Bridget Juister, L.A.c., B Holistic
Cancer changes everything, but change
is not always a bad thing. Bridget Juister
of B Holistic explores how like the New
Year, cancer can offer an opportunity to
begin again. She’ll explain how acupuncture,
meditation, and feng shui can be used to
emerge fearlessly and thoughtfully through
one of the most difficult times in your life.
See page 5
Michael Williams, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist
Last autumn, we gathered together and looked back so you could “pay forward”
and share the lessons you have learned that have helped you meet the challenges
you have encountered along the road with cancer. The other half of that effort
now is to look forward and decide what you want to do in the coming year that
will help you simply enjoy or feel pleased and accomplished about despite the
challenges that life with cancer might bring. So with the approach of spring,
please gather in another Wellness House open format discussion to pay forward
your ideas about plans or goals, you aim to accomplish in 2016, regardless of
where you are or will be on your path with cancer. See page 6

The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also called
Tapping, is a simple, yet powerful tool for relieving
mental, emotional and physical discomfort or pain.
Based on the principles of both ancient acupressure
and modern psychology, we tap on specific energy
meridians while focusing on the negative thoughts
or emotions, or on the physical sensations. The EFT
practice calms the nervous system, restoring the
balance of energy in the body and rewiring the brain
to respond in healthy ways.

Book Club: A Life of Being, Having
and Doing Enough by Wayne Muller
Tuesdays, February 2 - March 22, 2 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Registration Required
Val Piazza LCPC
Nationally renowned author, therapist, and minister, Wayne
Muller, offers healing for the perpetually stressed in A Life
of Being, Having, and Doing Enough. Learning compassion
and mercy for ourselves and recognizing what is most
profoundly true about who we are and what we need, leads to self-acceptance, so
that whatever we choose to do, in this moment, is wholly enough.
Muller mixes the writings of great spiritual and political leaders with inspirational
anecdotes from his own life, inviting us to derive more satisfaction from less and pull
gratitude out of the ashes of grief. The answer to what he describes as “authentic
happiness” lies not in seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty. In reality, he
writes, the glass is always half full and half empty. The world is neither broken nor
whole, but eternally engaged in rhythms between joy and sorrow.
With Muller’s guidance, and through our discussions, we may find ourselves on one
of the most courageous and spiritual pilgrimages of our lives.

All of us are reliant upon the sun for energy, the earth for nourishment
and food, water for drinking, and trees for fresh air. Often times we go
about our busy lives preoccupied with many factors, cancer and noncancer related, and it is easy to take the water, air and plants around us
for granted. The practice of mindfulness takes us out of the autopilot
mode, allows us to pause, experience the present moment and give
gratitude for all the elements of the natural world that support our daily
lives. As winter turns to spring, please join us for this unique opportunity
to practice outdoor mindfulness on a brisk evening in late March.
The hope is that this outdoor mindfulness experience will awaken you
to have more frequent “mindful moments” throughout all of your days.

The need for support and information
doesn’t stop when treatment ends.
Being a cancer survivor can add
stress in your life. Common concerns
include being fearful about a recurrence, worrying about finances and
keeping affordable health insurance,
questioning faith or other beliefs,
worrying about fertility, relationship,
finding and keeping employment,
rejoining back into your “old” life.
You may prefer to deal with stressors
on your own, but many survivors
find that it’s helpful to talk with other
survivors about concerns and get
emotional support from those who
understand.

When you or your loved one develops cancer,
you may find yourself clinging to your faith
for hope or questioning your faith altogether.
The focus of this monthly group is to create an
environment in which people feel free to discuss
the challenges and joys found in the spiritual
side of the cancer journey. People who are newly
diagnosed (within 5 years) are encouraged to
attend. Whether or not you attend a church,
synagogue, mosque or temple, or you draw
spiritual understanding from nature, philosophy,
or the arts, everyone holds certain beliefs and
values about what makes life meaningful.
Wellness House does not affiliate with any one
religious group; therefore, people of all faith
backgrounds are encouraged to participate in
this support group.

Treatment is over and everyone around you
believes you should be “back to normal” but
inside you know your life has changed in
profound ways. Both educational and experiential,
this 5-week program is designed for cancer
survivors who have completed treatment.
Each 90-minute session will focus on a variety
of topics including exercise, nutrition and stress
management, in addition to group discussion
related to emotional and physical changes
post-treatment, social support and coping
techniques. Participants will also have the
opportunity to explore community resources
and create a Survivorship Action Plan.
Attendance at each session is beneficial but
not required.
