Tanabata is a Japanese star festival which celebrates the meeting of the
deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair).
According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are
allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar
month. In present-day Japan, people celebrate this day by writing wishes,
sometimes in the form of poetry, on tanzaku (短冊), small pieces of paper,
and hanging them on bamboo a “wish tree.”

UPCOMING EVENTS
Japanese Language School
Fall Semester will start on September 8th (Mon).
Luncheon Sunday July 20th: Tanabata Festival
We will again observe the Tanabata or the Star Festival, celebrating the Cow
Herder Star (Altair) and Weaver Star (Vega), lovers separated by the Milky Way
who are allowed to meet just once a year. We will have yakitori, takoyaki, onigiri,
yakisoba and cucumber & harusame salad. Our Kamishibai Theater will be used
to tell the story of the star-crossed lovers.
Japan-American Friendship Night at Ranger’s Ballpark – Thurs. Aug. 14th
Once again, the Texas Rangers will celebrate the friendly relationship between
Japan and America. The Rangers will be playing the Tampa Bay Rays, starting at
7:05PM, but you should arrive by 6:15 to be able to see some of the events
planned for this evening. The price of the tickets are $23.00 each ($34.00 Lower
Reserved seats discounted to $23.00). If there are enough people going, we can
put a bus together for an additional cost of $27.00 per person, for a total cost of
$50.00 per person. If you are interested in going to see the ball game, please

Japanese American National Museum (JANM) – Friday Aug. 15th
Dr. Greg Kimura, President and CEO of JANM will visit Fort Worth and Dallas
from August 14th to 16th. JANM, located in the Little Tokyo area of Los Angeles,
has a permanent exhibition of the Japanese internment during WW II and artifacts
from Japanese-Americans (JA’s) who fought in the U.S. military in that same war.
They also have exhibits on contemporary contributions by JA’s and Japanese in
America. The presentation and reception will be on Friday Aug. 15th at about
6:00PM and will take place at the Kimbell Museum so if you are interested in
learning more about this very important museum, please RSVP to Harvey at
[email protected] or at 817-737-9166.
Luncheon Sunday Sept. 21st – Dr. Ted Takata
A respected cardiologist in Fort Worth, Japanese-American Ted Takata will talk
about health issues. His youth and enthusiasm will likely help us to be more
engaged in leading a healthier lifestyle. We will be serving Hiyashi Chuka Soba
and ice cream sundaes. $12 for adults, $8.00 for children 8 – 12, free for children
7 and under.

May Luncheon: Tea Ceremony
What a treat we had when the DFW Urasenke
Tankōkai group demonstrated the Japanese Tea
Ceremony. They brought in tatami flooring (very
thick straw mats used as flooring in the traditional
Japanese home) and shoji screens to provide an
authentic tea ceremony experience. Many of us
then enjoyed partaking of the macha (tea) and
okashi (confectionary). The food for the luncheon
was potluck, which is always delicious because
members bring their favorite dished.
Dr. Matthew Perry
Dr. Perry, a direct descendent of Commodore
Perry, spoke to a large audience at the Benbrook
Library. Commodore Perry has been credited as
the single most important person to persuade the
Japanese in 1853 to open their ports to the
international community. What followed is history
from friend in WW I, adversary in WWII and now
the strongest of allies in the 21st century.
Editor’s Note: My apologies for the error on the
date in our last newsletter. Many of you showed
up on the wrong date, but still returned on the
correct date, June 6th.
Kimbell Art Museum: Matsuri! A Samurai
Celebration
Hundreds of people came to the Kimbell’s
celebration of the Japanese Samurai, even guests
from Fort Worth’s Sister City, Nagaoka, Japan –
Mssrs. Takano and Kawauchi. In addition to
performances by our Dondoko Taiko Drummers
and Sakura Dancers, we had over 30 volunteers
carry the Mikoshi Shrine along the grassy plaza
between the two buildings of the Kimbell Museum.
Sensei Makio Nishida, in his instructive, but always
humorous manner, trained everyone quickly on
how to properly carry the Mikoshi and chant
rhythmically and in unison. Over the course of the
celebration, from 1:00PM to 10:00PM, nearly
10,000 people came to the celebration.
