MOTHER’S DAY SELLING
The official observance of Mother’s Day is credited to a woman by the name of Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia. Anna’s
mother died in 1905 and two years later, Anna honored her mother by holding a church ceremony in remembrance of
her. She was so moved by the success of the ceremony that she began a massive campaign to adopt a formal holiday
honoring mothers. She sent letters all over the state of West Virginia appealing to ministers to help her in her venture.
In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. A year later,
many other states followed suit. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother’s Day a national
holiday to be held on the second Sunday of May every year.
THE MEANING OF THE CARNATION – Anna’s mother had a favorite flower, the white carnation. Anna promoted
the wearing of a white carnation as a symbol of devotion. As the years passed, this custom has remained. Today, pink
carnations are often worn to represent love for a living mother while white carnations are worn in respect for those
who are no longer living.
Mother’s Day is May 8th, husbands, grown daughters and sons, as well as children at home all look for ways to
express their feelings. A lot of them come into our stores to find that special item they want to give to Mom. We need
to make a few suggestions and create some impulse sales. In lots of stores, Mother’s Day is the largest floral sales
week of the year. Now that we know the “meaning of the Carnation” we need to take advantage of it and let our
customers know, and while we’re at it, sell some pink and white carnations too. Mother’s Day is also one of the
busiest days for restaurants and because Mom will be treated for dinner whether it’s at a restaurant or a family
member’s home so don’t get caught short on product or labor hours because pre-Mother’s Day week will be a big sales
week.
FLORAL – This is a big blooming plant sales week but not as big as Easter. Your display should include a wide
assortment of 6” or larger blooming as well as a few 4” blooming such as violets. Fresh-cuts really sell well also. Fact
is you will sell more fresh-cuts than you will potted so order them in. Mother’s Day is a huge fresh-cut holiday, you can
sell bouquets and arrangements and single stems if you plan it right. According to Florists’ Review August 2014
magazine, cut flowers are the number one expenditure for Mother’s Day with arrangements leading loose flowers
including loose/boxed, bunch/bouquets and corsages by a wide margin ($36.62 to $17.12) Of all the fresh-cut flowers
purchased for Mother’s Day, 47% are mixed flowers, 23% are roses, 7% are carnations and 20% are other single flower
types, according to the consumer tracking study. Value-added items are the first to leave the store. The
overwhelming majority of all floral purchases made for Mother’s Day are for gifting (88%). The purchaser’s mother
most often receives the fresh cut flowers, while the purchaser’s spouse most often receives the bedding plants. Make
sure you upgrade since 88% of you floral items will be gifts! Just like Easter, merchandise by category and colors
within the categories. Being the big event it is, every year we start early planning by looking at the floral survey
closely and reviewing last year’s orders and sales records. Be sure to see Mother’s Day floral survey included in this
week’s Produce Talk. Remember floral is 85% impulse so how fresh and sharp your display’s look will really make a
difference!
THE DEPARTMENT – Even though Mom will probably be taken out to dinner for Mother’s Day, pre-Mother’s Day
selling is huge. Look closely at scheduling because it is a MUST keeping your department loaded and fresh. Strawberries
will be a big sales item so start with a display that is big enough and make sure you display the entire category
example 1#, 2#, stems, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries, organic and conventional, the entire category will
generate some sales and excitement. Request displays space up front of store for that “first in cart” sale.
Tomatoes are another item that will really sell, but you need to promote the entire category. Sweet Corn will sell
also. Remember to sell husked corn whether you buy it already husk or you husk it yourself, people will pay the price
for convenience. If weather is nice, expect these two items to be big for cookouts. Your salad section will continue to
sell, make sure you have all the varieties that you customers want. Don’t give any customer a reason to go to your
competition to buy something that you don’t have. Sizing might be issue on grapes and stone fruit but have it on hand.
Go big on promoting berries, tomatoes, corn, melons, fresh cut fruit, all you value-added items and really concentrate
on FLORAL. Be sure to include your Crosset merchandiser in all of your plans.

Good Selling!!
WESTERN VEGETABLES
AVOCADOS: Great supply on conventional and organics. We should see pricing stabilize and allow for great
every day retails.
BROCCOLI: Supplies remain stable with good quality product. Markets are also stable.
BRUSSEL SPROUTS: Due to quality issues in the California and Mexican growing regions, supplies remain
very limited. Markets will remain high until the situation improves.
CAULIFLOWER:
average sizing.
Markets are flat with good supplies available. Quality has been nice with larger than
CELERY: Markets and supplies remain as they have been. Steady supplies with great quality.
LETTUCE: Iceberg supplies are coming from the Huron Valley currently. Quality has been overall nice with
minimal rib bruise present. Leafy markets and supplies are stable with good quality.
VALUE-ADDED
Raw product supply is struggling to keep up with demand during transition as processors are sourcing
product from three different growing regions. Supplies and quality should improve as we move into late
April/early May.
SOUTHERN VEGETABLES
Good supplies on most of the southern vegetables.
BEANS, CUCUMBERS & SQUASH: Prices have come down.
CORN: Wide variance on corn.
ONIONS: Mexican onion supplies have improved. Quality is improving and markets are steady.
PEPPERS: Still extremely high.
POTATOES: Markets remain steady. Russet and colored potato supplies are good.
ORGANICS
BEETS: Supplies are steady with good quality. Market remains stable.
BROCCOLI: Markets are holding steady for the most part currently. Quality has been very nice with steady
supplies.
CABBAGE: Supplies and quality remains very nice. Southeast is producing excellent quality with nice
wrapper leaves.
CAULIFLOWER: Supplies are now in good shape in new northern growing regions. Opportunities are present
for promotions.
CELERY: Supplies are a bit more challenged recently with quality being affected in Mexico. Markets are up.
CUCUMBERS: Supplies are in great shape.
increasing to large.
Promotional opportunities are available.
Quality has been
GREEN PEPPERS: Supplies remain limited as cold weather and rain in Mexico have drastically reduced
production. Markets remain high as there are very few regions producing.
KALES: Supplies and markets remain stable. Good quality and supplies are coming from Florida and the
west coast.
RADISHES: Supplies and markets are stable. Quality has been good with minimal top issues.
LETTUCES: Western supplies have been affected slightly by quality. Lady Moon has great quality coming
from Florida currently.

Good Selling!!
YELLOW SQUASH & ZUCCHINI: Florida is starting to increase with steady supplies as the drier warm
weather has helped some crops flourish. Wind has affected the quality of the yellow squash with scaring
that growers are trying to clean out of packs. Mexico still has good volume on yellow and zucchini as well.
ASPARAGUS
Markets are active as Mexico is winding down in supplies and production is moving more into California.
Higher labor rates are driving up markets. Quality has been very nice as everything is being harvest fresh
for orders. Organics are stable with excellent quality.
FRUIT
APPLES & PEARS: Conventional Washington apples are in good supply; pricing is stable and quality is good.
Organic apples are in shorter supply than projected; pricing and availability will tighten up. Import Gala
apples are available now. 12/3 Michigan apples are in good supply and pricing is stable. Import Danjou,
Bartlett and Bosc pears are now available.
BLACKBERRIES: Mexican blackberries are in stable supply; quality continues to be average. California
blacks also in the mix and quality has been very good but strong cost. More regional blackberries are just
around the corner from Florida/Georgia. Little change on organics and costs actually has dropped.
BLUEBERRIES: Chilean blues finished and due to late start of Domestic fruit, a small supply gap has
developed. Markets have skyrocketed on fruit that is available and relief is a few weeks away. Projection
for improved Florida/Georgia blueberries will be toward the end of the month of April. Once volume
improves, good promotional period should become available.
CANTALOUPES & HONEYDEWS: Organic cantaloupes will be available very soon. Magnificent melons are
now available.
CITRUS: Navel oranges are in full production; quality is very good. Blood oranges, Cara Cara navels and
Minneola tangelos are also available and quality is good.
CLEMENTINES: Still good supplies out in California. There is the Israeli fruit coming in now which may put
some more imports into the mix. California looks to come to close at the end of April. There are some very
nice organic clementines/mandarins still available through end of the month.
GRAPES: Better pricing on smaller size fruit as last of Chilean grapes are arriving into ports. Medium,
medium-large on reds and whites have been very promotable; however quite large pricing spread on jumbo
or extra-large code grapes still exists. Quality has looked good on high end Red Crimson seedless. Green
seedless good but most green grapes will be storage picks and quality could become very average.
RASPBERRIES:
Mexico.
Markets and supplies remain stable.
Quality has been overall very nice coming out of
STRAWBERRIES: California is the main regions we’ll be sourcing from. Quality is being impacted with
bruising and will remain due to the weather impacting the regions.
STONE FRUIT
Peaches are starting to rise up but plums still very reasonable and nectarines are the item to promote right
now. First of the Florida peaches could be available for week of April 18th, following by some early
California fruit at last week of April, first week of May.
TROPICAL FRUIT
MANGOES: Supply on conventional and organic mangos is becoming very limited as Peru fruit is coming to
an end. We will not see good supply until Mexican fruit starts the first part of April.

Merchandising Tips
With more daylight and an increasing amount of warmer weather, your customers will be looking to
take their cooking outside with more grilling items. Be sure one of the focal points of your department
is an area dedicated to the items they'll be looking for. Sweet corn, peppers of all colors including sweet
mini peppers, asparagus, sweet onions (Vidalia onions will be a part of the mix soon), large slicing
tomatoes and summer squashes are just some of the items that make an inviting, and colorful eye
catching display. Add baking or sweet potatoes if you wish and always include Garlic Expressions, as this
makes an excellent marinade for many of these items. Don't forget fruits, such as pineapple, for a
grilling item. Seasons change and so do your customers' buying habits, give them what they want.
