I F O R D F E S T I VA L 2015 6 June – 8 August 2015 www.ifordarts.org.uk “Pure Magic, as though each performance is being enacted entirely for your personal benefit” RUPERT CHRISTIANSEN, THE TELEGR APH IFORD ARTS 2015 Performance Diary W ELCO M E If you haven’t visited Iford now is the time to organise it. It’s about six miles south east of Bath at BA15 2BA. People come from all over the world to be captivated by the famous Peto garden, and some very lucky ones get to be there on a summer evening. The Iford Festival is all about the secret setting and the otherworldly atmosphere of the Peto garden at Iford Manor and its enchanting buildings. With its recreated rose garden and the breathtaking newly planted long border, it’s particularly magical in the slanting light of a summer evening. Bring a picnic and, maybe, some friends and share the jewel-like experience of a concert, or our core activity: one or more of three unique, site specific new opera productions in-the-round in the intimate Italianate cloister. Or if you fancy something less highbrow come here for a party. Spread yourselves on the lawns at one of our three Proms, and visit informal performances of jazz, swing and fusion music alternating at either end of the garden. You will enjoy our welcoming and informal atmosphere, which combined with national and international musicians of the very highest calibre in every genre, creates a magical experience. Artists love performing at Iford, and their shows, together with the sheer beauty of the venue will probably blow your mind. You may become addicted. The award-winning garden and its intimate and unique performance spaces combine to create a magical experience. IFORD ARTS 2015 In this captivating setting, opera performances in English are staged in-the-round for an audience of 90 in the miniature Italianate cloister. “the most enchanting of summer festivals, Iford Arts” — Anna Picard, The Independent Popular and informal free flowing promenades, together with seated cloister concerts, complete the festival programme. All events offer a chance to relax over a pre-show picnic, whilst enjoying the peaceful tranquility of the Peto garden as the river Frome gently meanders through the Iford valley. Visit ifordarts.org.uk for information about 3-to-Tea and other amateur performances, free with garden entry. 4 OPERA IFORD ARTS 2015 U N BA LLO I N M ASCH ER A The Masked Ball ORPHEUS IN THE U N D ERWO RLD Giuseppe Verdi Orphée aux Enfers Jacques Offenbach Original libretto by Eugène Scribe adapted by Antonio Somma Sung in English in translation by Graham Billing Orchestration by Francis Griffin Conductor: Oliver Gooch Director/Designer: Timothy Nelson A NEW IFORD ARTS OPERA PRODUCTION CHROMA Chamber Ensemble June 6, 9, 12, 13, 16, 19, 20 An ominous love triangle sits at the heart of this marvellous opera. Riccardo is a popular ‘people’s premier’; Amelia is helplessly in love with him; Renato is Riccardo’s loyal right-hand man – and also Amelia’s husband. We are in the intense world of power politics, swirling with compelling counter currents. As we follow the dramatic storyline from conspiracy to clairvoyance and from love to loathing, intriguing themes and secondary characters emerge before the final sensational Masked Ball scene. Verdi’s music for Ballo in Maschera, with the incandescent love duet at its core, is beautiful beyond description, expressing profound emotion yet always tuneful. As relevant today as the day it was written, the opera is Shakespearian in its scope and, though ultimately tragic, is also somehow shot through with humour and pervaded by a mysterious aura of gaiety. The talented young stage director Tim Nelson, an awardee in the Opera Europa International Directing Prize, makes his Iford debut, joining Iford’s renowned Music Director, Oliver Gooch and the ever-more-acclaimed CHROMA Ensemble. TICKETS £113 (Mon-Fri) £117 (Sat) Performances start at 7.30pm Garden opens at 6pm for picnics Original libretto by Ludovic Halévy, revised by Hector-Jonathan Cremieux Sung in English English version by Jeff Clarke Orchestra of Opera della Luna A NEW OPERA DELLA LUNA PRODUCTION Conductor: Toby Purser Director: Jeff Clarke Designer: Nigel Howard June 27 July 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10 “A profanation of holy and glorious antiquity. A desecration of the gods!” That’s how one outraged critic greeted the first performance of Orphée aux Enfers in 1858. But Offenbach and his librettists were not so much desecrating ancient Greece as their own bourgeois society. All Paris flocked to the tiny Bouffes-Parisiens to see it. Its waltzes and galops were played constantly from the Tuileries to the smallest taverns; the infantry even marched to its tunes. And of course the Galop Infernal or Cancan became one of the most famous dance tunes ever-written. For the last in its operas comiques for Iford, Opera della Luna will assemble a company of multi-talented singers, comedians and dancers to stage Offenbach’s most celebrated work. Jeff Clarke’s new translation casts a satirical eye on our own society in much the same way that Offenbach’s original lambasted second Empire Paris. TICKETS £113 (Mon-Fri) £117 (Sat) Performances start at 7.30pm Garden opens at 6pm for picnics 6 6 7 OPERA IFORD ARTS 2015 AG R I P P I N A George Frideric Handel Libretto by Vincenzo Grimani Sung in English in translation by Christopher Cowell Conductor: Led from the Harpsichord by Christopher Bucknall Director: Bruno Ravella Designer: Kimm Kovac A NEW IFORD ARTS OPERA PRODUCTION Iford Baroque Period Orchestra July 25, 29, 31 Aug 1, 4, 5 The setting is Rome around 43 AD – or maybe any seat of despotic power – where the prizes are huge and ripe for the picking. Agrippina is the mother of Nero. She believes that she can persuade her husband, the Emperor Claudius, to nominate Nero, his young stepson as his successor on the imperial throne. She will stop at nothing, including murder, to safeguard her son’s future reign. We lift the lid on life inside the Palace and take a sly look at Agrippina’s masterly manoeuvres as she works out how to do it. One of the best libretti Handel ever set, this is a wonderful comedy based on historical events. Cocking a snoop at establishment authority, Agrippina deftly satirises the vanities and greed of those who lust for dominance, revels in the power struggle between husband and wife; and in particular the machinations between Agrippina and her rival, the delicious sex kitten, Poppea. With an array of well-developed, famous and funny characters, it descends into something approaching bedroom farce in the climactic scene when Poppea conceals her three would-be lovers separately around her bedroom. The infectious music is typical of Handel’s Italian period: endlessly inventive and full of melting melody in an easy, relaxed style. A strong new creative team of Christopher Bucknall (his Iford debut), Bruno Ravella (whose Traviata all will remember) and designer Kimm Kovac (Ulysses in 2014) makes it imperative as Hugh Canning from The Sunday Times has famously recommended, to be there like a shot. A lively evening’s entertainment with The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band, a seven piece Jump Blues and vintage Jazz band who’ve delighted audiences in venues as diverse as Glastonbury and Ronnie Scott’s. Led by irrepressible singer/pianist Stuart Macbeth they’ll be celebrating musical heroes including Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan, Sidney Bechet and Billie Holiday alongside their own brand of upbeat, “Jump Steady” Jazz. The band were formed as a real “spasm” band in 2006, paying homage to the likes of Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey (from whose Rabbit Foot Minstrels they take their name) and have now swelled to a dynamic seven piece which also includes Martin Martello (trumpet and trombone), Red Wilkins (clarinet and tenor sax), Chuck Lloyd (alto and baritone sax) and Carlo Matassa (guitar) alongside a rhythm section of Buzz Booker (bass) and “Skippy” Gannon on drums. In a new show our very own Queen of Swing celebrates more of the music of her heroines, the leading lights of the jazz and big band world, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Doris Day and many of their illustrious contemporaries. “ Probably the most exciting live band on the circuit today” The Oxford Times “ This band is so good for you they should be prescribed on the NHS” BBC Oxford “ The authentic sound of New Orleans. Known for her knowledge and love of the Great American Songbook and more recently The Great British Songbook, with wit and warmth, Clare tells outrageous anecdotes of their extraordinary lives and points to the future of Diva-dom with a few relevant originals and more modern day covers. A not to be missed evening of Feel Good music, inspired by the greats and played by the best. “ In terms of sheer ability and potential, Jason is probably the finest young jazz musician this country has produced. His playing has great poise and maturity, which is unusual in somebody so young.” Stuart Nicholson, author Jazz: The Modern Resurgence “ Clare has a timeless sound to her voice and classic touch and sound to her own songwriting. Now how modern is that? Music to melt to I’d say.” Jamie Cullum “ The new first lady of Jazz” Independent Music, entertainment and cocktails in the beautiful Italianate cloister add a new element to our middle prom this year. It’s been an incredible journey for the London-based artist, from falling in love with the harp aged six to a school music scholarship and becoming the first harpist in the National Children’s Orchestra. She’s also done stints performing at hotels, she became a session harpist and backing singer in-demand for stars including Rufus Wainwright, Annie Lennox and Robbie Williams. All this led to a £1m record deal in 2010 with Universal and a spot on the Radio 2 playlist with the Lucinda Belle Orchestra’s acclaimed album My Harp & 45 Strings. It’s all been essential in leading to where Lucinda is today. “ A sultry tone, seducing the audience with a gently brazen charm” The Times lucindabelle.com Casita CABLE STREET COLLECTIVE Cable Street Collective combine catchy tunes with dance-inspired beats that’ll make you dance your socks off. Their music mixes African influences (two of the group grew up in Swaziland and Malawi) with UK funky house and a whole host of other sounds from in and around their home bases in East London and Brixton. They’ve just released their debut EP, The Best of Times and enjoyed airtime on XFM. They've also played at a series of high profile festivals including Bestival, the Isle of Wight Festival, Secret Garden Party and Boomtown Fair. “ Their music is guaranteed to bring the sunshine, whatever the weather.” XFM’s new music guru John Kennedy cablestreetcollective.co.uk T H E R E W I L L B E A B A R AT T H I S E V E N T 12 YOUNG IFORD ARTISTS IFORD ARTS 2015 CONCERTS I F O R D YO U N G A R T I S T S C O N C E R T with Oliver Gooch Sunday 7 June 2015 Tickets £30 Popular operatic arias and ensembles 6.15pm and 8.30pm Garden opens for picnics at 5.30pm (for both performances) We are proud to present our Young Artists in a concert of well-loved operatic arias and ensembles, curated and accompanied on piano by Oliver Gooch, Iford Arts Music Director.
