PLEASE TAKE ACTION
TO SUPPORT PUBLIC
BROADCASTING
n 2010, Americans rated public broadcasting as an “excellent” use of taxpayer
dollars, second only to defense spending.
80% of those polled said funding for public
broadcasting is money “well spent.” *
Federal funding is the “lifeblood” of public
broadcasting, providing critical seed money
and basic operating support to local stations,
which then leverage each $1 of federal funding to raise over $6 from local sources—a
tremendous return on the taxpayer investment. Federal funding provides the margin of
revenue needed by local stations to produce
quality local programs and to make a market
for national producers.
Federal funding provides essential support
for public broadcasting’s mission to ensure
universal access to high-quality non-commercial programming that educates, informs,
enlightens, and enriches the public, with a
particular focus on the needs of underserved
audiences, including children and minorities.
This is particularly true for WBGO which uses
this funding to ensure that we have adequate
staff and other critical support for the New
York/New Jersey market’s only full time jazz
radio station.
Congressional efforts to eliminate federal
funding for Public Broadcasting will likely be
underway by the time you are reading this, as
the House was scheduled in February to consider legislation to fund the federal government for the remainder of this fiscal year.
The Continuing Resolution (CR), approved
during last fall’s lame duck session, expires
on March 4th. We expect the House
Appropriations Committee will recommend
a CR extension that includes a provision eliminating all funding for public broadcasting.
Please act today to send a clear message to
Congress: Funding for public broadcasting is
too important to eliminate. Please visit
www.170millionamericans.org to see a
sample letter and direct email your
Representative.

Wednesday, April 13 at 9pm. The composer and pianist NPR
calls “one of the greatest European musicians alive today”
lives in a suburb of Paris and has, at 83, lived an interesting life in jazz.
Born in Algeria, his amateur opera-singer mother introduced him to
music. He is largely self taught, though he did manage to take piano lessons after 1940 when Nazi race laws excluded him from school because
his father was Jewish. He moved to Paris in 1950 and worked there with Django Reinhardt,
Sidney Bechet, Don Byas and composed the score for Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 film, A Bout
de Souffle (Breathless).
Solal has only performed in New York a handful of times since the early 1960s. He made two
very beautiful recordings at the Village Vanguard - with his trio shortly after September 11th,
2001, and the first solo piano recording ever made from the club in 2009. Now, we'll get to
hear him in duo with bassist Francois Moutin. Don’t miss this rare opportunity as Josh
Jackson hosts Martial Solal Live at the Village Vanguard, Wednesday, April 13 at 9pm on
WBGO Jazz 88.3FM and www.wbgo.org.

said. The second half of the show features “icons and issues”, in-depth, 30minute conversations with legendary
leaders, artists and thinkers—and people on the front lines of issues close to
the hearts of Smiley & West.
Smiley & West will replace Riverwalk
Jazz on WBGO, Saturday mornings
