A GOLFER’S PARADISE
In the rugged Old
West era, Casper
promised adventure
to all who traveled
its famous trails.
We’ve come a long way from
our days as a frontier outpost, but
the same sense of free-wheeling
adventure still draws visitors to
Wyoming’s Adventure Capital.
With one foot in the past and an eye
toward the future, Casper is a yearround destination that offers the very
best in historical, recreational, cultural
and entertainment experiences.
If you’re looking to reconnect with
nature the old-fashioned way, spend
the day fishing for trophy sized
rainbow and brown trout that thrive
in the historic North Platte River —
the same river that challenged early
settlers on their historic pilgrimage
west on the Oregon, California,
Pony Express, and Mormon Trails.
Outdoorsmen will also appreciate the

area’s wide variety of game animals,
including
antelope, deer, elk,
pheasant, and duck.
It’s a safe bet Casper’s forerunners
suffered hardship with day-to-day life,
but the obstacles of today’s “Fore”
runners happen at the area’s five golf
courses, including Three Crowns
Golf Club—a Robert Trent Jones Jr.
designed public course! Casper also
offers a variety of spectator sports,
including the College National
Finals Rodeo, the Casper Ghosts
professional baseball team, and AIFL
Wyoming Cavalry indoor football.
Casper Mountain — a difficulty
to traverse in those early years — is
today a wonderland for those who
love to explore its many hiking, biking,
snowmobiling and ski trails. The
mountain also offers an archery range,
the Braille Trail, picnic and camping
sites, Garden Creek Waterfall,
Crimson Dawn Museum, Hogadon
Ski Area, the Nordic Trail Center
and Beartrap Meadow—home to the
Beartrap Summer Festival.

In Casper, adventure awaits the
mind and spirit as well. For modern
pioneers, Casper offers up history
in comfort with many museums and
historical sites. The National Historic
Trails Interpretive Center celebrates
those brave souls who helped
establish the Adventure Capital, while
the Nicolaysen Art Museum and the
kid-oriented Science Zone provide
inspiration for the creative soul.
Just as Casper’s forefathers
balanced the hardships of day-today life with a love of the arts, today
you’ll find a wide range of cultural
opportunities here. ARTCORE, Stage
III Theatre, The Casper Children’s
Chorale, The Wyoming Symphony
Orchestra and Casper College
each deliver cultural experiences in
a variety of mediums: music, dance,
theatre and visual arts, to name a
few. And the Casper Events Center
boasts The Best of Broadway series
which will keep even the most devout
city slicker entertained throughout the
year.

SPRING
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TROUT
So you’ve finally
decided to take that
weekend fishing trip
you’ve been dreaming
about for years . . .
North Platte Lodge (307.237.1182).
Established in 1998, the Lodge is one
of the very first to be established on
Casper’s popular river. “We run day
trips and up to eight clients can stay
in the lodge,” explains owner and
Adventure Guide Trent Tatum.
Good news — You couldn’t have
picked a better destination! Lakes,
rivers, streams; you’ll find plenty of
places to cast your line in Casper and
Natrona County.
According to Tatum, there are a
number of experienced guides and
outfitters who work the North Platte
River. A typical package can include
“a full day guided trip, lunch, and all
your flies, tippet, and leader material.”
Information about Casper area guides
and outfitters can be found online at
CasperWyoming.info.

90 holes, Casper is
the Cowboy State
golf destination.
When planning your next great golf
getaway, put Casper at the top of
your list. After all, Golfweek recently
recognized Casper’s Three Crowns
Golf Club as one of the 50 Best New
Courses in the world. And according
to Kyle Nuss, Executive Director of
the Wyoming State Golf Association,
Casper offers something for golfers of
every stripe.
The world class Three Crowns
Golf Club (307.472.7696) features
a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed
course. According to Nuss, Jones, Jr.
is “a renowned golf course architect
who has brought a tremendous facility

that there’s three unique nines,” Nuss

their game.
to the city of Casper.” There are
110 acres of playable turf, with A-1
bentgrass on the putting surfaces,
Kentucky bluegrass roughs, white
sand from Idaho, and eight bodies
of water scattered throughout.
Amazingly, this award-winning course
was built on the remediated site of
a former oil refinery. The property
is the crown jewel of the 350-acre
Platte River Commons, which also
has a restaurant, a running trail, and
a whitewater kayak park.
Avid golfers will also want to check
out the Casper Municipal Golf
Course (307.237.9470), a 27-hole
For a more “grass roots” experience,
Nuss recommends the pasture golf
course at the Salt Creek Country
Club (Highway 387 in Midwest). For
just $2, adventurous golfers can play
nine holes of mowed prairie grass
fairways and sand greens.
If playing a private course is more
your style, check out Paradise
Valley Country Club (307.234.3079)
or the Casper Country Club
(307.265.0767). “The Paradise Valley
course was renovated in 2007 to add
new bunkers,” notes Nuss. “They also
revamped some greens and tees.”
Nuss points out that this facility also
has a practice range, restaurant and
lounge. The Country Club, on the
other hand, is an 18-hole course with
back-and-forth tree-lined fairways.
Fully private, this club offers a full pro
shop and restaurant.
Even when the skies promise rain or
snow, Casper has you covered. When
poor weather threatens your tee time,
Nuss suggests one of Casper’s three
indoor golf facilities. Lifetime Fitness
(307.473.2582) has an indoor driving
range and putting green with five
hitting areas, while the Wyoming
Athletic Club (307.265.6928) and
Durbin Street Golf (307.265.4677)
offer an indoor golf simulator.
Golf aficionado or not, you’ll find
adventure at every turn. “The North
Platte River has some of the best
fly-fishing opportunities in the world!”
reminds Nuss. And, when you factor
in the area’s shopping, dining, and
recreation, you have all the makings of
a memorable vacation. So grab your
clubs, your family and your fishing
pole and find out what the Adventure
Capital has in store for you!

SUMMER
SAND, SUN & FUN!
Sunny days and soaring temperatures —
Summer in the Rockies can get hot in a hurry.
That’s what makes the variety of
water activities in Natrona County
so refreshing! Whether your idea of
the perfect day on the water includes
swimming, sailing, kayaking, skiing,
or something more extreme, Casper
has the best places for diving into
adventure.
The North Platte River runs right
through Casper, and floating the river
is a popular choice for relaxing on a
hot summer day. Rafters, canoers,
and paddle boaters can launch from
many different spots along the river
8|
to enjoy a float that lasts from one
to six hours. One popular long float
begins at Morad Park (West of CY
Avenue at Wyoming Blvd.) and winds
through town, offering floaters a lazy
day of pleasant scenery, local wildlife,
and the chance to see a side of the
city that many never do. If you go, be
certain to pack plenty of sunscreen
and don’t forget to bring a life jacket!
Free life jackets can be borrowed
from any Casper area fire station
(CasperFire.com).
If you’re seeking more action, the
Platte River Parkway Whitewater
Park (PlatteRiverParkway.org) is the
place to be. It has several man-made
structures that enhance the thrills of
riding the rapids. There’s also a great
spot for rodeo boating and freestyle
kayaking. Back Country Kayak
School (307.277.4941) offers guided
service to this and other parts of the
river.
Traveling up the river off Hwy
220, the waters of Alcova Lake
and Pathfinder Reservoir beckon
with their stunning beauty, outdoor
adventure opportunities, and unique
geology. For those intent on catching
some rays, Sandy Beach at Alcova
is the perfect lakeside destination.
Just a slight jog off of Lake Shore
Drive and you’re ready to ease down
the hill, beach towels and blankets in
hand, to bask in the glow of a giant
summer sun. Sandy Beach also
affords the opportunity for swimming
and beach volleyball, with picnic and
restroom facilities just a stone’s throw
away.
If building sand castles seems a bit
tame, travel up Lake Shore Drive to
Okie Beach. Not only is Okie great
for camping, it’s the ideal spot to
launch all types of watercraft. Fishing
boats, paddle boats, waterskis, wake
boards, jet skis, and life vests can be
rented from Alcova Lakeside Marina

(307.472.6666). Hang on tight while
skimming over the waves on a Seadoo, or take your boat for a moonlit
cruise up Fremont Canyon to catch
some truly spectacular scenery.
When chow time rolls around,
skipper your ship back to the marina’s
restaurant and lounge for dining
with full cocktail service available.
Or, if roughing it is more your style,
you’ll find several quiet campsites
and picnic areas along Black Beach
Road. Strewn with boulders and
sagebrush, the remote Black Beach
Campground is the perfect place to
kick back, cast a line, and catch a
trout or two for supper.
Before the sun starts to sink, head
back to your campsite to pitch a tent
and build a cozy campfire. If you
forgot the marshmallows, Sloanes
(307.234.2066) is just a quick drive
from camp. There, you’ll find a wide
range of groceries and camping
supplies, cold beverages, ice, and
marshmallows.
GETTING VERTICAL AT ALCOVA’S
FREMONT CANYON
According to local climbers,
Fremont Canyon is one of
the sport’s best-kept secrets,
featuring some the best granite
climbing in the United States.
The area offers hundreds of
high-quality routes for climbers
of all skill levels, ranging from 40
to 400+ feet in length, and 5.6 to
5.13d in difficulty. Regardless of
the route you take, breathtaking
views of the canyon and Alcova
Reservoir are your reward when
you climb Fremont Canyon.
To find the canyon’s best
climbing, take Highway 220
south towards the town of Alcova.
Once you hit town, turn south and
go 7.5 miles to a fork in the road.
Continue to the right 3 miles, and
you’re at Fremont Canyon Bridge
— the trailhead for your climbing
excursion! Before hitting the road,
stock up on climbing equipment
and local maps or test your skills
on the climbing wall at The Peak

just sing about the rodeo life—he
lived it. After his death in 2005, the
annual Chris LeDoux Tribute Rodeo
was started to honor his memory.
2009’s event starts with an art show
containing works from LeDoux’s
private collection. On Saturday, a
PRCA rodeo kicks into gear, followed
by a concert featuring members of
LeDoux’s former band.

CULTURE
It’s said that those who
forget the past are
doomed to repeat it.
But for Adventure Guide Jude Carino,
repeating the past is all a part of the
fun! As former Director of Casper’s
National Historic Trails Interpretive
Center
(307.261.7700),
Carino
knows a thing or two about Western
heritage. With the Oregon, Mormon,
California, and Pony Express Trails
all converging in Casper, “every one

what is now Casper; every person

Natives who lived here before settlers
arrived. Their stories are presented
through multimedia presentations,
life-like dioramas, and interactive
experiences — you can even take
a virtual ride across the North Platte
River in a covered wagon!
But the Trails Center is just one of
many museums that make Casper a
superb classroom. “People must also
go see Fort Caspar (307.235.8462),”
Carino asserts. The Fort, which
began as a trading post in 1859, is
now an open air museum, featuring
a brand new indoor museum as well
as renovated wooden buildings and
even a wooden stockade! Military
history buffs will also want to make
When you’re ready to slide back into
the present, Carino reminds us that
Casper has several modern offerings.
Pick any furry critter, any moment
in history, or even your favorite
artist, and you’ll find a museum in
Casper to go along with it. Start with
The Nicolaysen Art Museum &
Discovery Center (307.235.5247) —
“Art lovers of the world come and see
it!” With over 25,000 square feet of
space and nine galleries, you’ll want
to block out a few hours to take it
all in. Past shows have highlighted
the works of Andy Warhol and Carol
Swinney, and if plan ahead, you’ll
catch an auction, art show or festival
during your visit.
There’s also the Tate Geological
Museum (307.268.2447), which
boasts over 3,000 fossil and mineral
specimens, including dinosaurs. If you
prefer slightly less ancient flora and
fauna, be sure to drop by the Werner
Wildlife Museum (307.235.2108)
and the Audubon Center at Garden
Creek (307.473.1987). Each facility
offers a unique experience of local
wildlife — from galleries of mounted
specimens to habitat exploration and
hiking.
Not all
museum experiences
are limited to daylight hours. The
Casper Planetarium (307.577.0310)
hosts a variety of programs, literally
depending on how and when the
stars align! Another favorite for kids
and parents alike is The Science
Zone (307.473.9663). “It’s very hard
to find ways to engage children in a
learning situation,” Carino explains,
“but the Science Zone has done it.”
The excitement includes the Bubble
Zone, an entire room dedicated to
making awesome bubbles, and the
Zoo Zone, which showcases live
reptiles, spiders and mammals from
all over the world.

WINTER
WINTER WONDERLAND
If the first gentle
snowflake of the
season makes
you yearn for the
slopes...
Pack up your gear and head to
Hogadon Ski Area (307.235.8499)
for some winter adventure in Casper!
Whether you’re looking to cruise
downhill on skis or catch some air
with your board, Hogadon offers 600
vertical feet of terrain for riders of all
disciplines.
Located just ten minutes from town
on Casper Mountain, Hogadon
offers something for skiers and
snowboarders at every experience
level. There are bunny slopes for
the beginners, and steeper hills —
including black diamond trails — for
skiers with more nerve. There’s
even a terrain park for the most
18 |
adventurous of riders. Best of all,
short lift lines mean more skiing and
less waiting!
If you’re new to winter sports and
you’re not sure which is right for you,
here are a few things to consider:
When alpine skiing, you’ll use your
poles to keep yourself in an upright
position.
Snowboarding,
while
easier on your knees, can put more
stress on your ankles. In either case,
your goal is to get from the top of the
run to the bottom, using all the grace,
speed, and balance you can muster.
If neither of these options sounds
appealing, you may find nordic
skiing to be a better fit. Nordic skiing
is more akin to hiking, and the Casper
Nordic Center (307.235.4772) with
its 42 kilometers of groomed trails
is a great place to glide. Located on
Casper Mountain, the Nordic Center
offers cross-country skiing day and
night with overhead lights illuminating
a popular section of trail until 10 PM
most nights. There are trail levels for
all abilities, so grab your poles and
go!
Early snow and a full range of terrain
are just two of the reasons the Nordic
Center is a popular facility. In addition
to the groomed track, there are nearly
50 kilometers of backcountry and
snowshoe trails within the park itself.
And, when you ski Casper, you’ll be
in good company! During the Salt
Lake City Olympics, two Olympic
teams trained daily in Casper. But
don’t let that intimidate you — most
folks ski strictly for fun; that’s what it’s
all about!
Lift ticket options for Hogadon
include individual, group and season
passes. Passes to ski the nordic trails

ESCAPE TO
When you’ve got a
winter wonderland
like Casper Mountain
located just minutes
from town . . .
Skimming over the trails at 35 mph
is a thrilling way to explore it. Just
ask Adventure Guide Don Higbee,
owner of Karst Motor Sports
(307.237.7680). “My favorite thing
about the mountain is being able to
go up there with the family and having
it in such close proximity to Casper.”
A lifelong enthusiast of snowmobiling
and ATVing, Higbee speaks from
experience. He and his family just
recently moved here, but “we’ve
been visiting Wyoming for 15 years.
We’re really glad to be in town.”
Snowmobiling is one of the most
popular winter sports in Wyoming’s
Adventure Capital.

WINTER
MOTORSPORT MOUNTAIN
Beartrap Meadow, the trailhead for
snowmobiling on Casper Mountain.
Located straight up Casper Mountain
Road and just minutes from downtown,
its parking lot is the perfect place to
leave your trailer and head out on
the groomed trails. From there, you
can follow well-defined tracks over to
Muddy Mountain and drop into some
of the larger, deeper powder snow
known for great backcountry riding.
Easy access and well-groomed trails
are just a few of the area’s highlights,
according to Higbee. “It’s a good
area for the beginning and mid-range
type of snowmobiler to come and
enjoy some of Wyoming’s scenery,”
he says. “What attracts the beginning
snowmobiler to Casper Mountain
is the detail that the county uses
on plowing the different roads, and
making sure that Beartrap Meadow
is easily accessible. My daughter
is just learning how to ride, and we
allow her to ride up there.” Higbee
notes, however, that the mountain
features a variety of different terrain,
offering something for all levels of
snowmobilers.
As with any other sport, safety is a
key consideration when you head out
into the mountains. Higbee suggests
taking spare belts and spark plugs —
anything you might need to maintain
your machine. He also recommends
bringing along some food and water
or Gatorade, “because you never
know when a storm is going to blow in.
You always want to make sure you’re
prepared when you’re out riding.”
As for the gear you’ll need? There
are a couple of local shops that
can outfit you in grand style. First,
you’ll need to get a season permit,
which is available for $25 from
Natrona County (307.235.9370).
Then, check out Higbee’s shop for
a full range of machines, clothing
and helmets. You will also find
snowmobiles and accessories for sale
at Casper Mountain Motorsports
(307.266.4930) and Just For Kicks
(307.265.0228).
While snowmobiling is a favorite
pastime for Higbee and his family,
Higbee believes “what makes Casper
so attractive is the variety of outdoor
activities that are available to
