Faithfully I Serve Him Lake Township FISH September / October 2015 Editor: Jan Moore-Dwenger Volume 2, Issue 5 Faithfully I Serve Him Food Pantry Needs: Canned Chicken Cleaning Supplies Soup Pasta Sauce Boxed Potatoes Facial Tissue Grocery Coupons Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! August was a month of actually detailing the worth of donations to the FISH Pantry by weighing and recording the weights of all the groceries that came through the doors of the FISH pantry. This activity was then translated into how many meals this food would provide for the clients. Other statistics were also revealed from the cash donations that were made as to how much could be purchased at the Akron Canton Food Bank and at local stores through sales and use of coupons. Throughout this newsletter, we hope you will see the importance of your donations and how the good stewardship of your monetary and grocery donations is being employed. Generous people of our community donated in many ways in the months of July and August and we are grateful for all of them. Just look at the list to see the incredible involvement that helps those in need. In 2014, we averaged paying $0.12 a pound for groceries. (Much of the food we receive is free, such as all the produce.) The conversion of pounds of food per meal is 1.2 lbs. per meal. Therefore, the amount of meals we can provide from this food is 17,088 meals! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ While that might seem like it would last a long time, in the first three weeks of August, 2015 alone, FISH distributed enough food for 17,904 meals. This was an increase of 4,533 meals above that given in August, 2014. All the numbers have significantly been higher with the number of new clients and the number of clients’ visits. The organization buys tons of groceries from the ACFB, it does not rely solely on these purchases. This organization gets many donations from brown bag drives and must supplement these two sources with purchases made by a volunteer shopper who diligently uses coupons and watches for sales. The largest expense FISH has is for groceries, but monetary donations also are used to pay for other costs besides food. FISH provides thousands of dollars every year for financial help to people in Lake Township who are facing desperate situations such as eviction or utility shut-off. There are also expenses for operating the Lake Township FISH pantry. Recap of Recent Events FISH’S 2nd Annual Pie Contest on Saturday July 11th proved to be a tasty affair. Judges, Hartville Mayor Richard Currie, members of the Hartville Fire Department, and Kami Sommers had the enjoyable but difficult task of picking the winners among the 17 pie-bakers. Congratulations to these winners: 1st Prize - Glennis Lautzenheiser for Walnut Pie, 2nd Prize - Fern Dews for Vegan Apple Crumb Crust Pie and 3rd Prize - Sue Rife for Cherry Pie. After the judging, the pies were cut into slices and sold. Thanks to all who baked and/or bought the pies and to Edward Jones for sponsoring this event. Scott Tucker, Manager of Romeo’s Pizza, held its 3rd fundraiser for FISH this year on July 28th. As on the other two dates, Scott gave a percentage of the proceeds from the food those supporting FISH purchased. We appreciate this ongoing support from Scott and those who buy the food. On August 29th, Macy’s Department Store held a “Shop For A Cause” sale. Each customer For the first time in its 42-year history, could buy a pass for $5 which Lake Township FISH held a Garage and was used that day as a coupon Treasure Sale. That one is what this tale is about. A group of children from a local day care, Kids’ Country, came to visit the FISH pantry one day in July to bring money the children had earned by having a lemonade stand to help the hungry. One youngster, as he dejectedly handed the money over to FISH Director, Kathleen Schenck, remarked, “Thirty four dollars and fifty cents Food Bank. She went on and explained that the money they had earned had just purchased all the meat at the Food Bank that was in one freezer for isn’t very much!” Kathleen said, “Oh yes it is! I can buy a $31.20 and there even was lot of food for that amount of some left over to buy other groceries. Joe and the others money.” She pointed to the freezer in the room and told Joe learned an important lesson to go over and look in it, then that day. All donations are look in the other two freezers in needed and help make a differthe room. Each one was filled ence to those who need help in our community to the brim with 150 lbs. of meat she had purchased for FISH from the Akron Canton DON”T FORGET THAT……….
