It gives me great pleasure to present Norfolk's 12th Black History Month (BHM)
programme, containing over 100 exciting events across the county this October as
we celebrate Black History past, present, and future.
The theme for 2015 Norfolk BHM is Black History - Inspiring Progress. We celebrate
Black History Past, Present and Future acknowledging the role of Black History as
inspirational force for progress in shaping and developing our present world in
social, artistic, cultural, economic aspects and bringing scientific and technological
advancements.
Our 2015 Norfolk Black History Month theme helps us to celebrate the contribution
of those pioneers who have been inspirational for progress locally, nationally and
internationally and acknowledge how far we've come, honour and pay homage.
Black History Month also allows us all to participate in Britain's rich and diverse
history, irrespective of ethnicity and allows us to appreciate and recognise the many
important and positive contributions made over the years by Black and Minority
Ethnic communities.
In order to understand our present, we must be able to appreciate and share our
past. We must celebrate black past, present and future to ensure that our past
continues to impact, improve, and secure our present, and give rise to our shared
future as we observe 100 years since the beginning of the First World War we also
remember the hundreds of thousands of men from Africa and the Caribbean who
came to Britain's aid in the fight for freedom. Their contribution has often been
overlooked but it is reassuring to know this is now changing with new projects, such
as Trench Brothers in London, which commemorates the lives of African-Caribbean
and other black and minority ethnic soldiers.
Whilst this year particularly been challenging due to budget cuts and constraint we
have managed to work on amazing program of events working with our partners for
all ages and interests. This year Black Heritage and Culture Norfolk in partnership
with Norfolk County Council, has supported a number of community events with
community groups being awarded £200 towards an event to celebrate this year's
theme.
This year we have organised Free lectures and talks in partnership with University of
East Anglia celebrating black women's contribution and achievements. The stories
of black women's lives, and the choices they made, encourage girls, boys, women
and men to think larger and bolder. Knowing women's achievements challenges
stereotypes and upends social assumptions about who women are and what women
can accomplish today.
Black History Month is not just about reflecting on the past. It is also a time to tackle
today's challenges and unlock tomorrow's opportunities. Norfolk Black History
Month is supported by communities and voluntary groups, statutory agencies such
as local authorities, museums, libraries and criminal justice agencies. I would like to
extend a special thank you to the support given by Norfolk County Council, Norfolk
Constabulary, Norwich City Council, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Writers'
Centre Norwich, Norfolk Library and Information Services, Zimbabwean Community
Association Norwich (ZIMCAN), NEAD, University of East Anglia, The Bridge Plus,
Norfolk Jazz and Blues Society, The Forum Trust, Café Bar Marzano, Creative Arts
East, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Cinema City, Norfolk Fire and
Rescue Service, Norwich Arts Centre, Future Radio, and various organisations and
community groups for their support in making Norfolk Black History Month one of
the best and well organised BHM celebrations nationally.
