Welcome!
Here is the 9th edition of “Fund News,” the Jayme’s Fund for
Social Justice Newsletter. We hope this informs as well as
inspires…
Thanks for Celebrating Life with
Jayme’s Fund!
Dearest Jayme’s Fund Friends,
Jayme’s Fund was founded as a result of your love, kindness, compassion and
generosity. The opportunity to help others in Jayme’s name was a precious
gift, and so Jayme’s Fund extends that love, kindness and generosity to others
in our communities and around the world.
Establishing this legacy in Jayme’s name and forwarding human rights, brings
the hope for prosperity to children in need and allows young people and
adults an opportunity to join together and make a difference!
Nearly 10 years later, Jayme’s Fund has helped children and families by
providing educational scholarships, funding programs, educating the public
on human rights issues and inspiring countless youth and adults. We partner
with and proudly support the activities of the youth-led initiative Lil’MDGs.
And, we just formed a partnership with Second Chance Africa, an organization
which is leading the human rights effort to integrate mental health services in
war- torn Liberia.
Please join together with us as we “Celebrate Life” – the 10 Year
Anniversary of Jayme’s Fund!
Your generosity and caring is the foundation of our work and we are deeply
grateful for all that you have done and continue to do to support the mission
of Jayme’s Fund! Please contact me if you have any questions or comments. I
would love to hear from you.
May peace be upon you and on all of us.
With sincere gratitude,
Caren Lipkin Rifkin
Jayme’s Mom and Founder
Jana Pinto and children
in advanced studies in neuroscience at the Queensland Brain Institute,
University of Queensland in Australia in 2012. She will conduct research on
trauma treatment of post-war Africans. She attended college and graduate
school in Massachusetts, and worked as a research assistant at Massachusetts
General Hospital and Harvard Medical School performing genetic research
for anxiety disorders. By devoting her life to developing Second Chance Africa,
Jana, who is exceptionally talented in her academic, clinical, artistic and
creative skills, has offered hope and a second chance to this community that
desperately needs assistance.
Since the Liberian Civil War ended in 2003, relief organizations have
brought humanitarian assistance of every kind, except one that has been
neglected: mental health. Former child soldiers are today’s criminals, still
addicted to drugs they were forced to take in order to fight. There are no drug
detoxification programs in the country and no trained mental health providers.
Traumatized parents are passing on the trauma to the next generation in the
form of child abuse. Refugees refuse to repatriate because of trauma and fear,
and depression is common. Although the war is over, the aftermath lives on.
The mission of Second Chance Africa is to build peace through providing
free mental health services for survivors of war and conflict. The SCA staff
in Liberia is being trained to provide psychological services for post-war
and post-conflict children and adults, preventative childhood intervention
at schools and orphanages, literacy and skills training, and psychological
education through community workshops and radio broadcasts about mental
health conditions, drug abuse, and parenting skills.

and Justice!
We are pleased to announce a partnership with Second Chance Africa, an
organization that was founded by a remarkable young woman, Jana Pinto.
Several years ago during an academic internship, Jana was deeply affected
by the devastation she witnessed in Liberia and she knew that she could
not leave the country without trying to help the people that she had become
so fond of. Jana is a licensed psychologist in Brazil who will be enrolled
This is a story about a story.
The story began when Jayme was 12 years old and
decided to do a mitzvah (good deed) project, in the
tradition of her Jewish heritage, as she was entering the
year that she would become Bat Mitzvah. She thought
of and initiated a creative project which involved hand
sewing fleece teddy bears that she proudly delivered to
the Jimmy Fund clinic in Boston.
Photographer and writer Suzanne Laurent wrote a
thoughtful piece about the project titled Boo Boo Bears,
which ended up on the front page of New Hampshire’s
Derry News in 1997. Years later, a conversation and
the support of photographer and writer Kate Harper,
inspired me to write a book about the experience.
That copy was written in 2004 and told the story of the
making of the bears and the frenzy of fleece that existed
in our home for several months… which in the end,
brought comfort and smiles to kids who were sick. A
great story written from my heart, but not well written
enough to be published, has since taken many twists and
turns and at last morphed into a delightful story that is
written by author Diane Mayer and illustrated by Ashley
McCarty.
Who Need’s Bears? is in the final phases of illustration
and will be published in 2012.
This story has taken time to develop, and I am very
grateful to the many artists, individuals and businesses
Thank you for your support... Thank you for remembering Jayme

Way to go and news from our shining stars!
Ryan Chiavetta, 2008 Journalism Scholarship.
When I received the Jayme’s Scholar Award back in high school,
I was sure that I wanted to be a writer. Being a part of the school
paper at Pinkerton Academy was a big step in starting my career
as a journalist. However, the idea of getting a job seemed so
abstract. I was 18 years old. I had no idea where I wanted to go.
After four years at the University of New Hampshire, I now know
that I want to become the journalist that I was set on back in
senior year. I will receive my degree in journalism with a minor
in business this spring, but what I’m most excited about is my
internship that I will start in January. I will be working at NESN.
Since I was four years old, I always wanted to work around sports and now I am closer to that
dream than I have ever been. I look forward to graduation and whatever is coming my way.
The future has never been brighter.
Juan Zamudio, Breakthrough Manchester Jayme’s Scholar
2007.
Since becoming a Jayme’s Scholar, I have been busy with my
education, the arts, and volunteering. I challenge myself
vigorously academically, was recently accepted to NHMEA’s
Jazz All States, participate in my high school drama and music
programs, take piano lessons and sing at my local church. It’s
important to give back to your community and I have learned
that you can help and at the same time do what you love to do. I
am also a teacher at Breakthrough Manchester - giving back to Breakthrough for what they
have given me is something that could never be repaid. Jayme’s Fund has truly taught me to
look at the human rights issues in the world. I am seeing myself mature and progress in life
every day, so that I can ultimately become the person I want to be, achieve the goals that I
want to accomplish, and live life in happiness, with wonder and without regrets. For this, I
thank everyone who has been a part of my life and who has fulfilled what it means to live free
and to take every opportunity you can before it’s too late.
that have supported the project along the way.
While the book will raise funds and awareness for
Jayme’s Fund, our greatest desire is that it will bring
goodness and inspiration to children in our communities
and around the world who read it for comfort, read it for
inspiration, or just read it for fun!
That story is yet to be written, and when it is….. we look
forward to sharing it with you!

Lauren Rose, 2010 Pinkerton Academy Scholarship Awardee.
I actually have a pretty cool job now here at UMass Amherst
as the assistant director of hockey operations and it keeps me
very busy - I love every minute of it! It’s a tough semester, but
I am loving school. So very happy with my decision to attend
UMass Amherst and appreciative of the scholarship that was
given to me! Thomas Sohlaris, 2009 Journalism Scholarship.
I’m currently a junior at UConn, studying journalism. I’m in
two clubs on-campus: Husky Records as an artist, and the
UConn school paper, as a sports contributor. I love school down
here and I’ve been working hard at perfecting my craft as a
journalist! For community activities, my work study has been in
the Hall Director’s office in various dormitories, so I try to help
out there whenever I get the chance - and I plan on attending
the UConn Relay For Life in the spring.
Kerylne Desire, 2008 Academic Scholarship.
I am now a current senior at Gettysburg College, working
towards a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. I have developed my
interest and skill level in the French language, participated
in Women’s Rugby, and held executive positions in the Black
Student Union and the NAACP chapter on campus. I am
also involved in a program called SARA (Students Against
Relational Aggression). We go into the town’s school settings
and work with the female youth by providing tools to work
around this female form of bullying through interactive
lessons. I took part in an immersion project that took place
in La Romana, Dominican Republic. During my time there, we
focused on the issues surrounding the Haitians living in the DR,
particularly on the conditions that the Haitians living and working on the sugar plantations
face. Also, this past Spring semester, I went abroad to Cape Town, South Africa and took
part in the School for International Training’s program Multiculturalism and Human Rights.
The program placed emphasis on the social injustices that the racial groups in South
Africa experience post-apartheid as well as full immersion in one of the country’s official
languages, Xhosa. This was an experiential program, so the four different homestays were
an essential part of my experience.
Students Engaged in Rewarding Volunteer Experiences (SERVE) at SNHU
Maryna Demetri, 2008-2011 SERVE intern for Jayme’s Fund. I
am a senior at Southern New Hampshire University and this is
my fourth year interning for Jayme’s Fund. It’s been amazing
seeing the growth of the fund over the past few years and seeing
the amount of donations and gifts has truly been gratifying. If it
wasn’t for the supporters, Jayme’s Fund wouldn’t be where it is
today. The kindness that goes into this fund is what keeps Jayme’s
Fund going. I didn’t know Jayme, but I can tell the greatness
of her heart just through Caren, Jayme’s mother, founder of
the fund, and my supervisor. Her hard work and dedication is
absolutely incredible. Every little bit helps going toward changing the world. The hard work
put into this fund and the love for helping others is something I am going to take with me for
the rest of my life after graduation. I can honestly say that I am proud to be part of the Fund,
and I would like to say thank you for your support of Jayme’s Fund!
Kristine Nicholson, 2009-2011 SERVE intern for Jayme’s Fund. I
am completely inspired by working for Jayme’s Fund! Through
Jayme’s Fund, I have been introduced to numerous, and diverse
groups of individuals who have made an impact in society. The
mission of Jayme’s Fund to improve the education, advance
human rights and encourage diversity is supported through an
assortment of fun and interactive fundraising events. These
events have made an impact on my life. When events have
such magnificent results, it is heartwarming to see how many
people who took the time to come out and support the cause! I
have learned so much in the past three years at Jayme’s Fund, and am excited to continue
working for a Fund that has a strong philosophy and core values!

Manchester NH, is dedicated to improving the health
and well being of disadvantaged children in the Greater
Manchester area. CHS is a fully-integrated system of biopsychosocial health care, social service and nutrition

the well being of children.
I just wanted to say thank you again for the award. I was
honored and sincerely appreciate it. My family was so
proud of me! I have been very busy with new challenges
and enjoying life. I visited England, France, and Ireland
over the summer. The trip was more than humbling
and opened my eyes to a world outside of my own. I
am currently a journalism major at
High Point University, NC and I have
been enjoying all the school has to
offer. I am a member of the High Point
University Dance Company where I
continue my passion for dance and
look forward to our plans to perform
for fundraising events. Thank you
again for the opportunity to be involved!

positive energy to students…so generously sharing of himself,
inspiring kids to Be Somebody and to care about human
rights locally and around the world!
After the show, Damion writes “The Amazing Hero Art show
was really inspiring. When he said that you can do anything
you want, he made me feel “powerful.” I also thought that
it was very nice how he said to the little boy that he needs
to follow his dreams to become as good as Rob Surette. Now
that he has inspired me and a bunch of others, I will soon
fulfill my dream of becoming an actor.”
