Q: My great-granddad
was from Italy and a great
opera lover. When he
immigrated to the United
States, he brought along
about three dozen recordings, including two Zonophone discs by Enrico
Caruso. I read in one of
your recent columns that
Caruso’s American Victor
Real Seal recordings are
fairly common and not
worth that much. What
about the Zonophones?
— A Reader in Kissimmee, Fla.
A: You are correct about
the Caruso Red Seals.
Most sell in the $5 to $25
range, pending on rarity
and condition. Caruso,
probably the most legendary classical tenor
who ever lived, was born
in Naples in 1873. He
made his operatic debut
in 1894 and after establishing his singing chops
in Europe, arrived in the
United States in 1902
where he began a long
association with the New
York Metropolitan Opera.
His first major recording
in the U.S. was “Vesti La
Glubba” from “I Pagliacci,” cut in 1904 at the Victor studios. It charted as
the best-selling recording
in the country that May.
Caruso made only a few
Zonophone recordings.
Since they are scarce,
they also are expensive.
Several have sold in the
$5,000 to $10,000 range.

Like the fish and game we passionately pursue, outdoorsmen and women have some of their own interesting habits, if you observe their behavior closely.
One is they are very willing to get in their vehicles
and travel many miles to spend time in a productive
location. Another is their lifelong desire to continuously learn new things that can make their time
afield more rewarding and enjoyable. Well, sportsmen and women will have the opportunity to do both
by taking a road trip to the upcoming 29th annual Allegheny Sport, Travel, & Outdoor Show, which runs
Wednesday, February 12th through Sunday, February 16th, 2014 at the Monroeville Convention Center
in Monroeville (Allegheny County), PA, adjacent to
the expansive Monroeville Mall.
Conveniently located off Exit 57 (Pittsburgh) of
the PA Turnpike, the Allegheny Sport, Travel, &
Outdoor Show is the premier outdoor exposition in
Western PA and only a 60 to 90 minute drive from
throughout the Weekly Bargain Bulletin’s distribution area. With hundreds of displays and dozens of
demonstrations, there is something to interest all
hunting, fishing, camping, and outdoor enthusiasts
and to make it well worth the travel for you and your
family members or a few friends. Cabin fever can
get pretty intense in February, so the opportunity
to get out and see the latest in outdoor equipment,
possibly book that outdoor “trip of a lifetime”, learn
something new, or purchase some reasonably-priced
needed gear will come as a welcome respite to the

Pirate fan favorites: Bob Walk (Feb 14th), Sid Bream

Cornelius [was] a devout man and one who
feared God with all his household. —Acts 10:1-2
A prominent senator was dropped from the
“Green Book”—the list of Washington societal
elite who are invited to special functions. Why?
Because he never attended the events. Instead,
he went home each night to be with his family.
Then he discovered he had cancer. A difficult
career choice faced him. The night before he announced his decision not to run for office again,
he said to his wife, “You know, the only thing I’ll
probably ever be remembered for is that I loved
my wife.” To which she replied, “And what’s
wrong with that?”
Families that are built on love, respect, and togetherness instead of social climbing or the pursuit of successful careers are a nation’s hope for
survival. And when their values reflect a love for
Jesus Christ, they hold a special place in God’s
plan for the world.
Cornelius was a Roman soldier who feared God
even before he came to know Christ. God used
him to spread the gospel to the Gentiles (Acts
10:24-48). Rome could have used more families
like his.
God-fearing families provide stability to individuals and nations when adversity strikes. And
there’s everything right about that.
Think About It: How do strong families
provide stability for a nation? Did my parents
teach me about Christ? How can I be a godly
influence in my family? My nation?
A nation is only as strong its families.

CHICKEN POT PIE
Butter for greasing pan
1 lb. cooked chicken breast, cut into cubes
1 (1 lb.) pkg. frozen peas, carrots and corn
vegetable mix, thawed
2/3 C. prepared Alfredo sauce
1/2 C. milk
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
1 prepared refrigerated pie dough

Preheat oven to 425 F. Grease a 9” pie pan with
butter. Place chicken and vegetables in a medium
bowl. Add Alfredo sauce, milk and pepper, stirring
to combine. Pour mixture into prepared pie pan.
Carefully unroll pie dough and place over chicken
mixture. Press and crimp edges against pie pan.
Place pie pan on a baking sheet to catch any drips.
Bake until top is golden brown and inside is hot
and bubbly, about 45 minutes. Remove from heat
and let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Yield:
