The staff were really proud of the children giving their best at all times. Next week I will be on camp with room 17 so Mrs. Dent will be holding the fort. We are raising the profile of te reo at our full school assembly. You will have been introduced to mihi and karakia. We are intending to have a ‘create your own mihi’ session for parents so you can understand what the mihi is about and perhaps even surprise your own child with a recitation at home! If you would be interested please email [email protected] - Keeping up with the kids! A sincere thanks to the PTA and the staff for organising the fitnessathon. So far the total raised is $8,500 however we are waiting on some late arrivals so we will let you know the final total close to the end of the term. Congratulations to the winners. A sincere thanks to the Hoon Hay School mum’s and dad’s for supporting this fundraiser. It was awesome! This effort will just about purchase another set of classroom furniture. The drains have been blasted and cleaned so we are hoping this will alleviate the flooding issues. We will be working with OPUS to investigate the drainage of the field and then find a solution. This won’t happen quickly but it is a start. In the next few weeks you will notice the lumps and bumps in and around the place being corrected. New carpet will be in rooms 13 and 14 and finally a protective entrance will be built outside room 18 to prevent the winds and rains from having direct access. So it is all go! The sad news for us is that Mr Ron Thin, our caretaker, is leaving us at the end of the term to move to Australia to be closer to his children and grandchildren. This is a huge loss to us as he is a fabulous person. Ron has worked here for 9 years and has become part of the furniture joining in and helping out where ever he can. We will miss him! In the meantime our number one helper, Dave Gillett, will fill the breach until we appoint. Our thoughts are with Michelle Meaclem and her family, with the passing of Michelle’s mother this week. Have a fabulous weekend. Go the Allblacks! Topics covered in the quiz included; proof reading, dictionary skills, spelling, origins of words, root words, and scrambled words. While neither of our teams placed, we did score full points in some rounds, and enjoyed the fun atmosphere. Sports News! Spotlight on Leadership ! Here are Summer D and Nadya J, two of our peer mediators. So what is a peer mediator? They are out in the playground at interval breaks, assisting children to solve their own problems. So what’s cool about being a peer mediator? You get to work with the little kids a lot and help them out, so they can have fun with their friends. Did you do any training? Yes, Mrs Hotton and Mrs Young trained us over 7 sessions. Sounds like they’re professionals to me! An interview with Alex B Librarian Why did you apply to be librarian? I applied because I wanted to help kids around the school and in the library. Who trained you? Mrs Ahn and Miss Haig trained me. What do you do? Issue and return books, help kids choose books and read to kids a lot. It is like you are the leader in the library. What is the best thing about being a librarian? Seeing kids happy because it is horrible when you see them sad. ! 7! STAFF PROFILE ! Kia ora, my name is Anna Hotton and I have worked at Hoon Hay for the last 14 years. My current role is Reading Recovery and the Year 4-6 Enrichment programme. I am married to Glenn and we have 3 children, Connor(11), Abigail (9) and Blake(7). When I am not at school, I spend a lot of time being the taxi driver to the many sports my children participate in. As a family we enjoy the outdoors, camping and water sports in the summer, snow skiing in the winter. Something you may not know about me is I love to bake and cook. I try to attempt at least one new recipe a week. % % % Calendar Dates June% 23T25% 24% 25T27% 25% 26% % 27% 30% 30%–%2% July# 01 02 03 04 04% 21% !
