experience as a music teacher and as lead singer
and keyboardist of the funk band Nasty Delicious.

Dozen Roses” is penning a book she describes as “a
teaching memoir.” Mattea, 56, who grew up in Cross
Lanes, W.Va., is also taking voice lessons. “I am digging back in to be able to shed another
layer of what I think I know about singing, as I have wanted to sing from a more honest
place,” she says. She plans to start recording a new album in the fall before joining Kenny
Rogers and others on the 2016 Country Music Cruise to the Caribbean in mid-January.

The brownies are a huge hit, and our lemon bars are a big

All the physical traits are based on my rescue dog Cece, a braindamaged terrier-mix. I’m pretty slouchy, but Abby, the way she
stands, the way she cocks her head, and the way she walks—
every single thing that Abby does physically is based on Cece.
You’ve been playing Abby for 12 seasons now on NCIS. What do
you still like about her? I love my job. I love Abby Sciuto as much
as everybody else in the world. I can’t wait to get a new script
and see what she’s going to do.

Should I really only
buy groceries from
the outer aisles?
In general, it’s good advice to shop the perimeter of
the supermarket, where the freshest and healthiest
foods (produce, meat, dairy) are located. But not
everything in the middle aisles is a diet disaster. Next
time you head for the store, don’t forget these goodfor-you inside aisle buys:
1. Dried or canned beans
Beans are a great source of protein, fiber and B vitamins, and canning can make beans
easier to digest and even increases the protein and fiber content.
2. Frozen fruits and vegetables
When fruits and vegetables are frozen at peak ripeness, they maintain vitamins, minerals
and other nutritional benefits. Stick with plain options rather than those with sauces.
3. Dried herbs and spices
On top of flavor, many sprinkle on health benefits, such as the protective antioxidants
found in mint, thyme and turmeric. Rosemary and oregano have shown potential for
helping manage diabetes.
4. Whole grains
Unlike their refined counterparts, whole grains can decrease your risk of chronic
diseases such as stroke, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Choose 100 percent
whole-grain bread, brown or wild rice, quinoa and plain oatmeal (no sugar added).
5. Nuts and nut butters
For a quick snack option, stock your pantry with walnuts, peanuts, pecans, cashews,
almonds, pine nuts and pistachios and butters made from them. Be mindful of portion
sizes, as nuts are high in fat and calories. But they’re also packed with unsaturated
fatty acids, fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
