COMMODORES MESSAGE
Greetings fellow Geary sailors. Another fantastic summer is behind us. This year’s International regatta was held at
Lake Arrowhead, California and we all had a great time thanks to Jack Bechtold and his wonderfully supportive
wife Tina. The entire Lake Arrowhead yacht club deserves a very big thank you from all of us for hosting this
event. The sponsorship that was attained was very welcoming and impressive. We were kept very busy both on and
off the water. There was so much to see and do at this beautiful mile high lake that it's safe to say we could have all
used a little more time. I would like to thank Michael and Diane Burch and Shelly and Mark Scott for opening their
beautiful lake front homes up to us and hosting a couple of the evening events. Old friendships were renewed and
new friendships were made. Both evenings were greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all who attended. I must say I
really enjoyed the water taxi service provided by Bob Griffitts, Dana Taschner, and Jack Bechtold. Touring the
waterfront of Lake Arrowhead is very interesting and enjoyable. The weather for the week was very warm, the wind
was challenging and the race committee run by Ed Purcell did a fantastic job. I would like to make special mention
of the Randle family who traveled from Oregon with four boats. This family is not only showing its strength in
numbers but also on the race course. On the last day of sailing the races were delayed due to a passing thunder
storm. The thunder storm also scared away most of the motorboats and we had unusually smooth water to sail on in
comparison to what we had become used to over the course of the week. I believe Debbie Eckrote made a place in
history for herself this year by being the first ever Fred Harley boat to win the tune up race. (If I'm wrong I hope
one of the elders lets me know.) Next year I hope everyone is planning on attending the 2013 Geary 18
Internationals at Cultus Lake B.C. The date is set for July 15-19, 2013. We finished off our sailing season in
Coos Bay Oregon at the Coos Bay Yacht Club Labor Day Regatta. This year’s regatta started off with something
new on the Friday night before racing started. There was a Hawaiian Luau at the point complete with a large pig on
the barbecue and a ukulele band performing. The evening’s festivities were followed by a very beautiful and fitting
sunset. The Randle Family did a great job spearheading this additional event and CC O’Bryan had the rest of the
weekend’s events running very smoothly. Tom Mills and his very efficient race committee had us off and racing
early Saturday afternoon as soon as the wind started. The winds were typical for this lake, shifty and challenging
but still fun. The Sunday night barbecued oysters and salmon dinner was as good as always. Uncle Tom made his
rounds with his Tequila and gave anyone who wanted a taste. As always this is a very warm and welcoming club.
Thank you to everyone involved. We will all look forward to next year.
Michael Rodde

GEARY 18 INTERNATIONALS
GENERAL MEETING
Lake Arrowhead, CA
AUGUST 9, 2012
Commodore Mike Rodde called the meeting to order at 0935
Chris Knudson, Sec/Treas. Read the Roll Call of Fleets. Membership total is 27, which is down four from last year.
Treasurers Report was read by Deb Eckrote. The totals for the bank accounts and the District Funds were read as
well as total income and expenses. The report is available to anyone who would like to read it.
There were no minutes taken at the 2011 Internationals.
REPORTS OF OFFICERS
Commodore – Mike Rodde wanted to thank Jack and Tina Bechtold and Sharon Griffitts for putting the
Internationals together this year. Also thanks to the Race Committee, the safety boats and especially all the
sponsors who helped support this year’s races. Reported that District I has a new member – Rick Tull, Cultus Lake
who is the owner of Jamaica Miss. He also raced at the Memorial Day regatta at the end of May. Next year’s
Internationals will be held at Cultus Lake on July 15-19. Mike also reported that he has picked up one more boat
for restoration; Whippet III.
Vice Commodore – Darin O’Bryan – Not present
Rear Commodore – Tim Mills – Not present
Secretary/Treasurer – Chris Knudson had a lot of family commitments this last year and has sold #874 Spindrift.
Chief Measurer – Tom Mills - Not present
Executive Secretary – Deb Eckrote reported that she had several email inquiries this year from folks wanting to buy
boats, and a few wanting to sell. Currently we have Harald Rodde from Cultus Lake with #1490 Aloha IV for sale,
and just heard from Scott Swanson in Orange, CA wanting to sell #1488 Lucky Swan.
Welcome to our new members Rick Tull from Cultus Lake, with newly restored #209 Jamaica Miss, Dana Taschner
from Corona del Mar, CA who owns #1441 Whippet IV, and Matt Rustigian from Long Beach, CA who owns #1439
Explitive. We still need an editor for the Tell Tale. I have put out a couple of editions and would be happy to
continue to help out if anyone is interested in taking over. Stephanie is still putting it onto the web page. I have
some ideas for future editions. Please let me know if you are interested. Couple of winter projects – I will be
scanning all of the measurement certificates that the association has on file. Some date back to the 1930’s and are
very fragile. Some are glued into the black books. Bud and Joan brought their library of Tell Tales with them and
those too need to be scanned and saved.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Jack Bechtold asked about the status of the molds. Sean Randle reported that the molds have small blisters and if a
new boat is wanted, they will need some work. Maybe 5 more boats is all we will get out of them. Cost to make
one is unknown.
Mike reported that he purchased a new mast/boom from Seldon which is close to the old “F” series which is out of
production. Cost for the mast about $1,080, and the boom $350. Will try and get information on the web page for
Seldon. Mike can also help with rudders.
NEW BUSINESS
The 2013 Internationals will be held at CULTUS LAKE, near Abbotsford, Canada on July 15-19, 2013.

The championships were just too close to home to pass up this year…a short 2-hour
drive up to Lake Arrowhead was all it took. So with my 3-year-old granddaughter
(Tammie’s daughter) packed safely in the RV we were off. I found a campground with
electric so we were set for the warm nights that were to come, part of the unusual heat
wave Southern California experienced that week.
We arrived at the yacht club on Tuesday about 1030, which would be our pattern
the next 2 days. For those of you who have never been to the Lake Arrowhead club it is
somewhat like the club at Coos Bay. Single story building, a nice deck with a great view of
the lake and we are able to see some of the marks from the shore. It also has a little beach
(Coos Bay’s is much larger) which is a fun place to cool off and pass the time when there are
no races going on.
I’m sure others will report the particulars of the races so I’ll stick to my story of
Bailey and mine’s days on the deck.
We had such a good time…it’s hard to know how a 3 year old will react in an
environment they’re not used to but Bailey took to the club and folks like the ‘Peeples’’
family heritage would dictate.
The Arrowhead crew could not have been more welcoming and hospitable. They
were attentive and made sure all were informed and comfortable. Bailey and I headed out
one day with Sharron and Tina on the chase boat, and after a short while all Bailey would
say was ‘go faster’ and ‘Grandma look at the white water’ (from the prop). Their kindness,
Baileys joy at the adventure, will always bring a smile to my face.
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings were spent at the homes of two of Arrowheads
families. This was a wonderful setting and encouraged all to sit and visit, to catch up and
check in about all the time that had gone by since we’d seen each other. There were several
kids that come down with the ‘up north groups’ and I must thank them for the time they
spent with the little ones down our way. I remember my kids running around several clubs
and internationals, and could even imagine my mom and dad visiting with friends while my
sister and I made memories with far off friends seen only once a year.
The last day was spent at the club with a dinner and trophy presentation. When Bailey and
I left the host home the night before out of the blue she said to me ‘Grandma, I didn’t say
good bye to everyone’. I must admit the hair on the back of my neck stood up. The Los
Angeles Flattie fleet of my youth (50’s and 60’s) was very social and had members that
were so very special and unique. One of those ladies, Holly Stratford, was much more than
just a sailing acquaintance. Her love of all was expressed in many ways; one of those was
her affection to all when the day was done. Many times her husband would hope to
encourage her to speed up her good byes, but that would fall on deaf ears…prompting him
to actually head home without her a few times. When Bailey said she didn’t say good bye to
all I just knew that was Holly and all others up above sending down their joy in all of us
being together. So it was that the last night, Thursday, Bailey said good-bye to all she could;
we were the last ones to drive out of the parking lot. I’d like to thank Mike and Jack for
working together to put on such a wonderful championship and to all those who worked
behind the scene.
Message from Bud Busch
Well, the 2012 International Regatta is over and Joan and I would like to take this
opportunity to say how much we enjoyed seeing all of our Geary 18 friends. Lake
Arrowhead was as beautiful as ever
( except for the sixth race on Thursday when the
start of the race had to be delayed for two hours because of lightning and thunder). By the
time the race started however, the clouds had cleared and the race was on. All of the
Arrowhead members that we met were very cordial and seemed pleased that the Geary
Internationals were there. Robin, the yacht club Manager, and her staff were outstanding
and made every effort to see that things were going smoothly. It was obvious that Jack
Bechtold, the regatta chairman, and his wife Tina had spent a lot of time organizing the
week which was filled with social events. They had help of course from the other Geary
members one being Sharon Griffitts who not only helped around the club but drove one of
the chase boats. Monday night was a barbeque dinner at the club, Tuesday night a fine
dinner at Michael and Diane Burch’s house, Wednesday night another fine dinner at Shelly
and Mark Scott’s house and then Thursday was a great breakfast at the club and the
Thursday night bring your own meat Trophy Presentation Dinner.
As far as the races went, I thought the Race committee did a great job. I couldn’t see much
of the races from the yacht club but I did have a course chart and I could see the start and I
know from experience that running races on a lake like Arrowhead can be very difficult. I
did go out on the Race Committee boat for the sixth race and I know that when we were
ready to set the start line, the wind came from three different directions in about a five
minute period. They did have nice warm weather for the races, although some I’m sure
were calling it hot, it still was a very enjoyable regatta.
Michael Rodde sailed a great regatta and finished first with Scott Randle second, Sean
Randle third and Chris Knudson forth. In the Harley Series, Rhys Randle finished first,
Debra Eckrote finished second and Diane Burch finished third.
Now for the down side. I was really shocked to see that Tim Mills had not returned the
International Trophy to the Association so that it could be presented to the new
International Champion at the Trophy presentation dinner. The Trophy is a perpetual
trophy and the winner is only allowed to keep the trophy for the year with the
understanding that he or she is responsible for returning it to the Association so that it can
be presented to the new champion. Although Michael had won the trophy before, he sailed
a heck of a series and certainly deserved to have it presented to him this time and the
Arrowhead Yacht Club deserved the right to be able to present it to him and the audience
deserved to see it. In fact, I would have liked to see my name on it again.
I have known and respected you Tim and the Mills family for many years and I have to say
that I am very disappointed about the disrespect that you have shown for the Association
and its International Trophy.
