Group leaders and instructors in Pembrokeshire have the chance to influence thousands of visitors each year. The Pembrokeshire Marine Code and Outdoor Charter projects 2002 - 2012 A glance at some key achievements... Training/Best practice events: Over 1,200 instructors, skippers, activity leaders and conservationists have attended 36 environmental instructor / skipper training events including seal walks, geology boat trips, wildlife crime training, river canoeing, rocky shore coasteering, sea kayaking with wildlife, climbing, woodlands / estuary training 5 x Wise Courses run, 170 skippers crew and sea kayakers now accredited in Pembrokeshire. 4 / 5 x Wildlife Sightings Events – 100’s people attended Developed voluntary codes of conduct viewed as best practice Nationally PASSING ON BEST PRACTICE, KNOWLEDGE AND ENTHUSIASM TO 10,000s OF VISITORS AND LOCALS EVERY YEAR Codes of Conduct and Best Practice Developed Marine Code maps - 400 copies produced and distributed. Developed MC leaflets for the general public to include the detailed maps 10,000 copies produced and distributed. Conducted a full review of the maps and codes of conduct in 2009. Redesign, update and reprint / distribution of 10,000 more + 600 waterproof versions Marine Code for kayaking developed with all key stakeholders Coasteering and Kayaking best practice videos Chosen by NRW as 1 of 2 projects highlighting best practice/COC at recent event launching new activity codes Cornwall creating COCG based on Pembrokeshire model Membership Criteria 2012 (Up for discussion) We will avoid damage to sites and minimise any disturbance to wildlife, in accordance with codes of conduct and wildlife legislation. We will ensure that all activity leaders encourage visitors to develop a respect and understanding of wildlife and the environment. We will liaise closely with the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, landowners, and the Activities Liaison Officer over the use of new sites and/or the development of new activities. We will abide to Countryside Access Legislation and local Countryside / Marine Code. We will show consideration for the local community and other users of the area. We will annually attend a minimum of one full members meeting. We will annually attend a minimum of one Outdoor Charter approved training event. We will work towards an environmental accreditation such as Green Dragon or Carbon Neutral, and/or become an Eco centre. We will ensure that all activity leaders are trained under the relevant governing body’s guidelines. We will continue to help develop the Pembrokeshire Outdoor Charter and will encourage others to adopt it. Agreed Access Restrictions (seals and seabirds) – Agreed Codes of Conduct Raise public awareness of them Wind Sports Management kitesurfbase-001.jpg Partnership Working: Working groups for: Climbing / Wind Sports/ PWC/ Coasteering involved/Chair Resolved over 40 allegations of MC and OC code breakage, resolved numerous wildlife / recreation conflict issues Established a bespoke Pembrokeshire Marine code breakage policy agreed on by the majority consensus of all members Represent the sector at high level meetings e.g. Minister/WATO WATO – Feedback/link to Government Integral Part of an Evidenced based Sustainable Recreation toolkit developed by PCF / PCNPA and viewed as best practice by Government Research - Coasteering feasibility project Project Management: Attracted over £245,000 of funding from 19 different funders since 2002 Held 52 ‘Core’ meetings with OC and MC members Prepared 6 detailed business plans, 9 annual reports and 32 quarterly progress reports – Someone needs to spend time in the office!! Have to achieve funded outputs! Benefits/Feedback • Long term sustainability of outdoor activity in Pembrokeshire • Marketing – PCNPA/POCG all actively promote the providers who follow the membership criteria, Enjoy Pembs, Coast to Coast • Meetings promote joint working between all stakeholders inclusive of businesses • Provides instant access to conservation experts/landowners e.g. developing coasteering sites • Collaborative balanced approach to conflict resolution • Collaborative voice to represent sector at high level meetings – Importance/Access etc • Collaborative approach attracts funders • PCNPA/NRW/NT activity is being carried out using best practice • Education and awareness passed onto wider public • Partnership approach between conservation bodies/activity providers that is continually being strengthened • Involved in recreation planning • Partnership approach is possibly the only way for successful voluntary agreements/COC
