That word — pet — conveys a world of meaning to us, when used in reference to Mocha, so deep and complex a relationship does she enjoy with us. Born August 4, 2011, the fact that I remember the date while conveniently forgetting many human birthdays indicates her status. When we decided to get a puppy, we knew little of poodles but for their famous non-shedding coats. We set off to educate ourselves, and liked what we read. Next thing I knew, Mocha was ours. Or perhaps I should say, we were hers. An elegant, jet-black creature, she melted hearts as a pup, and has grown into an athletic and joyous companion who is integral to our household in a way we could never have imagined. At a somewhat dainty 40 lbs., Mocha displays the usual standard poodle traits in spades. She: • retrieves marvellously • sniffs and tracks as we walk, and often tries to “herd” other creatures • demonstrates agility that puts most of her doggy friends to shame, including a love of bounding through my daughter’s hula hoop • smells delectably like your grandfather’s wet wool sweater when she’s damp She became the sixth in our household, along with two adults, two teenagers, and an elderly grandmother. Apparently, this was perfect. Mocha thrives in our busy, active home. She does not just enjoy company and action, but, as we quickly came to understand, needs it. Her intelligence and high energy demand physical and mental challenge, loving attention and human interaction in large daily doses. We give that to Mocha, each in our different way. And she meets us as individuals, adjusting her behaviour as required for young, old, playful or authoritative. With my son, she jousts and play-fights, ferocious growls rumbling deep. He takes vast liberties with her, even burying his head in her food dish. This she accepts with calm grace. My daughter cradles her like a babe-in-arms, brushes her top-knot into a pony-tail, and gently transforms tail into handle. This sometimes induces low moans of complaint, then, again, resigned grace. As my mother shuffles about, a gentle poke of the nose (pat me!) is the usual gesture. With me or my husband, “joined at the hip” comes to mind as a good descriptor. If Mocha ever turned her lip up at any of us in earnest, we’d drop dead from shock. Due to her vocabulary, we often joke that we must watch what we say around her. It’s handy though; she can find a lost collar, fetch her leash at walk-time, or seek out whomever I ask her to find, recognizing not just usual names, but nicknames too (“Where is that boy? Find the boy!”). Knowing names of toys and a long list of commands and tricks has prepared her for a life in the circus, which we believe she’d embrace with gusto given the chance. THE POODLE SCENE POODLE CLUB OF CANADA WINTER 2015 Continued: “Mocha the Magnificent” When I observed Mocha the pup watching my hands intently as I opened doors, and then witnessed her opening our garden door with her paw, I knew we were either in trouble, or very lucky. As it turns out, I think it’s luck. We don’t have to get up off the couch very often. To her friends, she is an open book. With strangers, she is somewhat contrarily stand-offish, and enemies easily quail her with overt aggression, of either dog or human variety. But to animals she knows, her affection fills a deep well. Once Mocha trusts you, she is yours. We understood this clearly one day, as Mocha greeted someone who walked into the yard to join a raucous birthday party in action. She quickly realized this was the same person who’d walked her every day a year earlier during a busy period in our lives. Silence fell on the group as Mocha paid tribute to her long-lost friend, almost sobbing as she poured out her heart, running circles of delight around his startled, and humbled, form. It may be trite for a dog-owner to brag about their dog, akin to a parent bragging about a child’s achievements. Love is blind, and we love Mocha. Yet, Mocha’s beautiful disposition, obvious joy at life, and stylish demeanour are commented upon wherever we go. She enters…no — bounds — into the park, her heart on her sleeve, and no passer-by can but help smile. A poodle to the last inch, Mocha habitually leaps mud patches and puddles while her friends slosh through; she literally tip-toes in pursuit of the ever-elusive squirrel; she is a dancing gazelle at play with other dogs who can’t touch her, so high does she fly. In the end, though, I can call her back, and she arrows for me at full speed, ears flapping, glinting teeth and almond eyes shining, while our companions chuckle delightedly at her vim. Chuckle, and then back up, because she will run at top-speed every time, stopping on a dime before me, her eyes laughing at their doubt. There is an invisible string between me and my dog, and so she can never go too far, because it’s tied firmly around both our hearts. And that, that is what happens with a real pet. She specializes in whimsical animal portraits, specifically poodles, that display many different themes. She has done a variety of work for individuals and businesses alike. Her work is bright and colourful and out of the ordinary. She prefers to use dogs and horses as a vessel by which a story is told. From time to time she will venture out of her comfort zone and draw a portrait that is closer to realistic. When this happens, she usually will add a vibrant display of flowers, which may or may not follow the rules of real flowers. Amber does have an under graduate degree in liberal arts with a concentration in art. She loves all forms of art and has dabbled in just about all of them. At this time she has embraced watercolours and ink drawings. She is fond of anything unique and is always in search of her next inspiration. Her poodle images are her passion. In her opinion poodles are a magical breed enticing her imagination. THANK YOU to Amber for sharing her wonderful images and artistic process with our audience. Martin My love of poodles actually began in 1963. I was in the third grade. A young naval officer stationed out of New Port News, Virginia was brought to the attention of my parents. They were looking for a dog that would be good with children. The naval officer was being posted to Viet Nam. He needed a permanent home for his dog. She was a standard poodle who worshiped my dad. She loved us and was our playmate for the remainder of her life. Her AKC name was Pride of Waldebrooke but we, like her previous owners, called her Poodie Not long after Poodie came to live with us there was a huge forest fire that came right up to the edge of our house. Mom and our neighbor used garden hoses to keep the embers from igniting our roof. Poodie’s hunter instinct kicked in. She stayed near mom while they were fighting the fire, however, Poodie figured out quickly that if she watched the edge of the fire line that snakes and turtles would run toward her. She was in Hunting Poodle Heaven. That night were all snuggled in our Plymouth station wagon, where our parents made us sleep in case we had to suddenly evacuate. Every once in a while Poodie would show up with her latest capture. Then run off to find another. Finally, dad came out and called her because it was getting dark and there was no telling if the fire would burn through the power lines leaving us in the dark. All he had to do was clap his hands twice and she came right to him. My love and appreciation of poodles has been so great through the years, that not only have there been one of every size in our family at one time or another, but I also convinced several of my art student families to consider them as both companions and pets. One family even acquired one for every member of their family. I love all animals and I admit that even as a poodle owing child, I was totally horse crazy, too. When I didn’t have access to horses, yes, you guessed it poodles filled in nicely. I started out my art career by drawing horses. My pet poodle was often featured in the drawings. In 1975 my Toy poodle came to college with me and spent many hours in my studio while I painted. My last poodle was a 4.5 lb 3 year foster who just was able to return to his family in November of 2014. As an artist who is pushing 60 with mobility issues and who loves and understands the unique qualities of Poodles, I hope to acquire a service dog in the spring. Yes, I want a standard poodle, of course. THANK YOU to Linda for sharing her wonderful images and artistic process with our audience. It may have started with “Pink Princess”, a stuffed white toy with pink ears that she received as a 3rd birthday present. When our dog Zane died, we decided to break the long string of Labradors and mutts that have always graced our lives and buy a poodle. It wasn’t only Eleanor’s request that swayed us to make the leap. The idea of no shedding was definitely appealing! We hadn’t bird hunted in years, but thought we might start again and liked the little known hunting heritage that poodles have. And after getting past the “frou frou” reputation, we found that poodles are intelligent, loving, amazing dogs. Our biggest concern when searching for a puppy was finding a breeder interested in raising the best poodles possible. We knew from searching out Labradors through the years that genetics were paramount and “puppy mills” were bad for the breed and a potential liability long term. We looked all over the eastern part of North America at a number of different breeders and finally settled on a breeder in the Montreal area as our puppy provider. Montreal made a lot of sense for us, as it is a major world-class city close to our home in Crown Point, NY. It was easy to drive up and meet with the breeder and meet some of the older siblings of our future family friend. The economics were staggering to us at first. The going rate for an amazing French Canadian Poodle was 4 times what we’d paid for our last Lab a decade before and 2-3 times the cost of a puppy mill poodle. But being local and not having to drive or fly to meet the breeder and offspring provided substantial savings. The most important consideration was the long-term health of our adopted friend and the health tests performed by the breeder were second to none. Avoiding long-term vet bills or worse, losing your best friend, are worth paying extra up front. Within 2 minutes of arriving to meet with her and seeing the litter of puppies, all doubts were dispelled about the quality of the animals we were looking in to. Mango, an older “sister” to the little ones, hopped a 4’ barricade sideways to land amongst the pups to check on them. She was loving, sweet and amazingly athletic. I was wowed and smitten by this future champion instantly. Our puppy Splash has the exact same attributes and is absolutely the best dog in the world for our family. Splash had a little help, as the breeder has a policy of placing dogs with owners and not letting potential customers select their pup. So we got a dog ready for an active family and country lifestyle. Splash is a country poodle. At times he looks like a wooly Mammoth covered in burrs and mud. Right now he is sleeping with his head on my legs in bed as I type this. He has all of the faults of good dogs. He is prone to cat chasing – he comes from a long line of them. Splash is a convicted chicken killer – feathers in his muzzle. He would chase cars all day and probably catch them except for the invisible fence and their highpower max-dog collar. He has trained the UPS and Fed-Ex drivers to bring cookies on their almost daily deliveries to our home office. He spends a majority of his time outside in all types of weather – except when the chickens and Guinea Fowl are ranging around the yard. Splash is fast, athletic, loving beyond belief and still a lap dog! He loves the children and will do almost anything for them. Folks in town have learned what a real poodle is like. I think a lot of people have the impression that they are delicate, frilly show dogs. Far from the truth! But changing their appearance with a brushing or grooming is tremendous fun! We will have cars slow down and check out Splash’s new doo. THE POODLE SCENE POODLE CLUB OF CANADA WINTER 2015 Continued: Why a Poodle? - Especially A “Superior Quality” Poodle As A Family Dog Story and photos by Larry Harmon and Cathy Muller Sometimes I think the breeder would shudder when Splash is matted, muddy and shaggy – but he is a country poodle. We hope to bring him up soon for a visit. You can be sure we will fix him up first because we will be going back to the well for a companion poodle for Splash at some point once our rescued Bernese passes. She is 9 and healthy, so we are fortunate. For us it boiled down to genetics, temperament and long-term health as criteria for our selection. What we got is a world-class, amazing, loving, family companion. And looking at everything, a very big bargain. THE POODLE SCENE POODLE CLUB OF CANADA WINTER 2015 OF NOTE ATTENTION STANDARD POODLE BREEDERS! You need to know about the availability of a new test to determine genetic diversity available for only 100$ from UC Davis and Dr Perderson’s lab.. This study has been supported by many PCC members and the Editor strongly encourages all of you to use this test to help you determine who to use your future breeding program. Another part of the genetic puzzle solved!. http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/dog/GeneticDiversityInStandardPoodles.php Here is a wonderful slide show by Nathalie Green Tessier who has kindly agreed to share publicly: explaining the reasoning behind the testing, and how it works. http://poodlesdegrenier.com/geneticspresentation Looking for a stud dog? Submitted by Vivienne Swarbreck Meet "Mocha" Adelheid's Coffeebean. He is my first Poodle (definitely not my last) a blue Miniature, currently 2 years old. Lots of first with Mocha: conformation (including poodle grooming), agility and scent detection. We also continued some existing disciplines that I have mastered with my other dogs: obedience, rally and free style. We are having lots of fun learning and working all these disciplines, there is just not enough time in a day! Our goal is to go further in obedience then I did with my other dogs. Mocha is energetic, smart (of course) and always ready to do more. He is just awesome and I enjoy every bit of the journey with my little companion. Many years of fun ahead of me, this is just the start!
