Music can be used in a variety of ways in the retail environment.
From music across the store with in-house radio, or TVs playing for
the benefit of customers or staff, to the radio in the back office and
the music used on your telephone on hold system, music can have
many uses within your business.
When the customers left the store they were asked about the
music; many of them could not recall hearing any. This shows
the power music has to influence your customers.
Morale and performance
Music can also be a great way to improve the morale and
performance of your staff. Research has shown that
employees can find music very stimulating:
When fast music was played:
‘The music was very motivating’
‘The music was really lively and improved work’
‘There was a good atmosphere’
When no music was played:
‘It was boring’
‘I felt lethargic’
Purchasing choice
Music can be a great tool to help enhance the perception of your
shop or store. It can impact on customer purchasing choice and
improve the morale and performance of your staff.

Creating a brand
Why do I need a PRS Music Licence?
Creating a brand and a unique image for your business is key to
success. Music can be a great way to help achieve this and
differentiate your business from your competitors.
If you perform music within your shop or store it is classed as
a public performance. If you use copyright music – from
background music (TV, radio, CDs, tapes, and DVDs) through
to live bands and music on hold – to lawfully do so you require
the permission of the copyright owner for every piece of music
being performed.
‘Putting Copyright music in our stores has helped to update our
image and that’s good for business’
Andy Fisk - Head of Store Development, MFI
PRS makes it easy to obtain the necessary permission by
issuing PRS Music Licences. A PRS Music Licence allows you
to lawfully play a vast repertoire of millions of songs, written
and published by our members and those of affiliated societies
throughout the world.
Music on hold
What happens if I don’t purchase a PRS Music Licence?
