Development Center II of the Technology Center, the Power Train Engineering
Research Division, the Interior & Exterior Trimming Engineering Research Division
and the Body Engineering Research Division.
Body Engineering Research Division
Body Engineering Research Division is responsible for setting GWM’s different body performance indexes,
designing the body structure, optimizing the product performance and process, and establishing and
maintaining the database. By module, the research division is composed of five professional departments such as
Cabin Department, Sidewall Department, Door Department, Floor Department, and Wagon Box Department,
and it contracts projects and other work through the Project Management Department and the Comprehensive
Technology Department.
President Liu introduced GWM’s hot stamping and forming technology, which is different from ordinary
stamping technology. By this technology, metal materials will be stamped and formed after being heated to
900-950 degrees, and then they will be cooled. In this way, the stampings will be featured by high intensity
(1200-1500Mpa), multiple times those parts deriving from cold stamping. Not only does application of hot
stamping and forming technology help strengthen the body intensity and improve the collision safety, but also
reduce the body weight and the complete vehicle’s oil consumption. In light of the company planning, this
technology will be applied in Haval H2 and H9 that will be put into mass production. In the future, such
technology will be applied in all vehicle models of GWM. Moreover, the research division has applied the laser
welding technology in which laser serves as the heating source. It is noteworthy that the laser welding
technology is characterized by small welding deformation, neat soldering seam, and favorable sealing
performance etc.
The Body Engineering Research Division also carries out internationalized technical cooperation. Today, it is
conducting close technical exchanges and cooperation with international renowned components suppliers like
Suspa and Stabilus, so as to continuously improve GWM’s level of internationalization.
In the future, the research division will invite more international famous experts so as to meet the
ever-increasing project demands. In terms of hardware, it will enlarge its investment in experiments like wind
tunnel laboratory and body-in-white fluid analysis …etc, in order to further validate the vehicle quality.
Power Train Engineering Research Division
Founded in Feb 2012, the Power Train Engineering Research Division is staffed with nearly 300 technicians, and
mainly engaged in researching and developing nine major systems, including engine assembly, transmission
assembly, clutch system, radiator system, suspension system, intake system, exhaust system, gear shift system, and
fuel system …etc.
As always GWM took the lead in developing China auto industry’s most trendsetting power technology: in terms of
diesel power, it not only completed the development to Euro V standard power assembly and complete vehicle, but
also cultivated the ability of developing Euro VI standard diesel power. With respect to the gasoline power, GWM
was the first company in China that completed development of gasoline direct injection technology and product, and
it will equip H8 with this technology, according to President Zhao
Besides, Power Train Engineering Research Division made in-depth analysis on those issues that overseas distributors
showed much interest in. In view of the fact that vehicle may incur lack of power and poor grade ability in some
mountainous markets, technicians worked closely with local distributors to optimize technically the vehicle’s power
performance and transmission system. As for lack of power arising from poor thermal compatibility, GWM set up a
Thermal Management Department in September last year, in a bid to improve the vehicle design capacity from different
aspects like planning, design, development, and validation. It was revealed from President Zhao GWM would attach more
importance to localized development and validation in the future, and do a good job of product assessment and validation
before launching the new products into market. In the respect of small-displacement engine, GWM is always active and
pragmatic. For instance, Great Wall H6, as compared to products of its class, took the lead in adopting 1.5L supercharged
engine to realize the product mix between small displacement and large complete vehicle. Subsequently,
small-displacement engine of high efficiency and low displacement is still the core in its R & D work.
Power Train Engineering Research Division persisted in internationalized technical cooperation, and worked closely
with international renowned component suppliers including AVL, FEV, BOSCH, and MAHLE etc in terms of
engineering design and system development, which ensured vehicle’s high quality in the overseas markets.
In the future, the Power Train Engineering Research Division will continue investing in development of clean &
high-efficiency internal-combustion engine, research and development of hybrid power technology, development and
investment of combustion technology, thermal management technology, and emission post-processing technology
…etc. Meantime, it will follow the SUV-oriented market trend to further develop four-wheel drive technology, in
order to optimize the coordination between products and technical platforms.

All told, the Interior & Exterior Trimming Engineering Research Division consists of seven product development
departments (including Seat Department, Sealing Department, Soundproof and Heat Insulation Department,
Instrument Panel Department, Front & Rear Bumper Department, Sidewall Trim Panel Department, and
Exterior Trimming Department) and two management departments (i.e., Project Management Department and
Comprehensive Technology Department). So far, it has been staffed with 258 technical talents. With a view to
realizing the product value that focuses on exquisiteness and artistic sense, the Interior & Exterior Trimming
Engineering Research Division integrates exquisite work with the entire product development process.
Founded in 2007, the Development Center II is currently staffed with 210 technicians, including senior engineers, engineers, and assistant

modeling and structural design, introduced main section design at the phase of CAS design, and brought in
platform-based design and CAE analysis at the phase of structural design.
In addition, the Interior & Exterior Trimming Engineering Research Division attaches great importance to the
internationalized R & D and cooperation. On the one hand, it conducted identification, investigation and analysis to
interior trimming color, grain, human-machine comfort, and convenience according to different countries’ laws and
regulations, national conditions, and the human being’s skeleton condition, in order to facilitate the model design
input. On the other hand, it forged strategic partnership on parts supply with domestic and overseas renowned
component suppliers like Fuyao Group, MINTH Group, TRW Group, and WEBASTO Group …etc, in a bid to
coordinate with the product design, as well as control the product development progress and design quality.
President Gu predicted that by 2015, the research division would be staffed with 700 technicians, and 11 units of
software and hardware equipments for human-machine engineering analysis and comfort validation & simulation

body mode etc. Application of CAE analysis during the vehicle design process helps shorten the development cycle, reduce subsequent
investment and reworking, and ensure the product development quality, according to President Xu. Since being launched into the market, Great
Wall H6 has won 10-plus honorary titles, such as “MPV of the Year” “Consumer Vehicle of the Year”, “Independent Model of the Year 2012”, and
“C-NCAP 5-star Assessment in Safety Performance” …etc. At present, Great Wall H6 is on hot sale in Chinese market with monthly sales
exceeding 20,000 units, making it become a new king in China’s SUV segment.
In addition to following the “Safety and Environmental Protection” motto, Great Wall C50 abides by the “High-Tech and Human-Oriented” design
philosophy, and has in succession undergone a 36-month development process that involved concept design, scheme design, engineering design and
products validation during the period from project approval in 2008 to mass production. According to President Xu, German car of European family
serves as Great Wall C50’s quality benchmark, so Great Wall C50 can represent Chinese independent brands in terms of quality and performance.
Moreover, Great Wall C50 has also passed C-NCAP five-star safety performance assessment. In the second half of this year, Great Wall C50 is bound to

As for parts and components selection, the Development Center II always attaches great importance to the close coordination with the parts &
components suppliers, and has introduced components and systems from many international renowned suppliers, such as Electronic Fuel
Injection system from Bosch/Delphi, Electronic Vacuum Pump from Germany Hella, and automobile safety products from AUTOLIV … etc.
During the design process, the Development Center II reduced application of nonstandard parts as much as possible, improved standard parts’
general utilization and platform orientation, cut down the product cost, enhanced product interchangeability and universal property, and
improved the complete vehicle performance and quality of Great Wall vehicles.
President Xu said: “Now, the Development Center II has established the complete design capacity of meeting market demands in European
Union and North America, and it is committed to launching more exquisite Great Wall products into overseas market. In the future, the
Development Center II will still focus on R & D of SUV and always uphold the service motto ‘Treat People with Honesty, Produce Car
Meticulously’, in a bid to bring more surprises to consumers at home and abroad.”
