We’ve got an amazing team of volunteers and generous supporters and this was a wonderful opportunity for us to say thank you to everyone”. Hayley Williams, the charity’s Retail Area Manager, said: “Since the shop opened in February 2015, nearly 25,000 items have been sold and over 70 bags of donations are made per week to the shop. We’d really like to thank the local community for their kind generosity and support”. Worthing Chestnut Tree House Shop A message from Jan Harper, Head of Retail: “It is with regret that I am informing you that we have recently moved out of our Chestnut Tree House shop in Montague Street Worthing. Unfortunately our lease on the premises expired at the end of February and we were unfortunately unable to negotiate a new lease with the Landlords due to a significant increase in rent. I am delighted to announce that the fantastic Bridal Department that Shop Manager Linda Abraham and her team put so much effort into has been relocated to the first floor at our St Barnabas Shop in Rowlands Road, Worthing and will be opening on Wednesday 2 March. The teams at Rowlands Road and Montague Street have been very busy during the move, and have been helped out by the Van drivers along with all the team from the Warehouse. I would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work during this time. I am very grateful to volunteers, staff and customers who supported the shop on Montague Street. Looking ahead, we are actively looking for new shop premises in Worthing and we are optimistic that we can find one that is even better. Linda and her team look forward to welcoming customers to the newly relocated Bridal Department at the Rowlands Road shop.” VOLUNTEER CELEBRATION EVENTS FOR 2016 Over the past few years, some of our wonderful St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House volunteers have enjoyed the annual event for volunteers at the Charmandean Centre in Worthing. This year we are making some changes and holding a range of different new events for volunteers to maximise attendance and offer choice. If you are a volunteer for Chestnut Tree House – at the hospice, in our shops, fundraising or CTH Friends Groups – you will receive an invitation to a choice of gatherings held on different dates at the end of May/early June. These will be in different locations - at Chestnut Tree House, in Chichester and in Eastbourne. We hope that a date and location will be convenient for you. The purpose of the CTH volunteer events is to say thank you, to celebrate the contribution of volunteers to our children’s hospice, to present some long-service badges and to talk about future plans for Chestnut Tree House. Invitations will be sent after Easter to all CTH volunteers and shop sites and below are the confirmed dates for CTH volunteer events in 2016. Eastbourne – Cumberland Hotel – Thursday 26 May at 6pm-8pm Chestnut Tree House Chichester – The Fishbourne Centre, Blackboy Lane, Fishbourne – Thursday 2 June 6pm-8pm Chestnut Tree House – Tuesday 14 June, three events at 3pm or 4.30pm or 6pm (guests choose) Can you believe we have been in our new building on Titnore Lane for five years?! To celebrate this milestone and to recognise all that you do for us as a volunteer for St Barnabas House, we would like to invite you to the hospice to say ‘thank you’ and share our new plans for St Barnabas House over the next 5 years. St Barnabas House reach many more people in our community – there will be a short presentation and an opportunity to ask questions relating to this. We will present some long service badges, there will be refreshments available and time for you to meet and chat to other fellow volunteers and staff. We also expect that our new Chairman, Derwyn Jones, and other Trustees will be able to attend some of the events to meet volunteers. St Barnabas House volunteers – at the hospice, in our care services, Community Companions, in our shops, fundraising or STB Friends Groups – will all be invited to a choice of gatherings over the summer at the hospice. We expect to offer at least six dates on various days and at different times to maximise attendance - each event will be for around 50 volunteers and will be informal style. We appreciate that many of you have enjoyed the annual Volunteer Celebration Evening at the Charmandean but this year we wanted to reach as many of you as possible with a different kind of event - you are all important ambassadors for the hospice. We really do value your contribution and feel this is great way for us all to go forward together and strive to make St Barnabas House care services accessible to many more people who could benefit from our care and support. We do hope you can join us to celebrate your voluntary contribution and how you enable us to give such excellent care and face the future with such ambitious goals. I can hear you thinking, what does this look like, why should I go? The hospice is about to launch an ambitious range of new services: we would like to share our plans for the future and how we aim to You will receive an invitation letter from Voluntary Services with a list of the dates for each hospice. Chestnut Tree House volunteers will receive this during April and St Barnabas House invites will go out during May. Those who volunteer for both hospices, will receive both invitations. You will be asked to inform Voluntary Services of your choice of event. We hope that many of you will take this opportunity to visit the hospice that you so passionately support. Introducing our new HR Director Here Gillian Brennan, HR Director for St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House, talks about her first month in her new role. “Hi, I am Gillian Brennan and I am nearing the end of my first four weeks. Being new to the world of hospices and charity, I have been bowled over by everyone’s patience and willingness to share with me about their roles and what it is like to work for St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House. I was thrilled to have been offered this role and put in charge of all things to do with people and I have been so warmed by the welcome I have received from you and am looking forward to getting down to some real work now that my induction is nearing completion. I have not yet met everyone and being a bit pathetic around blood I am slightly anxious about visiting the clinical teams, but I have been offered a ward round so hopefully I will meet more of you soon. I am also hoping to stay into the evening to meet those of you who are on late shift. I have been out and about to some of our wonderful charity shops and now sport a set of fabulous beads and scarf I bought along the way! I have also been talking with our volunteers and again have been amazed at just how many of you offer your time in so many different areas of the organisation, and I must say the cakes in our coffee shops are irresistible! I have received a lot of constructive feedback, and I have been taking on board both the good and bad points that have been raised. This has been very helpful and I will continue to listen to what you think and what we can do to support you further. Points raised include the fact that HR Select is not working for support we will soon be making a difference. I have had a lot of experience working in people teams across Training and Development, Reward, Recruitment and Process Administration and I have also worked a stint in Facilities. I left Virgin Holidays in January this year, having worked there for 10 years. I have also been lucky enough to work in Guernsey where I was Director of HR for Specsavers and prior to that I lived in Johannesburg working for Deloitte in the Audit Division focusing on supporting young black students through university and their graduate scheme placements. Originally I had started life as a High School Teacher having always wanted to work with young people but this morphed in to loving working with people. everyone and that working out annual leave can be a difficult task. I also know it’s not easy to find our forms and policies, and things take too long to wend their way through the various processes. With these and your other feedback in mind I will be working with my team to look at how we can improve the situation. I think there is a challenge ahead of me but I love a challenge and I know if I continue to get your honest feedback alongside your offers of I passionately believe good people are at the heart of good organisations and that my role is to support the business through good people strategies and concrete measurable goals and plans. My role is to ensure we have the right people (both staff and volunteers), in the right roles, who with the right support guidance and development are in the centre of delivering the incredible care I see round me today.” Th an ks, Gillia n News from Retail Thank you Jackie! Title A big thank you to one of our Durrington shop volunteers, Jackie Caswell, who has been helping out at the shop for over 13 years. Jackie has recently renovated a dolls house to sell in the shop to raise funds for St Barnabas House. Head of Retail, Jan Harper said: “We’d get nowhere without our amazing teams of volunteers both in the shops and in our warehouse. This is a great example of the ingenuity and skills they bring. Many thanks to Jackie and to all of our retail volunteers”. Our Uckfiel d Shop has a new look! Our Uckfield shop’s retail contribution to Chestnut Tree House has doubled in the last year and to keep the momentum going we have put up a new sign to bring the shop into line with all of our other Chestnut Tree House shops. Pictured below right, Georgie Goddard, Chestnut Tree House Community Fundraiser for Brighton and Hove, is celebrating her first year in the team. Here she shares a few insights and anecdotes about her endeavours so far, and some of the wonderful fundraisers she has met along the way, including the amazing “Mermamas”. Read on to find out more… “Since joining the team in February 2015, no two days have been the same! Just a year into this role, working for this amazing organisation, I am forever bowled-over by people’s generosity, enthusiasm and passion in helping us to raise vital funds for the children we support. I have also been amazed by the variety of innovative ideas that people come up with to raise money. Seldom has a day gone by without an individual or group contacting us with their fundraising ideas. There is much camaraderie and friendly competing among our team to get involved with the more extravagant and exciting fundraising ideas that come our way. So when a group of passionate young mums contacted me to say they were training for a challenging cross channel swim relay in the summer of 2015 I was absolutely delighted. The group of daring swimmers are Lou Murie, Cindy kay, Rebecca Habba,Victoria Nixon, Caroline Casswell, Jo Phillimore, and reserve swimmer / support merman Jon Kay. Jon shared with me their training schedule (which looked, frankly, pretty gruelling, bearing in mind all the women have demanding jobs and young children), and some of the other innovative fundraising ideas they had up their sleeves involving school events in Brighton and Hove . Prior to the swim some of the Mermamas were given the opportunity to visit Chestnut Tree House. They said the visit and in-depth knowledge about the hospice really helped to keep them motivated through the cold, all weather swimmingtraining, and the thought of jellyfish infested waters! It was touching indeed to meet the team and to see the support and friendship they offered each other. Following their amazing swim on a wet, grey October day they have raised a huge amount of money – just under £18,000 – enough to pay for over 60 hours of all our care services, both at the House and in families’ own homes. They have also helped to raise awareness of Chestnut Tree House. Now when I visit schools in the city, invariably a child tells me that they know about our work because of the Mermamas or a small hand will be raised in an assembly to tell me proudly that their mum is a Mermama. I feel very privileged to have met these amazing women, and the many other wonderful and inspiring fundraisers from Brighton and Hove who approach Chestnut Tree House wanting to support us. It is really amazing to help them to achieve their goals, and I would like to Jane Martin, our g Co- thank my wonderful colleagues for their support Brighton Marketin during my first year at Chestnut Tree House. tnut ordinator for Ches Tree House Georgie, February 2016 Georgie Goddard, Chestnut Tree House Community Fundraise r for Brighton and Hove Big Heart Auction took The first satellite exhibition for the y in Chichester from place at the Candida Stevens Galler ry. Claire Dinning has been Bank Care Support Worker at Chestnut Tree for a year and a half. “I started working at Chestnut Tree House to gain experience for my student nursing course. It’s such a nice place to work, meeting all the different children and coming up with fun activities.” Jo Hill has been a Fundraising Volunteer at Chestnut Tree for 12 Years. “ I just love coming to Chestnut Tree House and doing what I can to help. I feel so proud when I see what has been achieved. It’s all just so worthwhile.” Dennis Say has been a Garden Volunteer at St Bs for ten months. “I love the camaraderie here. I always come up on a Thursday and get to meet new people who I wouldn’t have known otherwise. It’s a great friendly team here. People get the wrong perception that because it’s a hospice it’s depressing, but it’s a great atmosphere.” “ Variety is the spice of life! This role incorporates such a diverse range of activities, and brings with it a real sense of contribution to the Community Fundraising effort.” Jayne Barker is a Registered, General and Mental Health Nurse. Shas been Staff Nurse at St Barnabas for a year in the Day Hospice and IPU. “I was working in dementia but I wanted to work in an area where I could use both of my qualifications. The best thing about working here is the high level of input you can give to the patients. We have a really strong and supportive team as well.” Maura Foster has been a Volunteer at St Barnabas for an incredible 21 years. Every week she does a shift in the coffee shop, Day Hospice and Finance Office. “The thing I always say to people when they ask why I do this is, you get far more out of it than you put in.” If you would like to feature on our Facebook ‘Photo-Friday’ please contact Jayne Todd - [email protected] / Tel: 01903 706310 Events Volunteers In Action... Meet Volunteer Andy Thornton... “I became a volunteer for Chestnut Tree and St Barnabas really by chance. I used to accompany my wife at CTH fundraising events, and became aware how hard the fundraisers work to raise the funds needed to look after these desperately ill children. I used to work in the aircraft industry and flew and maintained a private jet, for a very wealthy Middle Eastern family. It made me realise how little individuals seem to ‘put back’ into society for the greater good of all, without looking for some personal financial gain. So when I retired two years ago, I decided that if I could do nothing else I would give up my time and help any way I could. I let the hospice know I was available for whatever task they needed help with, and in the last 2 years I have manufactured tombola drums, lollipop holders and taken on the role of Collection tin Co-ordinator and deliver fundraising materials to supporters. I am also very proud, and relieved, that my bathtub raft stayed afloat with the CTH team aboard, at the Arun Bath Tub Race a couple of years ago! I have now met many like-minded people at all the fundraising events I have helped at, and it is evident that without the volunteers help, neither CTH or STB would be able to give the level of care it does to its patients. It is a good feeling to know that by volunteering we have saved the organisation money which is better spent elsewhere and I feel privileged to be able to give something to such a worthwhile charity and I love wearing my bright yellow t-shirt!” A n dy Andy at the Lindfield Village Day South Downs Trek Volunteers Gantry Volunteers Eric and Neil pictured below at the South Downs Trek for St Barnabas House in October 2015. He wanted to volunteer to repay an “unpayable” debt to the hospice and said that the volunteering gives him something really worthwhile to do with his time and gives him something positive to focus on. Eric said: “The work St Barnabas does is phenomenal.” Neil Aspinall is 46 from Worthing. He volunteers as a way of saying: “Thank you,” to St Barnabas, for caring for his mother, and for their amazing help and support. Volunteers we need you...
