While the Jewish new year provides time for reflection and renewal, the celebration of our “secular” new year offers another opportunity to rededicate ourselves to our NCJW mission and purpose. My wish for all of us is for a year of good health, peace and engagement – and hopefully NCJW can provide ways to lift your spirit and fill your life with new meaning. Our Section is brimming with activities, Darien Arnstein President programs and events for all interests and time [email protected] availability. If direct, hands-on volunteering is your thing, check out our Project Renewal schedule this spring, we’ll be opening several Kids Community Closets needing school liaisons, or our Back to School! Store at Congregation Temple Israel on July 24th. Our Human Trafficking Task Force has several projects in the works especially for January, which is Human Trafficking Awareness month. Or, become involved with our Healing Hearts Banks and the Older Adult Community Action Program (OACAP) which have great programs and opportunities for service as well. Never a dull moment with NCJW! We offer fun events as well, be sure to join us for Trivia Night on February 20th, Installation and Section Awards in May and several other dates that are still being finalized – so stay tuned! Later this year we’ll be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Jean Stein Bloch Wife Widow Woman program, which have expanded to three groups each year. Or consider our Washington Institute in March to engage with our national legislators on “What’s At Stake for Women” in the 2016 elections, a day trip to Jefferson City for state-level impact on advocacy, or perhaps an hour for an in-district meeting here in St. Louis. Check out our 2016 Third Thursday Lunch and Learn schedule for briefings on relevant NCJW issues over lunchtime, and/or add your name and your support to our Advocacy “A-List” ads for 2016! NCJW will continue our work on racial equity with other Jewish organizations in the “Forward through Ferguson” program in our community. Fundamental to making all this happen is your membership and financial support through our Annual Campaign. Please consider taking our matching gift challenge by making (or increasing) your Annual Campaign gift by $120 and helping the St. Louis Section continue our 120-year tradition of making a difference in the lives of women, children and families. And lest we forget, our Resale Shop is truly the jewel in our financial success – so please remember to come shop and donate your good-quality clothing, jewelry and housewares to us. Encourage your friends and family to do so as well! Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and productive 2016! January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month! President NCJW-St. Louis Section 2 NCJW - ST. LOUIS SECTION Jen Bernstein, State Policy Advocacy Chair ([email protected]) Nancy (Nix-Rice) Litz Co-VP Advocacy ([email protected]) 1 Human Trafficking is a modern form of slavery. The Department of Justice has identified St. Louis among the top 20 human trafficking jurisdictions in the United States. Being a victim of human trafficking is not a choice; being proactive about the issue is a choice. January 21 January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and our Thursday Lunch and Learn Series will provide an update on legislation, law enforcement and individual efforts to build awareness and prevention, rescue victims and restore them to a safe and normal life. See more information in our Thursday Lunch and Learn Series section. 2 Next time you go to the airport look for NCJW’s human trafficking Awareness posters. 1 L to R: Deidra Thomas-Murray, St. Louis Public Schools; Professor Kristin Carbone, UMSL; Dr. Chelsea Watson, Parkway School District 2 Front Row: Heather Silverman, Lauren Hersh, Ellen Alper, Darien Arnstein. For more information contact Heather Silverman at 314-993-5181 or [email protected]. Continued on next page. January – March 2016 3 {Advocacy} St. Louis Section Held Trafficking Conference October 1 Continued from page 3. NCJW held our first conference on human trafficking on October 1st at the Sheet Metal Workers’ Hall. The full day conference featured speakers who enlightened, engaged and informed attendees about human trafficking and what they can do to combat the issue. Workshops were available for a variety of knowledge levels from interested community members to professionals working in the field. Our keynote speaker was Lauren Hersh, Director of Anti-Trafficking Policy & Advocacy with Sanctuary for Families in New York City. We also heard from Christine McDonald, a sex trafficking survivor, who provided an emotional testimonial of her experiences. Workshop presenters included State Representative Jacob Hummel, secretary-treasurer of the Missouri AFL-CIO, who spoke about what can be done to stop trafficking and how to take an active role in sex and labor trafficking awareness. Bradley Harmon, president of CWA local 6355, along with Deedee Lhamon from the Covering House, led a workshop about what is available for victims of this horrific crime and what we need. Conference attendees learned: 1. We need to reach out to our legislators and ask them to take action on this issue such as enacting legislation which would protect workers from having their passport taken away, strengthen consequences for buyers of sex, and evacuating convictions for victims of trafficking. 4 NCJW - ST. LOUIS SECTION Jen Bernstein, State Policy Advocacy Chair ([email protected]) Nancy (Nix-Rice) Litz Co-VP Advocacy ([email protected]) 2. Raising awareness about the realities of sex trafficking as well as the size of the issue in our community is crucial. 3. There are not enough resources for victims. For more information about trafficking and what you can do contact Heather at 314-993-5181 or [email protected]. The St. Louis Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) adopts new Reproductive Justice Resolution due to NCJW effort. Early in 2015, leaders of NCJWSt. Louis Section observed that the JCRC’s 25-year-old position paper on Reproductive Justice, while appropriate for its time, was in need of updating to reflect the current situation and needs of women in the country and in many states, including Missouri. Through an almost year-long effort, the new Resolution was drafted and steered to approval by a committee led by NCJW’s JCRC representatives Lise Bernstein and Benita Boxerman, and assisted by Executive Director, Ellen Alper. This Resolution supports a stronger and broader Reproductive Health position and was overwhelmingly adopted by the St. Louis JCRC in September. Not only does the new Resolution emphasize the importance of ensuring access to health care, it gives JCRC the ability to advocate against anti-choice legislation. Furthermore, the resolution states that funding should not be a barrier for Missouri women to get basic reproductive health services. The text of the resolution can be found on the JCRC website, at www.jcrcstl.org/ positions.php. NCJW was joined by Kol Rinah, Hadassah and Temple Emanuel as members of the JCRC Council in sponsoring this Resolution for presentation to the council. As NCJW members, we should all feel enormous pride in having brought about this positive change in the collective voice of the St. Louis Jewish community on behalf of women and reproductive justice. JOIN THE NCJW-St. Louis Section A List You don’t want to be left off of NCJW’s A-List when the 2016 Missouri legislative session begins in January. There will be important issues and ballot initiatives on which NCJW will take a position. NCJW generally runs full page A-List ads in the Jewish Light every year (specific content TBD). Please help support these positions by becoming an A-Lister ($18), or Advocate Plus ($54). We’d love to have all NCJW members listed on the A-List this year! If you’d like to be involved in drafting ads and recruiting participants, we’re looking for new committee members and a committee chair. It’s a wonderful way to inform our community of our priority issues and for you to show your support. Join us! For more information contact Lisa Gjerswald at 314-993-5181 or [email protected]. Save the Dates: March 13-15, 2016! Don’t miss NCJW’s premier public policy event with in-depth issue briefings from political leaders and policymakers, specialized advocacy skills trainings and meetings on Capitol Hill. Every three years, NCJW brings advocates from across the country to Washington, to meet with issue experts and elected officials to promote progressive social change. Whether you are a seasoned advocate or a first time attendee, there is always something to learn and be inspired by. Washington Institute 2016 will be held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. Featured speakers this year include Dahlia Lithwick, senior editor at Slate Magazine; Jane Eisner, Editor-in-Chief of the Jewish Daily Forward; Mara Liasson, NPR political correspondent; and Roberta Kaplan and Edie Windsor (attorney and plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that paved the way for marriage equality) who will receive the NCJW Social Action Award. Washington Institute is inspiring, motivating, and amazing. It’s not to be missed! to date on the details through our new Third Thursdays series of informative lunch-and-learn sessions at the NCJW office. Bring your lunch and we’ll provide beverages and light snacks at 11:30 am and a top-tier speaker will present from noon -1:00 pm. There is no charge to attend, but RSVPs are requested so we can have adequate seating available. Please call Lisa Gjerswald at 314-993-5181or e-mail [email protected]. It’s also a great opportunity to introduce a friend to NCJW’s impressive advocacy work. January 21 Our speaker will be Savannah Stepp, director of Nightlight Branson, an organization that reaches out to, rescues, and restores those who are negatively impacted by sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Her work has taken her to the Netherlands to do outreach and job training for women working in the Red Light district. Her work in Branson seeks to provide life and job skills in addition to other necessary support. February 10 Karen Aroesty, Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League, and Jean Cavender, Executive Director of the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center, will guide us through ways Nazi propaganda helped enroll the police into helping oppress German Jews and how similar coded messages can be reflected in our own culture to stereotype minority groups. Third Thursday Lunch and Learn NOTE: This session only will be held at the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center. Many of NCJW’s core issues are in the news … and we want to keep our members up Topics for Spring 2016 sessions include voter suppression concerns, disability inclusion, equity in early childhood education, cyber-security and grassroots organizing and campaign effectiveness. Save the Date: Lobby Day, April 12 NCJW members travel to Jefferson City to speak to legislators about issues that will improve the quality of life for women, children and families. Whether you walk the capitol’s hallways regularly or are just getting into progressive issues, we’d love to have you join us! At last year’s Lobby Day, NCJW was specifically sought out by a state representative to speak to another representative about some troubling legislation, and Marlene Hammerman presented impromptu testimony in support of the Missouri Non-Discrimination Act (MONA). It was incredibly exciting! This year Lobby Day is Tuesday, April 12. For a $36 donation, you get the opportunity to make a difference in our state...plus bus transportation, training, snacks and drinks. This year is especially important as our VESSA (domestic violence and human trafficking) legislation will hopefully be moving forward. We hope you’ll join us! It is a fact of life that the cost of tangible items have increased while the value of money has decreased... which leads one to wonder; “What can one do with $300.00?” I pondered this thought as I sat in the office of my Case Manager as she was telling me about a microloan offered by NCJW and the YWCA. I was considering putting a down payment on a car; I had recently gained employment and could make monthly payments to repay the loan. So I developed a plan. I would save as well as apply for the loan. I applied for and was approved for the $300.00 loan and I set aside the loan amount in a savings account; the funds cannot be withdrawn for six months. I was adding to the funds as planned when I discovered that my credit score began to increase. This news empowered and encouraged me to take other steps to ensure that my credit score continued to improve; I made payment arrangements for newly defaulted student loans, I updated my budget and began to look for ways to rebuild my credit score and save more money. As I succeeded, I found myself feeling better about what I previously believed was an insurmountable issue, money and debt. I directly attribute each financial victory in my plan to the spiritual, psychological and financial “boost” I obtained from receiving and repaying the $300.00 microloan from the National Council of Jewish Women and the YWCA. On the surface it would appear that the value of $300.00 has decreased overtime. However, the dignity, discipline, self-esteem and financial independence I am achieving as a result of receiving this microloan is immeasurable and invaluable. I want to thank the NCJW and the YWCA for giving me the most valuable gift of all, faith in myself again, to make sound and rational financial decisions. Sometimes all one needs is a chance, and, you have provided me with that chance, and for that, I am grateful. 10 NCJW - ST.
