TheMSctrackinAerodynamicsandWind
Energycombinesfundamentalandapplied
researchdisciplinesofaerospaceandwindpowersystems,focusingonthedevelopment
ofnewanalysistechniquesandtheir
applicationindesign.Itisaimedatthosewho
wishtoacquireexperiencewithboth
experimentalandnumericalmethodsaswell
asdesignproceduresandoptimisation
techniques.

Aerodynamicsprofile:The
aerodynamicsprofilecoversthe
fundamentalsofmathematics,flow
physics,andflowanalysismethods.Its
coursesincludePartialDifferential
Equations,Gasdynamics,Aircraft
Aerodynamics,ComputationalFluid
Dynamics,ExperimentalSimulationsand
FlowMeasurementTechniques.After
successfulcompletionoftheprofile
programmeyouwill:

viscousandcompressibleflows,
andoftheinfluenceofflow
phenomenaonexternalflow
aerodynamics
Befamiliarwiththedesignofwind
tunnelexperiments,andhave
experiencewithmodern

velocimetry.

computationalmethodsforboth
incompressibleandcompressible
flows,aswellasadvancedconcepts

ForgraduateswithaspecialtyinWind
Energy,therecentrapidexpansioninthe
numberandsizeofwindturbinesoffers
ampleopportunitiesinthewidediversity
offieldsthatmakeupthewindenergy
industry,includingwindturbine
manufacturingandengineering,wind
farmdevelopment,consultancy,financial
services,andresearchandacademia.
TheAerodynamicsgroupisengagedin
bothfundamentalandappliedresearch
relatedtotheunderstandingandcontrol
ofaerodynamicflows.
Thegroup’sstrengthslieinthe
developmentofnewexperimentaland
computationaltechniquesandthe
investigationofcomplexflow
phenomena.

Concerningexperimentaltechniques,the
aerodynamicsgroupisattheforefrontof
thedevelopmentofparticleimage
velocimetry(PIV)includingitsapplication
tobothunsteadyandhigh-speedflows.
Thisincludesthedevelopmentof
methodstoderiveforcesfromPIVdata,
andwhichoptimallycombine
experimentalresultswithnumericalflow
simulations.Thegroupisalsoveryactive
inthedevelopmentofnewmethodsfor
numericalflowsimulation.Thisincludes
methodswhichexactlypreserveflow
kineticenergyandhelicity,optimal
methodsforthelarge-eddysimulationof
turbulentflowsandefficienttechniques
forfluid-structuresimulations.Inaddition,
methodsforpropagatinginput
uncertaintyarebeingadvanced,along
withBayesiantechniquesforturbulence
modelselectionandcalibration.Finally,
theaerodynamicsgroupisengagedin
thecharacterisationofseveralcomplex
fluidphenomenaforapplicationtoflow
control.Examplesincludetheeffectof
micro-rampsonshock-boundarylayer
interactions,soundproductioninduced
bytrailing-edgeturbulenceinteractions
andtheeffectsoflow-frequencyand
nano-pulseplasmaactuatorson
boundary-layertransition.MScprojects
canbecarriedoutinallthesedisciplines
bothintheAerodynamicsLabaswellas
incollaborationwithindustry.
From2005to2007Ifollowedthe
AerodynamicsMasterprogramme,
specialisinginComputationalFluid
Dynamics.AfteraninternshipinChile
workingonwindtunnellay-outdesigns,I
returnedtotheAerodynamicsLaboratory
inDelfttoperformmyMasterthesis
researchoncompressibletwo-fluidflow
modeling.Thiswasperformedin
collaborationwiththeCenterof
MathematicsandComputerScience(CWI)
inAmsterdam.Whatattractedmemostto
theAerodynamicsMasterwasthe
combinationofbothappliedand
fundamentaltopicsinitscourse
programme,andthemixtureofnumerical
andexperimentalexpertiseatthe
AerodynamicsLaboratory.Inmyopinion
theAerodynamicsLaboratoryisaunique
locationwhichhasallowedmetodeepenas
wellasbroadenmyknowledgeJasper
Kreeftoffluiddynamics.Afterhaving
workedforayearattheNationalAerospace
LaboratoryinAmsterdam,Ireturnedtothe
AerodynamicsLaboratorytostartmyPhD
researchonstructure-preserving(mimetic)
numericaltechniquesfor,butnotlimited
to,fluiddynamics.
Now,inmycurrentroleasfluidflow
researcheratShellR&D,Iaminvolvedin
thecomputationalmodellingofmultiphase
flowsinproductionfacilities,turbulent
reactingflowsinreactorsandfluidstructureinteractionsinoffshoreplatforms.
Ifindtheknowledgeoffluiddynamics,
fluidstructureinteractionsandnumerical
analysisIobtainedduringmyyearsatthe
AerodynamicsLaboratoryisstillofgreat
valueandusedonadailybasis.
RotorAerodynamics
Thegrouphasauniquewindtunnelto
testmodelrotors:theOpenJetFacility
(OJF).Furthermore,thegroupusesthe
lowspeedlowturbulencetunnel(LSLT)
whichisperfectforthedesignofairfoils
forwindturbineapplication.Wemake
extensiveuseofadvancedexperimental
techniquessuchaslasersheetstereo
PIVandCTAhotwireanemometry.We
haveourownrotoraerodynamicdesign
andanalysistoolsandusecommercial
CFDpackages.Notsurprisingly,the
researchisoftenacombinationof
experimentsandanalysis.
WindTurbineDesign
Sinceoffshorewindpoweristhemost
demandingapplication,thedevelopment
ofdesignmethodologiesisfocusingon
offshorewindpowerstations.Twodesign
aspectsprevailinthisresearch:tokeep
theloadsontheoffshorewindturbines
aslowaspossible,andtoaimfora
maximumavailabilityofthewindpower
stationwithlowmaintenance
requirements.
Otherresearchareasarethe
developmentofareliablekitepower
system-stateestimatorandthe
developmentofafast,adaptivecontroller
fortheground-station.TheWindEnergy
researchgroupcollaborateswith,among
others,ECN,Ecofys,Vestas,Siemens
andMakaniPower.
FortheAerodynamicsandWindEnergy
trackastrongbackgroundin
mathematicsandfluidmechanicsis
required.Abasicknowledgeofnumerical
methods,computerprogramming,
statisticalmethodsandexperimental
methodsisrecommended.Makesure
thatyouprovideevidenceoftheseskills
inyourapplication.

Thedesignofakitepowersystemis
highlyconnectedtoitsdynamic
behaviour.Importantaspectsare
operationaloptimisationandeconomic
feasibility.In2012thekite-powergroup
demonstratedthefullyautomated
operationofakitepowersystem.The
