ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com The Sunday Video: Eye Sore by Alexandra Kuechenberg Sunday, December 20, 2009 http://www.artlurker.com/2009/12/the-sunday-video-eye-sore-by-alexandra-kuechenberg/ This weeks Sunday Video is an animation by Alexandra Kuechenberg made in After Effects. "I find it very interesting to play with 2d images in a virtual 3d environment." Says Kuechenberg. "I want to continue to explore the place where “fabricated” dimension meets “physical” dimension. I would like to project this animation into a ceiling corner of a room where 3 planes meet." If you have any kind of epilepsy, suffer from migraines or are prone to spontaneous human combustion or frivolous law suits please do not watch this video. Long and Meatball's X-Mas Seligh Run as seen by would-be Santas. In keeping with our coverage of holiday high jinks that began last Saturday evening with Spinello Gallery's toy drive, last night we went to the Miami New Times Christmas Party at Miami Art Space (MAS) where Justin Long and Meatball had orchestrated a sleigh run. For many people, including ourselves, the ride (sans neige) was the only reason to attend. Its not that the party itself was bad, the food despite looking a little like snot was actually very tasty, but the sleigh run was by far the most animated and captivating feature of the evening - apart from maybe the gyrations of the Blue Moon and Red Bull girls, although admittedly we didn't linger inside longer than to grab a drink (Velvet Elvis or something) and left early. page 2 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Dashing through the snow. For those that haven’t yet had the pleasure, Long, Meatball, and associated goons have become the quintessential accompaniment to any vaguely artsy event in Miami. Far and above mere spectacle, their many contraptions and themed rides, borne of insuppressible wit and a desire to exact with mechanical dexterity a playful equilibrium in the arts, are novel for more reasons than the obvious. While all many might derive is a mindless excuse to 'hoot,' the group are elegantly filling a hitherto unnoticed hole in the universe and ironically, regardless of how chaotic their creations might be, they provide unexpected harmony through incongruity. page 3 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Silhouetted, the iconic image of Santa against the moon gets an ET style makeover. Long and Meatball's ability to unwittingly become the center of attention, regardless of the event or their intention to simply provide a peripheral escape, exemplifies their practice; an as yet unclassified animal evolving here in the swamp; perhaps the illegitimate spawn of Bert Rodriguez' "Service Aesthetics" and the Avant Garde. Much like how Chris Burden and Vito Acconci came to epitomize a masochistic branch of performance art, Long and Meatball, their names alone adequate to spearhead a movement, are creating with their cavorting subculture appropriations an anthology of outwardly machismo yet softhearted and essentially harmless experiential deathtraps. Incorporating bikes, ramps, revolving platforms and an innate love of mechanics to educe from everyday instruments a diverse range of bastardized paraphernalia, their oeuvre, sort of Death Race 2000 meets Noddy in Toyland, never fails to amuse the crowds to the point of distraction whilst simultaneously providing a steadily awesome back drop to Miami's fecund arts community. page 4 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Bridging all age and culture boundaries, though failing to impress inflatable flamingos, the ride (sober or not) was a big hit. “You never know what they will do” said one onlooker “but they always make you laugh your ass off.” page 5 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Mindful of the urgency to deliver all presents before sunrise, Rudolph picks up the pace. Whoosh. For the most part, Long stood by grinning through a dirty gray Santa beard as Meatball, wearing brown tights, an alpaca cardigan, and a rubber horses head accessorized with an antlers towed party goers around at various speeds, working himself into a festive sweat. page 6 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Imagine that nibbling on your carrot! page 7 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com There's really not much else to say about the event other than that despite Meatball’s lack of a bright red nose, the ride was a shining, guiding light. More please! Photo laminate and acrylic on canvas, 68 1/4 x 96 1/4 in. Photo: Allison Stewart. I have a confession to make: I love love love Helmut Newton – the big boobs, long legs, and diamonds – ooh la- la! The aesthetic Newton cultivated, one of chic luxury melded with austere voyeurism, is alive at Lead Apron in West Hollywood. For Lead Apron the collector is front and center. Objects such as rare and collectible art books sit juxtaposed by Lichtenstein ceramics and African spirit masks. However, the Lead Apron bookstore is only half of the story. Owner Jonathan Schilder Brown has opened a new sister space across the street for the private viewing of artwork. The spaces are situated across from one another on Melrose Place right in the heart of the WeHo arts district, comfortably positioned near Paul Kopeikin, Regen Projects and Chlöe. page 9 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com page 10 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Private gallery space. For the gallery’s grand opening, Brown invited Patrick Painter gallery director Michael Briggs to curate the group show, Geography of the Imagination, in the bookstore’s private viewing space. Briggs is as casually elegant as the space itself. He looks like a handsome former Ralph Lauren model, rugged and blond. His familiarity with German painting has this gallerina contemplating the connections between Kitsch, Pop, and German Expressionism in a way that suddenly brings the work of enigmatic Andre Butzer into focus. The gallery space is flawless in its presentation, with stunning lighting and gorgeous ceilings. And the arena provides an airy backdrop to a gorgeous Bara painting, Abstraktion 17, as well as an edgy image by Steven Shearer entitled Mustang. Bara, Abstraktion 17, 2009. Oil on canvas, 72 x 96 in. Lead Apron’s moniker seems a code of sorts for the requisite thing an artist or artisan might wear, the requisite apron. This Jet Setter (final confession) is looking for a frilly little one to wear with my French maid uniform, which I suspect that Lead Apron would be happy to expose to me at any time. So, go ahead. Turn the handle and get intimate with their collection. After all, art and books are private and privileged objects, and these appointment-only spaces are both. Lead Apron is located at 8454 Melrose Place, Los Angeles, CA. The gallery is open by appointment only. Art Basel Miami Beach is considered to be the world’s largest art event and Artlurker (not to toot our own horn) is considered to be Miami’s most prolific art publication. In contradiction to a function of Artlurker as a resource to find out what to do to and where to go, and in contrast to Art Basel Miami Beach 2008 when we posted no less than 4 times a day, this year, spurred by a general disdain for consumerism and well-to-do out-of-towners cavorting like pigs in a stunning display of wasteful opulence that has little to do with culture, Artlurker writers Tom and Victor made a pact with each other to see as little as possible. Unavoidably, due to prior commitments, it was impossible for either to see nothing, nevertheless, their tangible dissent gave rise to Operation Boycott Basel, a competition positioned to test who could see the least whilst still functioning as a reputable arts journalist. Everyday, each awoke with the intention of seeing nothing, absolutely nothing. Turning down invitations, avoiding crowds and busying themselves with watching reruns of Lost and Jersey Shore, Tom and Victor spent the majority of their time eloping with tourists, committing themselves to work for shows they could not leave, and longing for the sweet comfort of a deserted island in the south pacific, or the bustling excitement of a summer on the Jersey Shore, pumping fists and drinking Jägerbombs with “Snooky.” page 16 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com In entering into this competition they risked not only their reputations, but also the respect of many who have come to look upon the fair and its associated events with ardor. However, bravely inviting the choleric vexations of those who might spring to Miami’s defense, they embarked with righteous indignation upon what would likely sound the death knell of their short but illustrious careers. While both under viewed America’s most important art happening way more than either reasonably should, only Tom succeeded in avoiding Miami Beach altogether! Because the fair has been good for Miami, this exercise might seem like an arrogant slap in the face of progress, however, the pair wish to make it clear that they do not hate Art Basel Miami Beach, nor want it to go away, they page 18 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com just totally resent the assumption that they should care about it. Happily, going out with no sort of expectation to see anything actually made Basel week - typically a stressful gnarl of networking and taxi rides - easier to swallow, and in the end a more much more enjoyable and rewarding experience as the impossibility of attending every event was already quantified. Although each ultimately failed to 'Boycott Basel' altogether neither regrets seeing what they did. Art Basel Miami Beach is known for great art parties, and this year certainly didn’t disappoint, as far as art goes however, they're not really in a position to comment[.] This post was contributed by Victor Barranachea and Thomas Hollingworth _______________________________________________ page 19 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com The Sunday Video: Coming Soon - The Beastiality-Rights movie Sunday, December 13, 2009 http://www.artlurker.com/2009/12/the-sunday-video-coming-soon-the-beastiality-rights-movie/ This week's Sunday Video commemorates yesterday's U.S. premier of one of the most controversial films of all time, 'COMING SOON.' Having already made history by sparking a Bestiality-Rights revolution in Europe the film, which is only just gracing our shores, is quickly becoming an underground classic. We're not even sure with what words to use to describe this film. It has everything from Arabs complaining about having 47cm long penises and how that forces them to get animal pussy, to a butcher talking about the time he realized that a pig he was about to slaughter had the soul of his dead wife so they instead of killing it he took it home to start a zoo relationship. And lets not forget the actual footage (yikes) of a group of neo-Nazis attacking a woman in her home, tying her up, killing the bull she had relations with and rubbing pieces of it's raw bloody meat over her body. The movie is arguably defensible as it addresses the concept of beastiality more than beastiality itself it, which is kind of intriguing, but at the end of the day it is unavoidably just about a some honest-to-god freaks, like a guy who wishes to be a satyr and so wears goat horns everywhere he goes to a porn actress who was raised in a monastery to a would-be serial killer who speaks about the meat industry like the Nazi concentration camps and likes yelling a lot. Synopsis: "Born in the depths of the European underground, and brought to life by American Director, Sir Tijn Po, this award-winning feature debut has been drawing accolades from a slew of international thinkers, audiences and critics alike. By following the trials and tribulations of E.F.A., the world's first Bestiality-Rights organization, 'COMING SOON' explores the ever-evolving boundaries of love, tolerance, sexuality, tradition, etc. Inspired by Nietzsche, Svankmajer and Pasolini, 'COMING SOON' presents a challenging journey for the experimental mind." Whatever anyone says, we can't persuade ourselves that the quazi-ethical mantras touted in defense of and by people who have relations with animals do little more than to call to attention, once again, how lost we have become in our quest for enlightenment. Like teenagers on the tail end of an acid binge when the overbearing yet practicably unrealistic truths just discovered mesh for fleeting moments with the regimented fiber of known reality causing waves of self affirmation, these individuals, publicly falling from their imagined grace to the depths of conceived debauchery, evidence one of the many dangers inherent in a commanding human trait, conviction. A week after Art Basel Miami Beach and not quite ready to immerse ourselves in New York we visited Spinello Gallery for the Toys for Tots X-Mas Party, a toy drive to benefit needy children in Miami this Christmas. In contrast to the placement of works (mainly leftovers from the Littlest Sister exhibition) that were scattered about the space, the gallery's central feature, a giant Christmas tree ($200), was ceremoniously lit at 8pm sharp. Under it, amidst piles of shredded newspaper, the unwrapped, donated toys steadily grew in number. page 22 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Spinello discussing mystery car with youngster over White Russian cocktail. Refreshingly hap hazard, but not without the effortless elegance we have come to expect from Spinello, the event, which all in attendance look forward to next year, was (and is for a few more hours still) a festive success. In addition to the donated toys, many people associated with the gallery also brought something to sell, the proceeds of which, apart from art works, will go directly to charity. White Russians and Grolsch were on tap to wash down the copious cup cakes, Tater Tats, and mini Min Treats cookies, and to lubricate the various constitutions of costumed revelers, most of which after a few drinks took the plunge and did their time on Santa's lap. page 23 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Our founder, Thomas Hollingworth getting a little more than he was hoping for. Photographs from the event will soon be up on the galleries photo bucket page (check back with us in a day or so for the link), but for now, with a warm, fuzzy, and somehow wholesomely sullied feeling in our bellies (no doubt Spinello's creeping spirit of Christmas!) we give thanks to a gallery that provided us with an opportunity to feel good about ourselves for doing something, which although just a token gesture, in troubled times encapsulated the humble essence of peace and goodwill among men. Thanks Spinello Santa, you're ace! page 25 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Anthony Spinello. Sorry kids, he's real! (Bobby Braddock) The Bale Creek Allen sculptures at Solway Jones remind this Jet-Setter of why Texans are just so much bigger than life. Allen’s remarkable show has just enough grace and hee-haw to position his work in the same class as page 27 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Rosson Crowe’s paintings. The sculptures that dominate the show are bronze tumbleweeds - yes, actual tumbleweeds folks! - each branch delicately welded and coated in nickel, 18 karat-gold or sterling silver. These elegant sculptures sit casually cocksure in their off-kilter glory; their forms so deliberately realistic that they hover just above the surface of normalcy like moissanite or fool’s gold. The only real giveaway that these are sculptures – opposed to the real thing – is the temperature of the metal. Touching one of his pieces is as exciting as petting in the back of a classic car on a deserted highway deep in the heart of Texas (without the requisite shotgun and beer, of course) and not just because one typically shouldn’t get physical with work. Just as alluring are Allen’s cast tire treads and sculptures of gold-dipped link chains with tire treads attached. These are the Texas version of ghetto fabulosity, their links the size of one’s palm. page 28 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com page 29 / 40 ARTLURKER A Miami based contemporary art newsletter / blog - http://www.artlurker.com Bale Creek Allen. Traditional Gator Tread, 2005. Unique cast bronze gator tread. 10 x 72 x 3 inches. Musician and artist David Byrne, who has known Allen for 20 years, stated, “…not only does Bale see his life made of fiddles, ice cream, tire treads, and tumbleweeds, but he accepts that, loves it, and has found a way to use and combine those materials.” James Hill. Some of Everywhere, 2009. Ink on aluminum. 24 x 40 inches. Balancing Allen’s negotiation of his rugged constitution and precise construction are James Hill’s collages on aluminum, a process that provides an appropriately post-modern backdrop to Allen’s romantic sculptural forms. Hill’s photo process, with its revealing half tones and accidental juxtaposing of images is a sort of mash-up of Man Ray and Andy Warhol. His pieces, printed on supports similar to freeway signs, operate as markers without destinations leading one down that “lost highway” or perhaps “drifting a long like a tumbling tumbleweed.” So much for mixing metaphors along with my Texas Tea; this writer is off to find her own Rhinestone Cowboy at the Pasadena Jewelry Mart.
