INDIANA SOUTH WESLEYAN October 2005 Looking Ahead would like to challenge every pastor and church in our district to cast a vision where you worship. Where should your local church be in five years if the Lord tarries His coming? How many new people will you try to reach – with the gospel and then disciple them? Will there be any improvements or additions to your building? These type questions need to be ask as you work on your Five-Year Plan. During our last D.B.A. meeting the progress listed below was adapted for our district. I prayed and fasted asking God to give me direction as to what should be accomplished in our district within the next 60 months. Find below the “Five in Five” program. A big part of leadership is casting vision. The Lord told the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk concerning his vision to, “write the vision and make it plain on tablets …” (Hab. 2:2) If we are not careful we get so busy just living from day to day and week to week that we lose sight of the big picture. In other words, vision casting is excluded at the expense of daily existence. As churches and leaders we cannot allow this to happen. With the Lord’s help I want to see the following five things accomplished within five years in this great district. I Dr. Mark S. F. Eckart DIST. To continue to promote and encourage the practice of spiritual disciplines. *I want to challenge all Wesleyans in the district to read God’s word, pray, fast, and be faithful in church attendance. This brings renewal, revivals, and a spirit of expectancy among our pastors and lay people that God will speak to us! 2. To work hard to see the G.L.A.D. program brought to completion. *I believe by God’s help January of 2009 the district will be debt free and the newly acquired acreage will be paid in full. 3. To start at least three new churches. 4. To revitalize and energize the churches in our district that are struggling to grow. *I plan to trouble shoot, give direction, hope, and encouragement to these pastors and churches. 5. To strive to see all of our churches pay 100% U.S.F. Mooresville Dedication of “Linville Hall” Pictured left is the Rev. While in Czech he taught English as a second language, led worship and small groups, and did friendship evangelism. In May 2004 he was appointed as a career missionary to the Czech Republic. Phil accepted Jesus as his personal Savior when he was nine years old. As he has grown in his relationship P with Christ, he has committed himself to following the Lord wherever He leads. His call to missions has been gradual, but very clear. With each mission trip he felt a stronger and stronger call to return for longer periods of service. Phil earned a B.S. degree in elementary education with a minor in music from Indiana Wesleyan University. He hopes to teach English when he returns to the Czech Republic. It is his desire to be a strong, consistent witness for Christ and a Christian friend who through God’s guidance and leadership can help lead people to Christ. Please contact Phil at (513) 907-1223 or e-mail: [email protected]. Dr. Henry L. Smith Named President of IWU r. Henry L. Smith has been chosen as the President of Indiana Wesleyan University. He will become the 11th president of the 85 year-old University on July 1, 2006—a day after he completes his 19th year as University president. As President-elect, Smith will work closely with Barnes during the coming year. Dr. Smith has served as Executive Vice-President of IWU since 2004. Before coming to IWU he served in Nazarene higher education for 25 years. Dr. Smith has a D bachelor’s degree in Christian Education from God’s Bible School and a second baccalaureate degree in Education and a Master of Arts degree in Communication at the University of Cincinnati. He earned his Ph. D. in Communication in 1987 from the Ohio State University. Smith’s heritage as a Wesleyan, coupled with 26 years of proven leadership in Christian higher education, made him an ideal choice for the IWU presidency. He and his wife, Teresa, have three adult children. When Smith joined IWU on July 1, 2004, he returned to his religious and geographic roots. He was born in Frankfort, IN, where his father served for more than 50 years as founding pastor of the Victory Chapel Wesleyan Church. G.L.A.D. UPDATE want to first of all say “thanks” to many of you who have already joined the G.L.A.D. program. About a year and a half ago I felt the Lord definitely led me (with the help of a lot of other people) to start this campaign to see our district get out of debt and the 118 acres we purchased in 2003 be paid in full by January of 2009. I have some good news! The Lord is helping us and we are making some great progress. The G.L.A.D. team has paid $130,349.06 into the program and $259,200 has been pledged. Hallelujah! I would like to ask you to pray about something though. All we need is 84 more leaders and this effort will be finished. If you haven’t joined, would you consider doing so? Or if you are already a member maybe I INDIANA SOUTH WESLEYAN you would take another unit or two to help us finish on time. Many of our churches have taken units. If your church has not joined, why not consider doing so? Your investment goes for a great cause that will outlast us all. Maybe God has blessed you financially and you could take a unit or two to help with the cause. If you have already signed up consider taking another unit. Why don’t you join Deb and me as we have taken five units in this campaign? When we get phase one completed (the loan paid off) we will then do research to see what would be best to build first. Maybe a multi-purpose building, residence for retired pastors, or other ideas have been discussed as well. $360,000 342,000 324,000 306,000 288,000 270,000 252,000 259,200.00 pledged 234,000 216,000 198,000 180,000 162,000 144,000 126,000 130,349.06 paid 108,000 90,000 72,000 54,000 36,000 18,000 OCTOBER 2005 / Page 3 CHURCH GROWTH REPORT Church Pastor Aug.
