I’ve decided to focus on safety this year, so for this article, I want to talk about group riding. We all have different riding styles, most likely a combination of group and single riding. We have people in our group who have done an Iron Butt alone, and some who can’t wait to ride with a group so we can do Mr. Magoo. Each style has benefits and drawbacks. Riding in a group, if you have any medical or mechanical problem, you have help. You have someone to eat with when you reach your destination. In a group, you have more visibility (usually) for other drivers. Riding singly, you still have CB or cell phone if you have problems. You can always eat alone, or stop whenever you want. You can maintain your own pace. You can ride with bright colors to keep yourself visible. I know that Jim and I will occasionally jump on the bike, take our favorite road to Blair and get lunch, but we are just as happy to meet at one of the meeting locations, talk with friends, ride as a group to dinner, talk some more, and ride part of the way back with the group (living so far north, we often are the last of the original group). Group riding needs to take into account other people. What their comfort level is, what their gas tank size is, how frequently they need to eat (I’m talking about you, Dan). It can take time to learn the dynamics of the group you ride with. The more you ride and talk to people, the more tips you may learn, which can make you a better motorcyclist. It may be that group riding on a short distance is not your thing, but long distance group riding is, or vice versa. Either style, each of us should be responsible for our own ride. Whatever your riding style, be sure to let someone know your plans. Where you’re going (although sometimes an alternate route will need to be explored, otherwise known as getting lost), approximate time you expect to be back or arrive at your destination, emergency contact and health insurance information readily available on your person or bike. Whether riding in a group or alone, a few precautions beforehand can be a lifesaver. As chapter directors, we would of course like to have more group rides. As always, please let me or Julie Sullivan know if you want to get the word out about ride. She has done an excellent job with our Facebook page and ride alerts. Spring is coming (except on the weekends it seems) and it’s time to ride. Ride safe! Heartland Wings May 2015 Page 3 Meeting Minutes GWTA Chapter A April 1, 2015 The meeting was called to order by Chapter Director Karen Durand. There were 16+ members present. March meeting minutes were included in the April newsletter. A motion to accept the meeting minutes as published was made, seconded and passed. The hand written (and largely illegible) Treasurer’s Report was presented by Mike Brush. We still have money! A motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the report. Old Business Karen has raffle tickets and is handling the tickets for the state. May 6th Safety Expo o The subcommittee (Mike & Carol, Joyce, Jim & Karen, and Mark) had a meeting before the monthly meeting – which spilled over into the monthly meeting. After we selected our date we were told by the crack library IT staff that for a May 6th date, we would have had to provide the information to them to get it on their web site earlier. This led to an animated discussion as to what is our goal for this expo (educate non-bikers or recruit new GWTA members. We decided to see if we could have a safety related table or display at one of the Dillon Brother’s events with recruitment as a goal and forget the library expo idea. We discussed the State meeting which was held at Dillon’s on Saturday, March 28th. Anyone can attend. I believe that Karen, Joyce and Debbie attended from Chapter A. o Karen mentioned that communication problems were discussed during the meeting (a recurring theme in any organization) with the intent to communicate more effectively. KAREN DOES A GREAT JOB OF COMMUNICATING AND WE ALL APPRECIATE HER. o We also discussed an issue related to the TA Way rules and family of the year qualifications. Mike and Carol will seek to eliminate the confusion around this issue. The Iowa Spring Rendezvous will be held April 25th in Elk Horn, IA. The theme is Hawaiian Luau. Joyce asked for support to help her granddaughter attend Camp Hotshots. This is a 3 day event and they know how to care for children with juvenile diabetes and assure them a good time. The cost of the camp is $200. A motion was made, seconded and passed for our Chapter to give Joyce a $50 check to help offset the costs of the camp. In addition many members donated their own money. Tell Addison to have a great time Joyce! Karen closed the meeting. We held a 50/50 drawing which Jim won. Group then went to Dairy Queen. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Heartland Wings May 2015 Page 4 Announcements Celebrations Birthdays 5-4 Greg Bumpus 5-16 Michael Sullivan 5-23 Marv Knapp 5-26 Addison Doyle Spring has Sprung New Bikes are Popping Up Like Flowers Mike’s new 2015 HD Electra Glide Ultra Low Terry and Evelyn’s 40th Anniversary Edition GL1800 with California Side Car Trike Kit Terry, Tom and Marv Check it out Heartland Wings May 2015 Evelyn is Ready to Ride! If your toes need wiggle room, and you wear the face of doom, Pet the cat. When your faith is wearing thin, and all you see's the shape you're in, Pet the cat. If the clock says it's only noon, but you wish the day over soon, Pet the cat. When you feel you're too far down, just pretend that you're a Clown, Pet the cat. If your skills seem fading fast, and you want the day to last, Pet the cat. When trouble comes along your way, just fob it off to another day, Pet the cat. If your smile is upside down, and your forehead wears a frown, Pet the cat. When a teardrop fills your eye, just give your troubles the ol' goodbye, Pet the cat. If a rain cloud rains on you, find a shelter with a view, Pet the cat. When things go wrong with well-made plans, just listen to some country bands, Pet the cat. You will find the day much brighter, if you only take life lighter, Pet the cat. If you're feeling sad and lonely, 'cause she said you're not her only, Pet the cat. All your troubles can fade away, with just one thing done each day, PET THE CAT. 2-27-13 rev 3-10-14 Heartland Wings May 2015 Page 12 Member Content “Rider’s 2015 National Motorcycle Touring Events Calendar”, Bill Stermer March 19, 2015 Americade, the East’s largest touring rally, takes place in beautiful Lake George, New York, June 1-6.
