June 2014 Passport to Wellness in June A Publication of the Activities and Wellness Department Montereau, Tulsa, Oklahoma June kicks off our “Passport to Wellness” program. We will have several events covering the 7 Dimensions of Wellness to help you get stamps in your passport. “Passport to Wellness” events include a presentation on the Tulsa Police Departments Special Operations Team, a nature walk around campus, a musical performance by Spotlight Brass and a presentation on Living to be 90 plus. So get your passports and get ready for a summer of wellness. See pages 2-9 for more details. Participating residents will receive a passport. Get it stamped at “Passport to Wellness” events, which will be highlighted in green on the calendar. Collect stamps in your passport to win prizes! This is due to the Montereau employee retreats on June 3, 4, and 5. Please plan accordingly. Tuesday, June 3 ● 2:00 & 3:00 p.m. ● Various Locations Resident Committee Meetings at 2 p.m. “R.O.S.E.” Committee at 3 p.m. Resident Advisory Committees provide ideas and support to each of Montereau’s departments. They meet on the first Tuesday of each month. A list of resident committees is posted in the Post Office. Thursday, June 5 ● 2:00 p.m. ● Coterie Theatre Wii Bowling Tournament The Montereau Holy Rollers have been participating in the local senior community tournament. Friday, June 6 ● 9:00 a.m. ● Grand Lawn Meditative Walk Join the group for a Meditative Walk along the paths of the Grand Lawn and Lake of the Woods. We will reflect on one of the Seven Heavenly Virtues during our walk. After the walk, we will gather near the white marble fountain for a group discussion and prayer. Wednesday, June 11 ● 4:00 p.m. Warren Chapel Episcopal Service A special thank-you to the clergy at our neighboring St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church for offering this monthly worship service at Montereau. Sgt. Basilone was awarded the medal of Honor for his heroism at Guadalcanal. He was later killed in action at Iwo Jima, and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Diane will show a brief documentary about her uncle and share other stories of his bravery. WWII memorabilia will be on display, too. Mark your reservation sheet to attend this event. Perkins will bring some of the special gear and equipment and talk about procedures for training The Saracen, an armored vehicle used by the S.O.T., will be parked near the main entrance for all to view. The menu includes a wonderful selection of American cuisine specializing in steaks and seafood. Both men and women are welcome on this dinner outing. Bring money for dinner. Most needed items are canned meats (tuna, chicken, etc), canned or packaged fruit, canned or boxed meals, soup and stew, peanut butter, pasta and sauce, rice, breakfast cereals, etc. Checks should be payable to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. This series chronicles the lives, times and works of the men whose great genius have captivated the art world for generations. The featured artist this month is Rembrandt. Leading authorities and art historians will explore the artist’s stylistic trademarks, and provide detailed explanations of his techniques. The program is 60 minutes. Guests are welcome. This is the third concert in the series and will feature vocalists Chris Middlebrook and Amy Cottingham. Tickets should be purchased in advance. They’re the victims of poisoning at the home of retired American actor Charles Cartwright (Tony Curtis). Poirot springs into action to ferret out the killer. But the deeper Poirot digs for clues, the more motives for murder he unearths. Photo Gallery Residents and staff had a great time at our Cinco de Mayo Party, complete with food, dancing and margaritas. We celebrated May birthdays with cake and champagne in the Riviera Lounge. Residents enjoyed an evening of baseball at the Tulsa Driller’s game. 13 Employee Spotlight June: Alfredo- Lead FSA Alfredo has only been working at Montereau for a short time, but has already been named Lead Food Server Assistant. He has been here for three months, and says that he likes the people he works with and enjoys seeing the residents. Alfredo was born here in Tulsa. He graduated from high school here and is planning to attend Tulsa Community College. Before working at Montereau, he worked at Warehouse Market. Alfredo is active in sports when he’s not working. He enjoys playing and watching football and basketball. His hobbies also include playing video games and listening to music. When he’s not working he also enjoys spending time with loved ones. He says his family is “awesome and I love them with all my heart.” Month Sudoku Puzzle The objective is to fill the grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. 14 Health & Fitness Health & Wellness Clinic “Passport to Wellness” Ongoing Clinic Services We are starting a new summer wellness program on Monday, June 2nd, called “Passport to Wellness”. The Activities and Wellness team will have several new highlighted events from June to September that you can participate in and get a stamp on your passport! We will include all 7 Dimensions of Wellness: physical, environmental, social, intellectual, spiritual, vocational, and emotional. There will be something for everyone! This will be a lot of fun and get us healthy at the same time. These summer activities will bridge to the Active Aging Week in September, which will be a special wellness adventure! Living to 90 and Beyond was a segment that some of you saw on “60 minutes” last month. If you didn’t have a chance to see it, we are showing it in the Coterie Theatre on June 9. One conclusion from the show states “people who exercised definitely lived longer than people who didn't exercise. As little as 15 minutes a day on average made a difference. Fortyfive was the best. What does that mean?!? Here is one definition of wellness: Wellness is the ability to live life to the fullest and to maximize personal potential in a variety of ways. Wellness places responsibility on the individual; it becomes a matter of self-evaluation and self-assessment. Wellness involves continually learning and making changes to enhance your state of wellness. So think again, How is your wellness? Now is the time to check it. Just as you would check your blood pressure, your car tires, your refrigerator for milk, check your wellness! Make sure you are “full” in all of the seven dimensions. The Seven Dimensions of Wellness: • Social Wellness- The ability to relate to and connect with other people in our world. Now is exercise the only thing that makes you live •Emotional Wellness-the ability to understand ourselves longer?
