Several Sundays ago on a rainy and cold
evening in October, a few of us at Concept
went to the awesome Ellington Jazz Club
in Northbridge to catch a few sets by the
Russell Holmes Trio. We left later on feeling
we had seen and heard something really
special, even those who were not
necessarily straight up jazz fans. Russell
comes from a musical pedigree, his father
was a well known local jazz guitarist and
Russell has since gone on to perform with
some very big names in the music industry,
appeared on many recordings, and has
been a very popular lecturer at WAAPA
since 1989.
A. Thanks Shane. We really love to bring people
to the music. Allowing the audience to get
familiar with the themes in the tunes means
they can come along for the ride when we really
get going. Good music is always good music
whether it’s Jazz or not.
Q. Mate, the trio sounds awesome. There was a
lot of great musicianship by all involved with
great soloing and interplay, but not at the
expense of the song, or the listener. I like the
modern approach of appealing to people from
all walks and knocking down genre stereotypes,
sort of like Herbie Hancock and Co. Is this
something you try for?
Q. You purchased a Nord Electro 3 from us
recently. It has great piano, old school electric

A. Mike Perkins and Karl Florrison are both
graduates of WAAPA and have taught there in
both Jazz and Contemporary courses. They are
amazing players! As a group we’ve been
together for over 2 years and we like to get
together and play most weeks, even when there
isn’t a gig.

Q. It also has good effects like the Lesley
emulator. Any particular features stand out for
you?
A. The Delay and reverb unit is really f lexible and
useful when setting up grooves and the grungy ,
dirty electric piano sounds take me back to those
times instantly. And especially for me, the grand
piano sounds are great on our gig at Amani down
in Leederville.
Q. Do you run the Nord thru any DI’s into the
desk, or is it just straight?
A. Normally it’s just straight in, but at the
Ellington recently we DI’ed (no we didn’t really
die!) and that also worked a treat.

Q. What is coming up for yourself and the
trio mate and where can people see you
guys around town.
A. We have a regular gig at Amani
Winebar in Leederville early each
Thursday night, and during December will
also be at Clancys City Beach every Friday
Night. Our XMAS gig at the Ellington on
the 19th December will feature amazing
guitarist Harry Winton and Carl Mackey
on sax and we’ll playing some of the
music of Aaron Parkes with those guys.
I’m looking forward to that! Lastly we just
keep writing and will head east for a trip
next year and record all our new stuff.
And of course, keep having as much fun
as we can!

Tony Bourke is a familiar face around
Perth and has been a gigging and
touring muso across the country, and
also a session player of renown in
Perth for over 10 years. He has
currently landed the role of keyboards
for Eskimo Joe when they are on the
road and he recently came in to grab
a Nord Stage II 88.
Q. Well done mate on the Eskies gig.
Their new album features way more
keyboard and synth than any of their
previous albums including vintage, old
school analogue sounds. It was going to take
a special instrument to cover a lot of bases
on the road for this tour. Is this why you
went for the Nord?
A. Thanks. It's been an amazing few years
working with the esky lads come touring
times. This last LP, it's fair to say, they
weren't even sure how to emulate the mass
of vintage synths used to record it! There
we're many early 80s rigs used such as
Jupiter 4, Dave Smiths Prophet, Moog, and
more modern analogues like the Tetra4. This
is where the Nord Stage 2 enters the fold...
amazingly, all of these 80s sounds are
possible via the Nord's built-in synth, or
through the sample library, which is
excellent. We needed a Theremin line, with
quality portamento character, and found it
thru the Nord website... download, assign,
play... simple as that. No hours of sub-menu
scrolling, just bang... there it is. Also, the
ability to tweak any sound, in real time, with
real parameters/knobs/values, is priceless.
Most top-range gigging rigs, for years now,
lean towards "work-station" keyboards,
which is fine in a studio setting, with time up
your sleeve to master sub-menu within submenu... but it's not practical at all for live
playing and session work...where time is of
the essence. This is where Nord has hit it out
of the park. It's a true beast.
Q. What is the live set up for the keys
onstage as far as how you go into the desk?
Are you running stereo, using stereo Di
boxes and anything else of note?
A. For smaller gigs up to 100 – 300, I would
use a single DI for clear strong signal. For
larger shows like The Eskies, it’s 2 DI boxes
for stereo imaging, which allows cool effects
like panning, trem, delay and B3 Leslie to
come alive. Running mono can have
advantages because all of the highs and lows
of an 88 note instrument can drown out other
instruments.
Q. The Stage II 88 has got everything from
great piano, old school electric piano, organ
with drawbar function, synth, and some really
useful effects. Are there any of the features that
stand out for you?
A. Oh man, I could name a dozen at least, on
top of what you have already mentioned. The
Petrof Black Upright is the best upright sample
ever, the string resonance, B3 bite, the onboard
effects unit is so intuitive and easy to master. The
Mellotron ( listen to those tape heads go), the
complete new synth. The sample library, my old
2007 rig couldn’t do this – just jump online to
their website and you got it all.
Q. You must have a ball every time you go onstage
with the Eskies. Are there gigs so far which stand
out?
A. It is a ball. 2011 Splendour In The Grass for
atmosphere, The Forum in Melbourne, The Tivoli in
Brisbane is all class with timeless architecture.
Cairns several weeks ago – never was there more
sweat factor, ridiculous, but it made us play with
more f ire. Up North in WA has its fair share of
characters, and lack of footwear. I lost my shoes and
had to play in socks and f itted right in – a woman
even asked me if I was sponsored by Bonds.

GRAHAM’S RAVE
Well, yes. It’s Christmas... again. And if last
year is anything to go by, it will hardy be
over before we see Easter Eggs and Hot
Cross Buns appearing on the Super-Market
shelves early in January. Then of course we
will have Valentine’s Day... then Mothers
Day... and of course Fathers Day, and.... well,
eventually here will be again... Christmas!
What a strange consumerist world we seem
to have created.
In days gone by I would often express my
cynicism, at the fashion industry in
particular, for what I saw as the way they
unnecessarily changed their designs and
colours every single season in an attempt to
make us as their customers consumer feel
dissatisf ied with what we already have even
though there is nothing wrong with it just so
that they can “sell more”. In recent years
however I’ve changed my mind somewhat...
now I believe that, by and large, they are
simply responding to consumer demand for
“What’s new?!”.
What do I mean by that? Can you imagine a
company like Fender guitars, for example,
telling us “we haven’t released any new
models this year as our models from last
year were so awesome we didn’t need to change
anything!”? I am sure many of you reading this
would react with a resounding
“Nooooooooooooooo!! I want the NEW one... the
LATEST one!”. It seems to me people WANT and
even demand new models... almost incessantly.
Proof to some extent is how many regular
customers who come into Concept week after week
will start chatting and almost inevitably ask us
“So... what’s new?!” Without expressing it, I
sometimes think to myself “You mean... since
yesterday when you asked the same question?!” But
you know what? There IS always something new...
and maybe that’s exactly why we love it so much.
So, thank you all for being so eager and coming
in so regularly and asking “What’s New?!” It’s a
question we never get sick of... and it is a
question you can be sure we will always have a
ready answer for so that we can help satisfy your
musical cravings!

years. They are solid and cover a lot of situations and they have
recently had a facelift and some changes. Currently the range

balanced and sit very easily. The tone from humbucker and

OMG! OMG! OMG! We are always getting
asked "If you could have your pick of anything
in the shop, what would it be"? Well hello
baby, this one is mine! It is just simply no
nonsense tone delivery. Reissued from a 1971
model, its unmistakeable tube tone allows
everything from well rounded fat, to serious
grind. And if you think that 100 watts doesn't
sound much for a bass head, think again.
Being all-tube, it blows most other amps I've
heard out of the water. It has a 3 band tone
control and 3 rocker switches for mid range
control, balanced line out and weighs only

And plug it into the SVT 212 cab for perfect
voice matching. 2 Eminence 12 inch drivers
and a one inch compression horn, it is the
perfect match, looks great and under 30 kg.

TECH TIP
This is aimed at all fretted stringed instrument players (and possibly all string instruments). Your
string has a steel core and has windings around that core, particularly the E, A, D, and often G
strings. After you play, the windings quickly accumulate oils, dirt, sweat and skin (hmm yummy) and
this can quickly turn your strings dead and unmusical. In bad cases it will cause poor tuning, and
intonation should never be set with old and used strings still on
the guitar. I’ve found that the string cleaning product by GHS
called Fast Fret RR $14.95 is very effective in prolonging the life of
my bass strings. If you like the sound of coated strings like Elixir,
they are also and option. Some bass players boil their strings to
clean them but personally it doesn’t work for me.

After a massive three heats at Ya-Ya’s Nightclub, Tony was
excited to be representing Concept Music on the judging
panel for the State Final held at the Rosemount Hotel. The
quality and musicianship of all bands competing was
exceptional and the state f inal saw some of Perth’s best
Bands battle it out. There could only be one winner and it was
local favs “Edie Green” who took out the championship on
the night. We wish them all the best for their future music
endeavours and also thank the Curtin University Guild team
for organising such a great series of performances.
The National Campus Bands Comp has been running for 22
years and has helped launch the careers of acts such a
Eskimo Joe, Jebediah and the Vasco Era.

It was another very inspiring evening of original
music by Perth bands and musicians at the WAM
Song of the Year 2013 Awards Night at the Fly By
Night Club in Fremantle last month. Store owner
Graham Hoskins was on hand to present two awards
that were sponsored by Concept Music for the School
Age categories. Congratulations to 14 Years and under
winner Emmanuel Navarro (aka ENAV) for his amazing
composition “Listen”. Don’t be surprised if you hear a lot
more from this young artist in the future!
