Welcome to Casper, Wyoming...
Established in 1888, Casper promised adventure to all
who traveled its famous trails. It’s a promise that continues
to this day. Whether you seek the excitement of rivers,
mountains or plains, Casper is Wyoming’s Adventure
Capital!
More than a century ago, the North Platte River
presented a challenge to those who were determined to
journey safely across its waters on their historic journey
west on the Oregon, California, Pony Express, and
Mormon Trails. Today, the challenge lies in its worldclass fishing, kayaking and rafting. Cast a line at the
Miracle Mile or Gray Reef areas, where trophy-sized
rainbow and brown trout thrive in the pristine riffles and
pools. The Platte River Parkway’s White Water Park
is a fantastic one-mile stretch of the river with five manmade rock structures to create turbulent waters for one
exciting ride! This stretch is great for canoes and kayaks
as well as rafts.
While the early pioneers found heart-pounding
adventure traveling the waters and terrain around the
area, in the new century Alcova Reservoir is the perfect
recreation site for swimming, skiing, jetskiing, boating, and
camping. And for more adventurous souls, there’s

Casper Mountain–once a difficulty to traverse in early
years–is today a summer haven for those who love to
explore hiking or biking trails. The mountain also offers
an archery range, the Braille Trail, picnic and camping
sites, beautiful Garden Creek Waterfall, Crimson Dawn
Museum, and Beartrap Meadow—home to the Beartrap
Summer Festival.
It’s a safe bet Casper’s forerunners suffered hardship
with day-to-day life, but the obstacles of modern “Fore”
runners appen at the area’s five golf courses, including the
all new Three Crowns Golf Club—a Robert Trent Jones
Jr. designed public course! Casper also offers a variety of
spectator sports, including the College National Finals
Rodeo, the Casper Rockies professional baseball team,
and NIFL Wyoming Cavalry indoor football.
For modern pioneers, Casper offers up history in
comfort with many museums and historical sites. The
National Historic Trails Interpretive Center celebrates
those brave souls who helped establish the adventure
capital while the Nicolaysen Art Museum and the kidfriendly Science Zone are not to be missed.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TROUT
So you’ve finally
decided to take that
weekend fishing trip you’ve been
dreaming about for years.
Good news—You couldn’t have picked a better
destination! Lakes, rivers, streams; you’ll find plenty of
places to cast your line in Casper.
The North Platte River runs right through Casper, which
makes it the ideal headquarters for many of the top flyfishing guides and outfitters in Wyoming. One such outfitter
is the North Platte Lodge (307.237.1182).
Established in 1998, the Lodge is one
of the very first to be established on
Casper’s popular river. “We run
day trips and up to eight clients
can stay in the lodge,” explains
owner and Adventure Guide
Trent Tatum. “We employ nine
or ten guides, and last year, we
did 904 trips.”
According to Tatum, there are a number of experienced
guides and outfitters who work the North Platte River. A
typical Lodge package includes “a full-day guided trip,
lunch, and all your flies, tippet, and leader material.”
Information about many other Casper area guides and
outfitters can be found at http://www.casperwyoming.
info.
Before you head out for a big day on the water, you’ll
want to get your gear in order. Casper has plenty of
convenient places to stock up. “[There is] a fly shop in
Alcova called The Reef (307.232.9128),” Tatum explains.
“If you forget something or if you want to pick up some
flies, they’re very well stocked. They have guides on
the water every day, so they can give you an accurate
fishing report.”
Other resources include Cowboy
Drifters (307.331-2031), Sportsman’s Warehouse
(307.233.3700), The Ugly Bug Fly Shop (307.234.6905),
and the Platte River Fly Shop (307.237.5997).”
Once you’ve got everything you need for your
adventure, Tatum recommends floating the river. “This is
an extremely beginner-friendly river. I can’t emphasize
that enough. There’s an abundance of fish, and it’s
easy to learn on.” And although the North Platte can be

PlanNING A PERFECT DAY ON THE RIVER
Your day will be a full one, and you’ll need plenty of
energy, so hit Sherrie’s Place (307.235.3513) to fill up on eggs,
pancakes and cinnamon rolls so big you’ll need a to-go bag.
After you’ve had all you can eat, walk two blocks southeast to

fished for hundreds of miles,
Tatum points out that many areas near
Casper—Miracle Mile, Pathfinder Reservoir,
Seminoe, and Alcova (Bureau of Land Management,
307.261.7600)—are growing in popularity. “American
Angler Magazine voted the North Platte River Grey
Reef section the number one big fish fishery in the
world. Not in the United States — in the world!”
As for the kinds of fish you’ll be coaxing onto
your line? Anglers in Casper can expect to catch
Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Snake River Cutthroat,
Walleye, and even Cuttbow, a Cutthroat/Rainbow
hybrid. Casper’s combination of unsullied beauty
and bountiful fish draws even the big guns to Casper.
“I was floating along the Platte this past fall and there
was a gentleman fishing in the middle of the river. It
happened to be John Gierach. He’s probably one of
the more recognized names in the sport now because
he’s an author. It was kind of neat to see him out
there!” Although not everyone you’ll encounter along
the North Platte is famous, Tatum insists that most
of the folks are, at the very least, interesting. “It’s
a funny business,” he grins. “Fly fishermen are a
strange group.”

After returning to Casper for a quick shower and a
short nap, you’ll be ready for a night out on the town. Start with
a cozy Italian dinner at Botticelli Ristorante (307.266.2700).
Sip some wine, enjoy some pasta, and remember to save room
for cheesecake! With renewed energy, set out to explore some
of Casper’s favorite bars—Enjoy a microbrew downtown at the
historic Wonder Bar (307.234.4110) or head to the Beacon
Club (307.577.1503) for some suds and dancing. Wrap up your
adventure with a trip to Sidelines Sports Bar (307.234.9444),
where you can relax over a quick game of pool while rehearsing
your “fish tales” for everyone back home.

Adventure Guide David Raper says that checking out
Casper’s Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Three Crowns
Golf Club (307.472.5591) should top your list. After all,
explains Raper, “We just won an award as being one of the
top 50 new golf courses in the country!”
One of the most striking features of Three Crowns is the
fact that it is built on a former Amoco Oil Refinery site along
the North Platte River. There are 110 acres of playable
turf, with A-1 bentgrass on the putting surfaces. The tees,
fairway and rough are predominately Kentucky Bluegrass.
Other features are white sand from Idaho, and eight bodies
of water scattered throughout the course. Golfweek listed
Three Crowns as one of the “50 Best New Courses” in
2006.
“One of the unique features about Three Crowns is the
Lavia Linda Trail. It’s a walking path that circles the entire
golf course with an extension that takes you along

fresh air and have a great walk while your husband or wife
is playing golf. Also, we’re so close to downtown—it’s 10
minutes to anywhere, so you have lots of opportunities to
stay occupied and entertain yourself while others enjoy the
great golf course.”
For avid golfers, however, hitting the links at Three Crowns
is only the beginning. “I would also suggest exploring the
other courses in town,” says Raper. “Each offers something
unique for both the beginner and the seasoned pro.”
Paradise Valley County Club (307.234.3079), for
example, has undergone recent construction (a new irrigation
system, the lengthening of holes and new sand bunkers)
that Raper says “continues to enhance the golf course. It’s
a different type of layout as compared to Three Crowns—
there are more mature trees and it’s been established for
quite some time.”
Similarly, David says the Casper Municipal Golf
Course (307.237.9470) is special because “they have 3
nines. They present a good challenge. The greens are very
difficult to play.” And don’t forget the Casper Country Club

SAND, SUN, & FUN AT ALCOVA
Whether you prefer relaxing
on sandy beaches or diving
into cool, inviting waters—
Alcova Reservoir is an ideal place to spend a warm
Wyoming day. Roughly 30 miles south of Casper (take
Highway 220), Alcova beckons with its stunning beauty,
outdoor adventure opportunities, and unique geology.
For those intent on catching some rays, Sandy Beach
is the perfect lakeside destination. Just a slight jog off of
Lake Shore Drive and you’re ready to ease down the hill,
beach towels
and blankets in hand, to bask in
the glow of a giant summer sun.
Sandy Beach also affords the
opportunity for swimming and
beach volleyball, with picnic
and restroom facilities just a
stone’s throw away.

If building sandcastles
seems a bit tame, travel
up Lake Shore Drive to Okie Beach. Not only is Okie
great for camping, it’s the ideal spot to launch all types of
watercraft. Fishing boats, paddle boats, waterskis, wake
boards, jet skis, and life vests can be rented from Alcova
Lakeside Marina (307.472.6666) for either half or fullday use. Hang on tight while skimming over the waves

some truly spectacular scenery.
When chow time rolls around, skipper your ship back
to the marina’s restaurant and lounge for breakfast, lunch,
or dinner with full cocktail service available. Or, if roughing
it is more your style, you’ll find several quiet campsites
and picnic areas directly across the lake. To get there,
bypass Lake Shore Drive and follow the signs to Black
Beach Road. Strewn with boulders and sagebrush, the
remote Black Beach Campground is the perfect place to
kick back, cast a line, and catch a trout or two for supper.
For a little late afternoon entertainment, head up the
road to the Cottonwood Creek Dinosaur Trail. This twomile trail rises over 300 feet, and a two to three hour hike
awaits for those who are up for a challenge. Due to the
rough terrain, the trail is not accessable to the mobilityimpared, although interpretive signs located at the

GET VERTICAL AT ALCOVA’S FREMONT CANYON
Rock-climbing near Alcova’s Fremont Canyon
offers “THE best granite-climbing in the US,” according
to Micah Rush, owner of The Peak Climbing Gym
(307.267.4815) in Casper. Regardless of your skill level,
breathtaking views of the canyon and Alcova Reservoir are
your reward when climbing at Fremont. The area offers
hundreds of high-quality routes for all skill levels, ranging

you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake as you
catch a glimpse of one of Casper’s oldest residents—
Camarasaurus, an ancient dinosaur discovered by a
class of 5th grade field science students.
To find Fremont Canyon, take Highway 220 south out
of Casper towards Alcova. Upon reaching the town of Alcova,
turn south and go 7.5 miles to a fork in the road. Continue to
the right 3 miles, which leads directly to Fremont Bridge.
Before hitting the road, stock up on climbing
equipment and local maps, test your skills on the climbing
wall at The Peak (make it a workout-—they have showers),
or even book a guide for your excursion. The gym is open
Monday-Friday 2 PM-9 PM and Saturdays 10 AM-6 PM at 408
North Beverly Street in Casper.
Before the sun starts to sink, head back to your
campsite to pitch a tent and build a cozy campfire.
Don’t worry if you forgot the marshmallows because
Sloanes General Store (307.234-2066) is just a quick
drive from camp. At Sloanes, you’ll find a wide range
of groceries and camping supplies, including ice, cold
beverages, and the aforementioned marshmallows.
And if you’d prefer to spend the night in Alcova without
“roughing it,” Sloanes offers the Inn at Alcova (307234-2066). Each of their 8 cabins sleeps up to five
people, with full kitchens, two queen beds and a set of
bunk beds. Add to that Dish Network and telephones,
and you’ve got all the comforts of home!
On your way home, be sure to stop in at the Sunset
Grill (307.472.3200) for a delicious hamburger. Don’t
forget to write your thoughts on a dollar bill and add it
to the wall—it’s tradition!

FUN FROM DUSK ‘TIL DAWN!
When the day closes with
a magnificent sunset on
the western horizon,
the night is just beginning at Casper’s clubs, bars, and
restaurants! What’s your poison? A night of comedy? A
live band? A DJ at the turntables with a mixologist behind
the bar? A film followed by a discussion at a late-night
cyber-café? A romantic dinner for two? Whatever your
idea of night-time fun, Casper has it!
Casper dearly believes the idiom “the night is still
young.” Whether we are enjoying a great jazz improv on
the lawn of the Nicolaysen Art Museum for Wednesday
Night Live (307.235.5247) with a tap beer in hand and
our dog at our side, or we are amongst the more formal
surroundings of the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra
(307.266.1478), Casperites take music appreciation
seriously (in fact, so do some of our dogs). Discuss
your favorite riffs with the after-concert dessert bar and
tapas at Gegi’s at the Atrium Plaza. Or if you’re

more information about clubs & pubs). Don’t miss any
opportunity to see Lore—Casper’s own tap-dancing,
guitar-playing, harmonica-blowing, request-singing, oneman party machine in a well-worn hat.
Did that new movie you’ve been dying to see open the
weekend you went out of town? No worries! Casper has
seventeen movie screens, and many auditoriums feature
stadium seating, giant screens, and the best in digital
sound quality. One of the oldest playhouses, The Rialto
(307.472.4747), is the best place to catch an art house
release, and—in the old-time tradition-—the original
balcony is open for more romantic seating. Fellow oldtimer, The America Stadium Theatre (307.472.4747) is
completely revamped with the biggest screen in Wyoming
for wrap-around blockbuster enjoyment. Just a few steps
from both are the three-screen Fox and the new, state-ofthe-art eight-screen Iris Stadium 8 (307.472.4747).

A NIGHT ON THE TOWN
EXPLORING CASPER’S DIVERSE NIGHTCLUBS
From pubs to clubs, Nightlife Adventure Guide Chad Lore
says that whichever venue you hit, “you’re not going to be sitting
alone for too long.” Chad should know; a local comedian/
musician/entertainer, he performs at many of Casper’s hot
spots on a regular basis. One of his longest running gigs
is Wednesday nights at Casper’s “world famous” Wonder
Bar (307.234.4110). Known for its food, microbrews and
history, this non-smoking establishment attracts a diverse
crowd that often sings along with Lore once he takes the
stage. “It might get a little wild!” he warns.
For a special treat, Chad suggests sneakin’ to the
Beacon Club (307-577-1503). A true western bar, the
great meal!
Beacon is where many locals go for live music and westGood friends,
ern dancing. Chad also recommends Sidelines Sports

Hour from 4 to 10 PM every night of the week. Although billed
as a sports bar, its youthful clientele stays out late to boogie to
latte. Metro is also a cyber-café with original art, the

New York Times, and comfy sofas galore.
If you’d prefer to start the evening with light
refreshments and heavy thinking, then head to
Moody Brews (307.472.5114) for a quiet pub table,
homemade gelato and a game of chess with the local
champ. After that cool-down, Stage III Community
Theatre (307.234.0946) offers a full season of quality
entertainment.
Other favorite haunts include the Pump Room at
Poor Boys Steakhouse (307.237.8325) for its cozy atmosphere, Frosty’s (307.234.3827) for juicy burgers, the Sandbar
Lounge (307.266.2745) for dart and pool action, Old Chicagos (307.473.1900) for nightly trivia, and Karen & Jim’s Movie
Star Lounge (307.266.4976) for live karaoke Saturday
nights. For a complete list of bars and nightclubs, be sure to check out the “nightlife”
section of CasperWyoming.info!
Got an itch for the witching hour? Then make
certain you book a reservation for the popular Ghost
Tour by candlelight, offered by Painted Past
(307.267.7243). Their professional actors bring
the theatre to our historic streets, and you’ll
have a ghoulishly good time scaring up
Casper’s friendly ghosts.
So if the night is still young—just like your
spirit—let Casper see you through ‘til the break

Shopping
There is no doubt that
Casper offers the best
shopping in the state, with
a wide array of homegrown boutiques, national
chains, and big box stores
to choose from. Downtown
Casper has a variety
of unique shops
offering clothing, books, music,

Hiking and Mountain Biking
Whether cruising along by mountain bike or roaming about
on foot, there are several hiking and biking trails to explore
in Casper. Rotary Park, located just south of Casper, is
home to the Garden Creek Falls and the 4.5 mile Bridle
Trail. The Platte River Parkway (see map on page 16) also

runs nearly 10 miles along the river, and can be accessed
at many points (Morad Park, Casper White Water Park
and Holiday Inn on the River are popular trail heads).
Casper Mountain
Casper Mountain offers a variety of summertime activities.
While mountain biking and hiking can be enjoyed on all
public mountain trails, the Lee McCune Braille Trail
offers a very special hiking trail that can be enjoyed by
the sighted and visually-impared alike. Beartrap Meadow
is a popular camping and picnic area that also hosts
the Beartrap Summer Festival in July (see calendar on
page 4). Crimson Dawn, home to both a museum and
a plethora of local folklore, holds a Summer Solstice
celebration every year. And finally, no trip to Casper
is complete without a stop at the Garden Creek Falls,
located in Rotary Park near the base of the mountain.
Live Music
Casper’s music scene is
a diverse one. From the
Wyoming
Symphony
Orchestra (307.266.1478)
to local rock and punk
bands, there’s always a
show in the works. Fairweather highlights include
City Band Concerts, held each Thursday at Washington
Park’s bandshell, Wednesday Night Live at the Nicolaysen
Art Museum (307.235.5247), the Beartrap Summer
Festival (July 21-22), the Citywide Fireworks Festival

Historic Trail
Activities
The National Historic

(307.261-7700) is one of
Wyoming’s finest museums.
Featuring state-of-the-art
technology, this interactive
center allows visitors to
experience what pioneer life was like for the early emigrants
traveling on the Oregon Trail, California Trail, Mormon Trail,
Bozeman Trail, Bridger Trail and Pony Express Trail. The
highlight of the center is an award-winning audiovisual
presentation illustrating the lives and times of early
pioneers, including the Native American history of that era.
Other sites of historical significance in the area include

Museums
Whether your interest is art (The Nicolaysen Art

prehistoric fossils, (The Tate Geological Museum,
307.268.2447) or the planets (Casper Planetarium,
307.577.0310), Casper offers numerous museums sure to
both educate and fascinate. Find a complete list online at

Rodeo
What would a visit to the
Cowboy State be without a
rodeo? Each year, Casper
is proud to play host to
the world’s best rodeo
athletes.
The
College
National Finals Rodeo
(June 10-16) is THE top
collegiate rodeo where
competitors from colleges and universities across the
U.S. compete for national titles in saddle bronc, bareback,
bull riding, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. Rodeo
fans will also want to catch the 60th Annual Central
Wyoming Fair and Rodeo (July 6-14), featuring heartpounding PRCA action that the whole family can enjoy.
Professional Sports
Casper has two professional sports teams that compete during
the summer months. The Casper Rockies (307.232.1111)
play 38 baseball games at Mike Lansing Field. The
Wyoming Cavalry (307.232.8170) play professional indoor

WYOMING’S MEETING CAPITAL
Why choose Casper
for your next meeting,
convention or event?
With more than 2300 hotel/motel rooms and approximately
180,000 square feet of meeting space, Casper has the
ability to host a wide variety of events. Susan Freeman,
CACVB Director of Motor Coach Tours and Competitions,
knows there are other reasons that Casper frequently
plays host. “Casper is centrally located, and that makes
it very handy,” she says. And because it offers an
exceptional combination of dining, shopping, cultural, and
leisure activities, Freeman believes Casper is particularly
successful in attracting “large groups, such as the Ladies
of the Oriental Shrine. We get requests from ladies all
over the country saying ‘We’re going to be here for four
days—what else is there to do?’ ”
When you contact the Casper Area Convention and
Visitors Bureau (800.852.1889) for assistance with an
event, the first thing Meetings and Conventions Director
Carol Chapin needs to know is the dates you’re
PAGE
20
AdventureGuide

going to be here and how flexible those dates are. “I ask
them some questions regarding the meeting pattern—is it
Monday through Friday or is it a weekend event?” Then
she looks at the specifics of the event—is it an all-day
event? Are food functions involved? Is there a trade
show? How many sleeping rooms will be needed?
After answering these questions, the next step is
preparation of a Request for Proposal (RFP) that is sent
out to all potential host properties. Each responds with
availabilities and pricing information, and that information
is then turned back over to the booking company for
review. Eventually, additional information about Casper
is provided—locations of restaurants, what sorts of
entertainment is available, and the different services

Any organization whose request includes more
than 500 people garners “special attention.” Along
with providing the usual RFP info, Chapin’s team
extends an invitation for organization representatives
to visit Casper and tour the facilities. The only part of
the process that’s out-of-pocket for the visitor is air
fare.
Another service provided for those who book
their meetings and conventions through the CACVB
is what Chapin calls her “Casper the friendly host”
service —that is, registration assistance. It’s this kind
of personalized service that sets the CACVB apart.
“I think the service we provide is what draws people
here. They can book their hotel rooms and their
convention in the same place. We fit into everybody’s
budget, because we don’t cost a dime.”

oms and approximately 180,000 square feet
ability to host a wide variety of events.”
For the Casper Area Visitors and Convention
staff, planning for the AHSGR convention began in 1998. First,
CACVB staff traveled to the 1998 Wichita convention to observe
the convention, which typically consists of business meetings
and guest speakers, with a heavy emphasis on genealogy. Over
the next 12 months, representatives of the AHSGR and CACVB
were in constant contact, with the CACVB representatives at
every planning meeting.
Details such as booking rooms, sending out brochures,
and arranging for “friendly hosts” kept the CACVB staff busy. But
all the planning and hard work payed off when over 700 members
made the trip to Casper, making the 1999 conference the largest
AHSGR gathering in the past decade.
National Convention Co-chair Patti Sellenrick believes
there were three important reasons for the 1999 convention’s
success. Among them, (according to CACVB notes): “1. Curiosity
about Wyoming—most people had never been to the Cowboy
State; 2. Affordable rooms —rooms in Casper cost 35% less than
rooms in other host cities; 3. All the work the CACVB did with
mailings and publicity.”
This success story looks as though it will continue into the future.
In 2008, the AHSGR will once again hold their convention in
Casper, this time combining their efforts with another group: the
Germans from Russia Heritage Society.

related to their specific event. “It’s a one-stop shop
with us,” Chapin asserts. And best of all, “We don’t
charge any fees for our service.”
On July 7, 1999, the American
Historical Society of Germans from
Russia (AHSGR) held their annual
convention at the Parkway Plaza in
Casper, Wyoming. At first glance,
Casper seems a rather unconventional
choice for an international group whose
mission is “the discovery, collection,
preservation, and dissemination of

cultural heritage and genealogy of
Germanic Settlers in the Russian
Empire and their descendants.” In the years prior to the
Casper conference, the AHSGR held their gatherings in San Jose,
California and Wichita, Kansas. But when Wyoming Governor
and AHSGR member Jim Geringer suggested the group consider
Casper as host city for their 1999 conference, people listened.
