preface
MuNiMulA’s designs locate themselves at the intersection of
thinking and making, where creativity sets off a strategically
generative process. Our collection of objects and furniture is
created through an exploration of the highly subjective notions
of beauty and need. Each piece is the result of a clear under-
standing of materials and industrial production combined with
hand finished execution. Traditional issues of function and use
are critically examined and injected with a level of freedom and
indeterminacy that engages the user and opens the possibility
of joy in the mundane. This also allows the designs to remain
relevant and vital over time, capable of being recycled from a
stool to a side table or from a desk to a dining table. A form of
adaptation and reuse that is more responsible and efficient than
planned obsolescence and disposable products. We are moving
from the recycling of material to the recycling of use.

The manufacturing process, from the extrusion of the aluminum through to final anodizing contributes
to the inherent elegance of MuNiMulA’s objects, and its design approach. All cutting, machining, welding,
and finishing is done by hand at our facility in southern Michigan. Our location has also allowed us to
establish strong partnerships with area suppliers for extruding, anodizing, and etching . We understand
the material memories and
traces of the process of making to be an
integral part of the beauty and value of our collection. Any consideration of technologies and techniques
to be applied in the design and manufacturing of our products is guided by these notions. Both the
industrial and the handmade qualities of each object display a critical essence that is heavily informed by
a sense of economy that evolves from the immediate relationship with the processes of manufacturing.
work reveals its own history.
An understanding of both the intrinsic virtues and limitations of materials is indispensable to
The result engages the senses as the
our designs. The manipulation of these materials becomes a means to explore, and ultimately reveal,
uses and functions. MuNiMulA’s primary material is
aluminum, a metal whose core material
comprises 1/12 of the earth’s crust. It is a material that is lightweight, durable, accepts a wide variety
of finishes, and is 85 to 90% recycled. Aluminum is created by chemically refining bauxite ore into
alumina, and then electrically separating this white powder into molten aluminum and carbon dioxide.
Recycling saves not only the material itself, but also the energy needed to produce it. MuNiMulA’s
designs further the notion of conservation by understanding the importance of time and place in the
life of our products. They remain open and encourage adaptation of use,
thus embracing
a state of becoming, prolonging its useful life and relevance. Without relinquishing
authorship or responsibility for the form, time and chance are fundamental concepts for MuNiMulA’s
notions for design, endorsing customization and change over time by addition or subtraction. We
believe that noble materials, clear details, and adaptability in space, present a responsible alternative
to planned obsolescence.

At the intersection of MuNiMulA’s design activity,
thinking is coincident with
making. As a strategy thinking is by necessity creative and critical, while making is generative and
productive. Where the two intersect experience and experimentation have the capacity to set forces into
play, to provide us with the opportunity to be propositional in new ways. This is our preferred place to
inhabit, a place where design, aesthetics, and industrial production become propositional. It is here where
we find and formulate the appropriate questions that carry us beyond the known and the preconceived.
MuNiMulA’s designs depart from basic questions of use. The daily tasks that require a chair, a table, or
a light are emphasized by designs that reconsider them with the hope to encourage an inspirational
and critical relationship to these objects by the user. This relationship is participatory as the designs are
purposefully instilled with a level of indeterminacy that
engages the user in a collaborative process of establishing color, configuration, and function.
