A MESSAGE FROM THE
Villa Maria Academy
I
n the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 7, Jesus gives us the
parable of the Wise and Foolish Builders whereby he
teaches us the importance of hearing his words and putting
them into practice. Those who do are like the man who
builds his house on rock; those who do not are like the man
who builds his house on sand. In the midst of life’s storms
and challenges, the house built on rock survives, whereas the
house built on sand collapses.

Each year Villa Maria Academy graduates young adults who
have satisfied not only the school’s academic requirements, but those who also possess
the qualities that reflect Villa’s long-standing tradition of Faith, Family, Excellence and
Tradition. The Class of 2012 are most recently and proudly exhibiting the qualities of a
Villa graduate. Among those qualities are moral integrity, leadership, service to others,
and most especially, being a reflection of the principles of our faith and the school’s
mission. In other words, a graduate who possesses a Villa diploma is indeed a person
of distinction. Those graduates, armed with a Villa diploma, have a solid foundation
upon which they can build their life and career. However, what ultimately makes that
foundation so firm and strong is the fact that at its core, Villa Maria, as a Catholic school,
reflects Gospel values and the teachings of Jesus Christ – and that is the essence of what is
instilled in our students and graduates and what truly forms the foundation of their lives.
Undoubtedly, you have read many stories about various students and alumni who have
been highlighted in this magazine, including those you will read about in this issue. In
many ways, they are representative of the Villa Maria family. They have come from varied
walks of life and have embarked on a broad range of careers and have lived through
an assortment of experiences in life. Yet, in the midst of all of this diversity, there is a
common thread – each in his or her own way reflects the mission of Villa Maria – a
mission established by the Sisters of St. Joseph back in 1892 and as vibrant and alive and
needed today as ever before. Like all of our students and alumni, they have been given a
strong foundation composed of a faith in God and the teachings of Jesus Christ, a thirst
for knowledge and academic preparedness, and a drive for excellence that discourages
them from settling for mediocrity.
Villa Maria Academy is not primarily in the business of building houses or office
buildings, but it is indeed involved in the mission of building lives and giving our
students a firm foundation for the future. In this issue of the Essence, you will once
again read stories about our alumni and students. Take note of the fact that they have all
built their lives on a stable foundation that will indeed help them weather the storms of
life while also supporting them as they live out their dreams and goals. I speak for all
of us at Villa Maria in expressing gratitude for all the various people, past and present,
who have helped to build the solid foundation in the lives of our students. These Villa
graduates do go on to make a positive difference in the world.
God bless!

COVER STORY
Class of 2012
Building the Foundation
for Our Future
S
ince 1892 Villa Maria Academy has been doing
what they do best, providing students with a
solid foundation to build their future on. On May
31, fifty-seven eager graduates walked into St. Jude
Church with bright smiles on their faces to receive
their much-anticipated diplomas. The women were
draped in white, flowing gowns while the men wore
tuxedos. It was the day that they have been dreaming
about since they stepped foot into Villa as freshmen.
President Father Scott Jabo and Principal Sr. Mary
Drexler, SSJ presented seniors with their diplomas and
project medals. Diplomas and medals aside, where
are they headed? Two seniors reflect on their years at
Villa.
Rosa Fatica, this year’s May Queen, is proud of her Villa
education. “Villa has provided me with the foundation
to start college. From my education, to my faith life, to
my personal life—Villa has given me the foundation to
move forward and start college.”
While at Villa, the teachers have prepared Fatica to
work hard by going above and beyond in her studies.
Fatica said, “They have provided me with the tools I
need to accomplish many things. Spiritually, the sisters,
priests, and mentors at Villa have helped me to grow
in my faith by providing a one-of-a-kind spiritual
atmosphere. In my personal life, I have matured into a
young woman of character through my experiences at
Villa.” Fatica is attending Seton Hill College in Greensburg,
PA, and is majoring in elementary education/special
education, and it’s no wonder. She said, “I was inspired
by many of my teachers. I found myself going back
to the idea of having the opportunity to inspire others
just as my teachers have inspired me, so I decided
that teaching would be a good fit. I cannot imagine
anything more fulfilling than having the ability to
change a child’s life through education and instilling in
that child the self-confidence to be true to who they
are and to succeed.” Although she is eager about her
new journey, she will miss Villa.
Fatica received several scholarships; including the
Seton Hill Rising Star Award, Caritas Award for Service,
the Seton Hill Education Division Scholarship and the
Elizabeth Seton Presidential Scholarship.
She recalls her four years at Villa. As a freshman, Fatica
said, “I was beyond nervous! Leaving Villa as a senior,
I have no doubt in my mind that going to Villa was
the absolute best decision I have made. It is difficult
to explain how special the Villa experience truly is,
but I know that I would not take it back for the world.
Angela (Engro) ’79, Rosa ’12 and Chris Fatica ’81 (CP).

FALL 2012
“It is difficult to explain how special the Villa
experience truly is, but I know that I would
not take it back for the world.” Rosa Fatica
to start her new journey. She is a freshman at
Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI majoring
in communications. Rahner received the Magis
scholarship from Marquette. She selected
communications because it has many career
opportunities, and she believes being a skilled
communicator is important in any aspect of
life. Rahner said, “I definitely feel that Villa has
provided me a solid foundation to start college
in more ways than just one. Not only do I feel
academically prepared, but Villa has helped transform
me into the person I am today. Because of Villa, I have
confidence and integrity which will take me far in
college and beyond.“
Elizabeth Nawrocki.
Leaving Villa as a senior, I feel that I have grown
into a young woman of faith, integrity, and family.
Without Villa I would not be the young woman I am
today, and I am so thankful to be a part of the Villa
family.“
Rahner recalls her time as a freshman. “Starting here
as a freshman was a bit intimidating, as it is starting
at any new place. But soon enough I was able to call
Villa my second home. Over the four years I spent
at Villa, I was surrounded by people who taught
me things I will take with me in everything I do.
As a senior, I questioned why I was ever a scared
freshman. The Villa family welcomes everyone with
open arms, and we are all so lucky to be surrounded
by such incredible people. I am sad to leave, but I
know I will always have my Villa family.“
Although Fatica has countless memories from her
four years, one of her most cherished memories
was being selected as this year’s May Queen. “In my
time at Villa I strived to be everything the May Queen
embodied, but to actually be selected as the May
Queen was an honor, an honor that I did not expect
in a million years. I am still humbled by this honor,
and I am thankful every day for my Villa family for
giving me the chance to be May Queen. Having
this experience has given me the chance to show
my appreciation for our Mother Mary and for my
Villa family. I would like to thank all those who have
helped me grow in my faith, most of all my family,
because they are the reasons I was given this honor.”
With her high school diploma behind her,
Rosa’s classmate Nathalie Rahner couldn’t wait

This past year, Rosa and Nathalie girls their Senior
Project together. They raised funds for “She’s the First”,
a non-profit organization that raises money to send
girls to school in South Sudan. They baked nearly
2,000 cupcakes and sold them at various locations and
events to raise the money. They raised over $1,500!
The icing on the cake is the fact that four young
women in South Sudan will benefit from all of their
hard work for one year. They will be the first in their
families to go to school.
All in all, the Class of 2012 has left an indelible mark on
Villa. Class Speaker was Adrienne Kloecker, and the
Outstanding Honor Graduate was Elizabeth Nawrocki.
They shared memories with the Class of 2012.
Kloecker spoke about the unity of the class. She
said, “Throughout our years at Villa, unity has been
the strongest aspect of our class. This characteristic
of unity was not just formed by chance, but it was
established in our roots at Villa Maria Academy. The
Sisters of Saint Joseph hold the idea of unity on the top
of their list. In their constitution it says, ‘We are women
who affirm our mission of unity of neighbor with
neighbor and neighbor with God.’”
“Over the four years I spent at Villa, I was
surrounded by people who taught me things
I will take with me in everything I do. As
a senior, I questioned why I was ever a
scared freshman. The Villa family welcomes
everyone with open arms and we are all so
lucky to be surrounded by such incredible
people. I am sad to leave, but I know I will
always have my Villa family.”
Elizabeth Nawrocki spoke about her time at VMA. She
said, “Villa has provided us with the perfect template
on which we can base our lives. We have been given
a perfectly balanced high school career and are called
to carry out that balance for the rest of our lives.”
Bishop Donald Trautman and President Fr. Scott Jabo
spoke to the class. Both wished the Class of 2012 well
on all of their future endeavors.
Congratulations to the entire class who received $2.1
million in scholarships, (that’s approximately $38,181
per student); 96% are going to college.
Although the class will forge ahead on their new
journey, they will always remember Villa Maria
Academy, the school that has given them a
foundation for life to continue to build their future.

The Scope on the Newly Renovated
Science Lab at VMA
By Christine Eddy
F
or years, Villa science teachers have been assigning projects to
their students. This summer Villa Maria Academy took on an
enormous science project of its own. This one resulted in quite
an extraordinary face-lift that is giving students a leg up on their
education.
The renovation included seven classrooms and a state-of-theart science lab. Workers dove into the project right after school
let out in June. They had their noses to the grind stone right up
until a few days before the start of the new school year, to ensure
students a top-notch science wing. The renovations included
everything from top to bottom–the ceilings, the walls and the
floors. Everything was completely modernized. The floors are
now white and blue tile. The cabinets have been refurbished and
all electric has been updated. The lighting has sensors that will
help save on electricity.
Head of the Science Department, Ms. Meghan Fuhrman ’99, could
not wait to begin teaching in the new atmosphere. She said, “I
have never been so excited to start a school year! I look forward to
our students reactions when they see how the old biology lab has
been transformed into a dream come true. I was honored to help
design the room, and now I am truly giddy to get in there and use
the lab to its fullest potential. The students have no idea what
amazing things are headed for them!”
Even though there have been countless updates to the second
floor, Villa refurbished much of the preexisting cabinetry. The
colossal-sized, sturdy, wooden storage cabinets look great. They
simply cannot compare to the ones that are for sale today. This
not only saved money, but it helped to preserve the character of
the previous cabinets.
8
The Magazine for Villa Maria Academy
FALL 2012
So what does this new lab mean for our students? Aside from the
obvious cosmetic changes, it means much more to VMA students.
They will have more opportunities for hands-on experience.
Fuhrman said, “We designed the lab so that the students could
literally be immersed in the lab experience. With lab and lecture
at the same tables, the students get the feeling of what it is like
to be a research scientist. Many science careers have similar
environments.”
This lab features several things that the other lab did not offer.
Each lab table has hot water and natural gas. The new lab features
15 new college-grade microscopes. A dishwasher has been
installed for clean glassware to ensure more accurate lab results.
There is a new lab prep area for the teacher. The lab also has
an overhead projector and screen, and let’s not forget the two
classroom pets...gerbils.
Students that were here last year have a whole new “Science
world” to adapt to. The lab, which was once a dark and dreary
eyesore, is now a bright facility which will offer students significant
hands-on learning opportunities.

Prep and Villa unveiled their new website, www.prep-villa.com, in September. The new website is out of this world and features
many bells and whistles that the other site did not.
The first thing you’ll notice is the website address has changed. You can now find us at www.prep-villa.com. This page is the
landing page. From there, you will be directed to choose which site you want to go to.
Both the Villa and Prep websites were designed by Finalsite to make them more user-friendly for our guests. The sites now
feature improved navigation. We hope you find it easier to browse our content, make meaningful connections with members of the
Villa and Prep communities around the globe, and turn inspiration into action.
We are excited about this website because it offers something the other
website did not…an on line community! This will help keep you in the
loop about things at Villa and Prep and also help keep us updated on
what is going on in your life.
The new website offers a clean, easy-to-navigate interface and a
sense of uniformity for both Villa and Prep. The new site allows users
to see all events/articles categorized for school, alumni and students.
Registration is more streamlined and easier to use. Parents, students

iPad program are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the
innovation that is attracting prospective families and students to Villa
and Prep.
In addition, several new programs and policies put in place to
guarantee our students’ academic and social success have been
well-received by current Villa and Prep families. A crucial part
of maintaining enrollment is ensuring that each student remains
successful in the classroom with the ultimate goal of enrolling in
the college of their choice after graduation. The programs that have
been recently initiated have seen tremendous success, and word is
spreading amongst middle school families that are choosing a high
school for their sons and daughters.
All of the aforementioned are crucial factors in the increase in
enrollment at Villa and Prep, but the most significant cause is
definitely the current students and families sharing their positive
experiences with others. Word-of-mouth is by far the most effective
form of marketing. There is no source more credible than our
alumni, parents, students, and other constituents who have seen and
experienced first-hand the benefits and advantages of being a student
and graduate of Villa and Prep. In fact, most inquiries received by
the admissions office were referred by a current or past Villa/Prep
family that wants to see others have the same experience.
Although we have seen remarkable progress with the enrollment
over recent years, it has still been a struggle to achieve our current
results. Villa and Prep have adapted to the changing times and have
found ways to assist families afford tuition in a bad economy, but
there are still several challenges facing the future and many obstacles
that need to be overcome.
It is not difficult at all to convince parents that Villa and Prep
provide a much better alternative than the public schools and the
other educational options in the area. It is not difficult at all to find
students who want to attend Villa and Prep because of our advanced
curriculum, college placement track, athletics and arts programs, and
social status of being a student at our esteemed school. By far, the
biggest challenge is finding families that are willing and able to make
the financial sacrifice to provide their children with a Prep or Villa
education.
The actual cost to educate a student at Villa and Prep is around
$11,000, but due to the generous support of our alumni, parents,
and other constituents we are able to give every family a scholarship
of roughly $3,500. Combine that with the nearly $1,000,000 in
tuition assistance annually distributed to Villa and Prep families, it is
still difficult for many to make ends meet.
Another challenge we are facing is the decreasing number of students
enrolled in our Diocesan grade schools. Approximately two-thirds
of students enrolled at Villa and Prep have matriculated from the
Catholic grade schools. There have been ups and downs in recent
years with our local Catholic grade school numbers, however the
trend over several years has been a steady downward spiral.
Not only are the Catholic grade school students some of the top
in our classes, they typically come from faithful families that value
Catholic education and are willing to sacrifice financially for the
good of their sons’ and daughters’ futures. The decrease in the size
of our Catholic grade school graduating classes has unquestionably
had an impact on the past enrollment numbers: and, will most
definitely be one of the most significant factors for the future.
Although there are many challenges in the future and at times the
outlook may seem bleak, it is not the first time that Villa Maria
and Cathedral Prep have had to triumph over the odds. Instead of
giving up, accepting that times have changed, and believing Catholic
education is a thing of the past, we are constantly exploring new
methods to make certain we continue to fulfill our mission, and we
will settle for nothing less than excellence.
Villa Maria and Cathedral Prep have a long, storied past, and the
future is bright. With the support of our administrators, faculty, staff,
students, parents, alumni, and all constituents we will make certain
that our school continues to be a formidable educational force for
generations to come.

Marleen Scully ’54
Making a Difference in the
Lives of Others
By Christine Eddy
D
uring her time at Villa Maria Academy, Marleen
Walach Scully ’54 can remember learning the
importance of giving back. She remembers dusting
desks and cleaning chalkboards, and she appreciates
the fact that she was taught this lesson, for it helped
her to become the person she is today. She said,
“I was surrounded by so many wonderful lay and
religious women at Villa, and I feel that they were a
tremendous part in forming the person I am today.”
Scully graduated from Villa in 1954. She went on to
Saint Vincent School of Nursing and graduated in
1957. She was married in 1958 and has five children.
Her daughter Shelia Scully Mack graduated from
Villa in 1979 and her daughter Erin Scully Marshall
graduated from Villa in 1984.
Class of 1954.

Scully has three sons. Her son Sean went to East,
and her sons Brian and Keith graduated from
Cathedral Prep. Brian graduated in ’78 followed by
Keith in ’82.
Scully worked at Saint Vincent’s for several years
on general and private duty. She worked eight years
for Dr. Norbert Alberstadt. She worked 20 years for
the Soldiers and Sailors Home. Scully embraced her
work and felt like it was her ministry. She retired in
1999.
Now that she’s retired, she serves as an Associate
of the Sisters of St. Joseph. The program offers
opportunities for those not called to the profession
of evangelical vows to intensify their commitment
to the mission of Jesus Christ. She enjoys this
ministry very much. She also volunteers at Saint
Paul’s soup kitchen.
Not only does Scully give back by helping others,
but she gives back financially to Villa. She said, “I
give back as much I can so others will have the same
opportunity that I had. I believe that in life, you
have to pay it forward.”
Marleen’s granddaughter,
Rachel Scully, was
valedictorian in 2011.
When she is not
volunteering, she enjoys
spending time with her
ten grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
She is extremely proud of
them. Her granddaughter
Rachel Scully graduated in
Villa in 2011 and was class
valedictorian.
Her granddaughter Jennifer Scully Bond graduated
from Villa in 2002. Her granddaughter Abigail
Mack is a freshman at Villa this year, and her
grandson Marshall Mack graduated from Cathedral
Prep in 2010. She enjoys travelling and loves
visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Scully served as president of her class. Her daughter
Erin followed in her footsteps and was class president
her senior year. Scully remains close with her class.
She credits the late Sr. Kathleen Blair as being a
catalyst in keeping the class together. Scully said,
“She had blue and white blood.”
Scully was very humbled about being interviewed.
She is a good representative of her close-knit
class. She said, “I come from a wonderful class. I
am humbled to be in the company of so many
wonderful women.” The Class of 1954 gets together
quite often. They also have a prayer line for their
classmates. When someone passes, the class attends
Mass and they meet afterward for lunch or dinner.
Scully said, “I take great pride in my children. Not
only because of their accomplishments, but because
they are men and women of faith.” She likes
to spend a great deal of her time helping out her
children.
The old adage “It’s better to give than receive” rings
true for Scully. She enjoys going out of her way
and helping others. She doesn’t expect anything
in return, but a smile from a thankful person shows
that she is really making a difference in someone’s
life, and that is the greatest feeling in the world.

The Nicolias
A Villa/Prep Dynamic Duo
By Christine Eddy
W
as it Carl Nicolia’s ’80 freestyle or Jackie Giacobello’s ’80
backstroke that brought this Villa/Prep couple together
following their freshman year? Swim goggles aside, the two met
at the Erie Olympic swimming pool and spent the entire summer
hanging out together. By the end of summer, they were a couple.
Carl and Jackie dated continuously throughout high school
and college. Following graduation, Jackie attended Penn State
Behrend, and Carl attended Pitt and Gannon University. Carl
went on to earn his master’s degree in engineering.
After dating for over seven years, Carl and Jackie wed on June
11, 1983. Their bridal party consisted of their close friends, who
were also Prep and Villa graduates: Shelly Dodick Mikotowicz
’80, Mary Karen Demarco ’80, Janelle Giacobello Fenogletto ’77,
Joy Giacobello Galvin ’75, Ray Nicolia Jr. ’85 (CP), Joe Giacobello
’81 (CP), Bo Stevenson ’80 (CP), Brian Zielinski ’80 (CP), Mike
Dudenhoeffer ’80 (CP), and Jim Bifulco ’80 (CP).
The Nicolias have three children. They are thankful for the
education that Villa and Prep has provided to each of them. The
Nicolias said, “We have three fantastic children, all of whom
were well-prepared for college and their future because of the
education and experiences they received at Villa and Prep.”
Teresa, 25, graduated from Villa in 2004. She attended Penn State
University and graduated with a B.S. in communication sciences
and disorders and a minor in human development and family
studies. She continued her education by earning her master’s
degree in speech pathology from Bloomsburg University. She is
currently living and working in Chicago.
Jackie and Carl Nicolia.
Their daughter Christina, 23, graduated from Villa in 2007. She
went on to get her B.S. in industrial operations engineering from
the University of Michigan. She is currently working for Dow
Agrosciences in Indianapolis.
Their son Mario, 18, graduated from Prep in 2012. He attends
the University of Pittsburgh and plans to study neuroscience.
The Nicolias said, “Prep’s affiliation with Gannon University has
given him the opportunity to enter Pitt with a significant number
of college credits, giving him a head start.” Mario is featured on
the front cover of the Cathedral Prep Magazine. He and Alex
Brzozowski won the Tennis State Championship this year!
The Nicolias’ marriage works because they have always
supported each other.
Jackie worked at the Gertrude A. Barber Center and supported
the family while Carl finished his senior year at Gannon
University. She went on to work at two nursing homes in
Michigan before dedicating her time to being a stay-at-home
mom.
Carl is the vice president of the North American Water Treatment
Group for Rexnord Corporation. He is responsible for leading
businesses located in Pittsburgh, PA, Dallas, TX, Orange MA,
Magog, Quebec, and Evanston, IL, he spends most of his time
traveling outside of Erie. Travel has always been a significant
part of his career, even when based in Erie, working with GE or
as the president of Zurn Industries. Jackie said, “Even though
Carl often worked outside of Erie, he was fortunate to be able
to attend many events with the kids as they were growing up,
and we rarely missed a volleyball match, basketball game, or
tennis match. The work ethic, drive, and determination that
have contributed to Carl’s successful career grew from the strong
academic, moral, and social foundations he developed at Prep.”
The Nicolias have centered their lives around Villa and Prep.
They started as teenagers and students, building lasting
friendships and memories, then, as parents and supporters,
working to pass on those traditions to their children. They
said, “For us it has worked, and our lives would certainly not be
the same without the influence of these two institutions. The
faith, work ethic, traditions, and friendships have all positively
influenced our family and us.”

Fr. Jabo visits NYC!
Fr. Scott Jabo “melted away his little town blues” with a fun evening in New York
City! Along with Chris Hagerty ’75 (CP), Director of Advancement, and Nancy Bird
’84, Director of Constituent Relations, Fr. Jabo hosted an alumni reception on May 2,
2012 for Villa and Prep graduates currently living or working in the area. The event
was hosted at The Yale Club in Manhattan, sponsored by Cathedral Prep grad Patrick
McGill ’02. The party was complimentary for Villa and Prep alums, who were treated
to hors d’oeuvres and beverages while reconnecting with other former Erieites who
now live in “the city that never sleeps”!
A slide show ran throughout the evening showcasing updates to Prep’s and Villa’s
facilities, current students, a variety of school activities and athletic events, and alumni
activities such as Reunion Weekend and Legacy Gala. Fr. Jabo “started spreading the
news” about the latest and greatest happenings at Villa and Prep. He briefed guests
about the new Apple iPad initiative, renovations over the past few years, and future
plans. He ended by fielding a few questions from the audience.
The New York City reception drew alumni from many decades. We enjoyed the
company of Joe Grumblatt ’41 (CP) and his daughter Catherine, in addition to a
more recent group of Cathedral Prep ’07 grads (Andrew Bauman, Ted Miller and TJ
Fessler). Brothers Tim ’78 (CP) and Kevin ’83 (CP) Gallagher joined in the fun. Donna Quadri-Felitti ’79 got a kick out
of seeing her Dad, Dick Quadri ’52 (CP), featured in the slide show (he and Chuck Dahlkemper ’52 (CP) were honored
at last year’s Rambler Golf Classic!). There were even a few Villa and Prep marriages represented, such as Al ’58 (CP)
and Judy Spaeder Kendziora ’59. Fun stories were exchanged among all alumni! Thank you to our NYC-area alums for
taking time out of your busy schedules to join us.

Where will Fr. Jabo visit next? CHICAGO! The alumni reception is scheduled for
Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the picturesque Chicago Yacht Club from 6:30 p.m.
– 8:30 p.m. If you live or work in/near the Windy City, make sure we have your

Villa and Prep Take the Plunge
at Bay Swim 2012
Out of three hundred participants at this year’s Bay Swim, over
thirty of them were from Villa Maria Academy and Cathedral Prep.
The fifth annual one-mile swim across Presque Isle Bay took place
on June 30. This event continues a great celebration of health
and fitness for the swimmers who make the crossing, as well as,
importantly, a celebration of the health of Presque Isle Bay.
Ethan Louis ’13 (CP), Martin Zegarelli ’12 (CP), Xavier Augustiniak ’11 (CP), Ethan
Chase ’09 (CP) and Eli Chase ’15 (CP).
In 2008, after twenty plus years of significant effort on the part
of many governmental entities, environmentally concerned
groups and individuals, the water of Presque Isle Bay was
finally “reclaimed” with the status of “swimmable” water quality
achieved. The Bay Swim has become a tradition and a great kickoff to the summer season in Erie.
The swim began at Presque Isle State Park at the Vista III Boat
Launch and ended at Erie Yacht Club.
We are proud of our participants!

Congratulations to Villa graduate Abby Sorensen who was named Gannon
University’s head golf coach in July.
Sorensen credits Villa for helping her to reach this lofty goal. Sorenson said,
“Villa was a very formative part of my golf career that led to this coaching
opportunity.”
While at Villa, Sorensen lettered four times in golf and softball. She was also
valedictorian of her class at VMA. Sorensen helped lead the 2007 golf team to
a state runner-up finish.
She attended Penn State for one semester and then went on to Allegheny
College where she graduated last spring. She served as the valedictorian with
a 3.95 grade point average. While there she was a four-year letter winner and
played an integral part in helping the golf team secure its fifth consecutive
top-10 finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships in May. As
a result, Allegheny became the first program across any NCAA division to
qualify for the national championships its first seven years as a varsity sport.
Best of luck to Abby!

We Remembered, Reminisced, and Reconnected at
VMA Reunion Weekend 2012!
C
lassmates from near and far convened the weekend of July
20-22, 2012 to celebrate the anniversaries of their Villa Maria
Academy graduations. Alumni were invited to kick off REUNION
WEEKEND 2012 with “Party on the Patio” on Friday night, July 20
at VMA. Due to uncooperative weather, the party was set up in the
renovated gymnasium instead of the patio. A delicious picnic dinner
provided by Chef Frank Cirillo and the VMA cafeteria staff featuring
a gourmet pasta salad, Erie’s own Smith’s hot dogs, bbq pulled pork,
and other summer fare was enjoyed by guests. DJ Benjamin Jefferys
’12 (CP) of BLJ Entertainment entertained the crowd with music
selections from throughout the years. As the evening unfolded, the
weather improved, and many guests did enjoy some visiting on the
patio!
Alum as young as the Class of 2007 and as wise at the Class of 1947
joined in for the fun Friday party. Tables were reserved for specific
classes to make finding classmates easy. Interesting memorabilia
and photos were displayed from the span of years beginning when
Villa opened its doors in 1892 to the present. Uniforms ranging
from the 60s Peter Pan-colored navy zip dresses, to the short-lived
70s brown tweed wool suit, and the 80s indestructible (unless
accidentally melted while attempting to iron!) heather blue polyester
uniform, to the cool pinstriped skirts of the 90s were available for
modeling!
Saturday provided time for each class to celebrate with just their
individual classmates. Venues all over town were filled with
Villa girls, excited to reconnect and reminisce! The Class of ’62
celebrated their 50th reunion with an entire day of fun. The gals
hosted a luncheon at the Erie Yacht Club overlooking the bay. Over
70 classmates attended. After lunch they celebrated Mass together
at St. Jude the Apostle. The Class of ’62 ended the beautiful summer
day with a party at classmate M. Theresa (and husband Dick)
Zamboldi’s home.
Other classes convened for a variety of summer fun. The Class of
’67 met for a picnic at Presque Isle, while the ladies from ’52 dined
at Lake Shore Country Club. Classmates from ’72 enjoyed the
summer day at Jrs. On the Bay…the Class of ’87 gathered there later
in the evening. The girls from ’82 had a fun night at Calamari’s, while
the Class of ’92 spent the evening at the Colony Bar and Grille.
Classmates from ’97 had some fun at the Plymouth…while the Class
of ’07 started their night at the Sandbar Drafthouse and Grille!
To wrap up Reunion Weekend 2012, friends and families joined
together for Mass on Sunday, July 22. Fr. Scott Jabo, President of
Villa Maria Academy, celebrated Mass in the renovated Villa Maria
Academy auditorium. It was a great way to observe Villa’s traditions
of community and faith. A delicious brunch followed in the Villa
Cafeteria. The entire school was open to tour after brunch, and
the Villa Victor Spirit Store was open for those interested in taking
home a VMA souvenir. Alumnae and their families enjoyed the
bright new hallways and Villa blue lockers. Others “oohed and
aahed” over the new fitness center overlooking the gymnasium. The
favorite addition for most Villa alums was the new chapel. Some
commented that it is most appropriately positioned at the front
entrance of the school…easily accessible to all students and visitors…
and representative of the faith formation that Villa is built on.

FALL 2012
We were thrilled to have members of the Class of ’62 attend the 2012
Villa Maria Academy commencement exercises. As part of a yearlong celebration of their 50th reunion year, representatives from the
VMA Class of ’62 were on hand to show their support of this year’s
graduates. The alumnae met in the Founder’s Room at St. Jude the
Apostle Church. They were treated to corsages and Villa alumni pins
before filing into the church. For one Class of ’62 alum it was an extra
special night. Nancy Shrum Kelly ’62 was in attendance not only as
a Class of ’62 graduate, but as the proud grandmother of Elizabeth
Nawrocki ’12 (daughter of Mary Beth Kelly Nawrocki ’83). Elizabeth
delivered the commencement address with classmate Adrienne
Kloecker ’12. She also was the recipient of the Bishop’s Award for the
Outstanding Honor Graduate and the SSJ Unity Award. Thank you to
the ladies from the Class of ’62 who attended!

Memories
Fourteen-year old girls off to a new adventure
A brand new school year – we will be the first to spend four years here.
Riding buses to and from,
Halls full of chatty girls silenced by the sisters.
From a one-room classroom to changing classes and the homeroom experience.
Mission awareness, student council, meeting new friends.
UNIFORMS!!! Starched collars and cuffs.
Class of 1982.
Class of 1997.
We are becoming Villa Girls.
Daily lunch in the cafeteria (conversation permitted).
Having grown up in a German household, I tasted spaghetti for the first time.
Unbelievable, but true!
Square dancing on Friday nights – what fun!
Semi-formal and later formal dances, making my own prom dresses.
Friday afternoon assemblies, sewing and cooking classes with Sr. Rosaline.
Learning to “darn” socks and clothes.
Who even uses that word anymore?
Four years of Latin study (yes, it does come in handy for the rest of your life)
Singing the French National Anthem in Sr. Leonie’s class.
Composing the first poem of my life in Sr. Christine’s English class
Agonizing over Algebra with Sr. Grace Marie.
Observing the nuns gliding in the halls.
Occasionally walking to the West Erie Plaza to browse after school.
Busing home by way of a transfer.
But most days to the conservatory to practice piano
in glass-walled rooms under my teacher’s watchful eye, creating in me a lifetime love of music.
Mass in the chapel, our classmates’ decisions to enter convent life, so secret, so sacred.
Now they celebrate 55 years of religious life – so special.
Class of 2002.
Joann Maxwell’s décor for our proms – only she knew the secret of that crepe paper ceiling!
Our parents’ trust and constant support of our Catholic education.
In the tedium of classes and homework, the absolute fun of friends,
cokes and fries at the College Inn while dancing to jukebox music,
slumber parties and beach cottages and duties of home life, our lives passed so quickly
No real questions about life were asked – no real answers were given.
Yet here we are 55 years later – so fortunate to have our health
and contented to grow older.
Class of 2007.
I express gratitude to those who taught us – to those who loved us
and to those who allowed us to become.

FALL 2012
Breaks Attendance Record
By Matt Grisier ’12 (CP)
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast marked the end of Villa Maria Academy and
Cathedral Prep’s 2011-2012 MVP season. The show was, by far, the most
ambitious and expensive in the program’s history. Fortunately, the enormous
amount of time and effort spent on every last detail of the show, from the massive
sets and beautiful costumes to the intricate dance numbers, paid off as the show
broke every attendance record for a Villa-Prep production. The story of the show
is familiar enough, as it follows Disney’s 1991 animated film very closely. Belle, a
young, bookish woman, finds herself a prisoner in the castle of a hideous Beast
and his servants, who have been transformed into talking household objects.
The Beast was once a handsome prince; he was changed into his monstrous form
when he refused an enchantress shelter for the night. Until the Beast can find true
love, he will be condemned to remain transformed-and-alone-forever.
Elise Chase ’12 as Belle and Ben Jefferys ’12 (CP) as the Beast.
Matt Grisier ’12 (CP) as Gaston.
Villa students Katie Mischler ’14, Natalie Prischak ’15,
Kim Maasz ’12, Ellise Chase ’12, Jennifer Torrance ’12 and
Anna Lacy ’15.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast requires an enormous amount of effort to be pulled
off properly. Our production had so many people working behind the scenes and
on the stage that it would be impossible to name absolutely everyone. When the
show began, the first thing the audience heard was the sound of the full orchestra,
under the baton of Mr. Jacob Malec. The orchestra numbered over twenty
musicians, a feat usually unheard of in high school productions. The set design,
by Gretchen Petrarca, was no less impressive. Its centerpiece was a massive castle,
which was absolutely breathtaking. The “West Wing” portion of the set even
detached from the rest of the castle during the Beast’s dramatic Act One finale, “If
I Can’t Love Her.” It was truly a triumphant achievement in design. Susan Chase
and Mary Listerman also deserve credit for fighting tooth and nail with various
costuming companies to secure the best possible outfits for the iconic characters.
It is not easy to dress actors up as dancing candlesticks and talking clocks, but
that never deterred our costumers. Their efforts, along with Andrea Hallman’s
makeup design for the Beast, helped bring the film’s animated characters to life.
I truly believe that what fully set this production apart, however, was the
excellence of the entire cast. Fr. Mike DeMartinis, Mrs. Carolyn McIntyre, and
Mr. Andrew Alesso assembled and led an incredibly professional group of talent.
Nobody let their guard down or delivered a lackluster performance during the
entire run. I can think of very few shows where every person in the cast gave one
hundred percent of their time, talent, and energy to the production. Disney’s
Beauty and the Beast was a rare exception. The entire cast truly combined to
create hundreds of memorable moments for the 2,732 people who filled the seats
of the H. David Bowes Auditorium during our run. From the mysterious opening
prologue, to the rousing mug dance, to the spectacle of “Be Our Guest,” the entire
cast pulled out all the stops to make Disney’s Beauty and the Beast a very special
experience for everyone involved. It’s a show I know I will never forget; it was the
most perfect way for my fellow seniors and me to say “good-bye” to the Villa-Prep
theater program.

MVP Announces
2012-13 Theatre Season
Theater at Villa and Prep is not just alive and well, it’s on fire! There’s something for everyone to see and for
everyone to be part of. The 2012-2013 Season: Ground-breaking, Innovative, Diverse, Challenging, Classic,
Smart, Inspirational and Memorable.
The tragedy of Macbeth, a fall play by William Shakespeare,
will be presented at Villa November 8-11, 2012.
One of the two Shakespearean plays that every single Villa and
Prep student studies during their years in high school. A great
opportunity for students to get up close and personal with “The
Bard”. A unique learning experience for our students.
Children of Eden, a winter family musical by Stephen
Schwartz, will be presented at Prep January 24-27, 2013.
Schwartz also wrote the music for Godspell, Wicked, Pocahontas,
Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Prince of Egypt. A truly beautiful
show that will quickly become one of everyone’s favorites.
Audiences go crazy for this show. This will be a special event, and
auditions will be open to all Villa and Prep students and family
members.
Our Town, a winter play by Thornton Wilder, will be presented
at Villa March 14-17, 2013.
One of the most famous American plays ever written and
winner of the Pulitzer Prize, this American classic is “beautiful
and remarkable...one of the sagest, warmest and most deeply
human scripts to come out of the theatre...a spiritual experience.”
Everyone has heard of it. This is your chance to see it!
In the Heights, a spring musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda, will
be presented at Prep May 9-12, 2013.
This show was nominated for 13 Tony awards and was the winner of
four including Best Musical of the Year in 2008. After Les Mis and
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, where does one go? When you’ve
climbed a mountain, there’s only two ways to go - down, and across
to another mountain! This unusual pick for our spring show will
challenge and stretch our young performers out of their comfort
zones and will be one of the most energetic, jump-out-of-yourseats-with-applause shows we’ve ever done.
The VMA Show Choir participated in a regional choir
competition with Music in the Parks on May 26, 2012. The
Show Choir performed “Blue Skies”, featuring four soloists,
Maggie Hoag, Katherine Cooney, Drevell Showers, and
Antonia Flamini, in an improvisation scat sing break, and
“Over the Rainbow,” featuring Ellise Chase on the solo.
The choir earned an Excellent Rating in the adjudication
process, with scores that rivaled other choirs in larger
divisions. The Show Choir also came home with the First
Place trophy for their own division. To top it off, Ellise Chase
earned the Outstanding Vocalist medal for being the top
soloist at the competition. To celebrate, the choir spent the
remainder of the day at Cedar Point, which is nearby the
Music Festival location.

Each class has a theme and organizes everything
around that particular theme. This includes
choreographing their dance/cheerleading routines,
making giant murals and putting together matching
costumes.
The day started with students sitting in their
respective corners in the gym, below their wall murals
clapping and chanting their class names with much
enthusiasm. Dances and cheers were performed and

Mary’s Day
T h e women o f villa
– a Beautiful VMA Tradition
V
illa May Queens can be traced back all the way to 1935, making the May Crowning
a treasured tradition for VMA students. This year’s May Crowning took place on
May 30 in the auditorium.
Throughout the years, VMA has honored Mary in recognizing students who exemplify
her spirit of courage, inspiration, service and dedication to the development of their
unique gifts.
Family and friends, faculty and administration joined together in celebrating the
achievements of VMA students. They also joined together with Mary, who walked
new paths with grace and determination, bringing life to the world, and recognized the
students who do the same.
When the senior class selects their May queen, her escort and the court and escorts,
they do so on the individual character and moral integrity of their classmates and their
commitment to the faith community of Villa.
This year’s most cherished honor was bestowed on Rosa Fatica, who was May Queen.
She wore a white gown with a white floral headpiece and carried a bouquet of matching
flowers. Her court attendants were Erin Estes, Elizabeth Nawrocki and Kim Maasz.
They also wore white gowns with vibrant floral headpieces and matching bouquets.
Their escorts–Cameron Kobielski, Drevell Showers, Will Stevens and Benny Mitchell
were–dressed in formal attire with matching boutonnieres.
All members of the senior class are eligible to be selected. A first ballot by the senior
class narrows the list. Faculty and seniors ballot again. The May Queen and court are
the four highest votes.
Prior to the ceremony, the main hallway was dark. Villa students lined the corridor with
candles. Students were then dismissed and walked through the lit tunnel of students
with their own candles prior to entering the auditorium.
The entire student body gathered in the auditorium. After various hymns were sung,
Fatica placed the wreath on our Heavenly Queen. Senior Ellise Chase, accompanied by
Mr. Andrew Alesso, sang “Ave Maria.”
Queen Rosa Fatica crowns Mary.
Afterwards, the students went to homeroom
for refreshments and to receive their Mary’s Day
letters. Letter writing begins in the month of May.
A mailbox was placed outside of the campus
ministry office, and students were able to drop off
their letters. Students wrote to friends and people
who have made a difference in their lives. Every
student receives a letter.
Mary’s Day is a long-time tradition at VMA that
students look forward to.

Class of 2012 Become Alumnae at
Baccalaureate
The Class of 2012 eagerly walked into Blessed Sacrament Church with sheer anticipation
of becoming an alumna at Baccalaureate on May 29.
Family and friends packed the church to show their support for the seniors. The
celebratory Mass is a chance for the seniors, their families and the faculty and
administration of Villa Maria Academy to come together for one last time before saying
goodbye at graduation. It gave students a chance to share their faith with friends and
family and remember the wonderful times the Class of 2012 shared together. The Mass
was concelebrated by Fr. Nicholas Rouch’79 (CP) and President Fr. Scott Jabo.
VMA’s Baccalaureate is very special to the class because it’s not a ceremony where students
just go through the motions. What stands out more than anything else at Baccalaureate is
the pinning tradition. Each senior is pinned by an alumna of the school. The fifty-seven
graduating students were welcomed as alumna that evening.

Outreach Day – A School Day Spent Serving Others
The Villa Victors took to the streets of Erie on April 18 to learn
something that can’t be taught from a book—serving others.
Over 300 Villa Maria Academy students along with faculty
and staff members participated in the annual Community
Outreach Day.
Faculty and staff members were assigned groups of students.
As a group, they decided what they wanted to do to help make
a difference in the community.
Over 30 groups met at various locations throughout Erie and spent
the day helping out. Activities ranged from helping out the elderly,
assisting children and outdoor cleanup.
Most groups worked together from 9 a.m. until noon, then took a
lunch break and later returned to finish up the projects they were
working on. It was a great opportunity for students to become
more familiar with faculty and staff members who they normally do
not come in contact with, all this while serving others.
The Villa community was proud to be able to provide their time and
energy to serve others via numerous service projects benefiting the
Erie area.

VMA Attends National Association of Student Councils Conference
T
his summer Jennie Fustine ’13 and Madison Canter ’13 had the
opportunity to attend the National Association of Student Councils
Conference in Oklahoma City with Mrs. Aniko Walker. While there, they
attended useful workshops and listened to profound speakers. As part of
the Pennsylvania delegation, they were able to interact and share ideas
with students from all over the United States. It was an enjoyable weekend
full of energy for the students. They learned a lot from their newfound
friends and are excited to apply these ideas to the Villa Student Council
this school year. Aside from attending the workshops, the girls also got to
sightsee around Oklahoma City and get a taste of Western life.
It was incredible experience for both girls. Fustine said, “It was a great
opportunity to talk to and make connections with student council
members around the nation. Maddie and I were eager to share our ideas
and learn new ideas from other passionate student council members. It is
safe to say that we will take this experience with us as we continue to lead
the school in our own Student Council.”

VMA Spirit Store Renovated
This year when you pop into the VMA Spirit Store, you may notice that it looks significantly different.
Our maintenance department worked hard this summer to improve the look of the store.
The newly installed slatted walls and extra racks will allow more space for merchandise this year.
The entire store was painted and is now carpeted. Please stop in and see us!
Hello Fr. Jabo!
VMA is an excellent school for girls in our
community! It upholds its faith, family,
excellence and traditions!
Our daughter, Kelly McCall, graduated on Thursday night. She was our
second daughter to graduate from VMA. The faculty and staff of VMA saw
a shy student walk into the school four years ago. However, with their help
and support they assisted us allowing Kelly to be all that she can be! She
has performed comedic acts on stage in front of the entire school, along with
Sports Day cheerleading, softball, and being an active member of Lake Erie
Pride (a leader during her senior year). Kelly even excelled in her academics
during her years at VMA and was awarded an annual $18,000 scholarship
to Mercyhurst University!
Thank you to the faculty, staff and administration for allowing Kelly to
be who she is! Hopefully, she will be a famous comedian some day, and
everyone can say I knew her when! In the meantime, she plans on working
in the criminal justice field, following her father’s footsteps.
We will be able to celebrate another graduation tradition in two years
when our daughter Erin graduates from VMA. Their big sister, Stephanie
Libra, graduated from Villa in 2003. She is currently working through the
Achievement Center and began a master’s program at Gannon. So proud of
my VMA girls!
Could you please forward this to the VMA faculty, staff, and administration?
Thank you! Have a great summer!
