2U: Musikfest is heavier on tribute bands this year, with some
even at paid venues (Grateful Dead Tribute Dark Star Orchestra
and Simon and Garfunkle tribute A.J. Swearingen & Jonathan
Beedle). But if you’re not into paying to see copies of bands,
check out 2U, a respected U2 tribute act. At least it’s good music without paying U2’s all-too-real real ticket prices. 9 p.m.,
Volksplatz
Three Legged Fox: Delaware County indie-rock reggae jam
band Three Legged Fox had Musikfest’s “Main Street in a frenzy
last year,” says ArtsQuest Performing Arts Director Patrick Brogan. Little wonder. They add to the mix an organic roots-rock
element, and somehow are able to present the best of all the
genres. They’ve now been upgraded. 8 p.m., Liederplatz

there’s absolutely nothing funereal about
this central Pennsylvania band’s music. It’s
jammy, experimental nu-jazz with influences

Amped Up! Winners: For the first year,
no Lehigh Valley band was a winner in
Musikfest’s annual Battle of the Bands,
this year called Amped Up! It also was
the first year it was decided entirely
by online votes. Panic Years and The
Atomic Square, both Philadelphia indierockers, and The Hide and Seek Effect,
a piano pop-rockers from Morgantown,
W. Va., got the most votes among 10
finalists Musikfest chose. 5:30-9 p.m.,

Los Straitjackets: It seems these
masked Mexican avengers of surf-rock
are critics’ picks every year at Musikfest,
but if you’ve ever seen and heard them,
you understand why. With 16 years and
16 albums behind them, they’re a Musikfest tradition. 9 p.m., Volksplatz

She Said Sunday: Cover bands usually draw a resounding “meh.” But with
the growing popularity of “tribute”
bands, even at Musikfest, the difference between what they play and
what cover band play is minimal. And
She Said Sunday — whose repertoire
includes Billy Idol, Blink 182 and Pat
Benatar — won six Lehigh Valley Music
Awards last year. 5:30 p.m., Americaplatz
The Bank Street Band: A collection
of 13 students from the Easton School
of Rock, this classic rock group won
the 2009 Lehigh Valley Music Award
for Best Teenage Band, and kicked off
the awards show with an appropriately
loud and abrasive version of Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love”
that awards founder Ian Bruce said
“brought a tear to my eye.” 3 p.m.,

n PICK OF THE PLATZES
Start Making Sense (Talking
Heads Tribute): Two things about
this Bethlehem-based tribute band
make it worth seeing. First, Talking
Heads broke up in 1991, and it’s
unlikely you’ll ever be able to see
the real thing again. Two, Talking
Heads has great music. And oh
yeah, three, these guys do it well. 7
p.m., Americaplatz
The Two Man Gentlemen Band:
The New York-based vaudevillian
duo combines jazz, vintage rhythm
and blues and Tin Pan Alley with
sly humor. The relentlessly barnstorming group got a boost last
summer opening some dates for
the Bob Dylan-Willie Nelson-John
Mellencamp tour. 2:30 p.m. Main
Street, 5:30 p.m., Liederplatz
Mishal Moore: Equally accomplished at performing airy, operatic
music and horn-enhanced rhythm
and blues, the South Florida-based
Moore bares her soul on both,
adding her lyrical flair on intimate
topics such as love and life. 8 p.m.,

The Commander Cody Band: At most
festivals, Commander Cody’s career of four
Top 100 songs, 20 albums and the Top 10
hit “Hot Rod Lincoln” in 1972 would still get
him paid-stage status. So enjoy its mix of
country-rock, rockabilly and boogie-woogie
for free when you have the opportunity. 7
p.m., Americaplatz
Great White Caps: The Bethlehem-based
surf-rock group doesn’t take itself too
seriously, but does take its music seriously.

Chembo and Grupo Chaworo: In a career
that has seen him work with artists such as
Tito Puente and Celia Cruz, Wilson “Chembo” Corniel, a Grammy-nominated, conga
playing Latin percussionist, now leads his
own Latin Jazz quintet, Grupo Chaworo. It
lets him perform music that reflects his
two loves — Latin jazz and traditional salsa.
