old
friends and new who supported our show with majors
for all four days of the show. Our hospitality tent offered refreshments to visitors, Kerry owners, and handlers, and was the location for a group dinner on Friday night, and a catered BBQ after Saturday’s show.
Many beautiful and useful donated gifts ensured our
very successful raffle.

2009 Annual Report
Our 2009 Annual Specialty was held on May 23rd
2009, in Honor of Ellie Zielinski, with Gerry Yeager
judging a lively bunch of young Kerries entered in the
Sweepstakes, and Vincent T. Grosso, judging 47 entries in the regular classes. Our club supported the entries on the remaining four days of the Memorial
Weekend Classic.
The Club has implemented a New Exhibitor Mentoring
Program for any new Kerry exhibitor. We as a Club
want to do all in its power to protect and advance the
interest of the Kerry Blue Terrier by encouraging

Bill Kearny brought up some of the problems of using an open
source program for our gallery.
Carol Wert advised the board that Dick Schaefer gifted the club
his extensive ring side video collection. Bill Kearny is looking
into being able to add video to the club website.
Charlene Dwyer, speaking for Lisa Frankland, brought up
strengthening the application by having the sponsors write
something about the prospective member. A heated discussion
followed, but the majority felt if a member in good standing
sponsors someone that is good enough. An additional comments section could be added. Bob Nazak will look at it.
Bob Nazak mentioned that upon going to the trophy storage
area he notice the engravings on the trophies are not up to date.
Bob will have the trophies engraved with last year’s and this
year’s winners.
Reita Nicholson suggested introductions of everyone at the
dinner. John Garahan will chair the general membership meeting.
Carl Ashby mentioned that the board needs to appoint two people to fill the vacancies on the Charitable Funds Committee.
Don Wilde and Tom Rogers are no longer on the Committee.
Scott made the motion to appoint Bob Nazak and Stephanie
Clark to fill these vacancies. No resolution on this item.
Chicago or Dallas will be chosen for the semi-annual board
meeting. To be determined later.

USKBTC 2009 Financial Report
Just as 2009 was a difficult year for most of us that was also true of the United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club,
Inc. We ended the year with an operating loss. This loss was primarily due to a significant reduction in donations to
the trophy fund for Montgomery County and action is being taken to assure trophy expense is more in line with donations. In addition, through the generosity of our members we raised $2173.75 for Charitable Funds which will be
transferred to Charitable Funds this fiscal year which will reduce our cash balances. The 2009 report includes the
Futurity payout for 2008 of approximately $1208.95 as well as the settlement for the Kimberton Terrier Trials in 2008
of $750.00. The Governors Expense of $163.50 was the cost of the meeting room at the annual Board meeting the
Montgomery County weekend. In 2009 the Futurity did not achieve a positive cash flow and the Governors will be
announcing soon how the payout will be handled. The balance in our cash accounts at the end of 2009 was
$33,805.07 versus $36,173.40. This is a reasonable balance for a Parent Club of our size.

The title of Register of Merit shall be awarded annually to the sire that has produced five AKC champions or four champions and a fifth published AKC titled get, and to the dam that has produced three AKC
champions or two champions and a third published AKC titled get.

A Word from Charitable Funds…
As many of you know the US Kerry Blue Charitable Fund was established in 2002. Its purpose was to
serve the Kerry Blue Terrier in four important areas:
1) Rescue Fund – this fund supports grants used to provide Kerry Blue Terrier rescue services.
2) Health and Genetics Fund - this fund makes grants in support of research in areas of health and genetics of particular importance to the Kerry Blue Terrier.
3) Education Fund – the education fund supports education of all those interested in the Kerry Blue Terrier
including publications, websites, and seminars.
4) General Fund – donations to this fund are used to support the work of the other funds through internal
grants to those funds. Undesignated gifts will initially be held in this fund.
Since the Fund was established we have worked diligently to build the assets of the Funds while undertaking major support of the PNA Research being done at the University of Missouri. To date we have
awarded over $20,000 in grants to support Health and Genetics, Education, and Rescue. This is quite impressive, since our Fund is relatively new compared to other Parent Clubs whose equivalent organizations
are often decades older than ours.
Our current objective is to continue to grow fund assets while undertaking occasional substantial support
such as the PNA Grant. We believe the real key to long term growth will be planned giving that includes
the Funds in the wills of our members. Other comparable organizations have used this method as the key
to growing their assets. The reality is that we must grow our financial resources substantially in order to
having a meaningful impact and that means it will take many years to be in a position to have a significant
impact on our core areas.
You can help by considering making the Funds one of the recipients of your estate. In addition, support an
area of interest today. We have grown our asset base through small gifts and that will be crucial to our
future.

USKBTC. All litter nominations must be made by a breeder who is a
member of the USKBTC. Puppies born between April 2, 2009 and
April 1, 2010 are eligible for the 2010 Futurity.
