—JOE REITER TOASTS OUR FEST—
In 2016 at the Oktoberfest at the
German Hungarians our Master of
Ceremonies for the weekend Joe
Reiter shared a toast to our fest.
He originally composed the below
words for our Kirchweihfest. We
share the toast below with you in
celebration of the great Oktoberfest we had this year and in excitement for the great KIRCHWEIHFEST
we have coming in November!
Our traditions came from lands
far away, To preserve them is
why we are here today.
We are here to celebrate our
traditions both present and
past, In hopes that for generations to come, they will last.
You have all been invited here
for this day of jubilation,
A heartfelt thank you to each
of you for joining
in our celebration.
As tradition calls for I ask each
of you to raise you glasses in
this toast, Cheers und danke
Schoen, Zum Wohl und Prost!

OCTOBER 2016
My parents immigrated to the United States in 1922 and I was not born until
1937. They loved being Americans and they became citizens as soon as they
were legally permitted. But they were also proud of being “Schwoowe.” They
were not members of any German Club but each year we attended as many
Kirchweihfests as possible. As I recall the United German Hungarians had two,
an Allgemeine, which took place at their country home in Neshaminy Falls and
the Bogarosher, which took place in the city club. The Sacred Heart Church at
Master and Masher Streets also had two, held in their hall on Germantown Avenue, - also an Allgemeine and a Botscharer. The Gewerbe Gesang Verein on Second Street near
Lehigh Ave. also had two, an Allgemeine and a St. Andreaser. And there was a German Hungarian
Club in Hilltown, (which still exists) and also had a Kirchweih. Our German Hungarian Sport Club
danced at all these except at the Gewerbe although there was a time when we danced there too.
There may have been more but this is all I can recollect.
My father was a great story teller and he never ceased to talk about the village where he grew up
and what went on in this village and the other villages around them. I didn’t become a member of
the German Hungarian Sport Club until 1954 and my parents probably didn’t become members until
the mid 60s or early 70s. As a young child, a teenager and a young married woman, I learned to love
the Kirchweih Celebration.
Our club is the only club in our general area that still celebrates the Banater Kirchweihfest.
However, if you search on Google on your computer you will find that there are many cities in the
United States that also celebrate this festival. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 4)

We’ve been so busy during the summer,
that we did not have much time to report
the many happenings of our members. Unfortunately, many of you do not notify us of
these happenings so we can only report
about the happenings of our families and
friends. So here goes:
Eddie Galgon, son of Bill Galgon and Sue
Mueller Galgon, married Jodie Crouthamel
on June 17th while Eddie’s cousin Jocelyn
Galgon, daughter of Fred and Susan Galgon,
married Chris Pinney. Jocelyn was a member
of our Children Dancers and Eddie still dances with us when we need him. We wish both
these couples Congratulations and much
happiness.
Congratulations to Betty and Michael
Wagner who recently celebrated their 40th
Wedding Anniversary with a surprise party
given by their children, Erik and Stephanie
and their families. Michael has been involved in our club since he joined the dance
group in 1965. He has served on our Executive Board for many years and presently
serves as Treasurer. Betty helps us whenever possible. We congratulate this fine couple.
Many of our friends have been ill and are
thankfully better. Joe S. Reiter had neck/
throat surgery and wore a neck brace for a
while but he is fine now. Christopher Deely,
age 7, had leg surgery and all went better
than expected however while clowning
around with his dad, Chris, at the Oktoberfest, they both fell and unfortunately, Christopher hurt his foot. He is OK and will soon
be totally well. Peter Piskei who we mentioned was ill a few months ago, is better and
we wish him well, however his wife, Kathi, is
not well and we certainly wish her the very
best and hope that soon they will both be
able to come to the club. Both Joe Hartmann and his wife Anna fell (not together
but a few weeks apart). Joe hurt his face and
is fine now and Anna spent a short time in
the Hospital as she was bruised slightly. We
wish Liz Brenner the best with her recent
back operation at Abington Hospital. I’m
sure her husband, Steve, and their children,
Lisa and Steve and their families will take
good care of Liz. Now, Liz remember, when
you are fully recovered, we expect to see you
at the club a lot more than we did in the recent past. Joe Proll (the senior) fell recently
and broke his hip. He has been taking it easy
for a while and we hope to see him soon.

Our college kids have all gone back to
school and I guess we wont see them again
until the Kirchweihfest in November. I’m
sure many of them had great vacations. Mikaela Malofiy visited her roommates at
their home near Seattle, Washington. They
all go to college and play soccer for Widener.
Mikaela said Washington was a beautiful
state and she had a great time.
Your editor, Michael Fricker, also spent time
in Washington state with Allyssa Schulz. They
also had a great time!
Our deepest sympathy to Eddie Brosz and
his wife Annette on the passing of Ed’s sister,
Gertrud Feil. Trudy died in September at
the Masonic Village in Lafayette Hills. She
was 77 years of age and born in Forberg,
Slovakia. She was a resident of the Masonic
Village for the past ten years having previously lived in Richboro and Ivyland. She was
a self-employed hairdresser and a member
of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in
Southampton and a member of our club.
She enjoyed traveling with her late husband
Helmut visiting his family in Germany often.
Trudy and Helmut were married for 47 years
before his death in 2004.
Anny David and her family, Karen, Raman
and Anika spent some time visiting various
areas of Germany. The special occasion that
took them to Germany was the 90th Birthday of Any’s Brother. We met him a few
years ago when his family traveled with us to
the Gaufest. We wish him the best.
We hope all our members had a great
summer and we hope to see you all at the
Kirchweihfest in November, if not sooner!

—MY FAMILY WAS IN TRENTON—
I was on the way home from the Trenton
Donauschwaben this weekend and I had to
stop to capture this feeling I had. So I took
out my phone and opened a new note and I

I grew up with a lot of family. My club is,

those shoulders to cry on are and those people to hug, share a drink and a meal with go.
I never had a best friend. I had a brother, a

As I grow up I share more into a group and
a subculture I belong in. All of the people I
mentioned before take part in that group.
They make it what it is. I’ve met people all
over the United States that have clubs, and
families like mine. We celebrate and we celebrate often. (Some might say too much, but
we like it that way.) We celebrate together,
and sometimes there is one night that happens when the food is just right, the music

—PK FUNDRAISER IS BACK—
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2)
The PK is a fun family night – all are welcome to participate in the challenge – from
age 3 on up! Bar is open and food is available
for purchase. The Philadelphia Union will be
in the house with their inflatables for the
“losers” to enjoy. Matthew has worked very
hard for the last year writing more letters
than ever outreaching to our community and
soccer supporters all in effort to improve our
fields and equipment for the soccer program.
He has a host of sponsors lined up – along
with an AWESOME lineup of Goalkeepers.
The Philadelphia Union is supporting this
event once again and will be sending one of
their secret weapons – along with our own
German Hungarian superstars. Lineup includes Ike Onyeador of Philadelphia Fury,
Stevie Paul of Philadelphia University, Joey
Phillips of the German Hungarians 2005 Boys,
Tommy Kalita for the 9 and under age group,
and another goalie to who’s name needs to
be kept secret!
We have professional players that will be
at the event to mingle with the crowd – Ryan
Richter of New York Cosmos and Johnny Murray. Bring your ball and permanent marker
and ask for autographs!
The top 5 finishers will win a Butterball
Turkey courtesy of Shop Rite (just in time for
Thanksgiving) and the top 3 winners will receive their PK medals and will take the stand
on the German Hungarian Award podium.
Competing in this Fundraiser has proven to
be lots of fun and a good time for all!
Red Bull, Shop Rite and Red Bull are our
top line sponsors supporting this event this
year. Whistle blows for the PK at 7pm sharp –
don’t miss it!
