Secular music with Christian lyrics spell ApologetiX
May 2010 THE ANSWER ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Page 19 Secular music with Christian lyrics spell ApologetiX By Carol Sue Eklund The Answer Staff Writer What do you get when you mix secular music with a Christian sense of humor and a whole lot of energy? You get the band ApologetiX. ApologetiX, a band that makes Christian parodies out of hit secular songs, gets their message of salvation out to crowds that revel in the popular music. For instance, the popular song “Barbara Ann” from the Beach Boys becomes “Bah We’re Lambs.” By using tunes that people know and love, ApologetiX songs are useful for memorization, and others send a message of repentance or salvation. But whatever the song’s intention, the parody sounds incredibly like the original performances. A guest band at South Hills Community Church in Henderson last month, lead singer J. Johnson admitted that the original artists have mixed feelings for the style. “We are like fleas to them, they don’t think much about it. But generally speaking, the response from the original artists is positive,” he said. Johnson is one of the founding members of ApologetiX, and does the writing, sings lead, and sometimes plays guitar. He says that he got started writing parodies after he became a Christian. He wanted a way to remember Bible verses, stories, and things like the names of the books of the Bible in order, and thought that putting these things to music he was familiar with would help. This grew into what eventually would become ApologetiX. Despite having performed over 1100 concerts, this is only the group’s second performance in Tom Milnes, lead guitarist of ApologetiX. Nevada, having played once before in Reno. During the performance, each song was introduced with stories and humor. Towards the end of the performance, Tom Milnes, the lead guitarist, spoke of his experience in coming to Christ, and gave an invitation for anyone in the audience to do the same. Milnes is a youth pastor in his hometown of Ellwood City, PA. The name ApologetiX is based on a very old word called “apologetics” which originally meant “the defense of the Christian faith.” It comes from the word “apologia” which is in the original text of this Bible verse from the Apostle Peter: “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer (or defense or “apologia”) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15) After the concert, Rochelle Lewald, a member of South Hills, said, “What a fun concert! They sound just like the original artists, Churches of Southern Nevada Support Habitat for Humanity Special to The Answer Habitat for Humanity received a $4,500 donation from the Churches of Southern Nevada on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. The Christian non-profit organization was chosen as the charity to benefit from the inaugural CITYWIDE REVIVAL held from April 5-7 at Second Baptist Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. The CITYWIDE REVIVAL, under the leadership of the NV/CA Interstate Baptist Convention and the Pride of West District, featured inspiring and enriching sermons from Pastors Jason Mitchem, Bill McDonald and Dr. Ralph Williamson. “Our goal this year was to remind the community that we need to work together during these tough economic times,” said Rev. Sam Roberson, president of the NV/CA Interstate Baptist Convention. “Our partnership with Habitat For Humanity was vital in showing our community that we can rebuild and renovate the moral fabric of our communities.” Habitat For Humanity, is an international, ecumenical Christian, nongovernmental, non-profit organization devoted to building “simple, decent, and affordable” housing. Homes are built using volunteer labor and are sold at no profit. and the Christian lyrics they substitute are so clever!” Rochelle and her husband Ron were both given a chance to perform with the group on stage during one of the songs. A group of teenagers, who had come from North Las Vegas, were standing around with autographed CDs and T-shirts. “We’ve been ApologetiX fans for a long time!” they said. Cindy Harris of Boulder City, said, “They have so much energy! And it is amazing how much they sound like the original artists, even with all the different genres!” John Regan, another enthusiastic member of the audience, said, “What was said in between the songs was very good. Being familiar with the original tunes made the entire experience a blast!” ApolgetiX has put out 17 CDs, with parodies of songs from Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys, Queen, Ted Nugent, Kansas, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Kid Rock, The Hollies, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Joan Jett, Michael Jackson, Smash Mouth, Def Leppard, Ricky Martin and many others. Their music is available on line as well as in Christian bookstores, and Best Buy. They look forward to returning to Nevada sometime in the future. For more information, visit www.ApologetiX.com. Page 20 THE ANSWER May 2010 POLITICS Culture, Meet Kingdom By Juanita E. Davis The Answer Staff Writer God’s government (His Empire) was never intended to be contained. It is not intended to be contained within the four walls of church buildings, nor is it to be contained within the Church. The government of God was meant to be carried. “Carried where?” you might ask. It was and is intended by God to be carried upon the shoulders of the One Who is called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace – Jesus the Christ, the Light. God sits as Sovereign Ruler upon the throne of His empire, and He desires that His kingdom carries over into this earth. Earthen vessels are desired by God for that purpose. He desires them in order that Christ in and through them may carry the government upon His shoulders into a lost, broken, and dark world. One person who has embraced this truth is Carolyn Essex. Essex is currently campaigning for the office of North Las Vegas District 7 Assemblyperson. District 7 is comprised of communities from Decatur to Lamb on Craig and Lamb to Lake Mead and Michael Way. Although many may be familiar with the term, many are not aware of all that an assemblyperson does. “An assemblyperson is a neighborhood representative, who goes to the state capital (Carson City) SENATOR HARRY REID tim services personnel that are equipped to respond to children, youths, and adults. These programs have the resources and intent to foster partnerships between faith- and community-based organizations who are concerned about domestic violence in their communities. I have worked to ensure that Nevada has the support it needs to combat domestic violence by cosponsoring the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and supporting funding for the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA). FVPSA provides the majority of funding for emergency domestic violence services and shelters, while VAWA expands the federal government’s ability†to fight domestic violence. In addition to protecting and aiding victims, VAWA develops preventive programs that specialize in educating the public against domestic violence. I have requested that the Senate Appropriations Committee fully fund FVPSA for fiscal year 2011 to ensure the valuable support that this bill provides and continue aiding victims and their children. Domestic violence, whether physical, sexual or psychological, harms every member of the family. I am committed to programs and services that protect Nevada families and get them the help they need. A home should be a safe place, where love flourishes and children learn the value of healthy and caring relationships. Reid on domestic violence By Senator Harry Reid Special to The Answer As a child, I experienced firsthand the devastating impact of violent conflict in the household, and I want to help Nevada families facing the same struggle. Our state has the highest rate of violence against women in the nation. Las Vegasbased domestic violence agencies receive nearly 30,000 domestic violence crisis calls a year. Legislative programs and resources like funding for shelters are necessary to give refuge to victims and support healthy family life in the community. I helped secure millions of dollars to be spent this year for shelters, rape prevention, and community initiative programs on domestic violence. These programs will allow state-based services like the Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence to meet the needs of victims and strengthen effective law enforcement, prosecution strategies, and family services. They allow communities to hire and retain criminal justice and vic- +DSS\0RWKHUkV'D\ To Mother Loyce Hall From: Harriet, Anna Jean, Estralita, Curita, & Carruth II and the Greater St. Paul Family You are a Proverbs 31 Woman.. We all love you! l6KHLVDZRPDQRIVWUHQJWKDQGGLJQLW\ DQGKDVQRIHDURIROGDJHm3URY to advocate on behalf of the people. Some of the issues that they key in on are the state budget and services for residents. They would also introduce bills based on education and taxes,” says Essex. These are issues that individual households and entire neighborhoods and communities face and are affected by on an almost daily basis. The problem is that many do not know how to or whom to address concerning them. The assemblyperson would serve as the voice of the people. And because assemblypersons live within the districts that they represent, they would speak from the inside out and not the outside in. They are affected by the same issues and in much the same way as those whom they speak for. So, why did Essex choose secular government? “In the middle of the last (legislative) session (in Carson City), one of the topics that was discussed was budget cuts for children with disabilitiesÖI also saw seniors and the sick in attendance.” The seniors and the sick were not there as spectators. They were there, at the Grant Sawyer Building on Washington (which is the satellite location for those who are unable to go to Carson City), to plead their individual and collective cases before the ones who would decide whether or not budget cuts would be made. Those budget cuts would affect their livelihoods severely. As Essex witnessed this, she thought, “These people should be coming to the Church but are going to the government. And if the government doesn’t help them, they will be on the streets.” In essence, Essex did not choose government; but rather she chose to say, “Yes,” to the Lord, Who called and chose her. Carolyn Essex desires to not just make a difference in government, but she desires to make a Christ difference. That is what causes her to stand out. She has answered, “Yes,” to the command of so letting her light shine that men may see her good works and glorify the Father which is in heaven (Matthew 5:16). When asked how she might use her position as a venue for sharing her faith in God, she answered, “God will give me the words to say in any given situation.” She also went on to say that in answer to some who have told her that she cannot mix religion and politics, “My Lord said that if I am ‘ashamed of Him before men, that He will be ashamed of me before His Father’ (Matthew 10:32). I am concerned about pleasing my Father first.” Culture, meet Kingdom. (Early voting dates for this campaign are May 22 – June 4, 2010. Voting Day is June 8, 2010.) Working a family business has pushed the family to be flexible and patient. “I watched my Dad every step since they started planning and this was no joke,” said Jackson, a 21-year-old marketing major. “Besides all the responsibility of payroll, scheduling and things like that – my dad expects us to have a quality product and excellent customer service. And just because I’m his daughter doesn’t mean that I have any lead way in those areas; if anything, he expects even more from us,” she added. Spillman’s son, Russell III, 28year-old also works in the business. He relocated from Chicago in October 2009 to help start the business. This was his first time ever being in Las Vegas. He was instrumental working in the store prior to the opening. He found some of the local suppliers and vendors, helped with purchasing and setup of equipment, supervised the contractors as they performed the necessary work, and getting all of the various Nevada and Clark County business and Health licenses. Both Pullin and Spillman will tell you – “We would have never opened if it were not for Russell III relocating and handling business” Spillman has a younger son, Kevin, who works as a computer consultant with his father in Chicago. He said while the team is working to build a family business and teach their offspring the value of working hard, being the best is also important. “People come here to get a little bit of home. They talk about the Bulls, Bears, Cubs, White Sox, the Southside, the Westside and all the things about Chicago that make them remember home,” he said. “But the most important thing is to have that original taste of Harold’s. There are 70 franchises in Chicago and one in Las Vegas; we have the right taste!!” Both men share hints about opening a second restaurant in the future. However each one shares the same sentiments – ‘let us catch our breath.” However, with the help of KCEP’s Lena Love and the blessing from Christian Embassy Church (under the leadership of Pastor Carey Connors), the team is very thankful for all the support from Christian Embassy. “We definitely want to get ourselves more involved with the community and give back, and continue to partner with local business men and women” Spillman said. Meanwhile, for those looking to visit Chicago without leaving Las Vegas – Harold’s Chicken is the place. Shoot the breeze about all your Chicago favorites - White Castle, Pizza, Jays Potato Chips, the Chicago-Style Steppin scene or a 1/2 white with mild sauce. If visitors have changed their minds, it doesn’t change the visiting hours. They make that prisoner sit there for six hours until it’s time to take the other s back. And no one else is allowed to visit with them. It is very hurtful to watch; sometimes they just sit there and cry.” Rosa Estrada, the company’s administrative assistant, encourages all family members to have everything in order for the visit. “We spend hours sometimes preparing visitors by explaining the prison rules, telling them what to take, and just listening to them. Sometimes they just want to talk,” Estrada said. Both admit that while it can be heart wrenching listening to the stories, the emotional drain doesn’t compare to the reward received in helping others through tough times. “I prayed and asked God, what to say to people when they are going through this experience, what scripture can I give them to help them make it through – and He gave me 2 Corinthians 12:9 – ‘My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness.’ That’s what I tell them and that’s what keeps me going,” said Morrison.
