Please provide a description of your
organization including the population
served, the main programs, and history
of success (if applicable).
Project Green Schools is a STEM, project-based learning program
that involves building Green Teams throughout our school district
(grades K-12). The students in the Green team are trained to use
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
equipment to conduct an energy audit of their school. The program
is introducing our students to Green careers, familiarizing them with
STEM equipment while also helping them make the life-long
connection between how a population's behavior as it relates to
resource management impacts the economy and ultimately our
environment. A Green team consists of a Team leader (teacher), the
school's Plant Manager and a student audit team. Project Green
Schools is a STEM, project-based learning program that involves
building Green Teams throughout our school district (grades K-12).
We've trained nearly 600 students to date and are need of supplies
to expand the participation of the program.

Exposing students to Green and STEM careers.

Project Green Schools is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics) project-based learning program that involves
building Green Teams throughout Shelby County Schools (SCS) in
grades K-12. This revolutionary program is providing SCS Green
team members with hands-on training and exposure to the STEM
and Green career industry. We train and educate our participating
students with a broad awareness of STEM industries now and thus
prepare them to be future Scientists and Engineers, shaping a better
tomorrow on a local and global scale.
Please describe the project for which
you are seeking funding.
Project Green Schools, through SCS's non-profit, SchoolSeed
Foundation, is seeking funding to purchase the following:
• $5,731 STEM equipment for energy audit toolkit lending library.
• $2,200 The University of Memphis WOW mobile
(Water-on-Wheels http://www.memphis.edu/wateronwheels/about/index.php) fee to
bring the WOW mobile to twenty Green schools for grades 3-6 at a
cost of $100 per school + a $10 gasoline fee.
• $2,069 Field trips to locations in our city to conduct three
community service clean-up projects planting trees, etc. for grades
6-12.
Why are you doing this project?
This program is addressing several challenges:
* The program introduces students including those of
underrepresented populations (girls and minorities) to careers in
STEM.
* Our student Green teams are leading the charge to reduce energy
consumption and the CO2 gas emissions at their schools.
With funding from Grant 365 we will be able to achieve a great deal.
Define short-term success for your
project. What do you expect to see as a

* We'll purchase additional equipment for our energy audit toolkit
year? (May, 2017)
lending library so that 20 new Green Schools can check out STEM
equipment to conduct an energy audit of their school.
* We will book the W.O.W.(Water on Wheels) Mobile Lab to visit 20
of our participating Green Schools. This is an amazing environmental
educational resource that an entire school can experience (grades
3-6). When the WOW mobile visits schools, the mobile lab is parked
outside of the school and students can be rotated in and out of the
mobile lab. This is a very educational, yet cost effective way that
students can experience this resource.
* We will be able to do advance planning to ensure three successful
community service projects for a total of 75 middle and high school
participants.
Define long-term success for your
project. What do you expect this
project to have achieved in three
years? In five years?
Long-term success for our project would consist of having adequate
equipment to sustain an energy audit toolkit lending library. The
equipment will be used during the training of new Green teams. We
currently have 38 participating schools to date (we have averaged
the training of approximately 20 new schools per year since the
start of our program). Our goal is to train an additional 20 schools
each year (i.e., approximately 200 new Green team students) until
all schools are served.
In three years we will reach an estimated 900 participating students.
In five years we will reach an estimated 1,300 participating students.
As additional students are participating, they impact the behavior of
their school population helping reduce energy consumption
school-wide (saving money and reducing CO2 gas emissions). As we
train and educate our participating students, we are also working
towards our long-term goal of building strong business and
post-secondary partnerships that will allow students to take
advantage of a strong local STEM workforce pipeline.

great work that we're doing preparing students for the STEM
workforce of tomorrow.
