When two Chicago musicians, Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon), witness the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, they want to get out of town and get as far away as possible from the gangster responsible, Spats Colombo. They’re desperate to get a gig out of town but the only job they know of is in an all-girl band (lead by Marilyn Monroe) heading to Florida. So they show up at the train station as Josephine and Daphne, the replacement saxophone and bass players. Mayhem ensues as the two men try to keep their true identities hidden and Spats Colombo and his crew show up for a meeting with several other crime lords. All proceeds will be shared by Trinity Theatre and the Pantiles Rotary Charity fund that supports various local charities. Themed canapés and drink is included. Dress code: Gangsters and Gals. £20 including canapes and a drink Book Online: www.trinitytheatre.net THEATRE Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe A stage classic from The Globe on the big screen Thu 24 Jan 7.30pm Doctor Faustus, restless for knowledge, forsakes scholarship for magic and makes a pact with the Devil: if the tortured spirit Mephistopheles will serve him for 24 years, Faustus will yield his soul to the Devil after death. Transformed into an arena of wild spectacle and dark illusion, the Globe becomes the scene for an epic battle between Lucifer and the angels for one man’s soul. Larger than life puppets, huge flying dragons and horned stilt walkers bring Marlowe’s fantastical world to life Mephistopheles will be played by Arthur Darvill, best known for the role of Rory in Doctor Who. Doctor Faustus is played by Paul Hilton, who was last seen at the Globe in 1998 as Orlando in As You Like It and whose other credits include Rosmersholm (Almeida Theatre), The Daughter-in-Law (Young Vic) and Silk (BBC). Doctor Faustus is considered the greatest tragedy in English before Shakespeare. Marlowe places some of the greatest poetry ever written for the stage and a good deal of anarchic comedy at the service of this mythic tale illustrating mankind’s insatiable desire for knowledge and power. £10 (£8) Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare A stage classic from The Globe on the big screen Fri 1 Feb 7.30pm Claudio loves Hero and Hero Claudio and nothing seems capable of tearing them apart. Claudio’s friend Benedick loves Beatrice and Beatrice Benedick, but (because neither will admit it) nothing seems capable of bringing them together. Only the intrigues of a resentful prince force Benedick to prove his love for Beatrice – by killing his best friend. Driven along by a romance all the more charming for being unacknowledged, Much Ado About Nothing is a miracle of comic and dramatic suspense and gives us, in the bantering Beatrice and Benedick, two of Shakespeare’s wittiest, most lovable pair of lovers. A production of such flair and fidelity The Sunday Telegraph £10 (£8) The Mayor’s Command Performance In aid of the Mayor’s charity Hospice in the Weald Sat 2 Feb 7.30pm The first Mayor’s Command Performance, a Spectacular Variety Show, was held to great acclaim at the Assembly Hall in September 1992 and funds were raised for two local charities. In March 2003 a second Mayor’s Command Performance show, along the lines of the first ten years earlier, was again staged at the Assembly Hall Theatre. Now, some 20 years from the first one, a third Mayor’s Command Performance is being staged this time at the Trinity Theatre. Join the Mayor, Cllr John Smith, as he gathers together a fabulous mix of song, dance and comedy acts from around the borough of Tunbridge Wells. £20 (£10 under 18) Our Theatre season is sponsored by Tunbridge Wells 3 4 THEATRE Box Office: 01892 678 678 Farm Boy by Michael Morpurgo New Perspectives Theatre Fri 8 Feb 7pm It sometimes felt as though time had stood still on the family farm – swallows nesting in the eaves, the old Fordson Tractor quietly rusting in the back of the barn, Grandpa still tending his chickens – that is, until the summer his grandson finished school and came to stay, and the old man started telling stories of what it had been like on the farm when he was a boy. Michael Morpurgo’s compelling sequel to the award-winning War Horse is a moving account of the changing face of the English countryside and a beautifully-crafted reminder that stories really can reach out across the generations. Following critically-acclaimed runs at both the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the 2011 Brits Off Broadway Festival in New York, this magical tale of the bonds linking grandfather to grandson has once more been brought to life with drama, storytelling and original music. A heart-warming tale Sunday Telegraph £12 (£10) | £8 schools Funny Money by Ray Cooney An amateur production by Trinity Theatre Club Tue 26 Feb - Sat 2 Mar 8pm | 3pm matinee Wed & Sat It’s Henry Perkins’ birthday and this year he’s had a really special present - a million pounds in used banknotes in a briefcase he picked up in error on the tube train home from work. So what would you do? Well, Henry... let’s just say his wife takes to the bottle, pretends to be his sisterin-law and ends up with a nervous breakdown, his friends become his relatives from Australia, and he turns himself into his own brother and ends up with his best friend’s wife on the way to Barcelona. Caught up in the chaos are two policemen and a taxi driver whose lives are never going to be the same again. Endless comings and goings, brilliant one-liners and great visual gags – all the comedic ingredients expected from the Master of Farce, Ray Cooney. Premiered in London in 1994, a record run in Paris, translated into Russian and Japanese, a film version starring Chevy Chase and now it’s the turn of Tunbridge Wells audiences to be swept along in a night of hilarious mayhem. £12.50 (£11.50) Opening night special offer: £17.50 for 2 tickets eal Meal D THEATRE Book Online: www.trinitytheatre.net Sing Something Simple Dark Horse Theatre Fri 15 Mar 8pm “My name is Spencer Parkin and I can’t sing, can you?” Spencer’s Mum is a jazz singer. Ages 18+ My Gay Best Friend starts in a ladies’ loo in Eastbourne. Rachel is furious because her gay best friend Gavin hasn’t turned up to support her in her stage debut; he’s too busy in Hurstpierpoint trying to become a father with a lesbian couple and a turkey baster! After winning an Argus Angel when it premiered in the Brighton Festival, My Gay Best Friend is travelling the country in a pre-London tour. £10 A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare Sell a Door Theatre Company Sat 30 Mar 7.30pm Fairies, lovers, hapless actors, a disapproving father and of course oodles of theatrical magic! Hermia loves Lysander and Lysander adores Hermia. But Demetrius desires Hermia while Helena dotes on Demetrius. All of this gets spun on its head at the intervention of Oberon and his sprightly fairy, Puck. This production from nationally renowned Sell a Door is guaranteed to be dynamic - with music and madness revealing the darker side of this much loved comedy. Sell a Door Theatre Company have developed a reputation for high quality theatre following critically acclaimed tours of Spring Awakening and Lord of the Flies. They launch their 2013 season with a tour of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies - A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by Bryn Holding, the visionary director behind Sell a Door’s sell-out London productions of Twelfth Night and The Comedy of Errors. £14 (£12) Our Theatre season is sponsored by Tunbridge Wells 5 6 THEATRE Box Office: 01892 678 678 Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brönte Hull Truck Thu 21 Mar 8pm “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.” From a harsh childhood controlled by unfeeling adults, Jane Eyre has to rely on her own courage and convictions to make her way in the world. She longs to learn. She dares to dream. Employed as a governess, she travels across the bleak Yorkshire moors to the mysterious Thornfield Hall – a house of locked doors with a dangerous secret. There she meets the strange, sardonic and intriguing Mr Rochester. Can the constraints of society and the dark past be overcome? Should Jane trust her head or follow her heart? Hull Truck Theatre brings to life the classic story of love, loss and redemption in an intriguing new adaptation of one of the great gothic novels, directed by Nick Lane. A forceful piece of theatrical story telling The Stage on The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde £14 (£12) | £8 schools Wasted by Kate Tempest A Paines Plough, Birmingham REP and Roundhouse production in association with NSDF and Latitude Festival Fri 22 Mar 8pm I’m making a decision. I’m changing things. This is it. Three old friends. One remarkable day. For Ted, Danny and Charlotte, life will never be the same again. A day glo trip through the parks and raves and cafes of South London, where life is what you make it. The words of Kate Tempest paint a picture of lives less ordinary in an unforgiving world, sound-tracked by an exhilarating score. A play about life, love and losing your mind. Kate Tempest is the UK’s most exciting performance poet, currently serving up a storm in the UK hip-hop scene with her band Sound Of Rum. Wasted is her debut play and features her trademark lyrical ferocity in a dynamic theatrical staging. Ingenious... funny... spot-on The Guardian An unmissable experience Whatsonstage Seductive as smoke Time Out £14 (£12) eal Meal D THEATRE Book Online: www.trinitytheatre.net All’s Well That Ends Well by William Shakespeare A stage classic from The Globe on the big screen Thu 11 Apr 7.30pm A story of love and magic, Shakespeare defies all expectations in this comedy Helena loves the arrogant Bertram, and when she cures the King of France of his sickness, she claims Bertram as her reward. But her brand-new husband, flying from Helena to join the wars, attaches two obstructive conditions to their marriage – conditions he is sure will never be met. All’s Well That Ends Well grinds the romantic against the realistic at every turn and brilliantly reverses all the usual expectations of Shakespearean comedy. Some of Shakespeare’s most inventive language gives life to not just his single-minded heroine and her churlish lover, but a fantastic cast of frauds, cynics, sentimentalists and buffoons. Playing alongside the fabulous Janie Dee, Countess of Roussillon, are some familiar faces. Helena will be played by Ellie Piercy (Liberty and The Merry Wives of Windsor), while her Bertram is Sam Crane whose Hotspur in Henry IV last season won great acclaim. James Garnon (King James I in Anne Boleyn) will play the cowardly parasite, Parolles. £10 (£8) Handmade With Love @Trinity Appleducks presents Sat 13 Apr 10am-4pm Handmade with Love @ Trinity will follow on from the very successful event in November 2012 featuring beautiful handmade crafts designed and created by hand-picked talented local makers and artisans. The Count’s daughter and his valet cross social and sexual boundaries; and must face the consequences. While the servants’ party continues in the barn outside, aristocratic Miss Julie is drawn to the kitchen and to the socially ambitious Jean, her father’s valet. What starts as a harmless flirtation, soon descends into a ferocious power struggle and battle of the sexes, from which neither can escape. Banned in the UK for 50 years when first written, Miss Julie shocked critics across Europe with it’s frank portrayal of sexuality and inter-class relationships in 19th century society. Now widely regarded as Strindberg’s masterpiece, its vivid depiction of the class system is still as pertinent today, and has received worldwide critical acclaim. £14 (£12) | £8 schools Our Theatre season is sponsored by Tunbridge Wells 7 8 THEATRE Box Office: 01892 678 678 Our Town by Thornton Wilder Apollo Theatre Company Thu 25 Apr 7.30pm “Nice town, y’know what I mean? Nobody very remarkable ever come out of it, s’far as we know.” Set in the small town of Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire, Our Town is Thornton Wilder’s classic tale of American life in the early 20th Century. A story about ordinary citizens and their everyday lives, the play takes us through twelve years in the story of the town, and centres around two families and their experiences of life, love and loss. Following their hugely popular production of Blue Remembered Hills, Apollo Theatre Company return to Trinity with this exciting new production celebrating the classic play’s 75th anniversary. £14 (£12) | £8 schools Waiting for Brando by Mike Morris & Steve Higginson Sat 27 Apr 8pm Two Liverpool seamen. Director Elia Kazan (On The Waterfront) and playwright Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman, A View From A Bridge, The Crucible), confront their past in this story of brotherhood, betrayal, secrets and showdowns. Only one thing is certain - everything will change when Brando arrives. But their happiness is threatened when Rodolfo learns that Mimì is gravely ill. Giacomo Puccini’s romantic depiction of bohemian Paris, with memorable music and a love story drawn from everyday life, has captivated audiences round the world, making La Bohème one of the best-loved of all operas. It was first performed in Covent Garden in 1897 and has had over 500 performances there since. John Copley’s production recreates Paris in the 1830s, from the lively Latin Quarter, where hawkers and traders ply their wares, to a drafty attic where impoverished artists live. Rodolfo and Mimì’s love story is given moving expression through Puccini’s score, from their first meeting in Act I to their final, poignant scene together in Act IV. These moments of emotional intensity are contrasted with the colourful spectacle of the Café Momus and surrounding streets, which present a cross-section of Parisian society in all its noise and vibrancy. £15 (£13) In Italian with English subtitles Richard Durrant Fri 15 Feb 7.30pm The English guitarist Richard Durrant is a world class virtuoso with an imaginative flair for presentation and a warm and easy rapport that has endeared him to audiences in the UK, Europe and South America. His 2013 UK tour brings a new show packed full of stories and music from a lifetime of playing the guitar. Using the most intriguing musical stepping stones Durrant strides across continents and centuries like a possessed, guitar wielding Dr Who. The guitar is a chameleon - especially in these capable hands. Expect to hear JS Bach, Django Reinhardt, music from Venezuela and Paraguay, a special 10th anniversary tribute to Freddie Phillips with music from Trumpton, Camberwick Green & Chigley. Add to the mix Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells and you will see why Richard is the greatest guitarist of his generation. Extraordinary virtuosity… A simply unmissable treat Classic FM Magazine £14 (£12) Book Online: www.trinitytheatre.net Eugene Onegin Opera screened live from the Royal Opera House Wed 20 Feb 7.15pm When Tatyana is introduced to the dashing, unconventional Onegin, she believes that he is the hero of her dreams. But he carelessly rejects her – with tragic consequences. Tchaikovsky’s deep sympathy for his heroine Tatyana is shown in the tenderness of her music. Her yearning string motif opens the opera and it gains full expression in her letter aria in Act I – one of the most intense solo scenes ever written for the soprano voice. In Kasper Holten’s powerful new production, the turbulence of Tatyana and Onegin’s youth is contrasted with the self-realization they gain in later life. The staging foregrounds the power of memory and the often futile longing to undo past mistakes that comes with experience. £15 (£13) In Russian with English subtitles Tunbridge Wells Arts Festival GEMS Concert Sun 24 Mar 3pm Tunbridge Wells Arts Festival presents highlights from the 2013 Festival entries in an afternoon of Music and Drama at Trinity. The GEMS Concert features festival competitors invited by the Festival Chairman to perform, and showcases young local performing arts talent in a varied programme across all age categories. The Cups and Awards to Festival winners will be presented by the President of the Festival, His Worship the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells. £6 (£4) | £15 family Our Music & Dance season is sponsored by MUSIC & DANCE 11 12 MUSIC & DANCE Box Office: 01892 678 678 The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland Ballet screened live from the Royal Opera House Thu 28 Mar 7.15pm At a garden party on a sunny afternoon, Alice is surprised to see a mysterious white rabbit. When she follows it down a hole, things get curiouser and curiouser… Joby Talbot’s score combines sweeping melodies, which gesture to ballet scores of the 19th century, with contemporary effects. Bob Crowley’s wildly imaginative sets and costumes draw on puppetry, projections and masks to bring Wonderland to life. Alice encounters a cast of extraordinary characters down the rabbit hole: from the highly-strung Queen of Hearts, who performs a hilarious rendition of the famous Rose Adagio from The Sleeping Beauty; to dancing playing cards; a sinuous caterpillar and a tap-dancing Mad Hatter. There is a love narrative for Alice and the Knave of Hearts, and they dance a tender pas de deux at the close of Act II. But the ballet does not avoid the darker undercurrents of Lewis Carroll’s story – a nightmarish kitchen, an eerily disembodied Cheshire Cat and an unhinged tea party are all created in vivid detail. £15 (£13) The Rite of Spring Ballet screened live from the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre Sun 31 Mar 4pm Originally created by Igor Stravinsky and Vaslav Nijinsky for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets. Russes in 1913, The Rite of Spring is here entirely re-choreographed for its 100th anniversary, especially for the Bolshoi, by Wayne McGregor. The contemporary British choreographer revisits the themes of the Russian spring, The Adoration of the Earth and The Exalted Sacrifice, applying his characteristic energy and fluidity to this new creation. £15 (£13) Madama Butterfly Opera classic from Opera Australia on the big screen Fri 5 Apr 7.30pm One of the world’s favourite operas comes to the big screen in Opera Australia’s celebrated production of Puccini’s romantic love story. Fall in love with the beautiful costumes, colours and the quietly mythical spirituality of Moffatt Oxenbould’s classic production. Lieutenant Pinkerton has arrived in Nagasaki, where his ship will be stationed for an extended tour of duty. While he is there, he intends to live well. The local fixer, Goro, has rented a house with a view for him, and hired the staff. All that is missing is a little wife to come home to. Goro can provide. He knows a girl. Her name is Butterfly. Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of the world favourite operas, and is one of Opera Australia’s most celebrated productions with acclaimed Japanese soprano Hiromi Omura in the title role. She is joined by young Australian tenor James Egglestone, making his role debut as the dastardly Pinkerton, with Michael Lewis as Sharpless and Dominica Matthews as Suzuki. What will people pay for an air guitar on eBay? Can I have a glass of milk? These urgent questions and others are answered in The Price of Everything, a performance lecture about value. Daniel Bye’s whistlestop tour of bizarre facts and impassioned arguments is occasionally shambolic and often tendentious - but always a joy to watch. Comic, provocative, and possibly a tiny bit sad, this show is a must if you’ve ever wondered about the difference between the price of an object and its value. And you get a free glass of milk. The future of British theatre The Times £14 (£12) Politically Incorrect: The Songs of Tom Lehrer Thu 31 Jan 8pm Politically Incorrect is a 90 minute show of the best-loved songs of the master satirist Tom Lehrer. Written over 50 years ago, Lehrer’s songs and his irreverent attitude have survived the passage of time, though his satire is now perhaps darker and more politically incorrect than most of today’s wits would risk. Join pianist, vocalist and all round entertainer Peter Gill in a wonderful performance, reliving the golden days of cutting satire to hear such gems as Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, I Got it from Agnes, The Masochism Tango, The Irish Ballad, I Hold Your Hand in Mine, Pollution, Smut, When You Are Old and Grey and Oedipus Rex. £14 (£12) Francesca Martinez Sat 16 Feb 8pm What happens when you’re branded ‘abnormal’ in a world obsessed with normality? This show is Francesca’s defiant, insightful, and fascinating answer. Intrigued by the power that a six-letter word has over so many people, Francesca shares her own life-changing journey of growing up as ‘abnormal’, being rescued from High-SchoolHell by getting cast as a regular in ‘Grange Hill’, letting Ricky Gervais take the piss out of her walk in ‘Extras’, and working out what to say to the BBC after being offered the role of a, ahem, vegetable. Whatever body you’re born into, it seems that most people share the universal desire to be ‘normal’. This award-winning show is for anyone who’s ever struggled to fit in, felt ‘different’, or wondered what the @#&? ‘normal’ means? His act is legendary. He was the first stand-up comic to release a video which went on to sell 75,000 copies. Many of today’s successful comedians cite Jimmy as their inspiration and out of pure respect – they refer to him as the Guvnor! From the clubs in the South East, to the theatres around the UK and a residency in Las Vegas, Jimmy has played them all to sell-out crowds. However, (with the exception of ‘The Comedians’) TV stations would never air Jimmy, ruling his act as too risqué. In this his 51st year in show business, Jimmy has recently published his autobiography, packed with tales about his show biz buddies; and he continues to fill theatres with a great show including his memorable “true stories”. The Guvnor is back and he’s not taking any prisoners! £14 (£12) John Shuttleworth Fri 26 Apr 8pm It’s twenty years since former sweet factory security guard, and versatile singer/organist, John Shuttleworth took the comedy world by storm, and received a Perrier Nomination and an Edinburgh Critics Award for John Shuttleworth’s Guide To Stardom. The Sony and Perrier nominated Shuttleworth ventures beyond the garden gate to tread the mean streets of Britain. Which is better: city life or country living? Supermarket or village shop? Or is it better to sit in your shed and count the cobwebs? Star of Radio 4’s The Shuttleworths, TV’s 500 Bus Stops and It’s Nice Up North he has had numerous successful national tours since his debut, including 2000 & John which won the Manchester Evening News Comedy Award. John Shuttleworth is Graham Fellows’ best known comic creation after his chart success with Jilted John, which reached number 4 in the UK in 1978. Fellows continued his pop association when as Shuttleworth he supported Blur at the Mile End Stadium. His last series for Radio 4 – John Shuttleworth’s Open Mind was nominated for Best Radio Comedy at the North West Comedy Awards. £16 (£14 members advance only) Our Comedy season is sponsored by Ages 18+ 18 FILM Box Office: 01892 678 678 Skyfall Tue 8 Jan 2pm | 7.30pm 12A | 142mins | Sam Mendes 007 (Daniel Craig) becomes M’s (Judi Dench) only ally as MI6 comes under attack, and a mysterious new villain (Javier Bardem) emerges with a diabolical plan… With wit, colour and panache, Bond’s dazzling 50th anniversary adventure both embraces the past and looks forward to the future, thanks to a surprisingly emotional script, terrific performances and breathtakingly gorgeous cinematography. Showcasing a mixture of old footage, set models, personal recollections, stories and memorabilia from our patrons, volunteers and contributors, we hope to kick-start another successful year as the most special community arts centre in the heart of Tunbridge Wells. Town and Country Foundation Showcase Tue 8 Jan - Sat 2 Feb Pat Pope and Felicity Hasse Two Worlds…from Service to Civvy Street Town and Country Foundation are delighted to present ‘Two Worlds,’ the first in a trilogy of exhibitions. Through Pat Pope’s stunning photographic portraits, and the personal stories of ex Service Men and Women written by Felicity Hasse, the exhibition explores the real life challenges they face with housing, work, health and relationships as they journey from military to civilian life. Emma Troy Tue 5 - Sat 23 Feb The Heart’s Lesson Emma Troy explores the hazy areas of memory and longing using collage and printmaking to reinterpret familiar and iconographic images and ‘borrowed’ text. Re-imagined butterfly specimens, deer skulls, peacocks and trees are created from old magazines and newspapers and embellished with gold and silver leafed song lyrics. GALLERY 29 Book Online: www.trinitytheatre.net David Minton Tue 26 Feb - Sat 9 Mar Cradling of Loss In David Minton’s drawings and paintings flowers die, birds fall to earth, the work arrives; the making of the images is a cradling of loss. These works are small instances of tension created from the impossibility of description, the incompleteness of experience, the wish for resolution. In the making, the physicality of paint, the elegance of line, offer tactile comfort. Martin Garwood Tue 12 - Sat 23 Mar A Cold Snap Martin Garwood’s photographs are an exploration of frosty mornings, of cold and rain, ice and snow. Of mist, fog, and the different moods and colours of winter landscapes. His exhibition is a celebration of the elusiveness of light and of those tenebrous days when winter feels like it might be with us forever. Town and Country Foundation Showcase Tue 26 Mar - Sat 13 Apr Contemporary Craft The future of Contemporary making is here! Town and Country Foundation showcase the work of nine young emerging makers as they come together for the first time. They will be showcasing an eclectic range of contemporary crafts both handmade and unique. This wonderful and curious exhibition explores an engaging variety of disciplines and materials. Sophie Abbott Tue 16 Apr - Sat 4 May Green Blanket, Pink Shed Sophie Abbott’s inspiration for this show comes from many places: the seaside, a market stall, a beautifully shot film, local allotments or the landscape on a road trip in her van. It’s not what it is in a practical sense, but the composition, shape and colour that excites her. It’s about finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, and capturing that in a painting.
