Donna Foster Donna Foster has been a member since August 2003. She spends her time at GATC doing Pilates, cardio, and lifting weights. Donna lives in Castle Pines and works with her husband David, also a Greenwood member, as a Regional Sales manager for English Bay Batter (cookie dough sales). English Bay provides cookie dough for Royal Crest Dairy, Shamrock Foods etc. Donna has a daughter, Mallory who is a senior at the University of Arizona. Donna has been exercising regularly for 11 years. She began doing Pilates to rehab her knee and found Pilates more beneficial than “traditional” Physical Therapy. For Donna, Pilates “works quickly and builds lasting strength. You can do this work out until you are 90 years old! It’s fun and the challenges keep on coming.” In her spare time, Donna enjoys all sporting events: football and basketball are her favorite. She and her husband hold season tickets to the Bronco games. Donna has been a regular in the GATC Pilates studio for many years now. She chooses the Greenwood studio because of the instructors’ level of expertise, the classes offered (at all times of the day) and the variety and expansive pieces of Pilates equipment. Donna appreciates how much the Greenwood instructors re-invest in their continuing education. A sample week of working out with Donna: Monday: Pilates mat class and cardio on the elliptical for 30 minutes Tuesday: Pilates reformer class and 30 minutes cardio on the elliptical Wednesday: Pilates mat class and weight lifting with Brandon Thursday: Tower class with Mary, followed by cardio Friday: Reformer class with Sara and a chair class with Stephanie Saturday: A tower class with Ann and cardio Sunday is her day of rest. Donna takes from four different Pilates instructors and says she gains a different experience from each: “Stephanie will blast your abs, Mary is the queen of props and takes the pain from my body, Sara is the fitness queen, making Pilates a more aerobic workout, and Ann has a wealth of knowledge and brings attention to details that you would never think about on your own.” Donna has chosen Greenwood as her club because “the staff is extremely professional. Greenwood is clean and offers the most up to date equipment and programs in the marketplace while doing it in a friendly atmosphere”. 3 P-Note CHOICES AND SACRIFICES... One evening during dinner with friends we started a conversation about the sacrifices and choices we make in our lives. Some of my friends are single, some married, some are stay at home mothers and some are working mothers. Regardless of marital or work status, we all still have to make choices and sacrifices for the things we want in life. During these challenging economic times it seems like we are having to make even more choices and more sacrifices and truly look at what we can cut from our lives, how we can be more productive with our time and how we can make a dollar stretch to something more without giving up the things in life that we really enjoy. In talking with numerous members at the club over the past few months, we seem to be embarking on the same conversation, “our family is streamlining, we are pulling back on some of the extras, and my husband/wife is looking for new employment”. Realizing that we are in an economic crunch, it is the mandate of Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club to assist you in relieving the stress and negative energy from your life and provide you with the best exercise experience possible. I read an article recently which stated that one-third of Americans say the economy is affecting their health and has changed the way they take care of themselves. Of the people surveyed, 55 percent report taking better care of their health by exercising, eating healthier or getting regular check-ups and screenings. The survey underscores that people already make the link between health and economic well-being, with most agreeing that healthy behaviors, such as exercise and eating right, can lead to a better and more prosperous life. Ninety-three percent say such behaviors would help them enjoy life more and improve their energy, while 91 percent say these behaviors would help them live longer, and 85 percent say healthy living would help them take better care of their families. In addition, nearly two-thirds of the people surveyed say exercise and healthy eating would help them save money in the long run. Survey conducted by CIGNA We are your partners in health! You have made the commitment and investment in your health by becoming a member of Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club and you have my guarantee that we will fulfill our end of the relationship by continuing to provide you with premiere health and fitness facilities, exceptional programs and services, and professional staff who focus on members first. I look forward to seeing you in the club in 2009! NUTRITION RESOLUTION SOLUTIONS and veggies are naturally low in calories. By member Angela B. Moore, M.S.,R.D.,LD/N, CLT Try these tips for adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet: • Toss chopped or shredded zucchini or summer squash to marinara and pasta for a fiber boost. • Stir veggies in your omelet or scrambled eggs, or make a quiche with asparagus, spinach and mushrooms. • Start your meals with a salad or vegetable soup. • Choose appetizers like low-fat spinach dip or hummus with carrots and celery. Stock up on "munchable"veggies for snacks. • Pep up your pizza with veggies and extra sauce. • Add salsa to baked potatoes, rice, chicken, sandwiches, eggs and tacos. Salsa, made mostly of tomatoes, is high in lycopene. • Top chicken, turkey or fish with sun dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers. • Add chopped spinach or carrots and onion to meat loafs or burgers. • Slip veggies into all your casserole dishes even if it doesn't call for them. • Add shredded carrots or zucchini to tuna and chicken salad. If making diet resolutions is part of your approach to the New Year, why not focus on healthy eating habits this time, rather than losing weight on some “fad diet”. One way to improve your health and start the New Year off on the right foot, is to try eating a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables. In fact, did you know that only about 25% of Americans consume the minimum of five servings of fruits and/or vegetables each day? The potential benefits associated with eating more fruits and vegetables add up quickly. Fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, anti-oxidants and phytochemicals. Research has found that eating plenty of fruits and veggies may help reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers. The most important thing about fruits and veggies is that they taste great…. They are extremely versatile because they are good both raw and cooked, and add color and texture to your plate. Fruits and vegetables are nutritious in any form-fresh, frozen, canned, dried and 100% juice. Fruits and veggies provide fiber that helps fill you up and keeps your digestive system regular and happy! Also, fruits 4 In a nutshell, when you are considering the choices and sacrifices you need to make, your health and the health and well-being of your family is not an option! There are so many studies that have been conducted about the benefits of exercise. As members of Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club, you are all well aware of those benefits and understand how exercise can positively impact your life. Greenwood is, has and always will be the premiere athletic and tennis club in the Denver metropolitan area. Given that, we strive each and every day to fulfill our vision and insure that GATC is “The Best Part of Your Day®”! Back in November there was an article published in the Denver Post discussing health clubs in the area and how many of them were discounting, packaging annual fees and offering two-for-ones to entice people to join their club. As a rule of thumb and as our commitment to you as loyal and long-term members of GATC, we have not and will never discount memberships to gain more members. We take pride in the fact that every member of our club has paid the same fees to join Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club and as our mission states “we offer fair and consistent business practices” across our entire membership. We realize this business practice may offer an edge to our competition, but at the same time, we believe that we owe it to you, our long-term members, to stay true to who we are and what we offer. • Pile avacado, tomato and onion on burritos and tacos. Downhill skiing and snowboarding require specific preparations and conditioning routines to ensure safe winter fun. Strength, flexibility, endurance and skill exercises for skiers and boarders are essential for both recreational and expert skiers. Some skiers participate in other sports during the off season to stay in shape, but many are weekend warriors. No matter where you fit, you could wind up with minor aches, pains or a serious injury if you don't spend a little time preparing. You would never run a marathon without proper training and preparation; yet people are often willing to spend up to six hours a day on skis or boards after taking months off. Get in snowshape before you go...arrive with the muscles all firing and ready to progress rather then spending your first week or ten days on the slopes getting back into snow-shape. Pilates can help you prepare. Pilates exercises focus on core strength, balance and co-ordination, along with snow-sport specific muscle strength and flexibility. With all this, comes greater body awareness, which is the real key to performance in a high skill sport such as skiing or boarding. Take a private lesson or any mat or equipment based class at Greenwood to see how Pilates will help strengthen your core for a pain-free, injury-free winter sport season. AT GREENWOOD ATHLETIC AND TENNIS CLUB Invite your friend to purchase an intro pack and receive your next private lesson at 20% off *Expires March 31, 2009. Good for first time clients and private session only. A few Pilates exercises for you to try: Star: Start on hands and knees with hands directly under shoulders and knees directly under hips (keep knees hip-width apart). Lift the right leg behind you and then when you feel balanced, lift the right arm towards the ceiling as you open up in the hips so that both shoulders and both hips are facing the front of the room. Slowly lower the arm and leg so that they touch at the same time. Repeat on the other side. Complete five repetitions on each side, hold each repetition for several seconds. Leg Pull (Plank): Start on hands and knees and walk feet out until the body is in a full press up position. Maintain this position by drawing the navel in and up towards the spine and the shoulder blades down the back. While holding this position, lift the right leg slightly off the ground reaching it long as opposed to up. Exhale as you lift the leg and inhale as you lower it. Repeat with the other leg. 5-10 repetitions on each side. Spine Twist: Start seated with legs apart in a V-shape. Sit as tall as you can, keeping the pelvis at neutral (if you cannot sit without slouching, try bending the knees or sitting on a cushion). With the arms reaching out to the sides of the room and shoulders pulled away from the ears, inhale to prepare. As you exhale, turn the chest to the right as far as you can go. Inhale as you return to the center and exhale as you turn to the left. Repeat 4-5 times on both sides. 6 • Minor Illness and Injury Care • Labs • EKG • Workers’ Compensation • IV Hydration and Medication • Respiratory Care with Nebulization Treatments • Sports Physicals • Flu Shots • X-Ray Shorter wait time and lower costs compared to the ER! 3601 S. In a world full of choices, a list of endless options can be paralyzing. In the world of health and wellness, sorting through the mounds of theories and different approaches to getting and staying fit can be exhausting. Even here, within the walls of our very own Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club, we have a myriad of fitness options to help you reach your goals. It is very common for people to gravitate towards one modality of fitness and stay there. When we keep doing the same form of exercise without introducing the body to different types of challenges, we can often experience a “plateau,” where the body adapts to the current form of exercise, and results become more difficult to achieve. The trick is to consistently shock the body, and GATC offers plenty of programming to help you do just that. Pilates instructor, Ann Daxberger is a perfect example of someone who utilized the resources available to her, tried something new, and reaped the benefits of cross-training. Ann added BodyPump®, a 55 minute weight training to music class, to her workout regime in January of 2008. She committed to the class three times per week in addition to her existing program of regular Pilates, yoga and cardio training on the Gauntlet. She lost 10 pounds in less than eight weeks and immediately saw more definition in her arms and backside. Ann’s workouts are now more well-rounded and she credits the addition of BodyPump® as a major contributor to her current fitness level. “I really don't like to lift weights,” Ann says. “After one set of 15 I don't feel like doing any more, so BodyPump® works perfectly for me.” Ann’s advice to new members or those who would like to see greater results? “Try new things so that your body isn't just doing the same thing all the time. Switch things up so your body sees changes. It is also good mentally. I think we just do what feels familiar. If you just add one new thing that is totally different, you may be surprised how much you like it.” GATC offers more than 115 complimentary group exercise classes per week. We have two beautiful 25-meter pools, a cutting edge Pilates studio, the most qualified and diverse personal trainers in the business, a vibration plate, a basketball court, year-round Boot Camps, and some of the most popular yoga instructors in the Denver Metropolitan area. Try something new, you and your body just might like it. You may also download a copy of our team handbook. Below is a letter received by our General Manager from a GTS parent… Paula, Our family have been members of GAC since 2002 and have always had a positive experience with the club. However I do believe an exceptional transition has been made in the last three years in the GTS swim program. Our daughter Katie has been swimming with GTS for the past six years and we have experienced firsthand the transformation of the program when Scott and Evan arrived. The attention, the team building, the care for the swimmers, and the exceptional coaching has transformed our daughter from a half-hearted swimmer to a state level competitor. I know your management team took some bold and controversial moves when the coaching staff turnover occurred, and the team had to be rebuilt. But those bold moves have paid off and GTS is on its way to becoming a formidable swim team in the state and is being led by a world class coach in Scott Cummins. Katie had one of her best moments, when as a freshman she qualified for the Varsity Swim Team at Cherry Creek High School, I don’t believe that would have been possible without the GTS Swim experience and in particular the coaching of Scott and Evan. Thank you from both Cynthia and I as well as Katie. Have you ever watched a sporting event and wondered how those athletes perform so well? Although most athletes are inherently talented and physically gifted, there is usually a team of experts helping that individual perform at peak levels. Take for example an NFL quarterback. Not only does he have a head coach to direct and coordinate his movements, he has a coach that reviews his throwing, a strength and conditioning coach and a nutritionist. These athletes have trained at a high level for years and know what they should do, yet still have individuals to help them be their best. The simple fact is, everyone needs help with certain things. Someone who wants to get better at golf or tennis would get lessons from a pro. A person who wants to learn to sky dive or scuba dive takes lessons, yet when it comes to exercise, many people believe they don’t need help. They think they can do everything on their own. Even though people are disciplined enough to continuously exercise, they may not have the knowledge to make the most of their efforts. There are experts in every area of fitness who have insights and knowledge that you can benefit from. Besides motivation, adherence and encouragement, instructors give direction. They are able to take you from your starting point to your goal by using gradual progression. If progression is the key to attaining your goals, trainers are the key holders. Developing a plan can be as easy as meeting once a month or every other month, so long as you are adhering to the plan. FITNESS CHALLENGE ‘ 09 HAVE YOU REACHED YOUR POTENTIAL? By Theo Teryazos When looking at the records of American players this year, most notably in the Slams, the results have been poor at best. Besides this recent Open, Roddick has failed to make it past the third round of a Grand Slam this year. Blake’s Grand Slam record has been only slightly better, making it to the quarters of the Australian Open (where he lost in straights to a half-speed Federe.) Since that loss, he has failed to make it past the third round at the French, Wimbledon or the US Open. The top five men in the world at the moment (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Ferrrer and Daveydenko) all grew up learning to play on clay. Thus, as the game continues to move toward faster, more agile players, the Americans are being left further and further behind. Every member at Greenwood has an enormous advantage over most players in Colorado and for that matter, the rest of the US., since our members (especially the juniors) are learning to play on clay, they develop a more wellrounded and thoughtful game. The reasoning behind this is quite simple. Clay forces you to learn tennis the hard way by not offering up many free points. Clay court players develop strategic thinking and patience that can be devoid in players who only play on hard courts. Because you can’t hit winners as quickly or as easily, it forces players to construct points by learning how to open up opponents with a wider array of shots before finding that finishing ball. Clay also increases a player’s physical fitness and ability to move. As the results in the professional ranks illustrate, it is far easier for clay courters to adapt to hard courts or even grass than the other way around. Clay is also much easier on the joints, keeping our members not only physically stronger, but less apt to injure themselves. With all these advantages, it’s no wonder Greenwood consistently fields such strong USTA and Junior tennis teams. Greenwood is ahead of the curve in developing all-around players who are more adept at competing on all surfaces. Hopefully, the USTA will build more clay courts in the States to give American juniors a fighting chance in this ever-evolving sport. In the meantime, we here at Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club can enjoy all the advantages that clay has to offer. THEO’S TENNIS TIP Want a better volley? Concentrate on the ready position. Too often, I see people waiting for the ball, up at the net with straight legs and the racquet down by their side. The proper position should find the volleyer with knees bent, weight slightly forward and the racquet out in front. This will establish the solid foundation and good balance required for a volley. Remember, you have exactly half the amount of time to react to the ball at the net than you do at the baseline, so it pays to be prepared. 14 THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD TECHNIQUE By Ryan Haith Ever wonder why you’re wearing an elbow brace or rushing for a bag of ice after a good hitting session? I could summarize that answer best by stressing the importance of having good technique. Some may argue that the game has fewer injuries today than ever due to conditioning and strength programs. I would contend that although having a strong core helps, proper technique is the key to keeping club players enjoying tennis day in and day out without pain. Roger Federer excels because of the amazing balance and timing that is based on a foundation of perfect technique. You rarely hear of Federer pulling out of events due to injury, whereas Andy Roddick is falling off the map due to injury. Think back to the last time that you saw Roddick vs. Federer and ask yourself who looked like they were working harder on the court. Roddick, from the serve to his unreliable backhand, is putting in much more energy than the seemingly effortless Roger Federer. From footwork to racquet preparation, Roger Federer is hands down the smoothest tennis player to ever play the game. I didn’t say he was the best, but the smoothest, and it stems from good technique. Next time you watch tennis, close your eyes and think of Jimmy Connors or John McEnroe and the way they took the racquet straight back and low, versus Federer and Nadal who take the racquet back more upright. This is allowing players to hit the ball harder, with more spin and take more stress off your shoulder, elbow, and wrist. If it has been a while since you have taken a tennis lesson and you are looking for ways to increase performance or decrease pain in your body, talk to one of your Greenwood Tennis Pros and let them help you enjoy the benefits of good technique. Ask the Expert Christy Leimkuehler Member Coach and Personal Trainer Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club 303-770-2582 x320 As members of Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club, we are fortunate to belong to one of the leading health clubs in the nation. With state of the art facilities and equipment, we are armed with everything we need to be healthiest versions of ourselves. For a novice exerciser, however, all the options can become overwhelming and may make it tough to get started. You may end up more confused than encouraged. You have access to everything you need, it’s just a matter of where to begin. What types of exercise should I be doing? Find something you enjoy doing. Whether it is boxing, pilates, yoga, cycling, step, swimming, using a cardio machine, lifting weights, etc. Find something that motivates and interests you, then set a schedule for yourself. For example, if you find that you enjoy Spinning classes, you might decide to Spin on Mondays and Fridays. Look at the group exercise schedule to see our list of classes. With 117 offered each week, something will fit! How many days a week should I work out? For a beginning exerciser, two-three days a week is a good start. Once you establish the habit of coming to the club, try to add another day so that your workout is a combination of cardiovascular exercise (training that puts stress on the cardio respiratory system) two days a week and weight training, one to two days a week. How long should I spend doing cardio and weight training? Start with 20-30 minutes. As you feel more comfortable, move to 30-60 minutes. Group exercise classes make exercising a lot easier because each class is anywhere from 45-60 minutes and you have an instructor telling you what to do! How do I know if I am working hard enough? When you exercise, your goal should be to get your body to a place where you have to open your mouth to breathe and can speak but should not be able to carry on a conversation. This is the only way your body will begin to make significant changes. It is not easy, so finding a workout buddy, taking a group exercise class or working with a personal trainer will help push you to that level. Your body can do it, it’s your mind that is stopping you. Once you push through that wall, you can do anything! 17 Club Directory & Hours HOURS OF OPERATION Athletic Club 303-770-2582 HOURS OF OPERATION ink!
