Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games
Festival Guide
19 Jul — 3 Aug
Glasgow is Scotland’s cultural powerhouse.
With eyes of the world now upon us, we are set to
enjoy the biggest sporting and cultural celebration
Scotland has ever seen.
Regardless of whether you live and work in the city
– and know it well – or whether you’re a spectator or
visiting our city for the first time, we’ve no doubt that
you’ll be bowled over by what’s on offer.
Everyone has a chance to be part of the Games
and the Festival 2014 programme has something
for everyone to enjoy. There will be shows to
entertain, performances to get involved with, to
learn from, have fun with and more than a few
surprises along the way. There will be
spectaculars and intimate shows, exhibitions,
family-friendly events, comedy, film, dance,
music and song. We will tell the story of Glasgow
and explore the city and nation’s relationship
with the Commonwealth.
With the help of some of our finest artists, we
will showcase what makes Glasgow great, a
global centre for arts and creativity and we will
do it on a massive scale, in a way that thrills
audiences and engages with new ones.
Festival 2014 kicks off on Saturday 19 July
and lasts until the Closing Ceremony on 3 August
There will be more than 1,000 performances
across 100 venues right across the city. There’s
no doubt that the real buzz and atmosphere of
the Games will be found at three iconic outdoor
locations where celebration events will be taking
place, morning, noon and night, for the duration
of the Games. At Glasgow Green Live Zone, you
will be able to enjoy big screens showing
sporting highlights, a big stage programme,
come and try sessions and some of the very best
food that Scotland has to offer.
2
19 July – 3 August
The Merchant City Festival has been
extended to 11 days, with live bands, music,
family activities and the return of Wayne
Hemingway’s Vintage Festival. In the west of
the city, we’re delighted to welcome back the
refurbished Kelvingrove Bandstand, with a
family friendly programme and some of the
best performance and music around.
Drop by, have fun.
The following pages will be your guide to
what’s on. They’ll show you where you can
celebrate, where you can enjoy performances as
you make your way to a sporting event and
where you can make the very most of Glasgow’s
Games. What’s more, many of the activities on
offer are free of charge, as we encourage
everyone to take part.
This is Glasgow’s time to shine.
Let’s celebrate.

one of Glasgow’s best loved venues.
Programmed in association with the acclaimed

except, of course, to take to the dance floor or
order one of our Festival 2014 Commonwealth
cocktails.
The Festival 2014 Club launches on 24 July with
a jam packed programme featuring some of
Scotland’s best contemporary and traditional
Gaelic artists – from singers to electronica, and
spoken word to rappers.

Peatbog Faeries (Scotland), Sotho Sounds

tunes to Scottish folkie mash-ups. And watch out
for Team Scotland and other Commonwealth

Safety and Security Tips
During the Festival for the safety and enjoyment of
yourself and others there will be safety and security
measures put in place. Therefore at certain venues
there will be a screening process in place for all
spectators before being allowed into the venue.
The process varies depending on the venue and
will ensure none of the restricted or prohibited
items are brought into the venues. Make sure you
allow time for this when planning your day.
Not bringing prohibited or restricted items, and
following the advice of Festival staff, will keep the
queues flowing smoothly. For faster entry, please
leave bags at home and have your belongings
(including pocket contents) ready for inspection.
Prohibited and restricted items are any which
could be used to cause annoyance, unnecessary
obstruction or distraction, offence or harm; and/
or which are illegal under Scottish law. Examples
include: knives, illegal drugs or similar
substances; alcohol; glass and cans; and flags or
banners of non-sport related causes, affiliations
or organisations.
To ensure you can enjoy the events and
entertainment any criminal and antisocial
behaviour will be dealt with accordingly.
Please note that all containers of liquids,
aerosols or gels – with the exception of sunscreen
(200ml) and non-alcoholic drinks (500ml) must be
100ml or under in volume. Any bags which are
brought into the venues must be soft sided bags no
larger than 25litre (equivalent to 30 x 20 x 20cm
/ 12” x 8” x 8”).
Remember to dress for all weathers and bring
an empty water bottle to allow you to take
advantage of the drinking water taps on site and
stay hydrated throughout your stay.
Please be considerate to local residents as
you enter and leave the venues. For your safety
please follow the instructions of Festival 2014
staff at all times.
Please ensure that you are aware of the
prohibitions and restrictions for each venue as
part of planning your day. Before you go, it’s
