Club makes pit stop in LL

LIBERTY LAKE — They
rumbled into town on Friday
afternoon and filed one by
one in to the Zip Trip parking
lot dressed in black leathers
and helmets. An American
flag waved in the wind on the
back of a motorcycle ridden
by Combat Veterans International member Bobby Dale, also
known as “Sack.”
The group of 15-plus riders
stopped outside Spokane to fill up
their tanks and take a break from
the saddle before riding another
200 miles to the Bearmouth Chalet outside Missoula, Mont.
Dale lit up a cigarette and
joined the hearty banter about
helmet laws, the recent resignation of U.S. Secretary of Veterans
Affairs Jim Nicholson and the
reason for riding to help other
veterans and their families.
“Most of us are combat veterans from the Vietnam War,”
Dale said. “We’re vets taking care
of vets and their families. We’re
there for them when they come
back from war or get into trouble
and help guide them through the
things they’re dealing with.”
Dale and the other CVI
riders who stopped in Liberty
Lake on Friday are members of
one of nine chapters of riders
in Washington and Montana
dedicated to helping war veterans and their families. Dale and
members from CVI Chapter
3, based in Kennewick, Wash.,
will serve as motorcycle escorts
on Sept. 29 in Richland, Wash.,
for the 2007 Washington State
Time of Remembrance event
created to honor the families
and soldiers killed in combat in
Iraq and Afghanistan.
“This is the first time all of the
families and fallen soldiers in
Washington state will be honored in one place,” CVI rider
Judy Bowman said. “We’ll be the
escorts at the event, and we’re
still looking for families of fallen
soldiers to participate.”
Dale and the CVI riders
from Kennewick left town early
Friday afternoon and headed
north for Montana. The riders
typically travel 60 to 70 miles
before taking a break, answering cell phone voice mails and
gassing up for another leg of
the trip. From Liberty Lake, the
CVI riders planned to make a
pit stop at an Idaho casino that’s
built its reputation on shelling
out $10,000 prizes and then
continue the trip to the Bearmouth Chalet to meet up with
other CVI riders.
“This was a good place for us
to stop outside Spokane,” Dale
said. “A few of our riders got
banged up earlier in the year,
otherwise we would have had a
lot more riding with us today.”
The group travels with the
bulk of their gear loaded in the
back of a pickup truck that also
tows a trailer in case anyone
breaks down along the way.
After a short break in Liberty Lake, CWI Road Captain
Randy Bluher, also known as “El
Quapo,” hollered at the group of
riders to, “Saddle up.”
“Everyone has a road name,”
Bald Eagle said. “If you don’t
have one, we’ll get you one.”
The motorcycles rumbled to
life as the riders climbed back
in the saddle, and the good-natured banter continued for a few
more minutes while each rider
raised their hand, signaling to
Bluher that they’re ready to ride.
“Are we in Idaho yet?” a rider
asked.
“No,” Dale said. “But when
we cross the border into Idaho,
don’t throw your helmet out on
to the freeway. You’re going to
need it again.”

which included a motel
and restaurant. Today
Anthony lives in Arizona.
