PHOENIX CINEMA
AU G U S T & S E P T E M B E R 2 016
WELCOME
August brings a mix of European
and world cinema as well as some
fantastic family films. As well as
the long-awaited sequel to Finding
Nemo, we’re bringing you the best
in British storytelling, with a new
adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s
classic. As always, our low pricing
means visiting the Phoenix is an
affordable treat for all.
As the summer holidays end, two of
the Phoenix’s favourite directors bring
their best to the big screen. With both
Julieta and Café Society big hits at the
festivals this year, we’re delighted to see
Almodóvar and Allen at the top of their
form.
We’re excited about:
- revisiting the Phoenix as a vampirical film
set (p.25)
- getting our glad rags on and returning to the
Swingin’ Sixties (p.25)
- seeing local author Mike Carey’s cult novel
brought to life (p.11)

An adaptation of three inter-related short stories by Pulitzer-winning
Canadian author Alice Munro circling around ideas of yearning,
memory and loss. After a casual encounter, a brokenhearted woman
decides to confront her life and the most important events about her
stranded daughter. A welcome return to the female-centric storytelling
that has previously earned Pedro Almodovar his greatest acclaim.
Direct from opening this year’s Cannes Film Festival comes Cafe Society,
Woody Allen’s highly anticipated 47th film. Set in the 1930s, this
bittersweet romance follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman to Hollywood,
where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in
the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. Centering on events in the
lives of Bobby’s colourful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine
to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and
gangsters who epitomised the excitement and glamour of the age.
“Excellently acted, brightly filmed, Julieta is seriously good.”

A remarkably naturalistic and deeply moving tale of two boys at odds
with their warring families from Ira Sachs (Love Is Strange).
When 13-year-old Jake’s grandfather dies, his family moves from
Manhattan back into his father’s old Brooklyn home. There, Jake
befriends the charismatic Tony, whose single mother Leonor runs the
shop downstairs. After Jake’s parents ask Leonor to sign a new, steeper
lease on her store, a feud ignites between the adults and soon enough the
conflict intrudes upon the borders of the boy’s friendship.
Not only a joyous cinematic experience but a profound and moving one
too.
