Township Withdraws from
Potential Energy Aggregation
Program Amid Contract
Concerns
Keeping their pledge to halt progress on an Energy Aggregation
savings program if favorable terms were not met, the Manchester
Township Council, with the support of Mayor Kenneth Palmer, last
week passed a resolution of withdrawal from a potential cooperative
agreement including other local towns.
Manchester officials had been in talks to join the cooperative
agreement with Stafford Township and Lacey Township that would
pool customers together to secure a bulk rate for electricity from
a third party supplier at a cost lower than JCP&L. From the start,
Manchester officials made it clear to residents that the Township
would not move forward without favorable contractual terms.
The State Board of Public Utilities Rate Counsel recently reviewed the
proposal and recommended that the Township should alter the terms
of the agreement because it requires Manchester to remain in the
cooperative even if the aggregation cost is above JCP&L’s price. The
Township Council, Mayor Palmer and Township Attorney expressed
the same concern during negotiations and agreed that the terms
were unacceptable.
While residents would have had the option to opt-out of the
aggregation program at any point, including during an unfavorable
rate change, this process would require action by each residential
electricity subscriber. As a safeguard, Township officials wanted
the ability to terminate the program for all residents should the
aggregation rate be beyond JCP&L’s newly adjusted price. Since the
energy consultant in concert with Lacey Township would not agree
to alter the terms, Manchester officials decided not to move forward
with this cooperative agreement.
“Energy aggregation is a concept that the Township has been
interested in for many years, as it promises savings on a basic necessity.
As is evident by this withdrawal, the Council and I are committed to
completing our due diligence before entering into any agreement,”
said Mayor Palmer. “The terms must be favorable for our residents.”

MEGAN’S LAW OFFENDER
ARRESTED FOR FAILING TO
REGISTER
Shawn Milne
On July 20th Toms River
Detectives Jennifer Grob
and Thomas Grosse signed
criminal complaints against
Shawn Milne, 46 of Fischer
Boulevard in Toms River.
The charges are as a result
of him failing to meet his
registration
obligation
under New Jerseys Megan’s
Law. Registrants are required
by New Jersey state law to
either register annually or
every ninety (90) days with
the police department of
the municipality in which
they reside.
The investigation revealed that Milne failed to register his address
with the Toms River Township Police Department within the specified
time frames. He also did not meet the requirements for notification
of his employment status which is also in violation of the conditions
of his Megan’s Law status. Toms River now remains as Milne’s
current residential municipality. An arrest warrant was reviewed and
approved which charged him with two counts of failing to register
under NJ Statute 2C:7-2. On July 20th at 8 pm Milne was taken into
custody without incident at his residence on Fischer Boulevard by
Officer Travis Seaman. Also cooperating with the investigation were
members of the Ocean County Prosecutors Office. He remains in the
Ocean County Jail on $25,000 bail.
Milne is facing the third (3rd) degree crimes of failure to register
pursuant to N.J.S.A. 2C:7-2d(1). These statutes (N.J.S.A. 2C:7-1

UNITED WAY OF MONMOUTH AND OCEAN COUNTIES
FORMED BY MERGER OF LOCAL UNITED WAYS TO
SERVE THE JERSEY SHORE
United Way of Monmouth County and United Way of Ocean
County have merged to create United Way of Monmouth and
Ocean Counties. The new organization has a combined
30-member Board of Directors and will maintain its two offices
in Farmingdale and Toms River. It will jointly serve the residents
of both Monmouth and Ocean Counties by partnering with
local organizations to build initiatives that address common
goals in the areas of education, income and health.
“Separate entities can’t make the same impact as a unified
one,” says Jeremy Grunin, new Board Chair of United Way of
Monmouth and Ocean Counties, Executive Director of The
Jay & Linda Grunin Foundation and Vice President of Grunin
Holdings. “Together, we’ll continue to make a difference for our
communities through initiatives that create lasting change,
but we’ll also extend our reach, build broader partnerships
and deepen the impact of our efforts for the Jersey Shore.”
Prior to being appointed Board Chair of the combined
organization, Grunin served on the board of United Way of
Ocean County for the past three years, most recently as an
Executive Board member.
“As a unified entity, we are poised to combine our individual
strengths and best practices to better serve the residents of
Monmouth and Ocean Counties,” adds Timothy C. Hearne,
former President and CEO of United Way of Monmouth County
and now President and CEO of the new organization. “There
is great enthusiasm among our staff and Board members as
we come together,
and we’re excited
to begin this new

ARIES: 21st March & 20th April
It will be easy to realize the type of things you need to let go of or
get rid of so that you can get matters in place in a settled manner.
What can be playing a strong role is having developed a completely
different view of where you now want to head in life. It should not be
difficult to move on with a sense of confidence to early August
TAURUS: Born between 21st April & 20th May
You should feel a lot more confident when it comes to communicating
your ideas to others. It will not be difficult to work out what they are
prepared to accept or listen to. It would be best not to put forward
anything too radical when it comes to the position they have taken.
Just move on and focus on structuring your own situation.
GEMINI: 21st May & 20th June
Get final details into place when it comes to financial matters
connected to daily activities. Don’t be tempted to go off track
because something out of the ordinary suddenly appeals to you. You
should then be able to move on and enjoy situations more to your
liking to early August. There could also be a lot of running around.
CANCER: 21st June & 22nd July
Putting final touches in place when it comes to personal matters
should be quite easy as long as you don’t take on obligations that
can suddenly pop up. Finances will require some attention to early
August. It would be better to find ways of enjoying yourself that do
not involve a lot of spending. Don’t jump to conclusions.
LEO: 23rd July & 22nd August
Focus on what needs to be finalized so that things can be put into
place in a stable manner. This might go back to what was attempted
early in the year. Mercury, the planet of communication moves into
your sign to 31st July and Venus until the 6th August, generating
decisions about pleasure, peace and harmony in your life.
VIRGO: (Born between 23rd August & 22nd September
It should not be difficult to combine ideas that you have with what
needs to be your main priorities. Whether someone else agrees is not
the point – you have to be comfortable. You will go into a waiting
stage to early August. It would be wise to find quiet time to yourself
so that you can contemplate what is best for you.
LIBRA: 23rd September & 22nd October
Time to review what you have learned about yourself over the last 12
months, especially when it comes to pressure others place upon you
for greater freedom for them. Challenge any commitments you no
longer want to accept. Then you can move on and consider your own
priorities in a balanced manner to early August.
SCORPIO: 23rd October & 21st November
The opportunity to take action towards initiating future goals will
fall into place more easily now where early in the year it was met
with hurdles or blockages. You should not ignore the way this can
dramatically alter daily routines you now have in place. Making the
commitment can be necessary from now to early August.
SAGITTARIUS: 22nd November & 21st December
Support could come from surprising quarters, particularly involving
any situations in which you have needed to be creative. In some
ways it will be like finalizing things so that you can begin to move on
from early August. You can feel as though you have come out of the
unknown with a whole new world in front of you to explore.
CAPRICORN: 22nd December & 19th January
Don’t ignore any rebellion that might be expressed by someone
else. They could be more determined than ever to carry through
with whatever they articulate. You just need to ensure that it cannot
interfere with your own priorities and this should not be difficult for
you to do. Consider what you have learnt about obligations.
AQUARIUS: 20th January & 18th February
The more comfortable you are about your commitments the easier
it will be to get daily routines in place that are complimentary to the
situation. Any lacking of appreciation you may have felt from others
recently can begin to change and improve greatly to early August.
You will becomes busier with others as well.
PISCES: 19th February & 20th March
You have had the opportunity to see what is possible to create in the
future though you might have to accept that it needs to remain in
the bounds that can be afforded financially. You will need to focus on
details or what needs to be done on a daily basis to early August. You
are not likely to get much encouragement from others.

Toms River Animal Facility Joins
“Clear the Shelters” Day
(Toms River, NJ) Toms River Animal Facility is joining “Clear the Shelters” day, a nationwide
push to find homes for pets in need. This Saturday, July 23, from 1-4 pm all adoption fees are
being waived.
Bring a photo ID and be ready to fill out adoption paperwork.
Finding these pets’ quality homes is even more critical during the summer after the
populations at shelters swell due to abandoned and surrendered pets following spring births.
“We are excited to participate in this amazing event this year, and we want the community
to remember our brand new shelter first for a new family member to adopt,” said Jim Bowen,
Division Manager of the Toms River Animal Facility.
There are 8 dogs, 9 cats and 5 kittens looking for “fur-ever” homes. Check them out here.

ENERGY
from page 4
Given its merits, officials now plan to move forward with
energy aggregation, but without the use of a cooperative.
The Township Council is expected to introduce a resolution
to advertise for bids for a consultant at an upcoming regular
meeting.
Energy aggregation provides for a lower electricity bill while
retaining service from JCP&L. As Mayor Palmer previously
explained, JCP&L will continue to service residents’ homes while
the electricity will be delivered by another provider at a lower
cost. The program works through an “opt out” system, meaning
residents would be automatically enrolled unless they return a
postcard indicating they do not want to participate. Residents
with solar panels and those already enrolled in another energy
program will not be included in the program.

today’s economy, and joblessness on the
rise, it is no joke. More and more people
are turning to food pantries for help.
They don’t like it. But they have
no choice, especially those with children.
United Methodist Church, on
Rte 9, in Bayville, is just one of many
such food pantries. And they give lots to
those who are signed up. Each Tuesday
and Saturday between 8 and 11 am, if
you are a resident of Berkeley Township,
just go to the Fellowship Hall, at the rear
of the church, and ladies await you for
information.
“You will need to bring with you a picture
ID with your address, and your SSI or SSD
amount from Social Security,
and that’s about it,”
Once registered, you sign in
at Fellowship Hall, on any of
those two days. There’s not
much of a wait,” said Joyce,
who is a volunteer registrar.
Food item wants are filled
out there.
Before
you
know it, you’re name is called,
and you go into the “Loaves
and Fishes” Food Room, where
volunteers, Fran Galleto, Ray
Louise Wojcicki, and teens,
Gregory and Daniel Leifert, will
take your pre-order.
They offer brand name breads,
bagels, milk, juice and cereals.
Chips, frozen meats, fish and chicken, bags full of unsold WaWa
sandwiches and hashbrowns, tomatoes on the vine, 10 lb. bags of
potatoes, carrots, onions, and other in-season produce.
Also offered are sanitary products, toothpaste, mouthwash, oragel,
deodorants, and sunscreens in many forms.
You will leave with several bags of food, all of which are carried to
your car by volunteers.
“I don’t know what we’d do without this,” said a young mother of
four. “It really is a blessing, and we are so very grateful.”
Yes,” said another recipient. “It certainly helps ends meet. We are all
thankful.”

IT’S ALMOST THAT TIME - By JoAnn LaRusso
July 22nd, 2016 The Ocean County Gazette - www.ocgazette.news 19
Sadie Rose Nastasi will be born into this wonderful world on, or about, Aug. 16th, and new
mommy to be, Laura and husband,
Nick, are just ecstatic.
That happiness overextends to his
daughters, Cheyann,15, who lives
with the couple, and Hailey,16, of
Florida, along with granny to be, Ellen
Kaveney, and husband, Larry. Laura’s
dad, Mike Boyle of Forked River, and
dozens of guests evidenced that last
week at Laura’s surprise baby shower.
Of course, the theme was pink, right
down to the writing on the huge
cake laid out on the dessert table.
The buffet that was served included
everything from soup to nuts, and
then some. Many of the guests
offered to bring a dish, and chicken,
baked ziti, cold cuts and salads were
eaten with gusto by the roughly 70
friends that attended.
Laura, as guest of honor, sat in her
tulle covered throne, with all her
bridal attendants, and opened the
mountain of gifts piled high on the
gift table. Rose was her grandmother,
Rose Cucci’s name.” We both liked the
name Sadie,” said the mom-to-be.
Laura’s, Aunt Kathy, made the
“wishing well”, that is a so popular at
today’s baby showers, where guests
put in little baby favors like rattles,
teething rings, you get the idea.
“It’s a beautiful affair,” said Donna of Toms River. ”I’m so happy for Laura. She’s been married
a year and was hoping. She loves Nick’s daughters as her own, and now little Sadie Rose will
make them whole.”
The couple owns a landscaping
business. “That work will be put on
hold for me,” Laura said. The real job
will be when Sadie Rose is born, and
Laura gets up every day and does
what mothers do.
“I know I’m ready for it,” she said. “The
closer the date gets, the more excited
we become. And Cheyanne and
Hailey are thrilled as well. They can’t
wait to hold their little baby sister,”
said Laura.
“As a friend of grandmother to be,
Ellen, I can only say I wish Laura the
best, and a beautiful healthy baby.
And when Sadie Rose is born, I guess you could easily say it will be a “fullhouse.,” joked Janie
Colangelo, of Seaside.
The pre-natal memories will fade fast when Sadie is born, and starts growing up as quickly as
babies do, from toddlers to teens. “The ultrasound was magnificent,” Laura rightly bragged.
“They are so magical. I couldn’t stop giggling through the whole experience. Nick had tears
in his eyes.”
We wish this happy family the best, and that is what they look forward to, and deserve.
Raising a child is no easy task. It takes lots of patience and lots of love!
We’re ready,” Laura said.“More than ready. Just thinking that it’s almost time for her to be
borne, is more than I could hope and pray for.”
Welcome, Sadie Rose Nastasti..You are loved!

South Jersey Cultural Alliance Cut Ribbon
on New Offices
at Stockton’s Kramer Hall on July 19
Galloway, N.J. - The South Jersey Cultural Alliance has
relocated to Kramer Hall, Stockton University’s instructional site in
Hammonton, N.J., and will celebrate with ribbon-cutting festivities
and $1,000 gift to Main Street Hammonton on Tuesday, July 19 from
1-2:30 p.m.
The event begins at the site at 30 Front St. at 1 p.m. with a
networking lunch including SJCA board members, Stockton President
Harvey Kesselman and other university officials, officials from
Hammonton, SJCA members, and partners and funders including
Creative NJ, the NJ State Council on the Arts, ArtPride NJ, Advocates
for NJ History, PNC Bank and New Jersey Community Capital.
The event will include a tour of the Hammonton Arts District
(weather permitting) and/or a tour of the exhibit located within the
Art Gallery at Kramer Hall which honors the various historic industries
of Hammonton. This exhibit is a collaboration between Stockton
University and the Noyes Museum of Art.
South Jersey Cultural Alliance (SJCA), a nonprofit membership
organization, serves over 100 regional arts and history organizations
in South Jersey. SJCA strengthens members by providing marketing
and promotion, professional development, information, resources
and advocacy.
The group sees the move to Kramer Hall as helping to align
its efforts with those of other non-profit agencies, businesses and
educational institutions which focus on the promotion of arts, history
and culture of South Jersey.
President Kesselman initiated the collaborative effort
between Stockton and SJCA at the Noyes Museum’s annual gala in
October 2015 and will give welcoming remarks at the event.
“SJCA is delighted to be part of Hammonton’s creative
community. With a growing arts district, two co-op artists spaces,
the Noyes Museum, the Eagle Theatre, a Main Street Third Thursday, a
makerspace and extraordinary culinary opportunities, SJCA fits right
in,” said Karen Pinzolo, executive director. “With SJCA’s new affiliation
with Stockton University, we are looking forward to new synergies
to strengthen our community in Hammonton as well as the entire
southern New Jersey region.”
Hammonton officials will lead the SJCA in cutting the ribbon
on its new offices, while Ben Ott, president of the Hammonton
Revitalization Corporation, will accept a $1,000 check for Main Street
Hammonton. The gift helps to kick off Main Street Hammonton’s
fundraising campaign for a piazza that would be used for its new
NJ Fringe Festival and arts activities year-round, especially on Third
Thursdays.
“The officials and people of Hammonton and Stockton University
have been gracious hosts. We look forward to working together to improve
the quality of life of southern New Jersey through art, history and culture,”
said Tim Hart, president of the SJCA Board of Trustees. “Our relationship with
Stockton University is key to the sustainable future of SJCA.”
“Having SJCA located within Kramer Hall provides us with
boundless opportunities to collaborate with Stockton faculty and students,
as well as the diverse group of community partners we have cultivated
throughout the Town of Hammonton,” said Eileen Conran-Folks, director.
“We hope to create a partnership with SJCA which will allow us
to expand our lecture series and seminars related to the arts. In addition,
we hope to create internships for our students studying in the Arts and
Humanities,” she added. Stockton faculty and staff will be able to participate
in workshops and other seminars that SJCA sponsors to celebrate South
Jersey’s arts and culture.
Kramer Hall also serves as the Hammonton site for the South Jersey
Culture & History Center at Stockton University, (SJCHC) led by Director Tom
Kinsella, a Stockton professor.

Teaching American Literature in Greece
Shows Power of Collaborating Across
Cultures
Stockton Associate Professor Kristin
Jacobson Is First Faculty Member
To Participate in Exchange with Aristotle
University
Galloway, N.J. - Kristin Jacobson, associate professor of
Literature at Stockton University, this summer has been teaching
American literature to students at Aristotle University, one of the
largest universities in Greece’s public system of higher education.
“It’s important to think about American culture in a global
context - that’s the heart and soul of our graduate degree in American
studies,” she said. “Stockton has a commitment to global education,
which is needed because our culture doesn’t exist in isolation.”
Jacobson, the first Stockton faculty member to participate
in an ongoing exchange program with Aristotle University, spent
two weeks teaching undergraduate classes and meeting with
graduate students and faculty. She also gave public lectures on
adventure and the environment, feminist teaching methods and
technology, and creative thinking and writing with a focus on the
American wilderness. About 80,000 students attend the university in
Thessaloniki.
She gave the students “an opportunity to grapple with an
American poet making a claim about Greek culture,” by discussing
the poem “Helen,” by Hilda Doolittle, a writer of the early 20th
Century known as “H.D.”
The writer states that “‘All Greece hates’ Helen of Troy,” a
jumping off point for the students to discuss H.D.’s intent and “how it
makes them feel.”
24
July 22nd, 2016 The Ocean County Gazette - www.ocgazette.news
“Is she using Greece as a way to represent a
difficult idea, about patriarchal cultures and
Western thinking?” Jacobson inquired.
Students uncovered a range of
interpretations for how the poem interpreted
Greek and American cultures and their views
on beauty, women’s roles in politics, and
whether or not Western thinking about
these topics has changed since H.D. wrote
the poem.
Jacobson’s role was to begin the
exchange of faculty and help to grow the
program, which is intended to “find ways
for our students to communicate with
their students, through virtual and/or real
exchanges,” she said. “Students at both
institutions may work on a project together
via the internet,” she added.
Tatiani Rapatzikou, an assistant
professor in the Department of American
Literature and Culture in the School of
English at Aristotle University, will visit
Stockton in October to give a public
lecture and teach several classes, including
a graduate American Studies class with
Deborah Gussman, professor of American
Literature.
In addition to teaching, Jacobson
had the opportunity to learn more about
the daily lives of Greek citizens enduring
economic and societal upheaval.
“Greece is really in a crucial time
with the refugee crisis, the future of the
European Union, and the significant
economic austerity measures they are
grappling with,” she said. “Taxes were raised
on coffee and other daily essentials - almost
everything you purchased was being taxed.”
There are hiring freezes in many
fields, including at universities and
hospitals, she said.
“I saw protests
and students participating in democracy,
including student elections, which are taken
so seriously that the university does not hold
classes then, to enable everyone to vote.”
The port city of Thessaloniki is a
beautiful juxtaposition of modern infrastructure
set amidst Byzantine architecture.
“There’s a very modern café with an
archeological dig going on by the side of the road,”
she said. “In trying to build the metro, they found
artifacts from the ancient road, which are being
researched, but which also delayed construction.”
Her trip included visits to Thessaloniki’s
Roman forum and the White Tower, “an icon of the
city on the waterfront dating to when Thessaloniki
was a walled city occupied by the Turks,” she said.
She credited Rapatzikou and David Roessel,
professor of Greek Languages and Literature,
with initiating the exchange program, and
thanked Deans Lisa Honaker of the School of Arts
& Humanities and Rob Gregg of the School of
General Studies for their support. “The hospitality
of Aristotle University was amazing and the
faculty and students were open and welcoming,”
she added.

Toms River Regional Schools Creates
Title I Summer MakerCamp
District addresses summer learning loss with grant funding.
For some students, coming back to the classroom in September is as hard as
readjusting to the early morning wakeup; it can take weeks to get back into the school
mindset. Many families do not have the means to provide enriching opportunities for their
children over the summer. The Toms River Regional School District is addressing this “summer
learning loss” through a $100,000 New Jersey Department of Education innovateNJ grant
targeting Title I schools.
According to Superintendent David Healy, the district has been in a curricular and
mindset makeover over the past two years to address new state standards in technology,
careers, and the core subject areas, and to bring more creative control back to teachers. “From
kindergarten to 12th grade, lesson plans are shifting increasingly to hands on, problembased learning, with real world applications and a wider variety of tools and materials,” says
Healy.
Last October, the district created the Jersey Shore Makerfest, which drew over 100
presenters and more than 4000 participants from all over the east coast. Starting in January,
it partnered with Office Depot to create a $60,000 Innovation Station with high tech displays,
furniture, and 3D printers. It went to a full day kindergarten model with multisensory learning
centers at its core. And on NJ Makers Day in March, it played host to twelve districts from
across the state, both live and virtually, in joint projects involving programming, cardboard
constructions, and digital badging.
Says Healy, “In challenging financial times, in a district with almost 16,000 students
and learning programs in 19 buildings, it can be difficult to implement initiatives across
every school simultaneously. Finding grants that match our mission creates opportunities
to research and test innovations in individual locations while having little impact on the
budget.” In the past year alone, the district has worked with nearly half a million dollars in
grants, including awards from the Grunin Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts,
and the Department of Education.
The MakerCamp grant was written by Assistant Superintendent Marc Natanagara
with support from district staff. “Our cross-disciplinary teacher team has pushed us to look
at learning as an organic whole, rather than divided up into discrete periods of separate
subjects. That’s not how we approach problems in real life, and our educators are finding
ways to use more holistic strategies in their classrooms.”
The program runs for six weeks, Monday through Friday. Each week is thematic,
includes a field trip, and focuses on one or more real world problems. The themes are:
The Jersey Shore, Robotics, Art and Society, Weather and Climate, Food and Health, and
Manufacturing and Design. Supervisor of Educational Technology Tiffany Lucey will be the
site director. According to Lucey, “This program promotes career-ready and maker practices,
with skills, concepts and projects spilling over from week to week so students have a sense
of the interconnectedness of learning.”
Says Natanagara, “What is unique about MakerCamp is its nearly complete departure
from a traditional classroom model. The program allows time schedules and student
groupings to vary as needed. Activities are designed to appeal to diverse interests, abilities,
and age levels. There will be no lectures, slide shows, or desks in rows. Physical activity and
mindfulness breaks occur with regular frequency. And each week culminates with students
presenting a project that addresses a real world problem that they have worked on and
gained knowledge of during the week.”
Advisors from the schools and community have had input on the program design
and will mentor students on their project prototypes. “Local artists, NAVAIR, Ocean County
College, Scouts, the Toms River Chamber of Commerce, and many others have embraced
the concepts and pledged support,” according to Natanagara. “Our kids are going to have
experiences in and with the community that they may never have had otherwise.” For example,
during the “Art and Society” week, students will practice visual, performing and digital arts
techniques, tour downtown Toms River art works and galleries, and build individual creative
pieces to share with the community.
Superintendent Healy concludes, “Innovation isn’t just about putting technology in
teacher and student hands. It’s about getting them to engage in ways they haven’t before
using tools in new and creative ways. It’s about connecting with the larger world.”

Dynamic show by local photographer showcases
New Jersey’s red fox
TOMS RIVER – Vulpes Vulpes (Red Fox), a photography
exhibit by Eric Sager, will be on exhibit in McConnell Gallery at the
Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library throughout the
month of July.
Sager is a central New Jersey-based freelance photographer
and artist. He studied Fine Arts and Film Photography at the
University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. He primarily shoots
weddings and other events, but in his free time he focuses on
photographing wildlife in any New Jersey’s many nature preserves.
This exhibit is a multi-year long journey in finding and
photographing New Jersey’s red fox. The portraits are printed on
fine artist’s watercolor paper, hand-mounted, matted and framed
with reclaimed wood by Sager.
Sager says, “I wanted to give my audience the feeling of
really being there with the foxes; to see the small, serene moments,
to be down on the ground alongside them, to share a view of them
otherwise unattainable.”
The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information,
please contact the Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library
at 732-349-6200 or visit our website at www.theoceancountylibrary.

Although Sheldon Nadelman’s subjects were often
overlooked, as well as, stepped over, his photographs often got
much attention. An acclaimed book, Terminal Bar – A Photographic
Record of New York’s Most Notorious Watering Hole and a Sundance
award winning short film documentary award, The Terminal Bar,
have both resulted from his works. Even Martin Scorcese used the
Terminal Bar in his film, Taxi Driver.
From Nadelman’s vantage point as a bartender at the
Terminal Bar at the corner of Eighth Avenue and West 41st. Street,
he shot 2600 photographs with his $85 Pentax. His works have
been the subject of a New York Times article, whose headquarters,
ironically, now stands on the former site of the bar. Taken from
1962 until 1981, his photographs have long been recognized as
historically significant.
Along with the “sooty, sticky-floored life” images taken off
the streets in front of the Terminal Bar, Nadelman is also displaying
sensitive images of the World Trade Center, pre-9/11.
A reception will be held at the Waretown Branch Library on
Monday, August 8 at 7:30 pm and it is open to the public.
These programs are free and open to the public.
