First Floor
Themes of the Holocaust
Connecting through individual stories are six themes of the Holocaust:
Lives Before, Shattered Lives, Lives Confined, Lives Destroyed, Lives Rescued,
and Lives Renewed. Entry area, Sala, and Aron Samueli Holocaust
Memorial Library.
Terra Sancta
A map of the Holy Land printed c. 1595. Donated
by Ludie and David C. Henley. Located on the
East wall by the Reference Collection.
Albert Schweitzer Bust
Elie Wiesel
Miriam Baker. Bronze. Dedicated April 11, 2005.
Entry area, Sala, and Aron Samueli Holocaust
Memorial Library.
Schweitzer is the “guiding spirit” of Chapman
University. This is just one of the busts of this great
humanitarian that can be found on campus. Located
behind the Reference Desk.
La Orana Maria
Tale of Genji
Twenty-four prints depicting scenes from chapters of
the Japanese classic, Tale of Genji, written just after
1000 A.D. by Lady Murasaki Shikibu, and considered
the world’s first novel. Gift of Aquin Mitsuo
Yamagishi. Frank Mt. Pleasant Library of Special
Collections and Archives, Fourth Floor.
Russian Icons from the Collection of Evelyn
LaLanne
Forty-five icons from the 18th and 19th Centuries. Gift
of Evelyn LaLanne. Hallway.
Paul Gauguin. Zincograph. Gift of Jim and Lynne Doti
in memory of Roch Edward Doti. Located to the left of
the Circulation Desk.
Founding Donors Wall
Designed as an open book, this wall commemorates
the 52 founding donors of the Leatherby Libraries.
Located near the entrance to the Rotunda.

Official presidential portrait. Donated by Mr. and Mrs. Phillip
Stewart Charis. Located near the entrance to the Rotunda.
Cobham Brass Rubbings
Our vision is to be the intellectual and cultural heart of Chapman University and
the art displayed here helps achieve that mission. For more information, please call

These rubbings showcase some of the finest 15th Century
memorial brasses found in England. Donated by the Carbon
Dubbs Family. Located in the main staircase. A dedicated
brochure is available at the Reference Desk.

Granary Ladders
Lobi people of North Ghana and Southern
Burkina Faso. Late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Eight ladders, each hewn from a single tree
trunk and carved with ascending forked steps.

Persian Empire Lion
Ali Bozorgmehr. Mixed media on paper. Styled
from the Lion Griffin at the Palace of King Darius
the 1st, Persian Empire. Gift of the artist.

Trains
Fred Bonn. Acrylic on board. A series of images
of 19th century trains. On loan from Dr. Richard
T. Pitts. Located at the entrance to the Edgar and
Libby Pankey Library of Education.

Holocaust Survivors: The Indestructible Spirit

many contributions of these educators to Chapman
