Dear TNTers, Now that the winter is settling in, we can all look back
Dear TNTers, Now that the winter is settling in, we can all look back at the times we had this summer through these journal pages and reflect on those times we had. These journals reflect a small part of what the experience was about, written from your perspectives. Through them, it will remind you of and experience which you never had before and an opportunity which not all have a chance to partake in. Completing the TNT program brings with it a certain sense of accomplishment that can only accompany spending time in the woods with 11 other strangers who then become something of a family. You forged friendships, scraped knees and fingers together, and marveled at the work that a small group of dedicated people can do when working in harmony. Although not all times out there were perfect, I get the feeling that, in the end, lives were changed as well as the landscape where you found yourselves each week. Thank you for continuing the legacy of TNT and keeping the legacy of NYC alive in the forests we call the Pacific Northwest. The next generation of TNTers will have the shoulders of giants to stand on – yours. All the best, Adam Taylor TNT Program Manager TNT 1-2011 CREWLEADER: Tim Smith CREW COLOR: Red WEEK # 1 PROJECT NAME: New Rivers Invasives Work NATIONAL FOREST: Coos Bay BLM RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: This weekend we found out who was in our crew on Sunday. I wish Sat. though! The car ride to our campsite was 2-3 hours long. Although everyone got energy drinks and candy, so that made the 2nd half of the car ride to camp go by quickly. When we got to camp, we set up camp and did chores. For dinner we had left over mac ‘N cheese and spaghetti. ☺ Henry DeFrisco TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? This week we are at Coos Bay. We are pulling weeds and piling wood because we are clearing out invasive species. Today we got to use some tools and throw wood into piles. We also drank water and ate a whole box of goldfish. Faith WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: This week our goals for the week were to pull invasive species of grass, lop invasive pines, swamped the pines and moved the grass to the forest. We pulled the grass and moved it to the forest on Monday, but after that we just swamped. Our main goal was to make the dunes look nice and to clear as much trees as possible. By the end of the week we had around 40 slash piles throughout the dunes along with the 4 large grass piles. Ellis Springe THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: The crew learned how to use some of the tools like Pulaskis, loppers and grubbers. We learned how to swamp piles of slash and we learned to stay calm in bad situations because a corps member went to the hospital. FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week Our crew was challenged with one of our members going into Anaphylactic shock twice in one day. After we lost Jasmeen, we were down to 7 males and 2 females. Some of our accomplishments were how we swamped a lot of trees in the given week. The week was pretty hectic but we all made it through. Kaelon McKinley CREWLEADER: Tim Smith CREW COLOR: RED WEEK # 2 PROJECT NAME: Dean Creek Maintenance NATIONAL FOREST: Dean Creek RANGER DISTRICT: Coos Bay BLM MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: Some kids played ultimate Frisbee. We are finishing Blue Crew’s work. We are also doing work on the shrubs and bushes at the elk viewing area. To get to our first project site we had to walk an hour one way. So far we have made a check dam and cleaned up a messup with the dirt from recently dug water trenches. I’m sure there’s much more to come in our projects. Henry WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: Our goal is to make the Dean Creek Elk Reserve look nice. We will be rehabilitating a salmon habitat. Michael Kuhns CREWLEADER: Tim Smith CREW COLOR: RED WEEK # 3 PROJECT NAME: Chemult RD Slash Removal NATIONAL FOREST: Winema National Forest RANGER DISTRICT: Chemult Ranger District MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: It was parents’ weekend so our parents came and we made dinner. It was enchilada pie. I had a lot of fun. Kael got pizza stix and friend breakfast food. We then drove to our camp-site. We had a store stop and Michael bought me a Mt. Dew. ☺ HD TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? This week we are at Chemult Ranger District swamping and building beaver dams in a mosquito infested area. We are swamping to restore a meadow. At this point in time, I have no idea why we are building beaver dams, but I suspect it is for a good reason. Faith WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: Our crew’s goal for the week is to swamp trees and to build beaver dams. The week is going slow because of mosquitoes. I hate mosquitoes. Ford Dunn THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: We learned how to work well with Oregon South 2, Red Crew (gotta love ‘em!) I’m very bitten up by mosquitoes (the whole crew is.) We are all excited for Friday. FRIDAY, FRIDAY, GOTTA GET DOWN ON FRIDAY!!! Yay! Friday! Kaelon S Mckinley FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week This week my crew had many challenges and accomplishments. I’d say our biggest challenges were the mosquitoes attacking us. Our the group’s morale got really low and we weren’t all getting along very well. I’d say our accomplishments were we made our contact super happy with how fast we (and the other Red Crew) got the swamping and slash piles done and that in a day we built a beaver dam, and lodge. Personally the beaver lodge was what made me feel most accomplished, because everyone was carrying big logs and cutting down little bushy trees. Anna crawled inside to tell us where we missed and I gave an idea that really helped Andrew out. Me (and pretty much everyone else) can’t wait for showers to wash off all the bug spray and dirt tomorrow and also getting to Shady Dell. Faith K CREWLEADER: Tim Smith CREW COLOR: RED WEEK # 4 PROJECT NAME: Cascade Siskiyou Trails Work NATIONAL FOREST: Siskiyou RANGER DISTRICT: Medford BLM MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: Our crew went to Shady Dell this weekend and had Crew Olympics. It was really fun. We got second place. We also went on rec trips. I went to a waterfall. It was really cool. All in all, this weekend was awesome. Ford Dunn TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? We are putting up snow-mobile markers in Siskiyou National Monument. We are also going to work on the Pacific Crest Trail to do tread work. For the week, we are staying at a horse camp next to the lake with no mosquitoes! I am really excited for the end of the week! (Here comes graduation!) Anna Nguyen WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: Our goals for the week are to make our hours and work on the PCT hopefully, and earn showers on Thursday. We also want to get most of camp taken down Thursday night so we can sleep outside and leave early on Friday morning to go to Big Clean. P. S. Graduation, Baby!!! Vince Benson THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: Our crew learned this week how to put signs on the trees for snow mobile trails. We’ve also been sawing limbs and to spot and get angles for the signs perfect. P.S. 3 more days!!! Kaelon S. McKinley FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week This week we had to learn new things with trails like how to put blazes up and how to make a corridor while imagining about 6 ft of snow on the ground, which that was our challenges. Our accomplishments were that we made our contact really happy with the 6.5 miles of work we did. Ford CREWLEADER: Alana CREW COLOR: ORANGE WEEK # 1 PROJECT NAME: Day Creek Campground NATIONAL FOREST: Eugene BLM RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: On Saturday we all arrived at NYC Headquarters around 10 and sat through an enthralling presentation about how great NYC is. Afterward we arranged ourselves into alphabetical order without a sound. Then we separated into groups and went to different stations on safety. (Stations such as tent set-up, tent safety, food, cooking.) From there it was dinner time. Dinner was composed of potatoes and mac & cheese and Sloppy Joes. Then we did a Saturday circle. Finally it was time for bed. Michael Simmons Matt Kirk TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? Our crew is in the Clay Creek Campground doing maintenance on a trail and the campground. We are doing this because the trail is in poor condition and needs to be worked on; aesthetic-wise and functionally wise. Our crew is meshing well together and everyone is working hard. We are to build two cribs on the side of the trail. Garrett Cantor-Cox WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: Our goals for the week are to be safe, not have any injuries, finish our projects and get all of our hours done. Our crew is meshing and bonding really well. All of us are working hard and some of us even got to paint! A solitary BLM guy came by and talked to our crew leader, Alana. Our crew is learning how to strip trees of bark using Pulaskis and bark-strippers. We are using the stripped logs to build a crib because the land is unstable and some false tread is there. I hope we can finish it all! Stratton and Michael Simmons THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: Our crew learned a ton this week! Besides the two returners, we all had to learn how to use each tools and the proper tool storage. We learned the importance of clearing duff off the trail and how to reconstruct a better drainage dip. We learned the importance of working as a team, especially when we communicated while trying to move heavy logs up the trail. We even had to learn the specific rules and traditions around camp. Holly Bossart FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week Today we woke up at 5:30 am so that we would have enough time to finish up our work around the campground, pack up and leave. Our largest project this week was building a retaining wall on a part of the trail that was too uneven. We also put posts in around the campground, which was difficult because they had to be perfectly spaced. A few members of our crew hiked the entire trail and cleared off debris that was on the trail. Also we received the 10th kid that was to be a part of Orange Crew. The biggest challenge of the week was the first day of work because there was a lot of work to be done. Some of our accomplishments this week included putting in over 6 posts, painting a bridge and the posts, building two crib walls, clearing and brushing an entire mile and a half trail. Our crew really had a fantastic chance to bond and work together. Some of our challenges were getting up in the morning, SEEDs and cooking a delicious dinner. Harry Dillman CREWLEADER: Alana CREW COLOR: ORANGE WEEK # 2 PROJECT NAME: Destroying Scotch broom NATIONAL FOREST: Bastendorff Park RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: Our crew stayed at Cape Blanco. We went on recreational trips that consisted of going to Humbug Mountain, Bandon, Naval Coast Guard Museum in Port Orford and some other place. It was fun going to the beach and hiking up a mountain and then going to a store. We also slept under a log on the beach. I was very rested after. Forrest Piatt TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? We are in Bastendorff Beach near Coos Bay. We get to clear out Scotch broom! Yay! Scotch broom is an invasive species that will take over an area. It grows really fast and is from a different area. Holly Bossart WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: Our crew’s goals: • To clear the entire parking lot space • To try to clear Scotch broom • To do a professional job & please the contact. • To work efficiently • To work safely • To complete all of our hours • To encourage each other & work as a team • To maintain being the fabulous Orange Crew! Malory Lund THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: Our second week we learned many things. We learned how much we all hate Scotch broom. We learned that putting your face too close to the stove while lighting it will, in fact, result in singed eyebrows. We learned how to use weed wrenches too. Not only did we learn this, but we grew in the belief that Orange Crew is the best (but of course, we knew this already.) Holly Bossart FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week: Our crew’s challenges for the week were how monotonous the work was and when it rained, trying to keep our spirits up. One of our crew members wanted to quit, but he managed to stay. Some of our accomplishments included finishing the parking lot by clearing out all of the Scotch broom. Another one of our accomplishments was when Harry and I beat 4 other crew-members in a game of ultimate Frisbee 5 to 0. Harry and I are getting very good at ultimate, probably best in NYC. Another one of our challenges was waking up really early and trying to be really tolerant of each other so early. We also helped people feel good about themselves by letting them sing songs for us. Overall we had a great week and hope to have another one. Orange Crew got it done! Garrett Cantor-Cox CREWLEADER: Alana CREW COLOR: ORANGE WEEK # 3 PROJECT NAME: New River Invasives NATIONAL FOREST: RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: Our crew got to see our parents and got rec trips and store stops. It was really fun and awesome to see our parents. We also go an incredible dinner from all the food that our parents had brought. We are getting roads for work. Garrett Cantor-Cox TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? We are working at the New River. We are removing invasive species and blackberries. It’s very boring because you are just doing the same thing all day. The blackberries hurt too because they are pokey. We had to drive 35 minutes to get to our worksite from our campsite. We got pretty tired because we were all working really hard and it was sunny all day. Stratton Matteson WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: One of Orange Crew’s goals are to beat Yellow and Red Crews slash piles. Another goal is to impress Kip, who is our contact. Also we are going to weed the project hours; if not, do more. We don’t want to have any injuries. We want to do a good job and work super hard. Forrest Piatt THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: Our crew learned many things this week, such as learning how to make slash piles, dig up deep poles in the sand, however I think that the most important thing we learned is to always work hard even when there isn’t someone there watching. We also learned better communication skills. Rosie taught us about the salmon cycle and Alana taught us about how everything has a purpose in the ecosystem. Forrest Piatt FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week Orange Crew had to face many obstacles this week. At the start of the week the stoic battle began with the invincible blackberry. Blood was shed and patience was tested on that fateful day. Somehow Orange Crew, in all of its glory, pushed through the lush forests of blackberry and decimated the wild beast down to the very root. After the blackberry was put in its rightful place, Orange Crew began its battles on the sandy dunes of Sixes, Oregon. Building gnarly slash-piles out of a mess of branches was an exhausting task, but Orange Crew stepped up. The roar of the chainsaw ran through the dunes, motivation us through a long day. All in all, it was a tough and exhausting week for Orange Crew, but even through the sand in our eyes and the sweat that was lost, Orange Crew managed to work through it as a team. Holly Bossart CREWLEADER: Alana CREW COLOR: ORANGE WEEK # 4 PROJECT NAME: Sandy Ridge Trail NATIONAL FOREST: Salem BLM RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: This past weekend was the Crew Olympics and Orange Crew completely owned it! It was amazing how supportive everyone was toward one another. Corey did a great job with the plank & Orange Crew placed second. We won the Pulaski hold with Forrest & his Supermanlike strength. Orange Crew got 3rd with the relay race as well as the 2-gallon chug and we won the trivia game. We also won the tug-o-war game against Red Crew. Orange Crew really pulled together to win the Crew Olympics with style! (Cuz we’re Orange Crew & we get stuff done! ☺) Malory Lund ☺ TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? This week we are building a sweet mountain bike trail from scratch. The project is the best we have had all session. I really enjoy building a trail from scratch and is especially fun because it is a mountain bike trail The worksite is off the Bar Cowhill Road, close to Brightwood, Oregon. Our worksite is on the Little Sandy River. We are only 25 miles from Mt. Hood, so it’s really cool. Stratton Matteson WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: We want to get a certain check point by the end of the week. So far we are doing good. We want to beat the other Orange Crew in Ultimate Frisbee. We also want to get out of our campground really early and we want to get to HQ first. Another goal we have is to finish the session off with a BANG!!! THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: Our crew increased our knowledge by bonding with the older crew. They taught us a little bit of the wild-side of Orange Crew’s heart. We also built some trail from scratch and that taught us persistence & patience. We learned how to still deal with one another & love as a family still today. This week, like any other, we are learning an experience & time spent with many memories. Raena Grace FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week During this week our crew has had many challenges such as building retaining walls, make the trails the way Shane wanted us to and just getting enough trail done every day, however being Orange Crew, we accomplished everything Shane asked us to, but accomplishing these tasks was not easy. For example building took a really long time because Shane only wanted rocks that barely two people could carry, plus we then had to haul dirt a long ways. Building the trail was especially hard because Shane had a certain way it needed to be done. Getting the right amount of trail done was also hard because of Shane’s strict ruling. Forrest Piatt MY MOST CHALLENGING DAY AT NYC WAS: During 3rd week, the work wasn’t hard, but I was just really tired of it and really tired in general. I missed my family a lot & I had just wanted to go home. Malory Lund My most challenging day was Wednesday of 2nd week because the work we were doing was monotonous and I was only halfway through the work week. Harry Dillman …When I carried a bunch of logs. Garrett My most challenging day was the second day of working first week. It was hot and we had to dig more holes in the sun. Holly Bossart …When we had to work four hours getting rid of Scotch broom. Stratton The last day because we were trying to get everything done in two hours. …The last day. Forrest …Wednesday of the last week. Raena When we were building trails and it was hard because it had stumps in the way and I had to cut them out. Forrest How to work with different types of people How to build some awesome trail How to recognize the good qualities in people, even when they are not necessarily being kind to me. Malory Lund • • • • How to build trail • Which species of plants were invasive • Time management Henry Dillman …To work hard… Stratton • How to work hard • Building a community • Respect Forrest Piatt I learned so many things at NYC. I learned to take responsibility for my actions, to work hard and treat others the way I want. …To be free & open… Raena …How to build multiple types of retaining walls… ONE THING I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER: …Is how to be a great leader; also how to build awesome trails Matt Kirk I will always remember that working as a team is infinitely more effective than working by yourself. Harry Dillman I have respect for wilderness and animals. Stratton I will always remember all of the faces of Orange Crew and how we kicked butt! I will always remember the memories made in the past 4 weeks. Orange Crew Garrett Cantor-Cox Orange Crew Forrest The work we did & the impact that Orange Crew & the people in it had in my life. Holly Bossart I will always be respectful. …Analyze the situation. …Be more persistent & honest. Raena CREWLEADER: Jaz Ammon CREW COLOR: BLUE WEEK # 1 PROJECT NAME: Dean Creek Maintenance NATIONAL FOREST: RANGER DISTRICT: Coos Bay BLM MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: On Saturday we got to NYC camp and met everyone, then we went through safety precautions and learned how to set up our tents every week. Also as the day went on, we went to bed and then it started to rain. On Sunday we packed all of our tents, food and other needed things into the trailer. Then we got on the bus and traveled to our new campsite for the rest of the week. Branden Kohfeld TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? We are at the Dean Creek Elk Reserve on the Umpqua River and what I did today was dredging out a creek and fixing culverts and fixing draining ditches. We/I did this because the water needs somewhere to go and because the trenches were getting full of a lot of dirt and such. Makyah Brown WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: At the beginning of this week our crew made goals. Those goals were that we were going to work hard and respect each other all week. We also agreed that we would all communicate and be helpful to each other. If one of us forgot a goal, we would remind them and they would correct themselves. So far, everyone has abided/done all of these goals. Amber Whitfield THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: This week we’ve learned something new every day. Monday we learned how to set up camp and get the kitchen ready. Tuesday our crew went to clear loose dirt out of culverts and ditches that another crew had dug out. Yesterday I learned how NOT to make pizza/lasagna, and we all got a ton of great work done. Today we’ve learned how to clear Scotch broom and how to tie several different knots. Currently everyone is working hard to learn every single tool and communication is much easier. Emily Dencer FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week Working at Dean Creek Elk Reserve presented some unique challenges that Blue Crew had to work together to overcome. The first of these challenges was when we had no filter for the sump. Tristan had the bright idea of using reeds as a filter. Another example of Blue Crew’s (and Jaz’s) ingenuity is when Bob, the person managing our work, told us about how when it flooded the water rushed through and wore the bank down. We decided to build dams to combat these problems. In my opinion our proudest accomplishments involved coming together with our fellow crew-mates and getting Shania to stay. That was a proud moment for all of us. Anthony Jones CREWLEADER: Jaz CREW COLOR: BLUE WEEK # 2 PROJECT NAME: Transmission Lines Invasives NATIONAL FOREST: Eugene City RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: This weekend Blue Crew kicked back and relaxed after a hard week of work at Dean Creek Elk Reserve. We split up and went on our recreational trips. I went with Jess. He’s really funny; not as much as Jaz though. The only time I saw my crew-mates is when we were in the tents and when we were assigned the chore of preparing shotgun. Anthony Jones TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? This week we are working in a parking lot pulling weeds out . It has been very hot for 2 days now and we are trying to keep native plants in the beds so the surrounding plants can’t kill off the native plants. It has been very boring, but an easy task for us to do. Branden Kohfeld WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: My crew’s goals for the week are getting all the work done that was given to us, which was to completely remove all the bad weeds from the EWEB parking lot and our personal goals for our crew are to get along and resolve the problems that we are having. Shania Martinez THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: This day we learned to keep track of stuff as we moved to a new, nettle-infested camp. We also learned the importance of word-games in the eternal fight against the boredom of weeding the parking lot. We also learned about how to prepare for bear country, how to handle Pulaskis; then the importance of rest. Shania FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week: Our first challenge was to weed the whole parking lot, which we did in 2 ½ days. Then we had to pack and unpack 2 times, until we got to our supposed spot on Thursday. Another challenge is getting my water bottle off of this vile tree and it is still up there! I hate that tree. I would drink a whole sump line for it back. Now we have to weed a whole field, but the whole crew knows we won’t finish because 4 fire fighters haven’t made a dent in the weed field and they have been working in it for 6 months! We also had to use butter knives for weeding and ripped open bags to move the weeds. BYE NOW. I WILL NOW GO BEAT UP A TREE! Tristan Bryant CREWLEADER: Jaz Ammon CREW COLOR: BLUE WEEK # 3 PROJECT NAME: Sandy Creek Trail System NATIONAL FOREST: RANGER DISTRICT: Salem BLM MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: Friday we got to the weekend site. Saturday, after an awesome relaxing rec trip, most of the crew saw their parents. We all had a buffet with the parents. That was the best dinner so far. On Sunday we drove 4 hours to our campsite for the week. We had a boring job last week, but we are all excited for our trail work job this week. Preston Scheidt TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? This week Blue Crew is doing trail work for the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA). We are working in the Sandy Creek Trail System outside of Sandy, OR. The trails we work on are biking trails so there are many specific rules for making and maintaining them. We will be putting in retaining walls, digging out large obstacles in the path and making trails smoother. We are doing this so that the bikers here can enjoy these trails safely and happily. Nathan Levi WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: This week our crew’s goal is doing a high quality job on trail work. To do this, we need to work together and get along. We have had many struggles communicating and getting along for the past two weeks, but I think that if we try really hard, we can do it. We also need to focus and make Jess, Jaz and our contact really happy. We also need to try and not put each other down if someone does something stupid and wrong. It has happened before and hopefully we can achieve our goals for the week. Amber Whitfield THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: This week we learned about trail work and things that need to be done, such as retaining walls, drainage and water blocks. We also have learned about the water system. It’s been a fun job so far, compared to the last one and I believe that Blue Crew has learned a lot together. My favorite SEED was a SEED on rock types. Jess led us on a walk where we saw the different types. It was fun. Anthony Jones FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week My crew’s challenges for this week were to get up early every day cause we had to drive about an hour to our worksite; and we also been doing trail work for bicycle riders. We had some big challenges, like pulling out big roots and building retaining walls and drainage. Our accomplishments for this week: we successfully built 2 retaining walls and about 5 drainages and finished our part of the trail. Shania Martinez CREWLEADER: Jaz Ammon CREW COLOR: BLUE WEEK # 4 PROJECT NAME: North Spit Trail Maintenance NATIONAL FOREST: Coos Bay BLM RANGER DISTRICT: Coos Bay MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: This weekend Blue Crew all went their separate ways on the recreation trips, but we all worked together during the Crew Olympics, even though we lost. Amber and Shania went swimming in the stream but they got in trouble for throwing a rock at Tim. It was really funny. Anthony Jones TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? We are camping in about the same area, to the right. It’s hot sand full of gorse, little tiny plants that get everywhere. Our hike to our worksite was less dramatic than we make it out to be. There was no dramatic high speed race against the tide. We spend most of our time brushing back branches. It is quite buggy. Sean Valente WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: Our goals this week have been to get the project over with. Everyone has been working hard. The 2-mile walk to work is hard and we want to have enough energy to carry all the yellow-tops, so eat well and stay hydrated. Emily Dencer THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: This week our crew learned a lot, such as sawing limbs from the base and not the middle; plus we learned that working together as a crew gets things done faster and more efficient. I believe that our crew learned a lot this week hiking 2 miles to work Amber Whitfield FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week My crew’s challenges were walking a mile and a half to work and walk back and not be on the clock, but just knowing that we did that challenge made it here made it more rememorable and also there were lots of mosquitoes and in the hot sand dunes. We also lost a tent joint and there was nothing to put it up with duct tape and never had a chance to get our joint back, but we made it work with all of us helping each other. Branden Kohfeld MY MOST CHALLENGING DAY AT NYC WAS: NYC is a rewarding, if arduous, journey. I would say that the day we were stuck in the monotony of endless weeding… Just when we had felt we had accomplished something by weeding the huge parking lot, flower beds; it was crushed in an avalanche of hopelessness as we viewed the giant field we were working in. A team of fire-fighters had worked in it during their off season and hadn’t made a dent in the gigantic field. Their off-season had been going on for a 6 months. As we worked, people began to zone out. The hours dragged on into endlessness. Our backs hurt from bending like Sippy-birds to pull up weeds, as the day dragged on; we became bone tired with our task. We changed on the day with endless games of G.H.O.S.T. We gave up on progress, BORED TO DEATH!!! After the eternity of weeding we pulled back into camp. We had to pack up, so we had no time to whine. Sean Valente The most challenging day was when we went to the beach on Wednesday (our 3rd day) because it was very hard walking a mile ½ in beach sand and back holding water jugs. Makyah Brown My most challenging day here was probably during third week. My temper was on a short fuse while we were doing real trail work. Emily Dencer My most challenging day was likely today! I think that I did not take my ADHD pill and today is Big Clean, so I think I will have to step it up really well today. Tristan Bryant My most challenging day at NYC was in the second week when we were weeding all day and the day stretches on forever! Nathan Levi My most challenging day at NYC was Monday on fourth week. Why? We had to hike for about 2 miles to our site. It was very hard and tiring. Amber Whitfield The most challenging day for me at NYC was Monday, week 4. It was very hot and we had to walk for miles carrying tools and yellow-tops. Anthony Jones My most challenging day at NYC was all of the days of week four. We had to hike for 1.5 miles in to work and out. Branden Kohfeld My most challenging day was on Wednesday of the fourth week, cause we walked a lot. Shania Martinez MY THREE FAVORITE NYC EXPERIENCES WERE: My first favorite NYC experience is rocking the dock and scaring Emily, our beach fire on Monday, tramping through the beach muck finding mermaids hair, finding crabs and beach bugs and finally hiding dead rock crabs in cute places; so basically free time on the beach. My second favorite NYC experience is probably having been told I am responsible by Jess! Yay! Also that I have been working hard on the trail. The last few weeks I feel proud when I see what I have done on the job. Oh great. Amber just found my hidden crab and knocked it off a log with a crunch. It was there for a reason!!! So my third favorite NYC experience is meeting new people like Sean, Emily, Nathan, Branden and Anthony. NYC really helped me for my social skills that I will use in life, as has work skills! Tristan Bryant My favorite NYC moments/experiences would be the 1st day at the worksite (the first week, meeting my crew members. I really liked learning the names of different tools, and using them. I also like traveling to different places in Oregon. Makyah Brown My favorite experiences were: • Pulling up a huge stump with Nathan & Anthony • Chilling during free time • Meeting my crew. Sean Valente My favorite experiences: - Making pancakes! - Campfire on the beach - Real trail work. ☺ Emily Dencer 3 favorite experiences—3rd week was super fun building bike trails. Another from 3rd; getting giant root ball out and finally meeting and bonding with all my new friends… Nathan Levi My three favorite experiences was first week staying on the elk reserve; second week we stayed next to a stream/creek and swam every day and third week building trails. Amber Whitfield My 3 favorite experiences were meeting new people; week 3 working at the BMX trails & the fires of week 4. Anthony Jones My favorite experience at NYC was the BMX trail work. It was easy but hard at the same time; also having to eat sandwiches every day but last. My last favorite experience is bonding with my crew. Branden Kohfeld My three favorite experiences were being with my crew. Shania Martinez AT NYC I LEARNED: Here at NYC I’ve learned a lot. My crew has shown many great changes over the course of these four weeks. The very first thing I learned about was tool safety. It is extremely important to me that we all handle our tools properly and use them how they were meant to be used. Messing around with tools can ruin any perfect day because it hurts others’ safety as well as your own. The second thing I learned was I can make excellent pancakes. My favorites were the triple chocolate (chocolate brownie mix, chocolate chips, chocolate sauce). The third and most important thing I learned was I have many values and challenges that face those values. Here at NYC I was able to use these values as a hard worker and a good friend. I hope to learn more in the few days left and become an even better worker by using my values at home as well as here! Emily Dencer MY SPEECH FOR GRADUATION! FAVORITES: CONS: Pancakes Mosquitoes Sean’s Grand Adventure Missing NYC The Elk Preserve My crewteamwork Bug spray/anti-itch Getting up earlier than everyone else... Makyah Brown …to love TP. I also learned that I have tension. Sean I learned how to tie knots, how to work hard and that I am not dependent on my pill to focus after all! Tristan Bryant At NYC I learned that when you mush random strangers together, they can become very close friends. Nathan Levi Here at NYC I learned that teamwork is very important. Without it a crew would be nothing. Amber Whitfield I learned to always be kind to people. Anthony Jones I learned not to get in fights and have fun. Branden Kohfeld I learned not to judge people too quickly and to open up more. Makyah Brown I learned to be more kind. Shania Martinez ONE THING I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER: One this I will always remember here at NYC is teamwork/friendship. When you are on the worksite you need to have good teamwork. Why? Because if you don’t work together, then work will go by a lot slower and you won’t be able to get done with your job as fast. Here at NYC, working together is what work is all about. When you work together, you build trust and friendship. That’s another thing I will always remember here at NYC. Friendship. Having friends make jobs, chores and school so much better. Friends are there to talk to when you are feeling down or just at any time for that matter. Friendship is also a good thing here at NYC. Why? Because if you have a friend on your crew, from when you wake up to when you are in your tent for tent time, a friend will be there to make your day go by so much faster. It is always the best and furriest times that happen when you have friends. Honestly. Everyone needs a friend. When I came here, I thought I wouldn’t make any friends, but I did, and because I met Makyah Brown, camp has gone by so fast and it was so fun and amazing. I will try my hardest to come here again and make even more friends. So there you have it. Those are the things and skills that I will remember here at NYC. Amber Whitfield I will always remember getting and E.P. (Notice of Exemplary Performance) Sean V I’ll always remember Blue Crew and all the hard teamwork and effort we put into everything. Emily Dencer I will always remember all of the good friends I made at NYC. Tristan Bryant I will always remember my first full time job. Nathan Levi I will always remember all my good friends. Anthony Jones I will always remember to have fun with people I met. Branden Kohfeld I will always remember my crew! Makyah Brown I will always remember Makyah. Shania Martinez FROM NOW ON I WILL ALWAYS: From now on I will always appreciate the little things in my daily life. These are many small things I enjoy every day that I was not permitted or was not provided. I missed my music a lot because music is a big part of my life, however I learned I didn’t need it as much as I thought I did. Another daily convenience I missed was a toilet. Throughout the four weeks, we did not have flushing toilets, but I have learned that they are not a necessity. One more appliance I will appreciate more after NYC is my dishwasher. I am used to lightly scrubbing my plate and putting it in my dishwasher and leaving it, knowing it will be clean, but here we must hand wash everything, which is something many of us are not used to; but I discovered it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. So after my experiences here at Northwest Youth Corps, I will always appreciate the small conveniences in my life that I use every day. Nathan Levi From now on I will keep “nature wipes” in my back pocket. SV From now on I will always have more faith in myself. Tristan Bryant From now on I will always be as confident and self-assured as I am here at NYC. Emily Dencer From now on I will always respect nature to the fullest. Amber Whitfield From now on I will have a strong work ethic. Anthony Jones. I will always work hard with people. Branden Kohfeld From now on I will always try new things. ☺ Makyah Brown I will always respect nature. Shania Martinez CREWLEADER: Tessa CREW COLOR: YELLOW WEEK # 1 PROJECT NAME: New River Invasives Work NATIONAL FOREST: Coos Bay BLM RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: What my crew did this weekend was the crew had an orientation where we learned about what NYC was all about. At first we went through stations where we learned about different things, like bumping, and how to check the hitch for the trailer and if was secure or not. Then in one station, we learned how to put up the NYC tents. Then we had a Big Fun, which was called, “Birdy on the Perch.” Birdy on the Perch was lots of fun to play. It kind of helped you trust each other. Sunday was the day we chose our crew color. Yellow Crew is at the coast where we set up camp and learned about chores. We did our first journal and some goals in our SEED booklets. S.E.E.D. stands for “Something Educational Every Day.” Then we made dinner and set up tents and our kitchen. Then we went to bed. TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? Our crew is camping at Edson Creek. We are working at New River. We’re getting rid of invasive species on the dunes. We pulled grass, made burn-piles and cut down invasive trees. We’re getting rid of the invasive species to allow the natural vegetation to preserve the environment. WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: Our goal is to clear out the area in which we are working in; make sure we don’t have hospital visits, make sure we all complete this session, make our parents proud of their children, take a shower, save the dunes, make sure we are all there to encourage and help each other out, be careful with tools around the environment and crew members. Mitchell Johnson THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: So far this week we have learned a multitude of things. One of the most conspicuously crucial lessons that we have learned is the effect that what you do in the present can have on the future. If we work hard one day, then we may not have to work as hard the next day. The converse of that is also true. The second lesson that our crew has learned is the importance of solidarity. By being close to each other and getting along as much as possible, it’s much easier to get our work and chores finished quickly and efficiently. Robert Hartzell FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week DUNES. We want to save the Everybody had to persevere, even if it sucked because everybody is/are sore; however we cleared a lot of grass. Yeah, how about those dunes! I love dunes. I surf dunes with my scooter. It’s exactly an alligator. My favorite composer is Einstein. We use heat-seeking Napalmshooting guns to save the dunes. Kali CREWLEADER: Tessa CREW COLOR: YELLOW WEEK # 2 PROJECT NAME: Whittaker Creek Campground Maintenance NATIONAL FOREST: RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: This weekend we went to Cape Blanco at the beach. While we were there most of the Yellow Crew went and took a shower! After that, we went to the beach for a while. Then we got bored and went to Port Orford for a store stop. We proceeded to a park and played at the playground. Then we went back to camp early and had to wait outside. Blake TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? We are doing trail maintenance & it’s absolutely amazing. It’s shady & lush & green. I love loppers, especially when they are sharp! The road is amazing too. Well, it’s currently raining & it sounds beautiful. I hope it thunders! Kali Harp WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: Crew Goals: Shower.. Make a trail. I don’t know what to say but it’s my first day and so far, so good. Thank you Yellow Crew. Caleb Lindsay THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: We learned how to dig drain ditches! We also learned how to tread and brush trails; and I think everybody also learned how to use their rain gear. Blake Dawson FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week: This week we built stairs and a trail. The dookie was a challenge to eat and to keep down. Dookie is a little like liquid brownies. It was Rosie, the rover’s fault, because she didn’t tell us how to make it. We had to work in the rain, which was annoying, but not challenging. We also have to lug our tools halfway up a mountain in the mud. That’s a challenge! It’s also a challenge not to cry tears of joy when I think of showers and clean clothes. We also lost 2 members of our crew, so we have had to work 2 eight hour days this week. It’s also challenging to write this journal page, but it’s better than other chores. It has literally taken the course of 5 hours to finish this entry. Peter Behrens CREWLEADER: Tessa Allen CREW COLOR: YELLOW WEEK # 3 PROJECT NAME: Bastendorf Invasives Work NATIONAL FOREST: Coos Bay RANGER DISTRICT: Coos Bay BLM MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: This weekend our crew did pretty much the same thing that we did last weekend. We journeyed to our weekend site, got reacquainted with the other crews, ate dinner and slept. On Saturday we went on rec trips. The only difference between this weekend and the previous weekend was that parent’s visited the campsite on Saturday night. The rest is not worth reciting. Robert H. TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? This week the Yellow Crew traveled a treacherous 3 hours to Coos Bay to take on the challenge of slaying Scotch broom. It is an evil and difficult invasive species and needs to be terminated. The Scotch broom’s difficult to pull out of the ground. It almost seems impossible to remove, but Yellow Crew once again outshines all the other crews and dominates. Yellow Crew over every-thaaang. Kyler McKinley WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: The crew has done extremely well. I think that when we get to the weekend site, we will have a lot to brag about. Our goals are to clear out all the Scotch broom plants and eradicate them in this area. I believe all of our goals are a little more self-driven than driven by others. This week we will make the site look like it went to a girls’ salon and got a whole new look. We are all doing very well with all of the jobs that we are being tackled with. We will endeavor on every one of our nights. Mitchell Johnson THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: This week we have learned that Scotch broom is the Devil, but I have loved being in Yellow Crew! Caleb Lindsay FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week This week our crew had many challenges from the deep dark Scotch broom roots to the bright shining sun that burnt us for 2 days and then disappeared. That sunlight was replaced by a thick, evil and consuming fog. It dampened everything in its path, making trees drip, but after Kyler scared it away the first time, the sun returned on its second try earlier today. Another challenge the men had to face was a tent that smelled like sweaty, unwashed, bodies. After we persevered through those challenges, we pulled Scotch broom, put on sunscreen or warm jackets and slept outside!!! Blake CREWLEADER: Tessa CREW COLOR: YELLOW WEEK # 4 PROJECT NAME: Chemult RD Slash Removal NATIONAL FOREST: Winema Nat’l Forest RANGER DISTRICT: MONDAY: Describe what your crew did this weekend: This weekend our crew went to Shady Dell for the weekend site gathering. The four crews got back together to share stories from week 3 and make more good memories together. We parted off to go on our rec trips, which were all really fun. Then we participated in the Crew Olympics. Yellow Crew didn’t win. We ended up getting 3rd. The end. Kyler McKinley TUESDAY: Describe your project this week; where are you, what are you doing, why? We are in Muskeg Mosquito-land. We are massacring mosquitoes and dumping them in mass graves that are stuck to our table with 98.11% DEET bug spray. Some mosquitoes twitch for up to 5 minutes before they die. The lucky ones have a quick and painless death. Robert likes to torture them. Unfortunately we have to wait until the sub-zero degrees night temperatures kill them before we go to the latrine. Peter Behrens WEDNESDAY: Describe your crew’s goals for the week: This week on NYC Yellow Crew, the crew is determined to never pile slash ever again. EVER!!! As the week nears the weekend, Yellow Crew transforms into beavers. Our goal is to build our dam/dams in 3 days. Hecka yeah!! Kali Harp THURSDAY: Describe what your crew learned this week: This week we absolutely dominate! We have built a sweet trail for the ATVs to ride on. Then we started on the beaver dam today and have finished it. Now we are just finishing up the rest of the ATV trail. The crew is doing great. We are working hard each day, so we can finish early on Friday. We are dominating over all crews because we get down early a lot. If we finish our 2nd assignment in this week, we will work on another. We beat all other crews. Mitchell Johnson FRIDAY: Describe your crew’s challenges and accomplishments this week The crew’s challenges this week were the seeders. The crew’s accomplishments were finishing the dam. Now that we are done, I am looking forward to seeing my family and I’m sure everybody else in my crew is too. The time here has been fun. Thank you, Tessa! Oh, and Rosie!!! Caleb Lindsay MY MOST CHALLENGING DAY AT NYC WAS: My most challenging day at NYC TNT was Thursday on week 4 I got eaten alive by insects.
