CommunityHeartBeat JULY 2015 FOUNDATION FOR THAYER COUNTY HEALTH SERVICES HOLDS 28TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT www.ThayerCountyHealth.com FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT RESULTS RELAY FOR LIFE LUMINARIAS MEET OUR IMMUNIZATION TEAM from the CEO Michael Burcham, Sr., MBA, RRT Office: 402.768.4614 Email: [email protected] Thanks to a gift of $6.9 million from Glenn Korff’s estate to the Foundation for Thayer County Health Services, a new Rehab and Wellness Center will be built off the north side of the hospital. Construction on the Rehab and Wellness Center will begin in August 2015 and will lead into a hospital renovation project. For the past year, the hospital board and administration have been working on a hospital renovation plan. This project is necessary to update areas of the hospital original to when it was built in 1968. The kitchen/cafeteria no longer meets state requirements and must be updated. The project will also update various mechanical and electrical systems, some of which are original to the hospital. The cost for these two key components of the project total almost $5 million. When looking at a renovation project, it was important for us to also look at other areas of the hospital to see if patient care could be improved. This led to identifying a need to separate the emergency room, specialty clinic and Labor & Delivery. Currently they are collocated within a shared space in the hospital and separating them would: • Give the Specialty Clinic more space to ac- Our SERVICES PATIENT SERVICES Acute Care Behavioral Health Cardiology Clinic Cardiac Rehab Cataract Surgery Childbirth Classes Diabetes Education Dietary Counseling Ear-Nose-Throat Foot Clinic Good Beginnings Home Health Immunization Clinic Labor and Delivery Laboratory Newborn Care OB-GYN Observation Care Obstetrics Occupational Therapy Ophthalmology Orthopedic Physical Therapy Podiatry Pulmonary Rehab Speech Therapy Surgery Swing Bed Urology Clinic Vascular Clinic Wellness Program Wound Clinic 2 prove your overall health. Having quality healthcare services in Thayer County not only benefits patients, but it has a huge impact on the local economy. A modern hospital is one of the key factors people consider when deciding where to live and raise a family. The new rehab and wellness center will be a great opportunity for county residents to improve or maintain their quality of life through education and fitness. TCHS is grateful to Glenn Korff and is excited about this project. If you would like to learn more about the project, we invite you to attend the next public presentation on July 6th at 7:00 pm in the hospital main lobby, 120 Park Avenue in Hebron. Hosting the meeting at the hospital will give you an opportunity to tour the facility and see firsthand the need for the project. This presentation and others being planned throughout Thayer County are a great opportunity to learn about this project and the future of healthcare in Thayer County. It will also be a chance for you to ask questions regarding the project. The hospital board and I look forward to meeting with you and answering your questions. ~ Mike Burcham TCHS TEAM GEARS UP FOR RELAY FOR LIFE S ince 2002, TCHS has been a part of Thayer County’s Relay For Life. This year’s event will be held on Friday, July 24 at the Thayer Central High School track in Hebron. TCHS will be sponsoring the Survivor Meal and have waters for the evening. This year employees are using their Denim Day funds to sponsor inflatables. In addition, employees have formed a team called the TCHS HOPEfuls. The group will offer Luminaria for $10 in order to raise funds. Luminaria are decorated paper bags that are illuminated in memory or honor of a friend or loved one affected by cancer. TCHS members will have a booth during the Freedom Fun Run on Saturday, July 4 for those wanting to dedicate a luminaria. To dedicate a luminaria, donate, or find out more information, please contact team member Amber Lubben at 402-768-4629 or Thayer County Relay For Life contact Virginia Brase at 402-364-2240. get to know our DEPARTMENTS Immunization Department DIAGNOSTIC Bone Densitometry CT Scan Doppler Echo Mammography MRI Nuclear Medicine Pet Scan Pulmonary Function Test Sleep Study Stress Testing Ultra Sound commodate two or more visiting physicians • Space to add a chemotherapy room and a second operating room. • Allow the emergency room to be closer to the nurse’s station. This would improve patient care and staff efficiency. • Provide private birthing suites for new Mom’s and their families. The total cost for the hospital renovation and expansion project is $14.8 million. With the gift from Mr. Korff’s estate, the remaining project cost is $7.9 million - with the majority of that cost being items that have to be updated. The remaining components of the project will improve and add more services for our patients. It is also important to remember that although TCHS is a county facility; this project will not require any new tax dollars to be imposed on the residents of Thayer County. The remaining project costs will be paid for by the Foundation’s capital campaign and through local bank financing. TCHS is committed to providing our patients with quality, local healthcare. This project continues that commitment and begins a new chapter in prevention. The new wellness center will feature a walking track, aerobics room, exercise equipment, weight room, and walking pool. The rehabilitation portion highlights include an enlarged physical therapy/occupational therapy gym, additional therapy equipment and an aqua therapy pool. Prior to the gift from the Korff estate, TCHS had been working on plans to update the original (1968) kitchen/cafeteria and mechanical systems, as they no longer meet state codes and requirements. Because of the creation of the rehab and wellness center, the cafeteria will be able to be moved to the southwest side of the building where the rehabilitation department is currently located. Moving the cafeteria here accomplishes several Sample view of the dining area in the new Cafeteria things. First, it will make the cafeteria more accessible and separate the general public from where our patients are receiving care.
