Elkhart Police are investigating a string of robberies
at area businesses. And residents are dealing with
more home break-ins... the Elkhart Police
Department has been working hard ever since this
crime wave began, and they are making some
progress. Still...it's hard for them to keep up. We
talked with local residents about the robberies and
they say they are doing all they can by keeping an
eye out.
A few glitches on the first day of the new electronic
tolling on the Indiana Toll Road.
Officials say there was some confusion with the IZoom system. Some of the lanes for I-Zoom
subscribers weren't marked... so drivers paying cash
were in the wrong lane.
And some toll booths weren't reading the I-Zoom
devices.
March is Child Abuse Prevention Month... and CAPS
held a moving ceremony in honor of that this
afternoon... Children sang, the crowd heard from
several speakers and they tried a slightly more
positive approach this year.
They put out 3-thousand pinwheels to reflect the 3thousand children who have been born in 2007 in
Elkhart County and the hope they represent. Of
course, this annual event also always remembers
the children lost to child abuse... something that
continues to be a big problem.

It's a national problem and Michiana kids aren't
immune to it either. Bullying is such an issue that
schools here are trying to be proactive.
That's why South Bend Schools took all of their 6th
graders to a special play at the Century Center
today. The national touring group, Bridgework
Theater, does a show that explores bullying and
resolving conflict.
South Bend implemented an anti-bullying program
across all of their intermediate schools this year and
said this was the perfect way to reinforce what
they've been learning all year.

If someone you love were suffering a heart attack....
would you know what to do? More and more
Americans are answering NO to that question. The
National Institutes of Health says Americans die
needlessly from heart attacks... because few people
know how to use a defibrillator. Today FOX 28’s
Cara Jacobs got a crash course on how to use a

They call it a treasure trove of interesting information
about geneaology and local history...and they're
hoping it's now more visible. The historic
preservation commission put up new several new
signs yesterday for the historic South Bend City
Cemetery. The city sign shop designed them and
helped hang them. It came down to one thing... no
one knew anything about the cemetery.

The city of Elkhart is going smoke-free.That's the
City Council's decision after a unanimous vote to
pass the clean air ordinance. It bans smoking in
work buildings and public places The ordinance will
not take effect until Mayor Dick Moore signs it.
Also the smoking ban doesn't affect private clubs,
outdoor areas like golf courses, and designated hotel
rooms. Residents we talked with are on the fence
concerning the issue, while some are for the
ordinance, many are not.
It's an alarming trend... girls are becoming mothers
earlier and earlier. Local health department officials
say they have seen a significant increase in teen
pregnancy. FOX 28's Natasha Ray spoke with health
officials about how bad the problem is in Michiana.
Experts say parents should visit their local health
departments for resources and programs geared to
help them talk to their children about teen
pregnancy, sex, and sexually transmitted diseases.
The work on the I.U. South Bend campus is turning
heads. Indiana University President Michael
McRobbie toured the new additions this week. He
says the apartments south of the St. Joseph River
are going to make a big difference in the community.
McRobbie expects the area to become more
commercial because of the four-hundred students
who will live there. He says they are even better than
he expected.
Notre Dame University is warning students to be
mindful of who they see in and around the dorms....
Campus police say there have been several
burglaries recently. They say the suspects are
student age and took items that could fit in a
backpack. So just how safe are Notre Dame's
dorms? We spoke with some students who live in
the dorms here on campus and they all said they feel
safe and even leave their room doors open.. They
believe the security measures are enough to protect
them...but admit these recent robberies make them
rethink those open doors.
LaVille Junior-Senior High School was on lockdown
for two and a half hours today... after the school
received a phone call saying two students were

taking guns to school. Within 15 minutes the entire
school was on lockdown. Police searched the
school and outside with k-9 units and found a duffle
bag in the field behind the school. Fortunately, the
bag, which belonged to one of the two boys, did not
have guns in it. Concerned parents speak out about
the incident.

The state's new property tax law...is taking a bite out
of South Bend's Public Library Branches. Library
directors say the new law could mean 790 thousand
dollars lost in tax revenue next year. And that means
they're looking to make some changes. Fox 28's
Natasha Ray has more on those changes, and how
they'll affect Michiana residents.
Hundreds of people in Elkhart County dropped off
their hazardous waste today. The county solid waste
management collected items like paint, tires, and
gasoline. They collects these items once a month to
prevent harmful materials from contaminating the
environment. Many of the items can be recycled.
Some area businesses....are cashing in on the
warmer temperatures. The city of St. Joseph relies
heavily on the tourism season. Business owners
there say they look forward to the summer
time...when business picks up...and they see an
increase in revenue.
More bad news when it comes to filling up at the
pump. Gas prices have reached an all-time high.
A survey says they jumped more than 5 cents in the
past two weeks, setting a new record of 3 dollars
and 32 cents per gallon for self-serve regular.
The previous record....3-26..... Drivers in San
Francisco are paying the highest right now....at 3-72
for a gallon of regular unleaded.
Graffiti.. It's a growing problem in South Bend.
And with the temperatures rising, police expect the
issue will only get worse in the coming months.
But what can be done about it? City officials met
today to try to find a solution. Common Council
members, police, code enforcement, and community
members gathered to discuss the problem. They say
its a public safety issue because much of the graffiti
involves gang members...but it also makes the city
less presentable...and discourages potential
business owners and homeowners from coming to
the area. Today, they tossed around a lot of ideas.
Bottom line...they're looking to hold these criminals
accountable.
The town of Nappanee continues its recovery after
being hit by a tornado last October. Many of the 20
or so businesses damaged by the tornado are back
in business, and most of the ones that aren't are
getting close to re-opening. The Taco Bell/KFC
restaurant re-opened last week to huge lines.

Nappanee residents credit teamwork for the
turnaround.
This is a busy week for parents, with a lot of
Michiana schools on spring break. It can also be a
dangerous time. Police want to make sure parents,
kids and drivers are safe during spring break. They
say we should expect to see a lot of kids out, in
parks and in neighborhoods playing.
Captain Phil Trent offers a few tips, like slowing
down in neighborhoods and watching for kids.
He also urges parents to have kids cross the street
at intersections, instead of going between parked
cars.
They're the hidden victims of foreclosure. Worst of
all, they don't even have a voice to stand up for
themselves. They're pets that have been left behind
after the homeowner vacates a house, and they're
taking over local shelters. hard to say for sure
because some of the pets these shelters find are
strays...others are dropped off by the owner with no
explanation. Local shelters say they're taking in at
least one animal per day because of foreclosure.
But what's worse than the numbers...are the stories.
Stories of starving dogs, frozen cats... covered in
their own feces.
American Idol producers are hoping you do a lot
more than make a phone call this week. "Idol Gives
Back" takes place tomorrow night. Last year, the
show raised 76-million dollars for charities and
organizations around the world. The Food Bank of
Northern Indiana received more than 13-thousand
dollars. Food Bank officials say the money helped
them with an important program
Some Elkhart students got a hand's on experience
what it's like to wear the badge... Students talked
with Elkhart County officers as they sat in the police
car and handle a k-9 bullet proof vest. The officers
taught the students about the k-9 unit, and what to
do if they were in a dangerous situation.
It's a growing problem... violent teenage crimes
captured on video and shared on popular websites
like You Tube and MySpace. Just yesterday... video
of a 16 year old Florida girl's attack made national
headlines. FOX 28's Natasha Ray talked with kids
and authorities here in Michiana on why more violent
acts like these are popping up on-line.
Michiana residents go green by recycling unwanted
electronic equipment. Andrews University hosted an
electronic recycling event sponsored by the Berrien
County Resource Recovery Department today.
They accepted just about any electronic device,
including old cell phones, computers and televisions.
With the upcoming digital conversion, officials say
they saw a lot of old TV sets come through.
Senator Barack Obama was just here in Michiana...

FOX 28's Natasha Ray finds out ,how Michiana
taxpayers and officials feel about this
Michiana drivers hit the road for charity.
Blossomland Learning Center in Berrien Springs
held its 7th 'Drive for the Kids' fundraiser today. Tyler
Chrysler lent the school four minivans, and for each
test drive taken, the dealership gave the school five
dollars to go towards fitness equipment for its
students.
Students at IUSB got a chance to check out the
brand new on campus apartments. They toured
around the two and four bedroom apartments that
are available for the fall semester. Students will also
have the option of a one bedroom... all the
apartments are fully furnished. Everyone on campus
says this will be more convenient and bring the
students closer together.
A Michiana college wants to help you go green! I-US-B will hold a sustainability fair tomorrow. More
than 40 local businesses will share tips on becoming
more environmentally friendly inside your home and
outside in your yard. Going green has become all
the rage at I-U-S-B.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month Madison Center
hosted a presentation on repeat drunk driving
offenders today. Drunk driving offenses are down as
a whole but alcohol abuse counselors say there's still
a large number of people who continue to drink and
drive. FOX 28's Natasha Ray shows us how they're
trying to combat this problem.
Senator Clinton makes her second stop in
Michiana... this time talking to employees at the A-M
General plant. The New York Senator and Senator
Evan Bayh toured the plant and talked with
employees about keeping jobs in Indiana and
keeping the nation safe... Two things that matter a
great deal to the workers who help make Humvee
military trucks. Clinton outlined her plan to
strengthen U-S jobs and national security.
Self defense...it can save your life...but sadly many
don't learn the skills. Today...the Mishawaka Police
Department held the first of three self-defense
seminars FOX 28's Natasha Ray found out more on
the classes, and what they're teaching
women....about protection.
An armed robbery has I-U-S-B students and faculty
on high alert. Police say it happened Friday
evening...around 7:30. Two suspects entered
Wiekamp Hall. One of the suspects knocked a

student down, and took his wallet. Both fled the area
on foot. Police are still searching for the suspects.
This incident is putting students on high alert.
More and more American's are living longer
lives...and they're working longer. Saturday....The St.
Joseph County Triad sponsored a fair dedicated to
helping retiree's find ways to enjoy life away from
their careers. Social security agents, and banking
insitutitions were on hand to talk with retirees and
help them plan for the future.
With a recent rash of dorm burglaries at Notre
Dame... and an attempted robbery at I-U-S-B...
safety is becoming a big issue for area students.
And the opening of new on-campus housing on the IU-S-B campus is raising more concerns... Officials
say there will be security guards monitoring the
area...and residents will use key cards to enter the
building. They're not concerned about crime. For the
most part, students we spoke with are on the fence
about the issue. But some say this new housing
development....could open the door for more
parties...and more crime.
South Bend road crews are taking advantage of the
nicer weather...They're continuing their work to fix
those pesky potholes. Street workers were back out
there filling them with hot mix... a permanent
solution. The mix is made up of tar and limestone
chips. You'll also see 1-man trucks out there that can
mechanically fill the holes much faster than men by
hand... They're also much safer for the workers
because they don't have to get out of the truck.
Inflation in the U.S is at its highest in 17 years, and it
could get worse. Delis, bakeries, and restaurants are
paying more for items like cheese, flour, and oil.
As a result.... many are having to increase their
prices. Fox 28's Cara Jacobs spoke to several local
businesses who are feeling the pinch. Many of these
businesses have been around for fifty plus years.
The owners are saying they've never been hit this
hard.
Another Michiana city goes smoke free...
Elkhart's mayor ceremoniously signed the Clean Air
Ordinance today. It means that 30 days from today...
smoking will be prohibited just about everywhere.
One exception... Clubs or establishments that only
allow people over 21-years-of age. The mayor says,
he thinks it's very important to the communities
health and Elkhart's future.
Criminals are often in the headlines...but some are
hoping to put victims at the forefront this week.
It's National Crime Victims Rights Week... and many
who work with victims got together today to talk
about the issues victims face.Indiana Attorney
General Steve Carter joined prosecutor Michael
Dvorak and others to talk about the struggles within

the system that are often overlooked. A couple
surprises... just how bad violent crime is in South
Bend... and how often victims are forgotten as cases
go through the appelate process.
Teachers at Penn High School may have fewer
students in class this Friday. In January... students
found a message written on a bathroom stall that
read "everyone is going to die on 4-18." School
officials are taking that threat very seriously.
They've notified students and parents. Teachers
have discussed what to do if a dangerous situation
should arise. The school is also increasing security.
Police say they've taken special training classes to
prepare for these kinds of situations.
The Elkhart County ICE unit busts a suspected meth
lab and a distribution center. Officers served two
search warrants on Goshen Avenue Tuesday night,
directly across from Elkhart Central High School.
They say one house was cooking the drug, the other
selling it. Prosecutor Curtis Hill says meth dealers
and makers are getting more bold, doing business in
the city instead of out in the county. The location of
this suspected lab posed a serious threat.
The city of South Bend is counting on you to help
clean things up one block at a time. The city
launches its 6th annual 'Adopt A Block' campaign
Saturday morning. This year, residents will adopt
eighty blocks in a near northwest side neighborhood.
Volunteers will clean their blocks six or so times this
year. Officials say the program really works.
It's extremely unpleasant and a health hazard...
Indiana D.N.R. officials say someone's been
dumping cattle carcases near Walkerton. One farmer
in particular has been finding slaughtered cattle
dumped in various areas on his property for over a
year now. The seriousness of it has D.N.R.
investigating and looking for leads in what can
definitely be called a strange case.
Raising awareness of sexual assault in St. Joseph
County is the purpose of a special program this
weekend. A gathering took place tonight at the
Century Center for the "South Bend Community
Monologues." Members of the cast and crew handed
out free t-shirts to anyone who bought tickets to
Saturday night's show. They also talked about the
sexual assault statistics in the county...
It's finally beautiful enough to get the entire family
outside... and why not start with Earth Day
celebrations this weekend. It's South Bend's 20th
year for celebrating Earth Day Arbor Day. On
Saturday, the city will have live music, a pet
parade... the planting of trees, flowers and herbs.
This is part of a the nationwide Earth Day
celebration... to educate people about being
environmently-friendly.

It's what everybody is talking about... an earthquake
hitting the midwest and the shaking could be felt
here in Michiana...The 5.2 magnitude quake hit
around 5:37 this morning... in West Salem, Illinois.
That's about 30 miles northwest of Evansville.
People in St. Louis, Memphis, Louisville, Chicago...
and even as far away as Milwaukee and Atlanta
could feel the tremors.
Celebrate, remember, and fight back! That's the
theme of Culver Academy's first annual Relay For
Life. Tonight was the kick-off the popular fundraiser
for the American Cancer Society...Students from
Culver Academy organized the entire event.
With support from the community... survivors,
students, and volunteers will be walking all night.
Students wanted a way to bring the community and
school together
Prices at the pump broke another record today.
Triple A reports the national average for a gallon of
gas rose to nearly 3.45 a gallon overnight.
Thursday, the price was about three cents cheaper.
Part of the problem, light crude oil reached a record
116 dollars and ten cents a barrel today.
One local agency is hoping to break the cycle as
they take strides to raise money and awareness for
the homeless. The Center for the Homeless is
hosting a 24 hour dance-a-thon. Michiana
residents...and even some celebrities like Regis
Philbin....are putting on their dancing shoes to help
out those in need.
Gas prices are inching higher in Michiana. They've
already hit the 4 dollar mark in parts of the country.
Consumers are looking for relief..... Well....just
today...more bad news. The OPEC Secretary said oil
prices are on the rise again.Oil prices reached new
highs Friday...at 117 dollars a barrel. On Saturday,
the national average price for a gallon of regular
unleaded gasoline rose to a new record high 3
dollars, 47 cents a gallon.Triple AAA's fuel gauge
report shows right now in South Bend....the price for
a gallon of regular unleaded is 3 dollars, 44 cents.
Michiana residents are frustrated.
With soaring gas prices, many are trading in their SU-V's for smaller cars. Some....are even buying
motorcycles to save some cash. With the increase of
biker's on the road... officer's are telling other drivers
to watch out. Officers say riders should wear the
right gear to avoid injury in case an accident should
happen. Helmets, long sleeve shirts and pants, hard
sole shoes, and sunglasses are a must. Officers also
encourage riders to join a motorcycle safety
program.
One Michiana salon is proving they're a cut above
the rest. Salon 301 paired up with Sex Offense
Services and the Madison Center today...for their

In 2007... Elkhart and Marshall Counties ranked
among the highest in the state... for meth labs.
Indiana State Police say right now they're uncovering
at least 3 meth labs per week in Elkhart, St. Joseph,
Marshall, and Kosciusko Counties.
Marijuana is found at a Michiana school...South
Bend police were called to the old Studebaker
Primary Center today. A 16 year old student told a
teacher he found what appeared to be the drug in his
pocket. The school called police, who tested it and
confirmed it was marijuana. Police took the drugs as
evidence, but didn't arrest the teen. The boy told
police he didn't know how the drug got in his pocket.
Studebaker is now used for different programs in the
South Bend School Corporation, including some
G.E.D. classes.

Money isn't the only thing green at a new Michiana
bank. First Federal Savings Bank has opened an
environmentally-friendly branch in Mishawaka.
The bank's president says they're setting the pace
for businesses going green in Michiana. From hybrid
parking spots and bike racks... to geothermal pipes
for heating and cooling... the building is trying to
operate using less energy.
They couldn't reach out to the community without
volunteers, and Elkhart's Salvation Army thanked
them tonight. They held their annual volunteer
appreciation dinner. More than 175 people who give
their time, talent and resources were on hand.
The Corp. gave out some special awards and gave a
presentation on what they were able to accomplish
this past. During these tough economic times, the
need for their services continues to grow and they
are amazed at the number of people who continue to
step up and help.
French fries spoke volumes at Goshen College
today, as students fried them up and then made the

celebrate earth day.
The city of South Bend is making a commitment to
fight global warming. Mayor Steve Luecke
ceremoniously signed the U.S. Conference of
Mayors Climate Protection Agreement at the
Potawatomi Park Greenhouse today. That officially
designates South Bend as a "cool" city. He told the
crowd that South Bend has already taken many
steps to reduce global warming and improve the
environment. Some of those steps include their
decision to buy two all-electric vehicles for use
downtown and at the Potawatomi Zoo, converting
traffic signals to LED's... and embarking on urban
forestation projects. They've also been fighting
against urban sprawl.
It's a difficult decision that more and more Americans
are faced with each day. Many are putting their
health on the backburner... and the health care
industry is feeling the effects. FOX 28’s Cara Jacobs
talked with physicians today about the problems.
The E-R doctors we talked to said the number of
patients he sees each day has increased drastically.
And he says many patients could have avoided a trip
to the E-R...if they put their health first..and saw their
primary care physician. But with the state of the
economy and the soaring gas costs...for some...it's
just not a priority.
Child abuse is a big problem everywhere... but one
agency in St. Joseph County works to prevent any
kind of abuse before it happens. Prevent Child
Abuse of St. Joseph County held a ceremony in
honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
They displayed 68 pinwheels to remind the public to
protect the 68-thousand children that live in St.
Joseph county. The group hopes people walked
away tonight feeling a sense of responsibility not
only to their own children, but to other kids.
He says a breakdown has occured in our society
because so many families are so isolated today.
Elkhart residents will soon have a place to pay their
respects to those who gave their lives in the line of
duty. A year and a half ago, business owner Donald
Fisher decided he wanted to show his support for the
military personnel, police officers, and fire fighters
who gave their lives for us. Today his dream became
a reality, as the mayor and members from all three
services broke ground for a memorial wall. The wall
will be at the corner of Oakland and West Marion.
Gas prices hit another record high today...
The national average price of a gallon of regular
unleaded is just under 3-dollars and 56 cents.
Locally.... gas prices are running above that...
In Elkhart, we found pumps that read anywhere from
3-59 to 3-62 a gallon.That's down a few cents from a

South Bend are up. Many we talked with filling up
today said they're ready for relief at the pump.
Students are walking the quad on the campus of
Notre Dame for a cause! The school is holding its
6th annual Relay for Life.
The fundraising walk raises money for the American
Cancer Society. Students not only have the incentive
to help cancer treatment and research... the top two
fundraisers get a semester of free text books.
We'd all love a car that gets 30 miles to the gallon.
Well, what would you say to one that gets one
thousand miles to the gallon? That's what some
enterprising Michiana high school students are
gunning for. Six different area schools are competing
in the Indiana Mathematics Science and Technology
Education Alliance car competition. Fox 28's Lindsey
Sablan spent the morning with one of those teams.
Lasik surgery may not give you a clear look at the
future. The Food and Drug Administration says many
patients have complained about lasik
surgery...asking them to update the procedures
warnings. Dozens of people talked about having
double vision or severe dry eye. One family
explained how their father became depressed after
having lasik. Others discussed how their life has
been negatively altered since the procedure
Hundreds hit the pavement today to give babies a
healthy start. The March of Dimes hosted their
annual March for Babies walk in Michiana...
The walk helps bring awareness and support for
premature babies. It's a time when parents can
share their stories of struggle with others
High gas prices....hurting people at the pump...and
at the store. In the nation's capitol...some shoppers
seeing their grocery bills doubling. Store
owners..trying to keep their prices consistent..even
though fuel costs are causing a huge ripple effect.
Gas costs are hurting the trucking industry, causing
wholesalers to hike up prices. The growing cost of
grain prices isn't helping, either.
Last year... 16 people in Michiana went to work...
and never came home. Now... in honor of the lives
lost... their families stop to remember and educate
others about workplace safety. United Way held it's
third annual "Safety Sunday" today at Howard Park.
A memorial service was followed by activities for the
whole family.Kids learned about construction and fire
safety. Organizers say It's a way to lend families the
support they need after losing a loved one in a work
related accident.
Some bad news tonight for the local economy...

Third grade students at Stanley Clark got a chance
to get their hands dirty in class today.Professional
potter Curt Buethe (BEE-thee) taught the students
how to work with clay.Students learned how to form
clay on a wheel, glaze their own dishes, and fire
them up in his outdoor kiln. Students say they love
learning from a professional artist... and Buethe says
he loves teaching kids something new.
Michiana voters are gearing up to head to the polls...
But aside from the Presidential primary... do voters
know who the candidates are? Fox 28's Cara Jacobs
found out that they don't have any idea who the
other candidates are. It's a concern that both
Democratic and Republican officials share....and
hope will change before May 6th.
It appears Mishawaka schools has dropped the idea
of a uniform dress code...Instead, the school board
is considering tougher guidelines when it comes to
compliance. The board went over a draft of the
measure. They want parents and staff to get more
involved with enforcing the current dress code.
The new plans will be presented at community
meetings before the board passes any new rules.
Mishawaka Schools hope to have the revised dress
code in place by the start of next school year.
Changes to Medicaid could put a program for the
developmentally disabled in jeopardy. Gateway...
headquartered in Berrien Springs... provides skill
building training for those individuals.
Fox 28's Cara Jacobs found out that one group is
organizing a grass roots effort trying to stop these
changes from happening. a group of about 30
people met at the Berrien Springs Library to talk
about their concerns. Their main concern... is that
the Berrien Mental Health Authority Board wants
fewer developmentally disabled adults working at
Gateway.. and more working out in the community.
Families are saying their loved ones have been at
Gateway for several years, and they're worried
they're going to be kicked out of the program with no
job, no money, and no real direction in life.
Fire Departments from Penn Township and
Southwest Michigan were brushing up on safety
procedures when using a medical helicopter
The safety briefing and joint training exercise was
sponsored by Memorial's Med flight. Med Flight
transports patients to the closest trauma center or
burn center when it's necessary. after time in the
classroom, the fire and e.m.s. personnel were able
to do some hands on work with the helicopter
including some practice loading.

It seems everytime you watch the news... there is a
report having to do with violence in schools. We've
seen young people beaten up on the internet... kids
bullied at school... and a Penn High School student
arrested for planning a deadly attack. But one
Michiana group is hoping to prevent events like this
from happening. FOX 28’s Ken Garcia found out
what this is all about. the Robinson Community
Learning Center held a celebration today for third
through eighth grade students. They say their policy
of teaching kids at a young age to Talk it out... Walk
it out.. and wait it out... is key to preventing violence
in schools and the community.
The St. Joseph Coast Guard is asking local boaters
to help keep the water safe...The Waterway Watch

anything they see. Becasue of their location, one
officer from the St. Joseph Coast Guard says it's
critical for local boaters to help out.
A group of truly upstanding citizens in Plymouth
were hauled off to jail today to benefit M.D.A.
It was their annual Lock-up at Country Auto.Officers
were busy arresting people who then had to scare
up with some serious cash to bond out. That cash
makes up a huge fundraiser for the Muscular
Distrophy Association... and every year they set that
fundraising goal higher and higher.
As we get closer and closer to June, thoughts of
summer activites are starting to flood the minds of
kids in Michiana.Activites like taking part in local
sports camps... But not everyone can afford that sort
of thing... until now. Fox 28's Ken Garcia tells us
about a new program called "Camps for Champs.
The South Bend Regional Sports Commission and
the Boys and Girls Club of Saint Joseph County
were looking for a way to honor Mark Tulchinsky...
the former principal at Tarkington Traditional school.
He died suddenly after a heart attack earlier this
year... and as a way to keep his passion for helping
youth in the area alive... they created "Camps For
Champs" which will help send kids from the boys
and girls club to summer sports camps
Members from the community got an introduction to
the concept of nanotechnology. . Representatives
from Barnes and Thornburg held a seminar... with
professors from Purdue and Notre Dame. There goal
was to explain what nanotechnology is and what it
can do for the Michiana area. Basically it's a level of
science that is unexplored, but it's something so
small that could improve many aspects of our
community.Like energy efficiency, computer and
health care technology.
Not only were they driving to race... but they were

Drug-resistant super bugs like MRSA have been in
the news a lot lately. They can be easy to catch
and tough to shake, especially if you're an athlete.
But an Elkhart company says it has a machine that
can help student athletes stay healthy. And one
northern Indiana school seems to agree.
The South Bend School Corporation honors its top
students! The district held its annual Distinquished
Student Scholars program at the Bendix theater
tonight. It honors graduating seniors who've
excelled in areas of academics, fine arts... along
with school and community service. Around 50
students from all four South Bend public high
schools received honors and scholarships.
School officials say its a great way to acknowledge
student achievement.
A new program for schools explores local
geography as it appeared millions of years ago.
Today, kids took a field trip to the Center For
History to learn about the Ice Age.The program
taught them the impact the ice age had on this
area, the animals that roamed in this area... and let
them see some of the fossilized remains found in
this area. There were inside and outside activities
that helped them learn about what it's really like to
be an Archeologist.
It was a happy homecoming for 160 Michiana
soldiers. Members of the Indiana National Guard,
Company F, 151st Infantry Regiment reunited with
their families today at the South Bend Armory.

is going to Washington! The group is one of six
official Color Guards from across the country

officers. Just last month they marked the one year
anniversary of Corporal Nick Polizzotto's death with
a candleight vigil.

Over the next couple of weeks... college seniors
will be graduating and entering the workforce.
However, with the way the economy is... will there
be any jobs available for them? Fox 28's Ken

career center at Saint Mary's College and they say
their students are not having too much trouble
finding jobs. But some students we spoke with say
it's still pretty hard.
Plymouth High school faculty take extra security
measures... after finding a bomb threat in a
bathroom stall on Tuesday. School officials found
a threat saying there will be a bomb at school
Friday at noon.Students were not allowed to bring
book bags into school today. They also had to use
specific entrances, and Plymouth police were on
campus... Students also had the option of taking
an excused absence. Many students say they
didn't take the threat too seriously.
The South Bend Police Department remembers its
fallen heroes.A memorial ceremony was held
tonight in front of the Fallen Officer's Memorial
outside department headquarters.Corporal Nick
Polizzotto's name was added to the memorial.
He was killed in the line of duty just over a year
ago.The annual event was observed a few days
before National Law Enforcement Week.That's
because several South Bend officers will be
heading to Washington D-C next week to take part
in national ceremonies.
South Bend fire fighters are "setting the stage" for
the 3rd annual World Academy Feis
competition. The tactical rescue team is building 7
stages at the Century Center for the Irish dance

The pain at the pump....getting worse in Michiana.
Gasoline prices hit record levels today. The
average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in
South Bend hit 3 dollars 81 cents. You can see this
gas station off Ireland Road..a little less than the
average.... at 3-79. Same with this gas station off
Nappanee Street in Elkhart.Right now...diesel is
also at an all-time high....at 4.26 per gallon. With
the climb of gas prices... Consumers are
wondering...is any relief in sight? Many are already
making changes to their budgets....but say if this
keeps up...they'll have to make more.
With these high gas prices....comes an increase in

Commuting to and from South Bend could
become a challenge for the next several months.

announced today it's closing four truck assembly
plants, one each in Ohio, Wisconsin, Mexico and
Canada. C-E-O Richard Wagoner says the move
is necessary because people aren't buying S-U-Vs
anymore due to high gas prices.
G-M also says it's thinking about selling or
revamping its Hummer line of trucks.
Mishawaka's A-M General Corporation produces
Hummer's biggest S-U-V, the H2. Many A-M
General workers just got back to work yesterday
following a three-month American Axle strike, and
now they're faced with the possibility that the
trucks they assemble might not be around for
long.Mishawaka Mayor Jeff Rea says he's
optimistic A-M General will continue to produce
Hummer vehicles of some sort.
Teachers and parents are reacting to the decision
to buy out the contract of South Bend School's
Superintendent. The school board voted 5 to 2 last
night... to end Dr. Robert Zimmerman's three year
contract 18 months early.FOX 28's Colleen

A big day for the city of South Bend and Notre
Dame, as they gathered to break ground on the
Eddy Street Commons project. City officials have
partnered with the university to build the multi-use

charities.Michiana Public Auto Auction hosted its
annual charity sale tonight.Vehicles donated to
Hope Ministries in South Bend and Faith Mission
in Elkhart were auctioned off.
Proceeds from sales go back to both charities.
Michiana Public Auto Auction says the reason
they do this is simple...
A Middlebury mail carrier is accused of hoarding
21-thousand pieces of mail in her home.
Some pieces dating back to November.U-S Postal
Service inspectors found the mail a few weeks
ago, but today was the first day people started
receiving their past-due pacakges, letters, and
postcards. FOX 28's Nadia Crow visited residents
on the carrier's delivery route.
And they have mixed feeling about the stolen mail.
The St.Joe Regional Medical Center is speaking
out after announing it's cutting 60 employees.. and
shutting down it's Mishawaka location a year
early. Today.. hospital employees spent the day
talking with those who have lost their jobs..
They are offering them help with building resumes
and working on interview skills. The hospital
president says it's upsetting they have to let
employees go..but the number of patients at the
Mishawaka hospital was dwindling.. and they're
facing serious economic problems..
Those financial issues are mainly due to patients
who can't afford to pay.

When is blowing something up a good thing?
When you're blowing up balloons! That's what the
Michiana Balloon Twister's Club did tonight at the
Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library.
The club built a balloon tree complete with balloon
bugs to help promote the library's "Catch the
Reading Bug" summer program.Apparently,
there's no limit to to what you do with balloon
twisting.
Mother Nature didn't keep some Michiana
residents from raising money for cancer research.
The Relay for Life at New Prairie High School had
to move indoors because of tonight's storms.
Instead of walking the track... they're walking in
the gym all night long.Money raised goes to the
American Cancer Society.Organizers say the
weather didn't dampen the spirits of the
volunteers... as many showed up to take part in
the fight.
Relay For Life volunteers aren't the only ones
donating their time today... Blood donors are
helping others in need as well. Many got out to the
American Legion Post in Bristol today.

A Mishawaka congregation is one step closer to
finally being able to use their church.Half of the
Albright United Methodist Church burned down in
2006.Now two years later... the congregation is all
smiles as they break ground on a new church.
Pastor Dennis Ingle says he and his church
members have made it through a very rough time
by leaning on the community.
Cancer survivors gathered today to celebrate life
and their success after treatment.Hundreds of
cancer survivors and supporters crowded in the
Sauder Hall Center at Goshen College. It's the
fourth year the Goshen Center for Cancer Care
held the event.Former White House Press
Secretary and cancer survivor Tony Snow was
scheduled to give the keynote address.
Unfortunately, because of an illness, he couldn't
make it.But another survivor, Senator Bob Dole
filled-in with stories about his struggle.
It's an annual tradition and a chance to see how
your donations makes a difference in the lives of
local kids with Muscular Dystrophy.60 kids from
across Michiana are at Camp Potawatomi in
LaGrange County for the annual M-D-A summer
camp.The week-long camp gives the kids a
chance to take part in events they wouldn't
normally be able to. Members of ABATE
welcomed campers on their first day...and one
camper tells us why camp is so special to him.
You might start seeing more bike riders, roller
bladers, and walkers in South Bend.
In 2005,
South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke promised a 50mile bike lane. By the end of the year, the city
hopes to be halfway finished with the path.
And don't be surprised if city officials knock on
your door... to ask for help in designing the new
lanes.
The city of Plymouth enacts a curfew ordiance for
minors. The city plans to level fines at young
people who stay out too late. And if they

slapped with a 50-dollar fine.Plymouth Police
Chief and common council members say they
don't anticipate giving out a lot of fines to minors
or their parents for curfew violations. But they do
say that having this ordinance will enforce good
parenting.

turn pet breed and owner information over to the
Humane Society. The county council heard from
people who oppose the law tonight. Opponents
say it targets certain animal breeds and violates
owners' privacy. The Humane Society says the law
helps control the animal population and allows
them to track rabies.
Hundreds of drivers in St. Joseph County were
ticketed for NOT wearing their seatbelts over the
past two weeks.St. Joseph County police ended
their most recent "Operation Pullover" on June
1st.Officers wrote 656 seat belt violations... which
was pretty close to their March campaign. What
dissapoints police... they wrote 36 violations for
kids who were not in proper car seats.
Summer time means keeping your kids
occupied.... and what better way than to make it a
learning experience.Healthworks Museum in
South Bend has various day camps that teach
kids about science... the body... and jobs.Others
include a medical camp... and a green machine
camp, which teaches kids to be environmentally
friendly.
The accusations are troubling... Teenaged girls
being strip-searched, beaten, their communication
monitored... with little contact with the outside
world. Several women are coming forward to talk
about their experiences at Hephzibah
(pronounced Hepsibah) House, a boarding school
for troubled teens in our own backyard of Warsaw.
In a Fox 28 exclusive investigation, we spoke to
many former students who say, for them,
Hepsibah House was a house of horrors.
Michiana shoppers are searching for a place to
find uncontaminated tomatoes.... Fox 28's Kelly
Gilmartin took a look how people are protecting
their health while still enjoying a summer favorite.
With salmonella cases on the rise across the
country, many Michiana shoppers are worrying
about where their tomatoes are coming from.
Some are turning to farmer's markets to ensure
their produce is safe.
Downtown South Bend continues to grow. City
officials broke ground on the new American Trust
Place rehabilitation project at the corner of
Michigan and Washington Streets. The project will
include office space, retail space and condos.
Mayor Steve Luecke says downtown is becoming

School is out for most school districts in Michiana.
And that means plenty of *free* time for teens...
Time that often leads to mischief.FOX 28's Nadia

story is unbelievable.
Just last year we learned that teen marijuana
usage was on the decline. But a new report shows
some alarming data concerning teens who *are*
using the drug. While there's an overall
decrease... we have seen spikes in certain age
groups like eighth graders... that age group is up
27 percent from a report in 1992.Research shows
kids are starting younger and there are some
other trends that would alarm any parent.
Hundreds of Michiana residents have reported
unauthorized debit card withdrawals from foreign
countries. Customers from 10 different area banks
have been affected, with some victims finding

here in Michiana.Home sales in the area are down
about 18-percent.Fox 28's Kelly Gilmartin looked
into the downturn and found it's a great time to
buy. Local realtors say Michiana will likely recover
from the decline in the housing market more
quickly than other areas of the country, because

they're worried about.
-S Marshalls and inspectors with the Food and
Drug Administration seize a shipment and delivery
from a Petco distribution center.Inspectors say the
Joliet, Illinois warehouse had a rodent and bird
infestation near open dog and cat food containers.
FOX 28's Nadia Crow finds out if there is any
immediate concern for pet owners. a re-call hasn't
been issued on the food...and the F-D-A says
there have not been any cases reported of human
or animal illness from any of the pet food that
came from this warehouse. But that doesn't mean
that you shouldn't look twice at what you're
feeding your dog or cat.
The rising cost of gas is prompting one South
Bend city department to switch gears..
Starting this week.. code enforcement officers are
making their rounds on bicycles.
The department is testing out the use bicylces by
most of the city's code enforcement officers.
They're hoping the bikes cut back on the amount
of fuel the department uses.
They also say this will allow officers to better
interact with the community.
South Bend Police are also cracking down on kids
staying out too late. They cited more than 50 kids
between the ages of 12 and 17 last night for
breaking curfew.

During these hard economic times.. many people
rely on charitable services to survive.
But what happens when those services.. are
facing their own cutbacks?FOX 28's Colleen
Bormann talked with a few of those
organizations... When the price of gas or food

But for several organazations whose help relies
heavily on those items.. it's forcing them to reevaulate what they can offer.
While many charitable services are being cut.. a
new program is being offered that goes beyond

We've had a pretty quiet couple of days here in
Michiana. But we are in the summer season when
thunderstorms are common... and that means
lightning. So far this year, lightning strikes have
killed eight people across the country.
Lightning can generate up to one billion volts of
electricity...That's long enough to keep a 100 watt
lightbulb going for three months...So clearly,
lightning is not something to be messed with.
Michiana consumers say they're looking for any
relief that can get..With the rising cost of gas and
food.. many are rethinking their budgets and even

Over a half-dozen robberies from South Bend to
Elkhart took place today and police say they may
all be connected. The earliest happened at Sam's
Food Mart on Mayflower Road in South Bend.
According to the store's owner, a man walked into
the store, told the cashier he had a gun and asked
for money. He then fled the store on foot. This
robbery is just *three* out of the *seven* that
happened over a 12-hour period. It is unusual for
Michiana. Generally, police say they look at a
week or month's time and notice a string of crime,
but not in just one day.And like we said, they
believe one man is the link that connects all of
today's robberies.
Last year the West Nile Virus killed one person in

already had walls and a roof. This started as a
project for the national builders association... and
the local members turned it into a competition.
But the team captains say it's all in good fun...
It's a decision that affects everyone across the
country... including here in Michiana...The U.S.
Supreme Court's ruling issued the first definitive
pronouncement on handgun rights in U.S. history
today. The high court ruled 5 to 4 ... to shoot down
a 32-year old handgun ban in Washington D.C.

the city's way to fight violent crime..Opponents say
it was unconstiutional... The ruling could affect gun
laws in cities across the nation... FOX 28's Nadia
Crow talked with gun owners in Michiana.. There
are a few regulations in place in Michigan. When
you buy a gun in that state it needs to come with a
safety lock or you have to buy one separately.

that's anything like the D-C law.A lot of the people
we spoke today say they wouldn't expect any
extreme regulations being passed in Michiana

under the regulated time for the F-A-A.

Local Government Finance said the school can
move forward with the plan to build a new
Marquette Montessori Academy, renovate Monroe

Washington High Schools. The approval came just

Some giving Michiana residents got all gussied up
for a great cause tonight. The Red Cross of St.
Joseph County held its first-ever 'Red, White and
You" fundraiser tonight at the Gillespie Center.
People dined and danced, and most importantly,
donated to the Red Cross. The money they raise
tonight will go to help local military families.
With the economy getting worse and worse...
many are left wondering what this means for their
futures.Fox 28's Colleen Bormann has more on

talk about the struggling economy.. one major
concern is how this will affect us down the road.

right now.. no matter your age.. to ensure you're
financially set for life.
Some local teens are going without food to ensure

back to Middlebury.
Downtown business owners say it's about time...
South Bend is just weeks away from a major
revitalization project.Hundreds of thousands of
dollars are being invested into Michigan
Street..and the businesses along it. This entire
street will be getting a makeover..The sidewalks
are falling apart.. several street lights don't
work..and there's no sign of green life. The city met
a year ago to patch up some of these problems..
and you're going to start to see signs of their longterm solution.
RV companies are major employers In Elkhart
County but several are starting to fire or lay-off
people.The Newmar Corporation in Nappanee
sent a letter to employees saying that they will be
terminating positions, but say they are unsure at
this time how many jobs they will be cutting.
They say affected employees will be notified by
July 9th.Also, Goshen-based Dutchmen RV's has
laid off over 75 employees from their plants across
Indiana and are not sure when or if those
employees will be called back to work. Both
companies say the poor economy has led to a
decline in RV sales... something that one RV
owner noticed on a recent trip.
A South Bend gas station employee is recovering
from injuries she received after trying to stop a

hitting a person to get away with it... that's
unheard of...
