The Enticing Sounds of Brazil
The Lucini Brothers The Enticing Sounds of Brazil A mericans have had a love affair with Brazilian music since the 1962 release of the mega hit album, Jazz Samba featuring Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd. With their fabulous melodies, harmonies and rhythms, the captivating sounds of Brazil continue to roll in on American shores. American jazz music has also influenced Brazilian musicians. Among them are virtuoso seven-string bassist and composer Leonardo Lucini and his brother, percussionist Alejandro Lucini. Steeped in Western classical and jazz music, they teach at the university level and perform widely. Their music conveys the refreshing sounds of cool jazz infused with cross continental rhythms and the stylistic undercurrents of their native Brazil. o Lucini Leonard Born in Rio de Janeiro, the Lucini brothers have performed together for more than a decade, increasing awareness of Brazilian culture through music. Many acclaimed international musicians have performed with them: pianists Alex Brown, Benito Gonzalez, Arturo O’Farrill and Federico Peña; saxophonists Jeff Antoniuk, Alex Han, Leo Gandelman, Raul Mascarenhas, Paulo Moura; and guitarist Rogerio Souza. In the States, they’ve enlivened major music festivals and brought their intriguing music to Smithsonian museums. They have played the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, Blues Alley, Kennedy Center and Carter Baron Amphitheater in the Washington, DC area, where they currently reside. The Brazil Project especially focuses on the pleasing sounds of Samba and Bossa Nova. Audiences enjoy hearing memorable tunes such as “So Danco Samba,” by Antonio Carlos Jobim, “Song for My Father,” by Horace Silver and “Mas Que Nada,” by Jorge Ben. In the Origem Band, the Lucini brothers infuse their jazz with musical styles from the Southeast and Northeast regions of Brazil: Samba, Bossa Nova, Forro, Afoxe and Maracatu. The group’s winning originals were captured in their last album, Ijexa (pronounced eesh yay SHA), and are featured in their 2012 album Reflections: Crossing Blue Waters.
