Dear Readers,
Ninety years ago, the story of Weleda started in a small village in the canton of Basel-Landschaft,
Switzerland.
In 1921, the Austrian scientist and philosopher Rudolf Steiner and the Dutch doctor Ita Wegman came
up with the idea of expanding a pharmaceutical laboratory in Arlesheim for anthroposophic medicine
and holistic natural cosmetics. The “Internationale Laboratorien und Klinisch-Therapeutisches Institut
Arlesheim AG” was renamed Weleda in 1928.
Now, in 2012, the company is an international group with around 1900 employees and is active in more than fifty countries and
on every continent. This catalogue contains lots of information about the way Weleda operates, our product ingredients and
formulations, some of which can trace their origins back to when we were first established.
We want to demonstrate to you, our customer, what being “In harmony with nature and the human being” means to Weleda.
This includes environmentally friendly processing of raw materials and biodynamic cultivation (both of which contribute to the
exceptional quality of our products), as well as fair trade and targeted employee development. However, the most important thing,
and the thing which makes Weleda so unique, is that these aspects are based on respect, love and responsibility towards nature
and human beings, which has been characteristic of our activities since 1921; in this regard, Weleda can be seen as a pioneer of
sustainability.

We rigorously avoid synthetic fragrances, dyes and preservatives. In addition to special cultivation and wild sources over 70% of our plant based raw
materials are grown organically and biodynamically.

Being sustainable is part of who we are - it is the basis upon which
our company was founded.
Our raw materials are obtained through long term partnerships
with suppliers. These partnerships are often established in cooperation
with government development organisations, universities or international
environmental protection groups. When purchasing raw materials, we not
only take care to conserve the environment, but also ensure considerate
treatment of our employees, suppliers and partners. We focus on establishing
long-term projects, fair wages, supporting women and the balance between
work and family.
Weleda is a member of UEBT, a non-profit association
that promotes the ‘Sourcing with Respect’ of ingredients
that come from biodiversity. The association focuses on
the protection of biodiversity and the compliance with
Fair Trade.

Homeopathy
Where ‘like cures like’
Weleda also manufactures Homeopathic remedies. Developed by Dr Samuel
Hahnemann in the 18th century, homeopathy also follows a holistic
approach to good health stimulating the body’s natural ability to cure itself.
Its guiding principle is to choose a remedy that would produce similar
symptoms to those you wish to treat, i.e. ‘like cures like’. Each remedy is
created by a series of dilution and shaking processes to produce a minimum
‘potentised’ dose.
»Which strength? Over the counter homeopathic preparations are
generally available in two strengths: 6C and 30C.
6C Potencies
In most self-help cases 6C should be selected. 6C is useful when conditions
are mainly physical, such as coughs and colds, or when the condition
progresses at a slow pace.
30C Potencies
30C is selected when the condition is very active (acute) and/or when there
is an emotional element to the condition, such as occasional sleeplessness.
30C remedies should be taken as a short course only, unless prescribed by
a practitioner.
Ideally tablets shouldn’t be touched and should be taken in a clean mouth.
The remedies are intended for self-limiting, minor conditions. If they are
required for long periods of time or for chronic conditions, professional
advice should always be sought. When the condition improves there is no
need to continue taking the homeopathic remedy.
If a condition is persistent or potentially serious, please consult your doctor
or a qualified homeopath.
