We started off on a nice day with two buses and headed to Cleveland to take in our inaugural contest against the Lake Erie Monsters. Cleveland is always a fun-filled destination with lots of stuff to do, so we headed out on Thursday to give us all day Friday to explore. We got to Cleveland in time to do dinner and take in some of the night life. Many of us enjoyed the offerings of the Great Lakes Brewing Company, while others headed to Iron Chef Michael Symon’s Lola restaurant. Though it was cold walking, several of us headed to a grill/bar/bowling alley, The 3 Corner Alley, which is by far the ultimate bowling experience. Featuring low couches, sleek décor, 12 large screen TVs over the 16 lanes and lane-side drink and food service, the place was hopping on a Thursday night. We actually got to bowl mostly for free, because it turned out to be ladies night. Because it was so busy, the shoes that were several sizes too large were a built-in excuse for getting beaten by my nephew, Dylan. The next day most everyone headed down to the waterfront to visit either the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame or the Great Lakes Science Center. I’d highly recommend either one. The area outside the Hall of Fame was icy with tiny paths carved to the doors, and we enjoyed watching some youngsters slip and slide their way in. (Continued on page 4) (Trip continued from page 3) From the Science Center’s large expanse of glass windows that overlook Lake Erie, we tracked the weather as it rolled in, and as the day wore on, the world outside became windier and whiter. Before game time, it was so miserable walking around that the bus delivered most everyone to the arena, despite the hotel being within a block and a half. Cleveland’s Booster Club hosted us before the game at the Quaker Steak and Lube. Thanks so much! We had a great time chatting with everyone. We wish we were able to get out to Ohio more often. The Monsters and Cavaliers organizations, who share the arena and ownership, even donated some prizes to test our Lake Erie and Cavs knowledge. 10% off food order for booster club members showing their valid membership card. Mundy Street, at the Mall, Wilkes-Barre In all the times that we’ve traveled to Ohio, this marked our first win, so I guess it’s not surprising that by the next day when we needed to travel, we had a blizzard bearing down on us. Just getting to the bus was an adventure, because you could barely see the person walking in front of you when taking the suitcases out (the Grand Rapids Griffin bus took the only other spot in front of the hotel, so our bus was at the corner). We enjoyed watching all the cars getting stuck in the road in front of our hotel where there was already about 7 inches. Our worst moment came trying to get up the unplowed onramp to start our journey. I didn’t think we were going to make it, as we slowed to a crawl as we came to the top. By the time we hit our first rest area, we had escaped the worst of the weather. It’s the first time I’ve ever been in a rest area where the ramp was plowed, but nothing else. After we trudged in laughing and snowcovered, Alex implored a worker to snowplow a path for us back to the bus. They were closing within the hour, because almost no workers made it there. It turns out that we got 4 out of Ohio and Cleveland before the worst of the storm dumped over 20 inches on the city, causing them to declare a state of emergency later in the day, and close. A dozen city buses needed to be abandoned on unplowed streets when they got stuck on some of the main thoroughfares. Almost unbelievably, given the state of emergency, the Lake Erie game against the Griffins that night was played. For everyone watching the storm’s progress on The Weather Channel, Mike Bettis and his crew stayed at our hotel. They were broadcasting a couple hundred feet from the door. Maybe you even caught sight of our Tiger Tours buses there. As the weather worsened, he moved the broadcasts closer and closer to the door. We left a few hours before his famous frozen eyebrows report, which looked like it was done less than 50 feet from the lobby. We had waited until the last moment before deciding to take the southern route via I-80 home, rather than trying for Syracuse via the (Trip Report continued on page 8) assessed to any player who is assessed a fighting major after the original altercation. The meeting will start at 6:30, everyone is welcome. Lottery By Ed Drozdowski I would like to thank everyone who sold or bought lottery tickets for the month of March. GO PENS! 2008 BC Convention Meeting Committee Report By Ed Drozdowski Plans for the 2008 booster club convention are moving along. The listing of the side trips should be ready in early April. A contest between the booster clubs for Thursday night is being worked on. Also a scavenger hunt for the weekend. The next meeting will be held on April 14 before the regular club meeting. It will start at 6:30. Anyone is welcome to attend. Due to the size of our Booster Club, greetings are not sent for birthdays, but are noted in the newsletter. I would also like to ask all of our Booster Club members to help me recognize special/sad occasions of our Booster Club members by contacting me whenever such an event occurs, such as: • Wedding • Birth of a child • Illness or injury • Death of a member or of his/her immediate family member (i.e. father, mother, grandmother, grandfather, son, daughter, wife, husband, sister, brother, etc.). In his second year with the Penguins, he's glad he's in a small town, similar to his home. He completed just 1 semester at college and is a big Toronto baseball fan. He grew up learning to love hockey from his dad who is a big fan. He started skating around age 2. His comment about his first goal at home after 20 games: "nice". The April WBSPBC General Membership meeting is to be held at Holiday Inn on Monday, April 14th at 7:30pm. Belated Birthday Wishes We inadvertently missed two birthdays last month and at this time would like to wish belated birthday wishes to June Housenick, who celebrated on March 11 and Mary Rynkiewicz, who celebrated on the 23rd. 6 At the March meeting, booster club members brought in donations for the Catherine McAuley House. Based on my research for snow totals and road conditions that occurred, we made the right decision. Though we missed a fabulous game in Syracuse, we would have hit some of the worst weather traveling across I-90. It would have traveled with us until we passed Rochester. By the time we made it into Syracuse, assuming we did, the drivers would have reached their 10-hour a day limit, leaving us in Syracuse with no hotel. One missed game in 9 years isn’t a bad record, but I’m hoping the only snow we see the rest of the year is caused by skates. Our last regular season trip of the year is our annual kids trip. This time we travel to Hershey where they’ll be honoring Dennis Bonvie. Here’s hoping for snow-free travel and the chance to extend Dennis’ farewell tour well into the playoffs. Let’s hope the Pens can cap his tour with a win! Penguins in the ‘99 draft. He spent time in the ECHL with Wheeling and 4 years, 2001-2005, in the AHL with Wilkes-Barre Scranton. He was in his third season with Italy’s Osiago when ,on September 27, 2007, he collapsed on the ice and died before reaching the hospital. Known for his fun loving nature off the ice, the defenseman was one of the four Penguins featured in the “Chasing the Dream” documentary that followed several team members during the 2002-2003 season and Darcy was one of them. Darcy suffered from Dylexia and felt strongly to do something about it. With the passing of Robo, the Penguins have started a fund with the signing of the banner, which cost $5 per signature, with proceeds going to Robo Readers. The booster club has also payed tribute with running his picture in its mast on page 1 of the newsletter and renaming the 7th Man In annual award as the Darcy Robinson 7th Man In award. Let’s Go Pens! Darcy Robinson was a team favorite Darcy’s family was in town for the March 21 and 22 games when the Penguins paid respect to Robo. Prior to the March 21 game, his parents came to center ice to drop the ceremonial puck. Following that, the fans gave the memory of Robo a long standing ovation. March 1 to the 19th, the Penguins had been collecting fan signatures on a banner which now hangs at the arena with the words “ROBO” on it. With his family on the ice, the banner was revealed during this emotional period prior to the March 22 game. The fans, once again, gave a standing ovation.
